Clearly The Antibiotic Has Given Me A Virus

About three days ago I started to cough. And really, “cough” doesn’t do it justice. It’s been more like a barking wretch. Last night I woke up in such a fit of manic coughing that I wondered if I was going to throw up, and then that just seemed silly, because who would do such a thing when all they have is “drainage”?

So to the doctor, yes. Excellent idea.

It should be no surprise at this point, as it is par for the BooMama course, that the doctor diagnosed me with a sinus infection. That would be sinus infection #962, if you’re keeping score at home, and you should be if you’re not, because they’re exceptional, my sinuses, capable of storing and replicating all manner of bacteria-laden particles. What can I say? It’s a gift.

Two prescriptions later, I headed home, with Alex in the backseat repeating, “Mama! You got a BAAAAD cough!” six or fifty-two times. Observant young lad, isn’t he?

Now typically I try not to take antibiotics if I can possibly help it, because I don’t like how they make me feel and because I’m always scared some mutant bacterial strain will wreak havoc on the world and I’ll be immune to the one drug that cures it. But in this case, well, it seems to me that my options are either 1) antibiotics, 2) pneumonia, or 3) finally coughing up those pesky lungs, at which point I’m guessing that the whole sinus infection thing would seem pretty inconsequential. Antibiotics it is.

So I have taken my medicine like a good little girl – and I took it with food, just like the instructions said – but I am so nauseated – soooo nauseated – that I involuntarily make this low, rumbling, and quite lengthy gurgling noise about once every five minutes, like I’m an elderly, hoarse tomcat trying to get out just one more “meow” before I finally kick it for the ninth time.

And on that note, I bid you a fond, albeit raspy, goodnight.

  1. oh my gosh. i had a sinus infection once. just once, yes. the migraine causing, slow death type. sinus infections are straight from hell and you have my sincerest sympathy and prayers.

  2. Bless your heart, boomama, you have my deepest sympathies. I have chronic sinus infections, too. They want to do surgery, but they won’t guarantee that I’ll be any better off, so I’m digging in my heels till I have no other options.

I hate the stuff, but Vick’s Vaporub helps me some, if you can stand it. Not the most romantic cologne, but you’re not likely thinking along those lines at this point in time, anyway.

Where you seem to be now is where I long for aloneness…..simply to be left alone, to suffer and die in peace. :) It’s better for everyone else for me to be left alone, too. ;)

Hope your antibiotics kick in and you’re well soon. I’ll be praying for you, and I will start as soon as I have this published. Keep us posted.

  3. I am sooooo relieved. I don’t like to take antibiotics either. I thought I was alone with my fear of a “mutant” virus! They also make me terribly sick to my stomach too. Hope you feel better soon and gurgling stomach is under control.

  4. I have decided that I am a complete and total baby when it comes to medicine. I actually felt fine when I went to the doctor…I just sounded like I had a case of advanced emphysema. Now I feel worse because of the medicine…and I think something about this whole process is very, very wrong.

All that being said, things here are still mighty fine indeed.

  5. As you know, I am right there with you. I am currenty also taking antibiotics for a sinus infection (#1,398). I am telling you, I think that we could sue MSU; I am fairly certain that living in Hathorn Hall damaged my sinuses for LIFE!

Thankfully, antibiotics don’t usually affect me adversely.

  6. Bubba, I second that emotion. I dont like to do the antibiotic thing, either.
I popped an “Airborne” in a glass of water this morning to get rid of any evil spirits that might be lurking around my body. :)

  7. I Love me some Airborne!

  8. I really need to remember the Airborne stuff. Unfortunately, I don’t think it could do much for this congestion that is quite literally rattling in my chest. It’s like background music, only gross.

  9. Soph, there is hope for you! I, too, was plagued with sinus infections, but, for some reason, they are not as frequent as they once were (I tried eating yogurt every day, and it, or something, helped). Last year, though, I had one and I was on antibiotics and steroids, which make me WEIRD, WEIRD, WEIRD, (or WEIRDER, WEIRDER, WEIRDER) and I planned for my son’s 7th birthday party to last for 5 hours here at my house! You can imagine waht kind of crazy idea that was! Anyway, I feel for you, and I hope they will get less frequent as we age (maybe a good thing about aging?)

  10. Liz! You’re back! Yay!

Steroids make me weirder, weirder, weirder, too – I opted to not get a shot this time, because if I had, I would’ve turned my house upside down yesterday and cleaned out every closet while simultaneously cooking six recipes at once, and then today I would’ve been face-down on the floor.
