So That I Can Remember

Sometime in the wee hours this morning I woke up and heard Alex talking. He had gotten out of his bed, walked downstairs, come into our room, and apparently decided that he’d just talk until one of us decided to talk back to him. So I asked him what he wanted, and he said, “Oh, Mama! I want some chocolate candy!”

I explained that he couldn’t have chocolate candy what with it being DARK O’CLOCK and all, so he said, “Oh! Okay, Mama! Can I get in the bed with you and Daddy?”

I was too tired, honestly, to refuse him.

So he climbed up in bed, got in between D. and me, and continued to talk about the chocolate candy, and his froggie, and his bad dream, and the trade crisis in Central Asia (okay. maybe not that. but he was talking a LOT). Eventually we both went back to sleep, and when I got up this morning he was still in the bed with us.

I tried to gently crawl out of the bed so I wouldn’t wake up the little man – but as soon as my knee slid against the fitted sheet he popped up like a jack in the box.

I ruffled his hair a little and said, “Good mornin’, buddy – did you sleep good?”

He squinted at me and said, “Yeah. I sleep good, Mama.”

I got out bed, intent on Finding Coffee, and as I was walking out of the bedroom I heard Alex say, “Mama?”

“What, baby?” I answered.

“Did I sleep in the bed with our family last night? Did I sleep in the bed with you and Daddy – with our family?”

Something about the way he said it – something about his realization that yes, we are a family – it just took my breath away.

I could not love him more.

  1. Oh, what a beautiful little boy Alex is. I loved the pictures you’ve shared.

That is so neat that he’s grasping the concept of family now! How precious.

  2. Sweet boy! That boy is just plain ‘ole C-U-T-E!!! I had one of those moments today while watching my little 3 year old. I just wanted to freeze the moment in time and display it on my mantel for all eternity. They’re just so stinkin’ cute you could eat ’em with a spoon!

  3. Do you realize that we “met” here in blogland in February of this year? And in that time I’ve literally watched Alex grow from a baby to a toddler to a little boy, right before my very eyes. In every new picture you post he is maturing right in front of me. I’ll bet he’s grown 4 inches since February! Mama’s Boo is becoming a little man. :-)

  4. It just does things to your heart, don’t it? I don’t know about you, but I would have had to give him some chocolate candy for that. :-)

  5. Having a four year old around I know those moments too, moments when the words that come out of their mouth just grab your heartstrings! The innocent, curious, and authentic nature of a child is such a gift…

    Precious pics too!

  6. Oh, he is adorable! What a sweet story, you should put that in his baby book.

  7. That is so adorable. Our kids still love to crawl in with us. Sometimes on a Saturday morning – we’ll be sleeping in, and one of them will sneak under the covers with us.

    It is so sweet.

    Kelly

  8. Oh what a sweet face!

  9. Thanks so much for sharing the pictures! He is quite the cutie pie.

I can’t wait for the age when my Bean starts talking. It’ll be amazing to hear the wonder in their voice AND see it in their face at the world’s tiniest things.

What a sweet kid you have :)

  10. For me it’s not so much the cap and gown and diploma moments that I want to remember when I’m old and wander freely between dreams and reality, but moments like what you have described — they are the precious sustaining sticky residue of life.

  11. So sweet. Thanks for sharing. He has grown so much since the first pictures you showed us. Four is a great age, one of my favorites.

  12. BTW- My kids don’t come get in our bed anymore. We used to have the rule that they could, “as long as the sun was awake.” I kinda miss it actually. They only do it now if they have a bad dream, or are sick.

  13. So precious! When I watch the girls sleeping I just want to eat them right up; I am so overwhelmed with the blessings that they are.

Thanks for yet another reminder of how great our kids are.

  14. I know for sure that C would want to give him some sugar. :) And so would her mama for that matter.

It’s moments like these that make the days your head wants to explode worth it.

  15. As Molly once said (and I swear I have no idea where she came up with this expression) “He’s so cute I could dip him in my coffee!” Yep, he’s that cute!

  16. Those are the best moments. They even make up for the pain of childbirth, for the most part;) Maybe he and Caiden can grow up to be squirrels together? (Read my post if that made absolutely no sense.)

  17. Sounds, and looks, pretty lovable to me!! These are the moments – the precious moments we store in our hearts and never forget. Not even when they are grown and have little lovable ones of their own.

  18. Sweet, sweet, sweet. Lately, my daughter wants one of us to sleep on her trundle. She isn’t afraid, just wants us to. I don’t complain because I know it won’t last long.

  19. That is such sweetness. I love it.

And that profile shot of him… beautiful.

  20. How sweet! You’ve touched my heart.

  21. That brought tears to my eyes :) sweet! xoxo melzie

  22. Oh! Right through the heart! Kiss that boy.

BooMama, What a precious post (and what a precious young ‘un!) Aren’t you glad you have this blog (I know I’m glad you do!) so that 10 years from now you can remember this moment in each little sweet detail? Kind of makes me wish there had been blogs back in the day, when my boys were your Boo’s age.

My guys are 10 years ahead of your little guy, and the recommendation then was to NOT allow them to sleep in your bed at any time. (Has that advice changed?) Well, thank goodness my husband and I didn’t listen. We talk often these days, with 2 teenagers who are gone so much of the day (or sleeping so much of the day away!) of those sweet mornings of laying in bed “as a family.” You’ll NEVER regret–or forget–those moments.

    Enjoy him!

  24. Awww, big blue eyes and words to melt your heart.

  25. So sweet!

  26. What a precious boy. Those are truly the kinds of moments that we moms treasure in our hearts for always…

  27. Well of course you couldn’t, Momma. He’s precious.

  28. I’ve never commented before but this time I could not resist. I have a three year old son and he does the same thing. The first time he referred to us as a family with that certain reflection in his voice my heart melted. Now when he says it I almost feel guilty like maybe we don’t spend enough time together as a family because he makes such a big deal about it. Anyways your boy is super cute, glad you had that special moment.

  29. Just got reconnected with Internet world after several days away (it’s called Mammaw’s house in Colmesneil, Texas). So I’m checking out your blog: Cheetoey Chocalate/I’m NOT Pregnant post: Way to use your craziness for our amusement, BooMama. Like Patsy Cline, I’m sure you’re just crazy for lovin’ us.
Members Only jacket post. Funny, funny, funny stuff. And truly horrifying. What ARE all those extra buckles about? And who still has a stomach appropriate for wide, elastic wastebands? How old are these Sassy! moms — 22?
And Alex’s kid-of-the-year comment. Oh, yes. It’s things like that which keep them living on days when “Listen to me RIGHT. Now.” is about the cutest thing that issues forth.
Good stuff, writer person. Uh-huh. I said writer.

  30. From the mouths of babes.
He is a beautiful child and so young to be able to express himself so well.
I remember how I felt when my little one climbed into bed with me. Yes we were a family.
    Sweet.

  31. Sweet boy!

  32. How sweet !!! OHMYWORD!!!

  33. What a sweet thing to recognize — for both of you.

If he sleeps parallel to you, as opposed to perpendicular, count yourself one lucky lady!

  34. He is too precious! I havent been by in a while- just wanted to stop by and make sure you were still breathing! Life has been so crazy lately, I am finally able to sit and read- Your son made me smile!

    -H

  35. I have a 3 yo and a 1 yo and we have a king size bed to accomadate all 4 of us on the occasions when they won’t sleep in their own beds, like last night for example. I can’t refuse her when she says, “But Mama, I don’t wanna be by myself, I wanna sleep with you and Daddy.” THey are only little for a short time and I know I’ll be missing those times all too soon.
    What a precious boy!

  36. Oh I just want to squoosh dem cheeks! He is going to be a heartbreaker ya know? You know, right? Get ready mama! :)

  37. How precious! My son who turns 4 next week used to always end up in our bed, which drove my husband crazy. We finally started putting a “mat” down on the floor in our room (complete with pillow, sheet, fuzzy blankets, & little lion stuffed animal) so he can join us without disturbing us. If he wakes up before we get up and the sun’s up, he’ll still get in bed with us. We don’t mind. Isn’t “family” the best?
