In The Absence Of Julia Roberts, Will Ferrell Will Have To Do

I would like to take this opportunity to make an announcement:

I am going to the movies this weekend. AT THE THEATRE (or, as we say in Alabama, “THEEE-ay-tur”).

Oh, never you mind all the bellyaching that I did here. I’m all devil-may-care-ish now. Remember, I DID go grocery shopping without a list earlier this week (I’m ZANY! And WACKY! Practically a PRANKSTER!).

See, what I’ve realized this summer is that I’m the weird one. I’ve listened to many of my friends talk about going to see this movie or that movie; I’ve heard them compare the film version of “The Devil Wears Prada” to the book; I’ve heard them discuss the, um, merits (yeah. that’s it. MERITS.) of Johnny Depp’s performances (yeah. that’s it. PERFORMANCES.) in both installments of “Pirates of the Caribbean.” I’ve listened to them debate if “The Lakehouse” was any good or not.

All that to say: I’ve realized that people do actually go to the picture show, and they do in fact enjoy it.

But me? I’ve just been sitting at home watching re-runs of “Designed to Sell” and “House Hunters.”

So this weekend, after resolving to do better in the cinematic arena, I AM GOING TO THE MOVIES. WITH OTHER GROWN-UPS.

Now lest you harbor any notions that I’m returning to the cinema to see a thoughtful documentary about the plight of free range chickens or a character-driven piece focusing on A Tormented Artist, let me just clarify that there is only one man who could convince me to give up my regular Saturday night festivities of ironing clothes and watching TiVo’d episodes of “The Office” and “Project Runway.”

That man? Mr. Ricky Bobby. (By the way, that’s the third time I’ve linked to The Official Site, so I’m expecting a check from Sony any day now.)

And at least I’m opting for something highbrow where I won’t have to wage cinebattle against teenagers who don’t know how to turn off their cell phones or unruly patrons who talk back to the screen.

Ahem.

By the way, my re-entry into movie-going society is courtesy of Daphne, who has proposed a double-date of sorts on Saturday night since she and her hubby only live about an hour away. And while I have wracked my brain to try to remember the last time that Daph and I double-dated (Octoberfest our sophomore year with Bubba and Bryan, perhaps? No? No. Come to think of it, I’m not sure we have ever double-dated, which might make tomorrow night some form of Couple-y Extravaganza), I AM pretty sure that the last movie we saw together in the theatre was “Beaches,” which makes me feel like I’m approximately NINETY now, and obviously since we were seeing movies about relationships when we were teenagers but are electing to see comedies about, you know, NASCAR in our 30’s, we have grown up a LOT.

Veritable beacons of cinematic maturity, we are.

Daph and her hubby should probably be warned that the last time D. and I went with another couple to the movies, I was pregnant with Alex (I’m telling you – we don’t get out much), and I found myself sitting in “Spider Man” behind about three rows of former students, all of whom DELIGHTED in turning around throughout the movie and saying things like, “Hey! Mrs. H.! Did you SEE that? That was IRONY!”

Or better yet, “OOOOOH! Mrs. H.! SYMBOLISM!”

They were so proud of themselves that I didn’t have the heart to tell them to SHUSH IT, already. :-) Because while I think I succeeded in helping them to understand literary terms, I’d obviously failed miserably at conveying the essentials of movie-watching etiquette. And I think the latter may have been the more important of the two lessons.

So if you happen to be in our local Rave theatre tomorrow night, come find me. I’ll be the nervous woman in “Talladega Nights” who’s hoping beyond all hope that the movie is funny, because if it’s not, I’ll turn into the woman who’s confiscating cell phones and glaring stealthily at all the talky patrons.

I know. I have issues.

  1. Don’t forget to turn off your phone. :)

  2. You forgot scamp, Murphy. Enjoy, the picture show. I’m going to see it sometime this weeknd so we can compare notes.

  3. I still havent seen Devil Wears Prada, have heard so much about it I can’t wait. I ordered $70 – yes SEVENTY DOLLARS worth of movie tickets right before I left for Texas. All I really care about is the yellow-chemical-covered popcorn, but we’re going, soon as I get home. Enjoy!

  4. The last movie I watched in the THEE-ay-tur (we say it that way, too) was “The Chronicles of Narnia”. Before that…I think it was “Sweet Home Alabama”. I don’t get out much, I know. :)

Have a good time, and try not to make the national news. ;)

  5. First of all, forget friends. I think we are long lost sisters. Separated at brith perhaps? Last movie I saw? Ok, it’s been so long I can’t possible remember. But, I love Will Ferrell and will see this one–but maybe when it comes out in the home theatre since I can’t seem to get anyone to watch Reese anymore for fear of her accidentally burning our house down on their watch.

  6. we are going to see that tonite! i think the previews look hilarious…my hubby and i have already been quoting the movie just from the previews. i know, sad!! we are trying to convince the wife of the other couple we are going out with to see it…she has no desire. i’m all about making fun of nascar…especially with will ferrell! have fun on your night out! :)

  7. You know I am SO JEALOUS of you. I want to see this movie somethin’ fierce. Tell me if it’s good. I will be so angry if every funny line is in the previews.

Tonight is my girls night out. You think I could convince the girls to go see this instead of getting a pedicure? Is it sick that I’d actually think of that?

OK, well since you’ve linked to it, I think I’ll go watch that preview just one more time.

  8. Lucky you, I haven’t been to the movies in like forever. Are you going to do a tour of homes part 2 or can we still post on part 1. I kind of missed it and will be moving (only 2 streets away) in about a month so I thought maybe I could do it another time or if this post stays open I can just add. Thanks

Christina – I don’t think I’ll ever take down the Tour of Homes post for fear of a bloggy revolt. :-)

It’ll disappear off of the main page in a couple of days, but the post will stay open and active.

And then there’s, you know, the whole Christmas deal to look forward to. :-)

  9. Have fun!! We rarely go as a couple either. If we do we wait for it to get to the cheaper theatre, that way if we have to walk out, it hurts less! :D

  10. I will not wax obnoxious about Will Ferrell. . .but I will say “The Lake House” was good. . .exactly what it was supposed to be. . .an old-fashioned love story.

Before I saw it this summer, the only movies I’ve seen recently have been kiddo ones. . .”Chicken Little”. . .”Cars”. . .and (a very disappointing) “Curious George.” Before that it was the last installment of “Lord of the Rings.” Oh my!!!!!

  11. First of all, how weird is it that as much as you and I have discussed pop culture over the the past -gulp- 20 years, we really haven’t seen that many movies together?

Second, I would like to take issue with the fact that we saw Beaches together. I steadfastly believe I did NOT see that movie in the theatre. Am I wrong?

I believe the last movie we saw together was Soapdish (circa 1991–you were in grad school and I was still contemplating life) with Dweezil when we forced her into driving to Jackson for a double feature. I won’t say what the other half of the double feature was, but Dweezil didn’t care for one minute of it.

Third, on the double-date front, I do know that I have a picture some where of me and tt and you and D. at some sort of Fall-themed date party. Was that a double date or did we just get our picture taken together? I think it was early in our junior year, because I have my pseudo-progressive haircut and John Lennon glasses on in the pic.

  12. LOL, I am just glad we aren’t the only “non theatre” folks around. I am not too busy, too high brow, just too cheap! The only time we get cinimatic is at the $1 theatre. LOL

Hope you enjoy it. DH and I keep saying that is one we would love to see because I think Will Ferrell is a hoot!

  13. That’s funny you mentioned linking to Sony’s site. I actually got a comment on my Works for Me Wednesday post from the company who manufactures the product I mentioned, after I linked to their website!

  14. Well, if we lived near each other we could watch Friends on DVD together. Thats what I do on my friday nights, oh wait..that’s what I do everynight! I also don’t go to movies, I think I’ve been to 2 in the last 3 years! But I do read a lotta books! The Notebook? Read it! Anyway…I’m done rambling.

  15. I read a review that T N is supposed to be funny! I hope you enjoy your night out with adults.

  16. YAY for double date/movie night!!! HOW FUN!!!! The only movies we seem to see anymore are G rated ones and hubby and I always have children sitting between us! LOL!!! ENJOY!!!

    Blessings…

  17. “Hey! Mrs. H.! Did you SEE that? That was IRONY!” Or better yet, “OOOOOH! Mrs. H.! SYMBOLISM!”

That threw me OFF my chair laughing. But, I’m back now. Need a band-aid, or ice … maybe.

    Have a BLAST!!!

(PS – wait for Pirates 2 on video. It’s waaaaaayyyy too long to sit through in a theatre. Even my 12 year old was squirming at the 2 hours mark).

  18. Dweezil? Okay.

We’re so bad, we have movies from Netflix sitting on top of the TV for six weeks before we get around to watching them. But I’m telling you, I’m going to the picture shows to see The Devil Wears Prada. Can’t miss Meryl in this role. And Bev’s right. It’s all about the popcorn.

  19. Love your style, BooMama!

  20. Anonymous says:

You know you have a gift, right? Anybody who can make me laugh (hard) in the PICU the day after OHS has a true GIFT. :) And if it makes you feel better, Pace is practically dying to see that movie, and I’m close behind! I LOVE Will Ferrell!! (That’s a hyperbole, right? Or maybe not. It’s been a while.) :)

  21. Anonymous says:

Um, that would be me, Sarah, not Anonymous, in the previous comment, but it won’t let me sign in.

And is it a sickness, that I’m in the PICU waiting room, checking your blog?

  22. I think the last movie I saw with a grown-up was The Notebook- sniff sniff. I went with a friend for a girl’s night out. The last movie I saw with a grown-up who was also my hubby was TOY STORY 2!! How sad is that??? We picked a movie that was still a kid movie!!

  23. We have just started going to movies again in the last couple of months. (being brave and getting a baby-sitter is hard, not to mention expensive) but my huaband and I will definately be taking a break from taped episodes of the Office (the best show ever!) and going to see Talladega Nights….unless you say it stank-but I am hoping it will be as good as the previews.

    Your story about Spiderman–too funny!

  24. I haven’t been to the movies since Ghostbusters!!!! I was barely in highschool!!! I vow to go to the movies this weekend. Maybe.

    :) :) :) :)

  25. I am a fan of Will Ferrel, he is too funny! Actually he reminds of my hubby a bit–all those silly impersonations that he does. Have a great time and don’t forget the popcorn!

  26. I hope you enjoy your trip back to the movies! I get so annoyed with other movie goers with the yappn and the cell phones. I hope there isn’t much of that for you this go around!

I hope the movie is funny, the previews made it look good!

  27. Girl, I feel like I need to know you. You are HILARIOUS. I can totally relate to you. Infact, you and Sarah are my inspirations for starting my own blog.

  28. Boo…you are such a hoot! My friends & I went to dinner, “The Lake House” and Cold Stone Creamery back in June. we’ve decided to institute a once-a-quarter girls’ night out so we can do that more often.

Okay, I’m off to the beach in the a.m. I’ll catch up with everyone when I get back!

  29. i’ve seen my nascar movie for the year, thank you very much. it was cars. i’ve had my fill of loud brrr noises. hope you enjoy it though.

  30. We were just talking about that movie this evening. I’d like to see it, but I doubt I’ll be going to the theatre any time soon.

    Enjoy your weekend!

  31. I saw it tonight too…laughed til my cheeks hurt!

  32. Can’t wait to hear the re-cap. Have an awesome time and eat some butta-drenched popcorn for me…with LOTS of salt! Just in case you forgot.

  33. I saw To Kill A Mockingbird on TCM yesterday and thought of you! :>))

  34. Just remember to bring a bag of small pebbles with you. A stealthy shot in the dark at the back of a rube’s head does wonders. Good luck!

  35. This is SO not a movie I would watch. But I must admit that you and Addie have me considering it. I giggle to myself just a little just thinking about it.

Seriously. I giggle to myself. That’s saying a lot.

    Looking forward to your review.

  36. so, how was it?

  37. S-
Speaking of movies – and I do want to see some “Talladega Nights” – you MUST…MUST see “Little Miss Sunshine”! I saw it today. Its so freakin funny – funniest movie I’ve seen in a long time. If you appreciate “Waiting for Guffman” you’ll love “LMS” I’m sure. And it stars Steve Carrell from “The Office” so there.
Not sure if its playing in your neck of the woods yet since its something of a indie film with little money, but put it on the list.

  38. T – Saw it on the cover of Entertainment Weekly this week, and it SO looks like my kind of movie. Plus, a recommendation from you carries a lot of weight in my book. So we’ll definitely check it out. LOVE LOVE LOVE Steve Carrell.

Talladega Nights – it definitely had it’s moments – but it’s no Anchorman. I did laugh a bunch, and it was fun – but it’s not a classic. It does have some great quotable lines, though.

  39. I’m a new reader/comment-leaver. :-) At least I haven’t commmented before, that I remember.

My husband and I are a couple of those “movie-goers” who jump at the chance to sea anything remotely promising (and that’s a small but eclectic category for me). I know I have to see Ricky Bobby because we’ve already incorporated the quotes from the previews into our vocabularies. :-)

Have fun! And stay away from the popcorn. UGH!

  40. Boo – I was REALLY hoping you would say funniest movie evah! So what’s your verdict, Is it find-a-babysitter worthy, or is it, what should we get at blockbuster material?

  41. Oh My Word! Did Lori, OUR LORI, say she giggled to herself??? :D

  42. Saw it tonight! I’m so glad I went to the bathroom before the movie, cuz that would have been so embarassing! I think I snorted 10 times, and laughed so hard, I cried tears and my cheeks hurt.

    :-)

  43. I am jealous~ very jealous! I NEVER get to go to the movies. But I do hope you had fun. I’ll have to read your posts above to find out…

  44. I’m on vacation from my kids right now so movies is one of those sweet, rare pleasure I shall indulge in. Can’t say I have a need to meet Ricky Bobby though his wife does seem to be a character.

I hope it was all it was cracked up to be!

And it’s official. I like you! I’m adding you to my favorite blogs list.
    Aren’t you thrilled? :-D
