For several weeks I’ve been looking forward to A Very Special Oprah featuring the beautiful Ms. Faith Hill and her handsome husband, Mr. Tim McGraw. Now I’m not normally one to put celebrities on a pedestal – I very much subscribe to the philosophy that celebrities, just like the rest of us, put on their pants one leg at a time and eat things that don’t agree with them and stuggle with real problems (on top of eluding the paparazzi and battling your various and sundry addictions).
But Faith and Tim – well, they’re special. They’re like homefolk who made it big – and even though they’re gorgeous and famous and all that stuff, you know deep down that they still eat cornbread and pound cake and the occasional piece of fried chicken. Faith probably eats baked chicken – she’s not big as a minute – but Tim, well, you just know that he loves him a good chicken leg every now and again. With some hot sauce on the side. And a biscuit.
Now we’re all aware that Coretta Scott-King died last week. I don’t know anyone – at least not anyone I could ever be friends with – who would argue that Mrs. and Dr. King lived anything other than heroic lives. They instigated great changes in our country in general and our South in particular, and I know we’re all grateful for that. It’s a debt we’ll never be able to repay, and I want to be very clear that I appreciate and admire what the Kings did with their lives and their calling.
So here is the thing, the evidence of the fact that I am not, as Mama would say, “deep as a thimble.” There was a televised memorial service for Mrs. King on Monday. There was a televised funeral for Mrs. King yesterday. A THREE HOUR FUNERAL that PRE-EMPTED the Faith and Tim Oprah. I’m not saying that Mrs. King didn’t deserve a three-hour funeral. Not at all. I’m just saying that maybe they could’ve scheduled it from 10-1 or even 1-4 but why oh Lord why from 2-5 when it cuts right through the heart of the Very Special Oprah that I’ve been anticipating for weeks?
Today I went to the TiVo, filled with hope that our local ABC station had decided to run yesterday’s Oprah episode today, hoping that I’d click “Play” and see Faith’s pretty Tammy-Wynette-ish-but-it-works-for-her hair. Instead, it was Matthew McConaughey, who is nice-looking and all but nowhere near, not by the longest shot, the same level as Country Music’s Superstar Duo.
Did one of y’all happen to tape Oprah yesterday? Please?

I saw it, Soph. It was as good as I thought it would be (sorry to tell you). They just make you want to gag because they’re so happy together (not that I wish them unhappiness — it’s just that they’re the “perfect” couple). I, too, love them, and I don’t love many celbrities. Another Mississippian who made our state proud yesterday was Brittany Spears driving down the highway in California with her INFANT in the front seat in her lap. How proud I was that we are from the same state!
Yes, I saw it, too, and can’t stop thinking about it. I bet you can see it somehow with all the TV contraptions you have. Anyway, it was excellent. They sang two duets together and it showed them at their “country” house outside of Nashville, at the grocery store and then at home making cornbread and chicken and dumplings. I agree with Liz that they really do seem happy together. I was telling S. today that Oprah is VERY taken with them. I could tell when she had Faith on in Oct. (for the first time) that she would have her back again SOON. There’s just something about that girl. I’m proud of her, too. And dang, she’s so pretty it’s sickening.
OKAY GIRLS, YOU ARE NOT MAKING THIS ANY EASIER FOR ME. :-)
It showed them making chicken and dumplings? Together? And I missed it?
I’m depressed. And it doesn’t seem to be coming on again. Maybe it’ll rerun this summer.
Sigh.
Okay, here’s one to burst your bubble…but not in a hateful way.:)
No, of course I didn’t see it…but nonetheless, Faith’s Tammy-Wynette-ish-hair-does-not-work-for-her. She doesn’t need all those rotten hair extensions. However, that’s just MY opinion…and please don’t quote me on that. :)
I know. I used to think it looked best short, but I’m really beginning to dig the long, brown hair. I don’t think those are extensions. When it showed them in the grocery store, she had on no makeup, glasses, jeans & tennis shoes, and her hair was very natural looking, not really fixed. It really looked like it was just her hair, and I think it has some natural wave to it. But what do I know? All I have to say is if those ARE extensions…then gimme some!!

I think, the more I ponder it, that perhaps Sister’s comment is coded, because she has to be somewhat careful about what she says on this topic due to the – ahem – nature of her work. So I will get the real deal scoop on the phone and relay it to you promptly. :-)
See, I didn’t like it at first, either, but it has definitely grown on me, pardon the pun.
I will go on the record, however, as saying that Faith’s hair has never ever looked better than it did in the “Let Me Let Go” video in 1999. After I saw the video – and D will vouch for this – I promptly called my fabulous stylist, made an appt., and insisted that he replicate the ‘do. So I prefer her hair short – but I also dig the retro look.
But we should all face the reality that she’d look good bald.
I’m with Sister, and I have no connection with my work (unless of course you think Faith may have written that sign in the bathroom of the local high school). I like her hair better blond and not quite so long. Gosh, seeing Faith at the grocery store in old faded Levis, she just looked perfect! She has the best figure!
I even saw this in Pennsylvania! I am so proud of our hometown girl. (She looked so pretty and so REAL while shopping at Wild Oats-that’s kind of funny…shopping for groceries to make chicken and dumplins at Wild Oats…they must not have a Pigley Wigley in N’ville) Oprah should take notes from her and support the people of the MISSISSIPPI Gulf Coast, like Faith has done, instead of Louisana. What ties does Oprah have to LA? We all know that Oprah does not say to many nice things about her homestate and that is a shame, her home folks need her. I still love her, but she is down on my list.

She has the best figure ever. And I’m sure in person she weighs about 4 lbs., but on television she looks perfect. D and I went to see them in concert about five years ago, and when she walked on the stage, I looked over at D., and his mouth was literally hanging open. His jaw dropped away from his mouth when he saw her…and so did mine, a little bit. :-) Completely unrelated, but did you know that Wilco is going to be in Meridian at the Temple?
Soph, did I KNOW that Wilco is coming to Meridian? Do you remember that I live with the man who is obsessed with them? He called the Temple yesterday and just happened to talk to P’s father. He just wanted to see if the tickets were selling well. We, of course, have had our tickets since they became available to the fan club members. Oh, we’re so cool!
Well, I assumed that y’all knew, given T’s obsession – and he was the very first person I thought of when I saw the story in the Meridian Star. I’m a little scared that if y’all get to go backstage again, T may not survive the excitement. Can his heart take it? :-)
I don’t think we’ll be invited backstage because I’m sure P’s dad will tell him about the phone call and he will start to fear for his safety with the obsessed fan that T is…
There is something very funny to me about a 35 year-old man being so obsessed with a band that he calls one of the band members’ father to check on ticket sales. Doesn’t that make you love him even more?
