I Am In The Middle Of A Fashion Emergency

Every year Someone To Whom I Am Very Close organizes a Big Festive Deal for her work. And while I can’t be terribly detailed about the Big Festive Deal, I can tell you that it takes place in Nashville.

And I think we all know that Nashville is really famous for its, you know, peas.

OH, I kid.

Anyway, Big Festive Deal is coming up soon, and for the first time ever, I’m getting to go. I’m not a real guest or anything, oh heavens no; I’m going to be STWIAVC’s official gopher for the evening. But it is a dressy event, and this is going to be quite a challenge for me considering that I haven’t donned what I like to call “them fancy clothes” since I went to a Christmas party in Louisiana in 1999.

(As you can tell, D and I are really plugged into the social scene.)

(But if you ask me, a huge problem with dress-up parties is that nobody wants to watch TV. I mean, why would I dress up to NOT watch TV when I could stay home in my pajamas and watch TV ALL NIGHT LONG?)

Anyway, I do have some very fun, wide-legged black pants that Mama gave me after I had Alex, and initially I thought I would wear them and try to find some sort of dressy top. So today I headed to the Steinmart(s) and tried on eleventy five different versions of dressy / silky / cocktail-y tops and jackets, all of which left me sufficiently underwhelmed.

I brought home (well, I mean, I BOUGHT it – I didn’t just walk out of the store with it) a very pretty long, celadon-green jacket that wasn’t especially dressy but could be passable with the right jewelry and shoes, but on the way home I kept thinking that since the jacket was made of a pretty thick material and had long sleeves and required an additional shirt underneath, I would no doubt be BURNING UP HOT at the Big Festive Deal, and y’all know that I do not enjoy being BURNING UP HOT, and really, what’s the point of wearing a pretty new jacket if you’re just going to be BURNING UP HOT the whole time?

So I decided the green jacket was out. And I also realized, in a moment of horrified clarity, that being properly attired for the Big Festive Deal was going to require something of me that I try to avoid at all costs: a trip to the mall.

Now the good news is that Mama is here all week, so I knew she would be great reinforcement at the mall in terms of helping with the little man AND helping me pick out something to wear. Because those department stores have A LOT of clothes, y’all. And I get a little overwhelmed.

We decided to start our search in Macy’s because I love their INC line, and by the time we made a half a loop on the main floor I had ten or twelve things to try on. I also had removed my child from at least two mannequin stands and reminded him no fewer than six times to use your inside voice, please since most shoppers aren’t really hoping to find a forty-two pound four year-old doing his best imitation of a ROARING LION when they’re trying to make their way through Better Sportswear.

Sweet memories.

We eventually made our way to a dressing room, and Mama sat down in an area where people can relax and watch television while their daughters or mothers or wives or girlfriends are trying on clothes. Now this idea is great in theory, but I would just like to point out that when the TV in the waiting area is blaring “The Montel Williams Show” and the sound system in the dressing rooms is blaring Corinne Bailey Rae’s “Put Your Records On” and a four year-old is running up and down the dressing room hallway blaring various renditions of “RAAAAAAAAAAR STINKY POOOOOOOOOPY HEAD RAAAAAAAAAAAR,” the Macy’s shopping environment ceases to be even a little bit relaxing.

This is not a criticism. It is merely an observation.

Anyway, after at least an hour of trying on clothes and soliciting the opinions of no fewer than three complete strangers and hearing Corinne Bailey Rae sing, “Just go ahead, let your HAIIIIIIR down” over and over again in my head, Mama and I settled on a very simple black dress that I’ll be able to wear forever. I have big plans to sassy it up with some fun shoes and jewelry. And here’s a picture:

298017_fpxtif.jpg

In the interest of full bloggy disclosure, you should know that, well, I haven’t been the size of this model since I was thirteen. And I don’t think it’s the exact same dress because mine has a wider neckline, isn’t cut quite as low, has more of an empire waist and is just a smidge longer.

But other than those things, the picture is completely accurate.

And here’s my question: if you were going to wear this dress to a Big Festive Deal, what would you do for 1) shoes and 2) accessories? I am wary of doing the somewhat expected black shoes and pearls because I haven’t dressed up in a really long time and would prefer to have a little fun with what I’m wearing.

Which may lead you to wonder why I picked a simple black dress.

But still.

So if you have any suggestions, I’d love to hear them, just please don’t tell me to wear hose because NO, NOT GONNA, SORRY.

And if you have specific stores you recommend for great shoe or accessory finds (CHEAP! I LOVE CHEAP!), all the better. Just know that if you put more than two links into your comment, it’ll automatically go into the moderation folder, but I will rescue it as soon as I can.

Normally I do pretty well with fashion stuff like this, but today’s mall-related adventures left me all shopped out. So thanks in advance for your help – you’re the best internets in the whole wide world (web).

  1. OH YES MAM – I have the shoes for you! They are peep toe black heels from Target and I will email you the link. They have a SQUARE peep toe instead of round, and they are ROCKIN! (and only 24.99) Also, I think a red beaded necklace would look very fashion-forward and funky!

    Fun!

  2. Being that I have not a fashionable bone in my body… if I were wearing that dress to a Fancy Schmancy Event, here’s what I would do. I’d just ask my mama. She is the queen of accessorizing, and I just know I’d look all cutsie and fancy and fun… completely thanks to her. You should have seen me, completely panic-stricken the few days before my shower, attempting to get an outfit together without her imput. Scary things. But, I’m terribly sorry to say that she left AL today, and thus cannot drive down and help you out.

Now I know this helps you out a TON… and you’re so very welcome. Ahem.

  3. Two words: RED SHOES. Target has some cute cute ones right now: There’s the Xhilaration Skyler Mary Jane (I’d put the link, but it’s SUPER long) (and they look more grown-up than “Skyler Mary Jane” would suggest) and the Mossimo Slingbacks in Paprika. A red and purple bead necklace would work awesome, or a kicky Mr.-Firley-style kerchief! Heh!

  4. Clemntine says:

Oh, GIRL! Have you ever come to the right place for help with BFDA (Big Festive Deal Attire)!

Now, let’s just all forget for a moment that the last BFD I attended was held outdoors and the party favors were OFF wipes. Let’s also forget that where I come from, a hot pink tube top with gold lame’ hotpants is “puttin’ on the dog.” Lastly, I’ll have to ask you to forget that most of the people in my near-limbless family tree get by on fewer teeth than they have fingers (meaning a number between 2 and 7 – genetics~don’t ask).

Okay. Black dress, fall-ish BFD. My Double-Your-Money-Back-Guarantee advice is this: don’t wear a bra and no one will remember your shoes or accessories, so you can wear anything you like.

    You’re welcome.

    Anytime.

    No, really.

  5. Maybe you should get the red jacket that was featured today on Rachael Ray:
    http://www.rachaelrayshow.com/show/segments/view/grettas-fall-fashions/

I will do whatever is in my power to not let this trend come back.

  6. Henna tattoo Chinese letters up the backs of your legs in lieu of hosery. Nobody would even bother with looking at your shoes. Total comfort.

  7. http://www.spanx.com are AWESOME!!! They hold you in in the right places and you don’t feel like you are going to die from being squeezed to death, and it seriously feels like you have nothing on…. (Note: there is also a cheaper version available at Target called Assets by Sara Blakely)

As for shoes… you could really put anything with black… Red shoes or Green patent leather with Green accessories …. You could even do some type of dress shoe that has a pattern on it.. Unlimited options with an awesome dress like that.

  8. I’m watching “Mother Angelica Live” and she has on black and a large gold pendant, but alas, she is a nun.

Make sure your shoes are comfy…for both gophering and cuttin’ a rug.

    I’m just sayin’. :)

  9. The other comments are right, henna and no bra would definately not have anyone looking at your dress.
But I like the red shoes idea, or maybe some faux leopard-y print ones?

Did you say the dress was empire waist? Did you take a side view to make sure you don’t look pregnant? The empire waist is no friend ‘o mine.

Anyway, if your just the gopher, no one will probably even notice!

  10. Hi BooMama,
I’m officially de-lurking to add my fashion cents. Big chunky pearl necklace and RED SHOES! Do not be afraid of a good red high heel shoe! The Target Mossimo Perla Wrapped Platform shoes look amazing, but a maybe a tad bit uncomfy? So, the real question is: what will you suffer for beauty?
    LOVING the dress!

  11. OK no fashion advice, but if you are not wearing hose try the Sally Hanson spray on nylons. It sounds strange, but it works. Practice a time or two before the event, but it is really easy to use and looks like you are wearing hose when really you are not.

  12. Kohl’s has some really beautiful patent burgundy pumps (really classic-no hootchie factor). Vera Wang now has a line there and there are beautiful, well-constructed pieces at pretty reasonable prices. Good luck!

  13. Oh my goodness… I’m thinking that this whole “Sally Hanson Airbrush Legs” (aka spray-on nylons) MUST be addressed in the next big boo podcast. Maybe it’s just because I live in Denmark, but I had NEVER heard of this before momtomom’s comment. Do y’all use this? Do LOTS of people use this?

  14. I am going for the henna tattoos TOPPED off with the spray on nylons and I want to know EXACTLY what Martha and Sissie would make of you wearing them ! ;)

I would go for a kitten heeled shoe, peep toe that would be pretty and comfortable (your average kitten heel is about 1 inch)

Also, go and get a LOT of this seasons colours in big chunky cheap jewellery……..what about orange, brown and teal. (I am serious!)Big wooden bangles.

I DO like the black dress and you give honest fashion advice that, as a fellow apple shaped woman, I have taken on occasion. I just think that black dress COULD (not saying it WILL) look matronly unless you “sass” it up with modern, fashionable accessories in this seasons clours and shapes. Also note I am in England and those colours are OUR new seasons colours………..but red high highs sound like an evening of agony to me !

  15. What about a cute animal print shoe? You can find them in any style and any price range, and I believe they’d be a blessing to most any girl’s wardrobe, even beyond this one fancy event.

  16. The problem here is that there are varying levels of fancy and if you are going all the way to Nashville (the land of sequins, second only to Dallas), I’m wondering if this is fancy enough. The good thing about this dress is you could dress it way up for fancy or down for church.

  17. I have had my eye on some red patent shoes for a while now and I think that is the perfect dress for them. So you go buy some and wear them for me….I don’t have anywhere to wear the dress and you have the perfect reason to get the shoes!

  18. CHUNKY everthing!! Platform peep-toed shoes & huge chunky=funky beaded necklace, bracelets and earrings! Teal and red!!!!

  19. I would go with rhinestone accessories…and high heels that you will never wear again :)

  20. I have a similar black dress. I wear just boring black heels with it since I’ve only worn it to church. I brighten it up though with a clunky teal necklace and earrings from Target. After reading the other comments though I must get something in red. I wish I had reason for red shoes though. That would be so fun!

I’m off to Steinmart(s) this morning to see if I can track down that skirt you wrote about over the weekend.

  21. I am usually not one to give fashion advise, BUT, I did see some gorgeous shoes on the VIEW yesterday that were silver metalic pumps w/a black heal and a little black over the toe. The fashion expert was all crazy over these shoes, saying they are the new modern classic, and everyone MUST have some like them. The best part is they are at Marshalls, for under $50.
As for jewelry, no clue here.

  22. Oh…honey! Please tell me you are NOT going to wear that luscious dress WITHOUT pantyhose….unless you have the tan of the century…….wear the hose.

I am more of a classy taste person, and would encourage the pearls and comfy black pumps.

  23. I am not the one to rescue you here, but I just wanted to say that I’m not even sure I was that model’s size when I was 13.

  24. BooMama, I’m going against the grain (of comments). Red shoes are lovely, but can I recommend a silver or gold shoe? Lately, there have been some beautiful shoes in shimmery tones, and 1) they are SO MUCH EASIER TO ACCESSORIZE because you can match the color, and 2) they’re easier to find in heights that are managable for the party. I like 3-inch heels, but after an hour, I’m ready to spike myself. There are some cute, classy, and comfy shimmery shoes.

And, you can pick a shoe color that matches your wedding set. Just for added sparkle. You would be Blingy BooMama.
    Love ya!

  25. I vote for kelly green accessories. I don’t know if you are a green kind of girl, but green and black is such a fun combination and will make your simple black dress less, shall we say, staid. I live in the Northeast, but I keep seeing these styling women on the street pairing up black and green.
    Have fun, girlfriend!

  26. I would keep comfort a pririoty for the shoes. Spend extra on them if you have to, and go cheap on the jewelry. A simple necklace with one chunky piece on it or a chunky necklace.
Go for some sparkle, too. Sorelli is really in down here. It is pricey but there are knock-offs out there that you can find. A little sparkle will dress up the black and fit in with Nashville’s bling.
The black dress was a classy choice!!

  27. The Michele D brand of shoes at Dillard’s is excellent! They are a little pricey (average 60 bucks) but so comfortable and so cute that they are worth it. I haven’t had the opportunity to check out their latest stuff, but I bet it is cute. I would go for some color in the shoes, but not too wild, so you can wear them with other things too. As for jewelry, doesn’t Steinmart(s) have some great costume jewelry? We don’t have one in town, so I don’t get there often, but it seems I always look at the jewelry. Just buy something fun. The dress is great and I hope you get more chances to wear it.

  28. I’d do a necklace that’s really funky and clunky.

  29. I agree with the recommendations for red heels, something comfy. And some chunky, somewhat snazzy jewelry.

But ignore the people telling you to wear pantyhose, regular or spray-on. Don’t people know that Southern girls do not wear hose?!

  30. Sweetie, I always say diamonds are a girl’s best friend. Go with comfortable metalic shoes (if you feet hurt you WILL be miserable) and diamond (CZ) accessories. Take a look at http://www.liasophia.com they have beautiful jewlery. If you need a consultant, e-mail me, my sister-in-law can help you. Oh, I did love that red jacked from Rachael Ray’s.

  31. Have we forgotten the Boot Trend? I still think you could get a way with a high, classy black pair of boots too! The other suggestion for silver/metallic shoes was actually my first vision of the whole thing! I love my sivlerish shoes…they rock, and they are really high and pretty too! Since you aren’t wearing hose you can get away with a high heeled sling back, it will dress it up a little. Whichever way you decide, I am sure you will look smashing! PICTURES are a MUST…you can’t involve the internets on this and NOT post pictures, that would just be WRONG!

  32. Kimberly H. says:

I say go for red or leopard print shoes and color in your jewelry. I liked Target’s peep toed heels in patent red leather(?). I so agree with whomever said spend $$ on the shoes and not the jewelry. Your feet killing you will take all the fun out of the evening. Add a small patent leather red bag and you are ready to go! Have fun dressing up!

  33. Strappy heels. ANY COLOR- fuschia, red, gold, silver, bronze– it’s all good. Something tha twill pop. My fav place to get great shoes for cheap ($15) is Ross. Or Payless is having a BOGO right now.

As to where to buy jewelry finery, Kohl’s has a large selection as does Target.

THIS would be nice with a necklace that has some weight to it.

I guess it depends if you want to stand out or not. Behinds the scenes or in the spotlight?

Or a brown/black tortoise shelled color shoe (I can’t remember where I saw it)would look nice with seem dark brown/gold/black jewelry (yes, all three colors is what I envision). Trust me, it looks good IN MY HEAD.

Happy shopping! Remember, the mall is your friend. The mall is your friend. So long as you have a latte and are wearing flip flops. When jewelry shopping, be sure to wear a black top with a similar neckline to your dress. It’ll make it MUCH easier to find one that is just right.

  34. BooMama:

There’s only one bit of advise I can give here:

    LESS IS MORE

A simple black dress can turn heads if not overdone.

    ….just sayin’

  35. I agree with wearing Red Shoes. It would look so hot! I love buying shoes at DSW Warehouse. Tons of choices and tons of fun and …. although not tooo cheap, reasonable…

  36. Red shoes are great……but have you seen the Leopard skin shoes???? And accessories? You’ll be ROARIN’ for that Big Deal Festival!

    Diane

  37. Since it is an evening festif, I recommend a strappy heel in a metallic or leopard. Pair it with a chuncky necklace with sparkle and, if you have the hair for it, an updo.

That dress is fabulous. You can accessorize it for ANY occassion.

Have you seen Manolo’s Shoe Blog and/or The Sartorialist’s blogspot? Both are fun and inspirational!

  38. Metallics are in this year– I’d totally do a metallic silver or pewter or bronzy shoe. J Crew has pricey Mary Janes but i bet DSW has a cheaper knockoff.

  39. Oh, I’m hoseless as long as possible.

I suggest slingbacks for shoes. Target has some on sale right now. I’ll send the link in a minute.

  40. I say totally red shoes if you can find a good pair. Also, look for the new chunky style jewelry. I have no links for and I am not sure what you have, but if it were me I would go to Sam Moon or Charming Charlie’s for some cheap fun jewelry!

  41. I’m in agreement with the comfortable footwear clique.Something with a lower heel for sure.Especially if you really will be officially gophering, comfortcomfortcomfort. And we all know that you can be comfortable and SAAAASSYYY at the same time.Choose something a little unexpected colorwise for the shoes and jewelry; I like the green idea from above. Just do us proud and be sassy and chic(k) without being tacky or gaudy. Also, you’ll need a really cute clutch that you can put lipstick and a little cash and some kleenex in and maybe your cellphone too. Above all, have a great time.

  42. Some really cute, sassy peep toe HIGH heels and really sparkly jewelry! Something black and silver maybe. I am not so good with the accessories, but DEFINITELY high heels!

  43. I am voting for a sparkle bra to shine through your dress. (It is Nashville after all)

And also Big shiny red Dorothy sparkle heels. You can never have too much glitter.

But if that seems a bit much, then I vote for the animal print shoe and gold accessories.

A great place to find cheap (but nice) jewelery is FashionBug.

    I know!

  44. BooMama–I’d look for some leopard print pointy toes–there are lots of choices out there in varying heel heights…I bought a pair this spring–zappos.com–a site which I love, by the way! I have not been disappointed with my selection and have found them to be very versatile! I do think I sent a few of the little ladies at our church in to cardiac arrest when I wore them to church but…I digress.
I agree with something chunky for the necklace and bracelet(s). I have also had lots of luck at Target and Kohls–again, I would choose something that you could also pair with a cute jacket and jeans later…

  45. Love the dress! I like the idea of red patent or animal print shoes. If they had a wedge heel and peep toe they would provide the sass and comfort a gopher would need. Plus they would look cute with your trouser jeans later. I am all about multi-purposing. Now we will need a picture of the finished outfit at the the Festive Deal.

  46. I think these: http://www.zappos.com/n/p/dp/30947853/c/29669.html are adorable, but they may not be real practical.

    I really like these:
    http://www.zappos.com/n/p/dp/10519492/c/5266.html
I know they are, you know, velvet, and I am really wondering why I am drawn to them. But I am, nevertheless. They are not on the cheap side of cheap, but they aren’t second mortgage either.

    Happy shoe shoopping!

  47. I agree with Sandy – red shoes – or something equally sassy! And a fabulous necklace – NOT pearls!

  48. So… reading through your comments has made me realize that apparently not all bloggers wear sweats and flip flops all the live long day like I do. These are some stylin’ broads!

I vote for trying to make EVERYONE happy. A chunky bright green necklace, rhinestone earrings, one slingback metallic strappy red heel, one animal print boot, Rachel Ray’s jacket, a sparkly bra, pearls so everyone will know you’re classy, and of course, cornrows.

    Photos are a must.

  49. Red – definitely. Red

  50. Well, the absolute LAST person you want to ask for fashion advice is me…I haven’t been to any sort of “function” that required dressing up since I left my buying career at Nordstrom 10 years ago. I wouldn’t have the first clue as to what’s in style anymore…and besides, my clothing accessories are usually more along the lines of dust bunnies today’s lunch. Good luck! These other gals sound like they have some pretty good advice for you!

Be sure to let us know what you pick so we can all sleep better. :)

  51. I must not be very imaginative as my first thought when I saw the dress (gorgeous, BTW) was pearls! Black pumps!

But now I’m thinking definitely peep toe shoes in an actual color, like red. Or the pretty celadon green. Or something.

And a hangy down necklace, maybe some chandelier earrings? Or are they so yesterday?

    Let us know!

  52. Nope. The previous poster was wrong.

*THIS* is the world’s longest link:

    http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/2937844/0~6006558~6006559~6006574~6007665?mediumthumbnail=Y&origin=category&searchtype=&pbo=6007665&P=1

    These fishnets. These shoes.
Add black patent belt if it works.
    If not, black patent clutch.

[I have GOT to get a life. Seriously.]

  53. Many years ago I actually attended a few Big Festive Deals in Nashville, and I think the dress you’ve selected is great. I differ from many of the other commenters, however, on the need for chunky accessories. In my humble yet earnest opinion, unless you’re a size 2 adult, chunky accessories=chunky appearance, and I don’t know about you, but I can get all the help I can to avoid the chunky look. It’s not attractive on me. I love the strappy heels idea. Unless you’re going with super spikey heels, I’d avoid pumps like the plague. I think the color depends on the event. Fun, younger crowd? Pick you color. Raising money for a cause? Time to be more conservative. You have a lot of options besides pearls or chunk for a necklace. What about a piece of jewelry you already have, attached to a ‘transparent’, thin ribbon. You could introduce a lot of color that way. Or do an updo for your hair and pin a broach into it. You could add a ton of sparkle-in a classy way. With the great black dress you have, less is more. Have fun!

  54. To dress it up I really think you need sparkle – especially in Nashville. I would go with some sort of silver shoe and then I would try to find a chunky rhinestone bracelet or even multiple bracelets (for a little funky). Keep the earrings simple and the necklace simple. Or go chunky necklace, simple bracelet.

  55. I’m not good with accessories, so I’ll leave that to the experts…I like stuff at Coldwater Creek, so perhaps you will find something there…if you have one nearby.

But the Rrrroar, stinky poooppy head, just cracks me up and I think mirrors my life completely….ahhhh, memories…which is why I only go to the mall alone, which is why I haven’t been to the mall in over a year…

Can’t wait to hear about your fun outing…
Have a wonderful day! Praying for you!!

  56. I think you should put on sadi dress, and fly out to Texas right quick and let Caroline do some body art.

From what I’ve seen this morning, she’s quite the talent.

She could probably paint on some awesome shoes for you, too.

And think of the impression you’ll make.

  57. You’ve got to spice that cute LBD up with some super fun sling-y type heels in a great color. How do you feel about, say, a turquoise? You could do some really fun, beady kind of jewelry too. I didn’t read any of the other comments, so someone more fashion forward than I has probably already suggested all this, but I hope you have a great time!
Let us know how you decide to sass it all up :)

  58. I have no real fashion advice beyond COLOR COLOR COLOR (or, COLOUR COLOUR COLOUR as Rinty in England would say). I mean, come on – it’s black! Just go with your favorite color and it’ll be fine.

My only requirement for this excellent and not-at-all previously offered advice is that you post pictures. I want to see my favorite blogger all fancy-schmancy.

  59. I love the idea of fishnets but don’t think you are the type. I also like the idea of red or animal prints and also the greens with black.
I think you need to go with a long necklace and gold stud earrings. Nothing too mathcy matchy.
Here is a necklace that would be cute: http://www.forever21.com/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=FOREVER21&category%5Fname=necklaces&product%5Fid=1042761446&Page=all
And then pair it with a chunky gold bangle. Now you can go with a gold metallic shoe or something green and black.
    Bangle:

  60. I just posted a comment with 3 links. I hope you got it!

  61. Donna (coaching in GA) says:

First off I have to compliment you on your international reach. Wow, you have readers in England and Denmark – how cool is that. I am no fashionista, but I don’t like the sound of green patent leather (Ally P is likely lightyears ahead of me when it comes to fashion, but I just can’t picture it) I love the red patent idea with a funky necklace and earrings. I remember you and Bigmama not being fans of patent leather, but I don’t think you should count it out for this ocassion. I always find great jewelry at Steinmart. They have cute trendy stuff at reasonble prices.

  62. Jodie Dardeau says:

Yeah, I’m with Kelli on this one. :) I think you should just let Caroline paint the bottoms of your feet, then shoes won’t even be an issue. Plus you’ll be the most comfortable girl in the room, unless you count the mortification of having paint on the soles of your feet. :) Aside from that, most comfortable. I promise. :)

  63. Jodie Dardeau says:

And maybe she can paint you one of those nice moustaches like she painted on herself. I’m telling you, take the fashion world by storm! :)

  64. Fashionwise, I am a neanderthal, but I would go with a Victorian drop necklace and hair jewelry from http://www.byrddesigns.com/

  65. Do you have a Ross? They have cute jewlery – cheap! You nees something with a little flash to it! A sparkle!
    HAVE FUN!!

  66. I was going to suggest a scarf thingie until someone referenced Mr. Firley.
But since he seldom wore empire-waisted black dresses, it’s likely no one would draw the comparison…unless you misineterpret what you hear while eavesdropping outside a window at the Big Festival Deal and bug your eyes out in utter schock and befuddlement.
Shoes? Expensive flip-flops. No fear of being confused with Firley with those.
I sure hope you make the right choices so your life isn’t ruined forever. Good luck!

  67. i had such high hopes for leaving you some classay fashion advice.

    until…

i read your 870 comments. ranging from animal prints peep toe shoes to big and clunky to something from nordstrom costing a mere $425.

so i decided my dansko clogs or converse white lo-tops were out of the question.

i am SO out of the fashion loop.

  68. Boomama- I’m just going to tell you what I’ve seen around here in Big D. I definitely agree- “Less is More”. I would go with an animal print or a pewter or metallic HEEL of some sort. Closed toe, open toe, strappy, whatever you like but most definitely needs to be as substantial a heel as you can stand! And I would wear some sort of thin long necklace that you either leave very long in front (Very in!) or loop it around a couple of times. Nothing too flashy! We sorority sisters must stick together!

  69. Having “gophered” at many such events, you should NOT buy new shoes AND go without hose unless you want to experience all kinds of miserableness (?) that evening. I agree that unless you have awesome AND tanned legs going without hose is a bad idea.

You can kill two birds with one stone and purchase super control-top hose (Donna Karan for instance) and forego the Spanx. Definitely should opt for some type of control undergarment in solid black dress. Spanx are also sold at Chicos and are great as previously testified.

Lastly, next time Mom is there why not leave her and A home to play and you go shop relying on salesgirl/strangers’ advice? No offense to all of your well-meaning Internet friends, but this really calls for help from someone who can see all of you in said dress and accessories – as in a full-service clothing store. I know that doesn’t scream “cheap” but it all depends on how good you want to look, right? Don’t shoot the messenger, just think on these things. :-)

  70. If I were in your shoes, I’d browse the sale racks at all my favorite shoes store and find a totally frivolous very bright and/or sparkly or print pair of shoes, and then buy a necklace to go with it. So if you find gorgeous red shoes, you could pick a gold or red necklace to go with. You’ll always find a necklace that fits. Shoes are harder. And who doesn’t love a reason to buy frivolous shoes?!

Oh, and of course I’d shop on ebay for the jewelry. Their vintage jewelry listings are favorites of mind. Hmmm, vintage rhinestones… you’d fit right in there in Nashville!

  71. I don’t have time to read through the thousands o’ comments at the moment so please excuse me for no doubt repeating what someone else has said.

I would do red shoes and red beads. I don’t know how fancy said Big Festive Deal is but I have some fabulous red flats I got from Payless. They have a red bow on the toe and a suede patch on the end, they sort of look like super cute point shoes. I get comments on them every time I wear them.

If you need heels I would do a cute mary jane style. I have some black ones from Target that are awesome. You might check to see if they have them in red.

Depending on the dressiness of the event you might be able to get away with some sassy red beads. Goody’s has all of theirs on sale for 70% off right now which makes them $3. I think that might qualify for the CHEAP category.

The good news is that as of today it is finally cooler than the face of the sun here in Nashville. That will help with that whole Burning Up Hot thing so let’s all just pray it stays that way.

  72. Oh, honey, that is so perfect! I am reading your post and thought “little black dress” IMMEDIATELY and I am SO glad you got the vibes!

I like a pop of color, especially red, with black. Some strappy sandals in that color? Or LEOPARD print?!?!
Here are some black shoes, that my be nice

Now, accessories, I would say big earrings: start http://www.mysilpada.com/sites/carol.doonis
here: go to the catalog: page 9, F: or page 30-31 B and F. Fun green colors! Ok, one more from there:page 80-81, P and earrings.

I think you can wear those together. Good luck!

  73. I would go with metallics-silver. Very big in France right now (where I live), If you have an H & M there, they have some fantastic black and silver scarves and big dangly silver filagree earrings. Very FUN!!

  74. I haven’t read any comments, and there are, of course, seventy-FOUR (probably EIGHTY-four by the time I get done typing this) but I think you should totally get SILVER SHOES! Not sparkly silver, gray-silver patent leather.

I know the fashion shows tend to put red shoes with a black dress, but I’m always afraid to go that LOUD, but basic black shoes are too boring. You want to spice this up, so I say silver.

I tried a pair on at 9West, square peek-toe that were so rockin’. The sales girl (who appeared much more hip than I) told me they are fabulous party shoes for this winter and wanted me to get them, but I didn’t because I have no cute little black dress such as YOURS with which to wear these hot shoes. So I bought boots instead. I’ll try to attach the link.

    http://www.ninewest.com/

They don’t seem to have the ones I tried, but if you search “bradeton” that will give you the idea I have in mind.

I know these are pricey, but maybe you could find something similar at Tar-Jay.

As for jewelry, well, I love the costume jewelry at Talbots and Ann Taylor for a dressy night out.

  75. My advice leans more toward staying at home, eating a bucket of Fried Chicken, drinking a case of Diet Coke and watching TV. You will look great in whatever you choose to wear. Just relax and enjoy (well after you finish gophering of course)

  76. I have a dress almost the same but in brown. I wear a funky necklace and earrings that I got from Steinmart and carry a leopard print purse. Open toed heels with a strap would be cute if you don’t want to wear hose.

  77. Well, I was going to comment and tell you to look to the “Queen of Bling” for fashion sense in Nashville.

    Dolly Parton.

    Need I say more?

However, I then remembered she once said, “it costs a lot of money to look this cheap” and decided she would not be your GO-TO girl in your current fashion emergency situation.

Also, your mama must have impeccable fashion sense. If my mother were to go with me I know I would be leaving with something from the Koret line and SAS shoes.

  78. Hi Boo Mama!
    I have a few suggestions:
1-strappy silver sandals and marcasite jewelry…you can go big and bold for little money (QVC has great choices! I would do a long drop pendant and some duster earrings and a pretty bracelet.

2-chunky brown necklace and cuff…small earrings and peep toe animal print shoes.

    3) I love the red shoe thing too. You could get a cool cz or rhinestone long drop earring and just that and the shoes…fun, easy and sexy.

    Good luck!

  79. Ummm … no plastic beads. EEEYYYuck. Crystal beads would be lovely and would add shimmer. Red would be okay, but there is such a large selection of gorgeous necklaces.

Anywhoooo… I would recommend wearing comfortable shoes … especially if you’re going to be a gopher. Your feet will thank you.

Although, achy feet from oh, sooo sassy shoes makes for good blogging!

  80. They say to have ONE thing be your “THANG” like just fancy shoes, or just a fancy necklace. Let that article of clothing do the talking. I personally would do some Red heels- but that’s just me. :)
Careful on the neckalce- you don’t want to take away too much from that neckline. :)
    Hop this helps!
    K

  81. I am the resident personal shopper for my friends! I love to take them to the stores and pick out their clothes and accessories. Off the top of my head and going by what you said, I went to Target and found everything you will need. It is cheap and beautiful. I forgot to write the page numbers but I have the descriptions.
Shoes, In my humble opinion I think black strapless shoes are the way to go. I picked out two choices, Mossimo Helaine Jewel Satin Strap Heels. ($19.99) or Hannelore Satin Ankle Strap Heels, black.
    Bag,(purse) Merona Beaded Bag ($14.99)
Jewelry, Dainty Graduated Drape Earrings and necklace set ($39.99) or Marquaax Crystal Double Oval Dangling Earrings.
If I were shopping with you I could pick this out in 20 minutes but this is what I think would look pretty.
One thing I know by watching and observing, with accessories, less is more.
Have fun!!! I can’t wait to see what you pick out!!

  82. BooMama, my suggestion is – go to Neiman Marcus’ website http://www.neimanmarcus.com/store/catalog/templates/SC.jhtml?itemId=cat000131&parentId=cat000111&masterId=cat000001 and select “Shop by Occasion.” Being from Dallas, NM is considered the upmost in class and good taste. Granted their models are not human-like and their prices are way beyond my ability, but you might find some good ideas that you could replicate in a more affordable manner.

I read every day and your posts continue to bring a great deal of enjoyment and enlightenment to me. I hope this suggestion will help. I look forward to future postings about the Big Festive Deal Event!

  83. I just want to say I sympathize with your fear of the mall! I feel so clueless whenever I’m there… and salespeople terrify me, so I’d go with my mom, too.

My practically meaningless advice is go comfy on the shoes or you won’t be able to fully enjoy the event, and let your smile be your best accessory. : )

(And pictures for us, pretty please?????)

  84. Ooo! Ooo! Ooo! Something metallic, strappy, sandal-y looking. And remember, the shoes and bag don’t have to match, they just have to GO. Have fun!

  85. I spelled it wrong. http://www.michelled.com is the website for some fab shoes. There are some red, suedish (didn’t read the details), peep-toe heels that would be great. Or, you could also get all sassy and wear some kickin’ high-heel black boots.

  86. I would totally wear red shoes and red beads with this dress, failing that, I’d go with silver shoes and silver accessories. Though it must be stated that it is nigh on impossible to have a bad time wearing red shoes. Mine always make me feel quirky and cute!

  87. I say go with metallic, strappy shoes and bag. That would really dress it up. Sounds fun!

  88. I am so scared seeing myself in color, but feel I am at my best dressed in black, denim or really cute sweats, so I was gonna say cute mules with some metallic sparkles or something. I agree with Karen at 4:01 with something chuncky funky around your neck.

  89. What does chunky jewelry look like? A good Podcast question for you :)

  90. Ok, I completely agree that red is the most “fun” color accessory. I also really love the crystal bead look. Especially the square beads – several layered strands. I will say, however, if you have a fair complexion, they might not pop like they would on olive, tan, or dark skin.

Also, I am a firm believer that great make-up can be one of your best accessories, so to speak. Great smoky eye make-up and a pretty, feminine gloss, and a great bronzer/highlighter will complete your look. I am personally a big Bobbi Brown fan…it’s so feminine & natural looking. Most importantly, have fun! A smile is the best accessory! :)

  91. if you are a gopher in the sense that you’re gonna be popping up and running errands, better skip the spiky heels. I don’t know what kind of shoe it was but I saw the cutest shoe in Belk, it was a black and copper/brown pump. That coppery jewelry is cute too – my daughter has some she bought at Claires that really sets off any black outfit. The chain is black, the little dangles are brown/copper color. All I can think about with the red shoes is the girl in our hometown who was the only one wearing red shoes at a high school function where all the girls had to wear black dresses. Most of the kids in the audience whispered “follow the yellow brick road” every time she appeared. But, we’re out of high school, thank the Lord in heaven! Oh yeah! There is, I hear, a cold front coming in this weekend and tennessee is north-er than us, so you might top that off with a spangly jacket! Have fun and write about if afterward.

  92. Silly Mama of Boo… pick your shoes and let me know what you want for jewelry to complement.

Why buy when you can have it personally designed for you?? =)

  93. ChristyCate says:

EASY!!!! Red Patent Leather Four Inch Heels!!!!! And get Lisa from put-it-on-the-list to design you some red crystal accessories accented with chunky gold…. FABULOUS!!!!

  94. I would wear red cha cha heels and a flower in my upswept hair with pretty little tendrils hanging down. :) Nice dress, and way to go finding something in just one day. That has never happened to me before!

  95. Elizabeth says:

rock on…i love a party. you probably won’t read this because there are like 100 comments already but…rack room shoes sells a fun young hip brand of shoes made by aresoles (you know the really comfy grandma type shoes). Anyway, they sell a peep toe WEDGE heel, and they are SUPER comfortable. The reason that I am recommending a wedge heel is that if you are going to be on your feet a wedge heel will distribute your weight and be much more comfortable. They are called What’s What- look for them at rack room. Anyway as for jewels you can’t go wrong with Penny’s (aka JC Penny’s) accessories they have the best cheap jewels. Good luck, have fun….I love the comment about red patent leather, it is in!

  96. If you show up with no bra, henna tatooed legs and some red animal print shoes and matching belt, they will still be talking about you this time next year in Nashville.

  97. I just can’t comment Boomama….there is just too much to sift through….my head hurts after reading all these….so I am absolutely no help whatsoever….but best of luck to ya!!! :)
