1) Thank you so, so much for all the great recipes y’all have shared! I’m going to look at all of them a little more closely this weekend and plan what to try next week…Alex and I went to the grocery store this afternoon, and I’m now sufficiently stocked in both pantry items and poultry items that I think I’ll be able to propel myself out of my kitchen-related slump. Tonight I actually uttered the words, “Supper’s ready,” and D. said, “You cooked? Wow!”
2) Anyone know what to do for a dog who’s terrifed of lightning and yelping up a storm? Because I have a yellow lab who is beside herself right about now…the word “inconsolable” comes to mind.
3) Barb’s grandson – and his mama and daddy – could use our prayers.
4) I don’t know if y’all heard, but there’s a new grandmama in Arkansas this week. Diane was the very first person outside of my friends and family members to find my blog, and she has such a sweet, tender heart…I can’t even imagine how much she’s loving rocking that new grandbaby, and I bet this will be her most special Mother’s Day yet.
5) Tonight after supper (DID I MENTION THAT I COOKED?) I let Alex have a cookie. He took one bite, looked at his daddy, then me, and said, “OH, Mama and Daddy. I LOVE SUGAR!”
The child gets it honest. That’s all I’m sayin’.
In a former life, I was a small animal veterinarian. Lotsa dogs afraid of thunderstorms (and the 4th of July). A small comfortable place (aka den, crate with cushion; nesting area) helps them feel more secure. For really distressed dogs, tranquilizers sometimes work but when that storm rolls over the hill at lighting pace (pardon the pun), that’s a little bit too late….Sorry, that was a whole lotta not good advice, but if you want to email privately that’s all ok too.
Bach’s Rescue Remedy or any knock-off brand’s five flower essense works like a charm on freaking out humans and dogs alike. My vet recommended it for my dog 10 years ago for t-storm phobia and since then I’ve used it on myself and the kids quite often (not for t-storm phobia but just generic freaking out). You can get it any healthy store (Whole Foods/Wild Oats) and online.
Oh! I am so glad I found your blog, you are a fun loving girl, and you post killer recipes!!!
Thanks:)

Dear Alex,
You are cordially invited to come play at our house any time you like. Your proclamation regarding sucrose laden foodstuffs has convinced me that you and my children are kindred spirits. In fact, How would you feel about me asking your mama to consider some sort of pre-arranged marriage deal?
We’ll be waiting for you. Suckers in hand.
Lori
So what did you cook for supper? ;)
I’m afraid I have no advice for your storm frightened Lab, only my understanding. We had a black Lab named Molly for 11 years and she was terrified of storms. She’d tremble violently and would move the couch away from the wall trying to get behind it. I’ve heard vets can give them a nice tranquilizer, though we never tried that with Molly.
Oh sure. Make me cry over the stinkin’ dog. And that wouldn’t have anything to do with the fact that I’ve never met a Lab I didn’t like (poor widdle baby; send her to my place so I can love on her). Hug Lab fans over here!
Blessings,
~Toni~
Uh, oops, that would be HUGE lab fans over here, not hug lab fans.
1) I’m totally scammin’ the recipes from your other commenters. I’m saying so right here in Bloglic (like Public, but only in Blog World), so that when one of y’all has a flat tire in front of my turnip stand and I invite you to stay for supper and I say we’re havin’ Poppyseed Chicken and y’all say Didn’t we just have that over at BooMama’s I can say Yeah, we use the same Menu Compilation Service.
2) No help for you on fraidy-cat dogs. Our cat, hermit crabs, guinea pigs and sea monkeys are all real zen-like. Sorry.
3) Thanks for the link to Barb’s. I’m all read-up and prayed-up.
4) YAY Diane’s new Squoosh Muffin!! Don’t you know that having her for a Mamaw is going to be the BEST!!
5) WonderBoy would make a great playmate for Alex. He proclaims at the drive-through I WANT A MEDIUM DIET COKE WITH CAFFEINE! BECAUSE I LIKE CAFFEINE! AND GOD DIDN’T MAKE ME ALLERGIC FROM IT! Loudly enough to cause widespread snickers inside The Big M Supper Club.
Uhm, and inquiring minds want to know: What was for supper? ‘Cause if it was popcorn and jello, it doesn’t count, Missy.
You can give your doggie 50 mg of Benedryl (people Benedryl). My golden is terrified of thunder – but about 30 minutes after taking the medicine, he relaxes and is no longer afraid. Hope this helps!
Our vet told us to give the (b)Rat Terrier liquid Benedryl whenever he starts to panic over storms/loud noises. He said that he could prescribe a tranquilizer, but Benedryl is cheaper and usually works faster. Gotta love a vet who is looking out for your wallet!
We have a yellow lab that is scared too. He likes to hide with his head under the couch & shake. We cover him up with a blanket & hug him until the storm passes. Several years we adopted a greyhound from the track. When she would get scared, she would relieve herself & jump into the bathtub. She got so good at that she even would pull the shower curtain. A friend suggested we use St. John’s Wort whenever there was a storm coming. It worked a little bit.
I turn the tv up real loud when my dog was frightened of the thunder, that make it harder to hear.
Have a happy Mother’s Day!
Just poppin in to say Happy Mother’s Day!
I don’t have a lab and don’t know how to console one during a storm however, if you’ve not read the book “Marley & Me, life and love with the world’s worst dog” you simply must. It’s a heartful, engaging story about a family in the making and the tales of their “wondrously neurotic dog” who’s a lab. The author, Josh Grogan, writes extensively about Marley’s challenges during . It’s just such sweet, funny book that any dog owner can relate to but I would think a lab owner would especially enjoy.
Have you read the book “Marley & Me, life and love with the world’s worst dog”? It’s a funny, sweet, heartfelt, engaging story about a family in the making and the tales of their “wondorously neurotic” Labrador retriever. The author, Josh Grogan” writes about, among other tales, Marley’s reaction to lightning storms. This is a book any dog owner will LOVE but I think it would be especially enjoyed by the owner of a lab.
We had dinner at Brio last night for our Anniversary and I wanted to run and hide because of those storms…they got NASTY!!!!
Glad to hear your ready to conquer your kitchen fears…I love to cook!
Glad you got so many new recipes! Maybe you could pick your favorites and share them with the rest of us. I’m pretty sure every Mom could use some new ideas in the kitchen!
Hope you have a Happy Mother’s Day!!
I love sugar, too!!
Thank you, Boo Mama. We think Cameron will be released to come home today. We all have a lot to learn about juvenile diabetes but this is a challenge we’re up to.
So here I am – the shower KRISSY is giving her sister starts in four hours and here I am, all alone, making tons and tons of food. Sigh. I tell you, when it rains around here, it just dumps on us! LOL
I have a yellow lad as well, she is six. When it even rains hard, she thinks that she needs to sit on our laps. (she is 80 lbs) she gets so scared and tries to hide. You can see the look of pure panic on her face and it is awful.
We try and take her to a room that is darkest and lay on the floor with her until she calms down. We have even taken her in the master closet with us. If you find any cure, please share it!!
Try rubbing their fur coat with a dryer sheet. I have been told – that the static electricity in the air is what causes the anxiety in them. Rubbing them with the dryer sheet removes that electricity from their fur.
Hey Boomama, my sister has to put her doggy IN the car, IN their garage during thunder/lightning storms. HTH
We used to have a miniature Dachschund who was terrified of storms. We had to give him valium, and it really helped him.
Thanks for the mention and the sweet words, by the way. I’m home and trying to corral my scrambled thoughts enough for a post.
BooMama and Sister, hope you both have a happy and blessed Mother’s Day, y’all.
Love and hugs,
Diane :-)

I’m home now and trying to corral my scrambled thoughts to do my Sunday Dinner post. And some Emmy pics, of course. ;-)
BooMama and Sister, I hope y’all have a happy and blessed Mother’s Day.
Love and hugs,
Diane :-)
PS: Thanks for the mention and your sweet words, S.
I done sucked all the sweetness out of that young’un and left a love hickey on her little forehead, LOL! ;D
We have a black lab that is terrified of storms, she has torn the siding off of the back of our house several times AND torn up our back door trying to dig her way in the house during a storm.
We did everything possible, but finally had to resort to a mild sedative from the vet. If storms are in the forecast, we medicate her. Same for 4th of July and during hunting season (we live by the woods). Good luck!
My sister has a lab and their vet also recommended Benadryl. That’s three for Benadryl, I think.
Whoever suggested “Marley and Me” is so right on, because it is seriously the most poignant book. I read it, loved it and then the next night, picked it up and started it again. I read it twice without even blinking that’s how much I loved it.
My huge Golden Retriever is scared of the coffee grinder. When he hears me pouring beans, he runs into the kitchen, presumably to let me know he does not approve and then runs into the bedroom to hide, trembling the whole time. Sheesh. Yeah, he’s kind of a wuss.
