Because Nothing Says Easter Like A Mixtape

A week or so ago I realized that I was listening to certain songs over and over again. I couldn’t figure out why I was gravitating to them, and then I thought, HAVE MERCY, IT’S ALMOST EASTER – and thus solved the repetitive song puzzle.

Let’s just say that the Cross has been a bit of a theme.

So then I decided that I wanted to make an Easter playlist of sorts for my iPod. I mean, I am, after all, a product of the 80’s, and a new iPod playlist is the 21st century equivalent of a mixtape. However, unlike the 80’s, there will not be any Corey Hart songs on this particular mix. Nor will there be any Rick Astley.

(Go ahead and try to get “Never Gonna Give You Up” out of your head right now. Just try. But you can’t, can you? Because that song’s never gonna give you up. Never gonna let you down. Never gonna run around and desert you. Never gonna make you cry. Never gonna say good bye. Never gonna tell a lie. And hurt you.)

(Thank you. Thank you so much.)

So after I finished my playlist, I thought, “Hey, I should post this list on my blog.” And in order to do that, I decided to bring the mixtape into the 21st century by creating an iMix on iTunes because as it turns out, I can share the iMix with the internets. Which is very handy.

However, I want to tell you something very important about my Mad Easter Mix. One of the songs I originally included that iTunes dropped from the mix (the song wasn’t available, apparently) was “Amen” by Larnelle Harris. It also tried to drop “Alive Forever, Amen” by FryDaddy, and I was just sick – SICK – about Travis’ song being left off of the mix (IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE THE LAST SONG! THE FINALE! MY WHOLE MIXTAPE WAS RURNT!), so I began making arrangements for him to travel to each one of your homes and sing it to you in person.

After all, it’s Easter. It was the least I could do.

But then I managed to fix it and “Alive Forever, Amen” is back in the mix – right where it belongs.

Also: I don’t think “Rock of Ages” is typically regarded as an Easter song, but Chris Rice’s arrangement is so beautiful that I had to include it. Just like I had to include “Hard To Handle” on that mixtape of ballads back in 1990. It didn’t fit the theme, but I needed to hear it. Because clearly I am a musical renegade.

So with all that being said, I give you my Easter iMix. And I really do hope you enjoy it. Even if you only listen to 30-second snippets of each song.

Just click here if you’d like to see my list…and feel free to add your own songs in the comments. Maybe we could combine all of our suggestions and make, like, THE BEST MIXTAPE EVER!

Or not.

But regardless: Happy Easter, y’all!

  1. I love me some “Sunglasses at Night” and “Never Gonna Give You Up”! :- )

Thanks for the iMix. Do you like Ray Boltz? I have a need to listen to Watch the Lamb, People Need the Lord, I Pledge Allegiance and The Anchor Holds around Easter.

  2. I’m so happy to see the correct spelling for “rurnt” and also see it used in the proper context! We must be related. Maybe just by southern-ness. Have you seen Carrie Underwood’s version of “How Great Thou Art” on the country video channels? You will cry.

  3. Oh the lost art of the mixed tape. ha!
LOVE the list!!! Great idea to have an Easter mix!

  4. I’ve never heard of Corey Hart or Rick Astley so the only thing that went through my head was “Huh?”.

  5. Ok so now you are on MY list! I’m still singing that song in my head. Thanks a lot. (Never gonna give you up. Never gonna..stop it stop it stop it!)

    I LOVE Arise My Love—Newsong.

  6. Boo Mama, you make me happy every day. Even on really bad days like today. Thank you.

  7. I think iTunes has “rurnt” the real art of the mixtape. Teenagers today don’t know what it is to wait patiently with your girlfriends next to your boombox with the CASSETTE tape ready to have record pushed *just right* in order to capture that perfect song. ah, many a slumber party was spent next to the radio! :)

  8. Ok, not Newsong. But whoever sang it. Obviously my music knowledge is outstanding.

  9. I love me some Larnelle Harris – and Sandi Patti “Via Dolorosa” is the ultimate Easter Song.

I typed that before I checked your iMix. Which just goes to show that she is indeedy a classic.

  10. PS – “He Lives” from Lakewood Live. check it. Also “He Is Not Just A Man” from Fred Hammond

  11. How funny. I just opened up my iTunes this morning and the first thing I had to hear was the Selah/Barlowgirl song. Which I haven’t listened to in ages. But that, and some Nichole Nordeman, were a must-play for me today. Great minds…

  12. Never gonna give you up. Thanks.

You know what I do when someone gets a song stuck in my head? I sing Karma Chameleon to them.

Karma, karma, karma, karma, karma chameleon,
    You come and go,
    You come and go-oh-oh-oh.

    So there.

  13. You should totally add “Beautiful, Scandalous Night” by Sixpence None the Richer and Bebo Norman– it’s AMAZING.

And I love that you have Nichole Nordeman’s “Why”– that’s one of my alltime favorite song.

Other favs– At the Foot of the Cross, Lead me to the Cross, and All for Love

  14. I meant to tell you that I do LOVE your new design. :-)

  15. Scottie says:

    Aahhh…….the mixedtape. Such memories…

I love your list only I didn’t find any Ashley Cleveland songs on it. You have to put some of hers on it, or it just wouldn’t be complete. However, you do have some Selah, so you are forgiven. Just kidding…
    Happy Easter!

  16. Coming out of lurkdom to say Happy Easter. I love your sense of humor and your Easter mixtape ROCKS, sister friend.

If only I was tech savvy enough to load my own MP3…*sigh* I have one, but I just don’t ‘get’ it. Hubby usually finds time to load things for me.

And lastly, Rick Astley was one of my favorites. I probably still have that tape somewhere…

  17. an iMix!?!
ok. you are officially the coolest “stuck-in-the-80s” person i know!

can i have your autograph? ;)

  18. Lakewood Church has two of the most awesome p&w CD’s of all time. Their song “He Lives” on “Cover the Earth” is an amazing Easter song.
    http://www.worshipmusic.com/27822.html
*I just saw that I’m the second to suggest it! That means it’s good!

  19. I can’t believe you didn’t include “Arise My Love.” That is like the ultimate Easter song!!!
Thanks to AI, I can’t stop singing, “And I saw him standing there.”
And I’m talking about the classic “Tiffany” version, not the Beatles!
    Oh the 80’s!

  20. OK, I’m off to make my own i-mix, using many of your songs!
I have to suggest one more – my all-time favorite Easter song:
“High Noon” by Andrew Peterson . . . listen to it, you won’t regret it.
And if you didn’t already know about Andrew Peterson, let me just say now, “You’re Welcome.”

  21. I would have to add “When I survey the wondrous Cross” sung by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. Awesome, Amazing song. It’s on their “O Divine Redeemer” album.

  22. What a great idea! Thanks for the gift AND the idea!

  23. TOTALLY thought Arise, My Love was on there…it was another one that got bumped, apparently. Anyway, it should be back on the list just as soon as iTunes updates the iMix.

I think we can all breathe a little easier now.

  24. I love love the 80’s! The first song that popped in my head is Soldier of Love Donny Osmond. I also love Milli Vanilli still and know they were singing in their hearts and I know I am not the only one!

  25. First you made me mad because you got “Never Gonna Give You Up” into my head.

Then you made me laugh with the whole RURNT thing.

Then you made me cry because the Mix is awesome and several of those songs just made me stop in my tracks. Good stuff.

  26. I haven’t thought of Rick Astley in FOREVER…and now I will be singing that song all day today. ;-)

  27. I agree completely! And wasn’t surprised to love the same songs you do–you know, since we have the same china and all! Hee hee. I think the only thing I’d add is “There is a Fountain” by Selah.

    Have a blessed day, friend!

  28. PS Did you know that in 1984, I saw Corey Hart and Rick Springfield in concert? I have the best picture of Corey Hart on my 100 things (under random, I think) for “Sunglasses at Night.” Silly days–yep.

  29. See now being more of the younger generation that LOVES 80’s music, when you said, “Never say Goodbye”, I immediately started singing the Bon Jovi Song.

  30. Sarah G. says:

“RURNT!” Oh, you have no idea the joy this brought me! There’s some rurnt milk sitting in my sink right now, and I should be cleaning the kitchen but I can’t because “Sunglasses at Night” is in my head and is distracting me from all rational thought.

  31. Oooh….great mix. Though I must say you totally RURNT my Easter groove by getting Rick Astley stuck in my head. We loved him when I was in college! I have a few frydaddy songs on my Easter playlist on my blog. Lovin’ “Alive, Forever, Amen”.

  32. Ah- I remember the day that I first saw Rick Astley on TV and I was like- what do you mean he’s a skinny, white, red-haired boy?!!! Where IS that voice coming from?!! Then I went out and bought his album- on cassette tape- because I was so totally state of the art and HAD to listen on my brand new yellow walkman!

    Am I a child of the 80’s?

Class of ’87- thank you very much!

  33. I have to tell you first, I got my FIRST LETTER from the young man I sponsored from your trip to Uganda! If you want the details pop over to my blog…www.putyourfeetinthewater.blogspot.com

Secondly, My teen daughter has a new boyfriend that keeps making her CD mixes of songs. It is so sweet and brings back so many memories!

  34. “Was It A Morning Like This” by Sandi Patty. Oh. My. Goodness. I love that song.

    Did the grass sing?
    Did the earth rejoice
    To feel you again?
    Over and over like a
    Trumpet underground,
Did the earth seem to pound:
    “He is risen”

    over and over
    in a never ending round
    “He is risen, alleluia, alleluia!”

  35. I don’t know if you can find an online version but our Worship Leader sang “Watch The Lamb” Sunday. I haven’t heard it in years, but when I heard it again I could have just gone home right then. We’d had church already.

  36. I Can Only Imagine by MercyMe has to be #1 on my Easter music list!!! but all of your choices are superb, so I’ll just add this to the beginning and go from there!

  37. “Who Will Call Him King of Kings” by Sandi Patty. Listen to this song, it will get you!

  38. Lovin’ the imix!! Thanks!! (And lovin’ your new design!!)

  39. Christie says:

Just bought your entire mix! Gotta learn how to do that!

  40. I’ve been especially loving Michael W. Smith’s “Come to the Cross.” I mostly love the message: everyone can come to the cross, it doesn’t matter what you’ve done, there’s room at the cross! Amen!

  41. Melissa S. says:

AAAck. Rick Astley is totally stuck. If I start pegging my pants tomorrow, I’m holding you accountable. :-)

My favorite worship song of late is
“Mighty to Save”, by Ruben Morgan and Hillsong Austraila. The audio clip on amazon cuts off the best parts, maybe iTunes’ is better.

  42. “rurnt” got me tickled and now i’m off to check out the list!! Great idea Boo!

  43. What exactly does it say about me that I can pronounce rurnt – correctly? All things considered, though Rick Astley is so very stuck in my head right now, it could be worse…it could have been Boy George!

  44. my dad’s favorite was “morning has broken” by cat stevens, it always makes me think of my dad (passed away in 1999). I heard “Spirit in the Sky” this morning on the way to work and it lifted me up, it’s a good one too.

  45. I am cracking up over the “rurnt”! I once thought my husband had a speech impedement because he says it that way. (He’s from Alabama.)

  46. I am soo, sooooo frustrated with you for the Rick Astley thing that I briefly flirted with the idea of reminding you of songs like like Tom’s Diner (doo, doo, doo, doo) so that you would also have an annoying song in your head. Ok, so maybe briefly flirted isn’t completely accurate.

  47. Sarah M says:

I am making an Easter mix for our church’s pre-service music. My number one song is Steve Fee’s “Happy Day.” It’s tempo is a wonderful contrast to the typical slower, more dramatic Easter songs. Enjoy!

  48. Oh, I am so happy that your mixtape is not rurnt! ;-)

And now I am going to check out the BooMama Easter Mixtape, Copyright 2008.

    Love and hugs,

    Diane

  49. I just had to leave ANOTHER comment as I couldn’t let an Easter week music conversation go without mentioning another great song: Jars of Clay has an amazing rendition of the old hymn “O Come and Mourn with Me” – it points us to our own sin and the reality that each of us sent Jesus to the cross, and that we should mourn, because our Lord was crucified. It’s a great Good Friday song or any other time – I know it helps me reflect on my sin, leading to repentance.

  50. One more comment, one of my very favorite Easter songs is Old Rugged Cross.

  51. I just wanted to say thanks for mentioning Mr. Rick Astley. He was my imaginary boyfriend everytime that video came on tv in the 80’s. I just wanted to run around that same weird outdoor playground he was running around too.

    and the iMix is FAB!

  52. I knew as soon as I read this that Arise My Love had to be numero uno on the list! Perfect list. I love each and every one of those songs!

  53. Love your new blog design!

I had to laugh that you were making an Easter list. I just finished putting my Christmas songs into it’s own playlist.

I also had to laugh at one of the earlier comments about the slumber parties. I so remember sitting with the casette player ready to record at any instant! Now our kids laugh when they see a casette tape! Never mind laughing at my 45’s! Yes, I admit it………I have 45’s still. No place to play them, but hey they are in the pink mod floral container! LOL

  54. Wishing you Easter blessings!
