Works For Me Wednesday

Last night Alex was starting to wind down a little. He grabbed a basket full of books, hopped up on the couch, and began to thumb through some of his favorites. And as he was “reading,” he started to sing to himself:

“See the world / sail the seas / climb the mountains if you please / God put it there / So you could see / The wonder of His love!”
Seriously? One of my sweetest mama moments yet.

And where did he learn this song? At church?

Nope. In the car.

Now I know that it gets OLD listening to kids’ songs. Sometimes I have to take a one-day break from Veggie Tales because I feel like I can’t take the song-stylings of a high-pitched cucumber for one more minute. But it dawned on me last night that it really is so worth it – because Alex is absorbing truths about God. That’s always a good thing. Plus, the songs keep him occupied during a trip…he is perfectly content to sit in the back, and look through books, and sing to his heart’s content.

And I keep a “Mama back-up” on hand, too – a mixed CD with fun arrangements of old hymns. He loves Selah’s version of “Deep, Way Down Deep,” for example – and you must believe me when I tell you that the “Mama back-up” has saved my sanity on more than one occasion.

So a young’un learning about Jesus (from vegetables, no less) during what could be wasted time in the car – it works for me.

  1. Since my daughter Leslie thinks dogs get saved, maybe I could put Elway in the car and play him some veggie tales? We assume he’s already got his eternity squared away but doesnt hurt to get a little scripture in ’em…come to think of it, maybe I can just listen to it – wouldnt hurt me either.

  2. I think that’s an EXCELLENT idea. Maybe you could howl along with the lyrics – and then Elway could share them with the other puppies in the neighborhood. :-)

  3. Great idea! Our little one isn’t to the age yet where he’s listening to kids praise songs (he’s 9 months), but it definitely seems worth it. What a precious moment you had in your house last night!

  4. I totally agree with you. And when they get a little older, (I do this with even my 4 year old) you can let them listen to praise songs or whatever “kid” worship they want in their CD walkman. THAT saves my sanity. I can’t say that I am good about sitting back and listening to kid stuff all the time. My kids love to sing, so we do listen to it quite often, but not ALL the time. High five for you!

  5. So sweet that he’s learning that way. My kids love to do the same. Great tip!

  6. We love the veggies! My little guy’s favorite is “I thank God for this day…”
It beats “Old McDonald” hands down.

  7. That is so sweet! I love me some Veggie Tales. My kids had tons of tapes to listen to in the car, (scripture songs are a great way to learn Bible verses) and they would sing along with my CD’s as well.

If only you could see the picture in my head of Bev and Elway wearing sunglasses and rockin’ out to some groovy veggie tales tunes.

  8. I’ve been looking for a new car tape. Right now we’re rockin to Barney’s tunes or Cedarmont Kids. I love Shout to The Lord Kids Worship CD too….a great diversion to Barney. We’ll have to find this veggie tales one!

  9. Excellent! My son goes to sleep with music, and we are always looking for Christian music for him to hear. And we love Veggie Tales.

But you do have to keep him from thinking of Bob and Larry when you serve them at dinner…

  10. I was singing “Rise and Shine” to the baby this morning and I realized that I had learned a little bit about the story of Noah through that song when I was a kid. I even knew at a young age that the ark was made of gopher wood. (although the song calls it gopher barky barky. But I got the point.)

I love hearing my kids sing about God. It is the most beautiful singing on the planet!

  11. I love Veggie Tales, but have wondered about the CDs – I’m glad to hear they’re good!

  12. I know what you mean about kids songs and needing a break. They really do listen and catch on to the truths of God though. Isn’t it awesome to hear your kids sing and talk about Jesus? I love it!!

  13. I do not have little one’s any more but my son loved veggie tales or anything christian in the car. I was so proud how much he learned and loved the Lord at just a little boy. He is sadly 15 lol and still every now and again sing a veggie tune. I have every sing C.D. they ever made and they are on my shelf waiting for my grandbabies one day. Be Blessed

  14. My kids LOVE Veggie Tales and I think it’s just a great way to keep them entertained while teaching them about God. I don’t have this CD but will have to get it for the car :)

  15. My son adores Veggie Tales! When I had to drive from PA to Baton Rouge (arriving here a year ago today!!!) with just me and the little guy, I told my husband I was going to need more Veggie Tapes because we only had one and 21 hours in the car with ONE Veggie Tape was going to mean a mommy with goo for brains by the time we arrived. Fortunately, my DFIL offered to drive with me and he had a portable DVD player that we hooked up so my son watched Thomas the Tank Engine all the way. When we went to Orlando for Thanksgiving the whole family got to know all the words to Lord of the Beans before we ever actually saw the DVD!

  16. Jackson loves veggie tales – I have got to get this one!! thanks!

  17. My little guy LOVES Veggie Tales also ;).

  18. Trust me Brenda. Any picture you’re seeing in your mind of my sister and Elway is probably pretty darn close. She’s nuts about that dog. And Boo, Cameron and I are still in that baby stage – our favorite movie is still Finding Nemo and our favorite music is still Hawaiian because it just hypnotizes him to sleep. I guess that music might be MY favorite but whatever. When he gets a little older, I’ll try this for sure!

  19. I have been hearing so much about Veggie Tales that even though I don’t have kids, I want to start watching them myself!

  20. Oh booMa! My two year old blows me away with her renditions of “open the eyes of my heart” and “Behold, behold, if anyone hears my voice” . . . from the get go I’ve surrounded myself and them with music and it blesses my soul when out of the blue they start singing like that! Yes in deed! Funny of funny’s we have a tape that is MAX 30 minutes long altogether called “tiny treasures” and I am SICK of it, but my little girl and her friend LOVE it, and so she’ll just pipe up – “oting is isposible” (nothing is imposible for God)
Ceadermont Kids has been a favorit for this household. Anyways, blessings!

  21. “Put some gas in my ford and keep me truckin’ for the Lord”…that’s Reia’s favorite song on her Veggie’s cd. We love them to. She actually likes the music better than the videos!

  22. I whole-heartedly agree. The wonderful thing is that my 6 yr old is now getting into my music. The more rockin’ the better. He loves Rebecca St James, Chris Tomlin, Jeremy Camp. I love to hear him singing about Jesus when he thinks no one is listening.
