As a child, I would come thisclose to rolling my eyes whenever my daddy turned the radio dial to the country station that had a Southern Gospel Hour on Sunday mornings.
WHO LISTENS TO THIS STUFF, I wondered.
Well, as it turns out: me.
And as an adult, I can’t hear a Southern gospel song without singing along – and as D and Sister will attest, whether or not I know the words is of very little consequence. I will just hum harmony if need be. Or, in some cases, “harmony,” because I tend to be a smidge off-key.
These days poor Alex is the one subjected to the Southern Gospel Hour on Sunday mornings, and – I KID YOU NOT – he puts those little gospel-esque harmonic tags at the end of everything he sings (“ALLLL THROUGH THE TOOOOOOOOOO-OWN” or, better yet, “Next time won’t you sing with SIIIIIING WIIIIIIIIIITH MEEEEEEEEEEEEE”).
Clearly, I have ruined him.
So anyway, it’s a gorgeous day and God is good and I just felt like hearing a little Southern gospel music this morning. Thought I’d share.
Happy Thursday!

Good stuff, that music! Is it my imagination or does the first singer look like a young Donny Osmond? :)
Thank you so much! I really needed that message this morning! I am 36 weeks pregnant, been on bedrest since about the second week in August. I have two girls – 2 and 4 years old. Thank the Lord I am staying home with them but that means money gets tight. Life can sometimes seem to be closing in on me but then there is prayer which gets me through it all! Thanks for taking the time to blog. It brings me such joy and you witness more than you know! God Bless You!
Amen, sing it sister!!! Love the song.
Wow!! Who is that? Was that your friend Wes? If THAT is Gospel then I’m ALL in!!!!
No – not Wes. It’s The Crabbe Family. Their CD is great. They were at BH last winter, but we didn’t get to go…heard they were incredible.
Oooo, I love me some Southern Gospel music best of all! (Although as I kid, I probably rolled my eyes at it as much as you did. Glad I grew up!)
Thanks for sharing the video!
I got to see them in concert at the National Quartet Convention and they did that song. (insert shouting and tears from a blessing here.)
They said it was their last concert. (insert shocked face here) I HOPE NOT!
THEY WERE AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love me some Crabbs. (only like this, though)lol
my little boy LOVES the Gaither videos!
I’ve been to a lot of concerts in my time, but the best concert I ever went to was when my dad and I went to see Gaithers and Friends. It was three hours of some AWESOME music. I really liked the Gaither Vocal Band and The Martins.
who knew white people could sing like that?
Southern Gospel is one of my faves. I grew up hearing and singing it, and I still love it today. Our church is having Homecoming this Sunday and we have a group coming to sing some good ol’ Southern Gospel. Of course, we’re having dinner on the grounds first at noon, after morning preaching.
I think I’m taking my crockpot dressing and baked candied sweet potatoes (home grown, gotta peel and cook ’em yourself sweet potatoes) and a dessert yet to be determined. Sweet tea and diet Coke will flow like the proverbial wine, too. Can you say chocolate layer cake, coconut cake, banana puddin’, pecan pie and homemade coconut cream pie? I may make one of those for a dessert. ;-)
OH HAVE MERCY Diane – you sure know how to speak my language, don’t you? :-)
What a powerful voice he has! I really enjoyed that and had it playing loud in my office :) Gotta spread the joy, ya know…
I like that type of Southern Gospel, but not the kinda with banjos and such. I think this should really be called Contemporary Southern Gospel :)
I love those Gaither homecoming videos…
Oh, you’re taking me back to my good ol’ Baptist roots. Though we normally sing very “Presbyterian” songs at our church, last Sunday we sang “Victory In Jesus.” OH MY HEART, I thought I would come right out of the seat–Hubs actually got tickled watching me sing it.
Amen! Must go dig me out some Martins later. :)
Thanks for sharing… I normally wouldn’t listen to something like that, but that was GREAT:) I love how multicultural the choir was!
Love it!!
ewwwww this reminds me of our Choir!! I love it!!! Praise God!!
Gospel or not, that boy has some DIMPLES! I can even tolerate rap, if the singer has dimples, I’m a sucker for them!! (No, Pace does not have dimples. But Caiden does!!) Sorry, a little off-track there. I should just email you:)
That was awesome!! I loved it!!
I ♥ this song!!!! me & The Rev sing this
Love the song! Ya know, my friend AuntieB sent this to me yesterday from YouTube. It was such a blessing to me then and again today.
First time I’ve listened to them and I love it. Always thought that “southern gospel” was like the twangy country music, but I guess I was wrong. At least not this one. Love it! Love it!
Thanks for posting. =)
You know what’s so awesome about kids? (There’s at least, oh, seven things.) They don’t know Mom can’t sing. Madeline actually believes — and I LOVE this — that I sing “very well.” Every time she tells me that, my heart gets bigger. I hate the day she realizes it’s not true.
You keep singin’ that gospel with Alex as long as you can.
