Springing Forward

I really do think that one of my favorite things about being in a new (to us, at least) house – particularly at this time of year – is that every single day is a revelation in terms of what kinds of plants and trees we have in our backyard. By the time we found this house last fall, all the leaves had fallen; so we’ve looked at the same barren view for the last three months, with no idea of what this place would look like come springtime.

But in the last week, things have started to fill in a little bit, offering us a hint of what’s to come.

(And don’t mind me, neighbors – I’m just the new Resident Obsessive Crazy Lady who likes to while away the hours taking pictures because hey! that leaf over there was a quarter shade lighter yesterday and I must capture the transformation for posterity.)

And if all the buds and blooms weren’t signal enough that spring is on the way, our ever-growing collection of errant golf balls is a pretty tell-tale sign. D. unearthed all of these while raking leaves yesterday.

It really is the best time of year, isn’t it?

So I’d just like to make it official:

Hey, spring.

Welcome back.

We’re so happy to finally see you again.

  1. We still have three feet of snow. Bummer. I am so hungry for a glimpse of green! Someone moved PA to the arctic circle without telling me!

  2. All I can say is, “Amen Sister!” I am so happy it’s been hovering around 75 for the past few days I can’t even contain my excitement.

I’m ready for days at the park, playing outside until 9pm–because it’s still light and all, bbq’s in the backyard. Oh wait, I don’t get that until July when the house is finished. That’s ok, all the other stuff is good too.

  3. We bought our house in December and had no idea what we had planted. We did know that the previous owners spent LOTS! of money on landscaping and didn’t give a flip about the interior of the house. We are now the proud owners of zoysia (sp?) grass which everyone comments on how thick it is. our neighbor’s cats seem to like it too, although for other reasons…

But I am very happy about the hydrangeas I found.

It’s fun though and I can’t wait to see what pops up each week!

  4. Well, that would be fun. I hadn’t thought about that but really, you wouldn’t know what’s growing around your place until spring. Apparently there’s a golf ball bush in there somewhere. Cool!

  5. We moved in our house last February and we too unearthed many finds. We completed having the land cleared to bring our horses here. The excavators found 3 engine blocks. My husband told them to push them in the gulley. Bad move, they were worth money in the recycling circles and we could have recouped some cash. Then for six months our horses found the mother load of nails and roofing tacks, which are rough on the hooves and we dealt with hoof issues for months.

Your finds are much better than ours – LOL! I’d rather find golf balls any day – unless they are coming thru my windows!

  6. Then you probably understand how excited I am lol This is my first spring in Oklahoma!! I don’t know what to expect at ALL! I do know that one of my favorite things in Florida about March was all of the azalea bushes were in bloom and it looked so pretty. So far here I am just excited to see the grass is starting to turn green again:-) I am used to grass that is green year about so this hay colored stuff seems odd to me;-)

  7. Oh, I hear you. The tulips are starting to come up and it’s almost time to get out there and start the dreaded WEEDING that lasts all summer.

  8. I love spring. . .it is a glorious time of year.

  9. Here in Iowa we are trying to thaw out of two consecutive blizzards. How jealous I am to see your springtime beauty! We were thrilled that the highs this week were in the mid to upper forties! Enjoy it!

  10. My kids call those white flowers “chicken flowers” because they are stinky. I haven’t figured out WHY – maybe they think chicken stinks – although they eat it when it is cooked for their dinner.
    Strange kids!
    Hooray for spring!

  11. suzanne says:

Ooooh, that does sound fun….to find out what spring will bring. Have fun, and keep up with the pics….lovely!

  12. Ah. Spring.
When the leaves bloom and the golf balls fall.

  13. I really need to get my flower beds cleaned out and planted. The weather is beautiful (as you know) so I should be doing it before it gets too hot and we both know that will be soon here!

  14. I love spring too! All the beautiful flowers, and baby animals! My Dad has always called me his “flower child” because at the first signs of spring I’d make him stop and let me pick the buttercups, then later the wild roses that grow along the sides of the roads. Yesterday I was out picking the buttercups in his field with my baby in tow…he got a big laugh out of that. From one generation to the next, I guess.

  15. Great post…Thanks for motivating me

  16. boomama…who knew you were such the photographer?? so impressed. i can’t second your enthusiasm for the upcoming season. but i agree…your pictures are breathtaking. i think it is already summer in texas. (big sigh)

  17. Whata fun to make new discoveries every day! We’re hoping the new tulip bulbs we planted last fall made it through our incredibly difficult winter. It’ll be fun to see what new colors we will get in our 27-year-old yard.

  18. Spring won’t be here for several more weeks. We’re excited when the temp gets above 45. Thanks for sharing pics of your blooms!

  19. Ah yes, Spring!! At last it is beginning to feel that way. Temps in the 50s+. Daffodil’s, Crocus and some shrubs are beginning to bloom despite the rain and wind.
I hope they aren’t drowned or blown away.
My patches of English Violets are so fragrant that on a warm day I can smell them from several yards away. Spring is my favorite time of year.

  20. spring has come to our neck of the woods too! It is my favorite time of the year.

  21. Those were great pics of the flowers. The golf balls?…True art. A-hem. (No really.)

All I’ve got to take pics of is my daffodil. Waiting ever-so-impatiently.

  22. Hallelujah and amen. I always look forward to spring, and even more so to summer.

Thank you God for bright colors, sunshine, the sound of birds and children laughing and a renewing of the earth and my spirit.

  23. Today I’m gonna post MY spring pictures on my blog today. Of course they would have to be from last year because any signs of spring are buried deep under layers of snow… not that I’m bitter or anything! At least it has stopped snowing and all the banks along the sides of he road are becoming a nice shade of the colour we have in these parts called “road muck grey”… it’d make a great crayola crayon colour don’t ya think?

Really enjoy those signs of life though… I remember the first spring in our old house. We moved in in January and in the spring, amongst the overgrown weeds were the remnants of the old doctor’s garden that had not been tended in at leaset 15 years. Rare beauties still emerged every yearthough. That first year we kept a lot of weeds for fear one of them was a rare treasure. We spent the summer describing plants to the garden centre and finding out the names of the unique specimins!
