Hymned Again

While I recognize that the title of this post might lead you to believe that the choir pulled some sort of practical joke at church yesterday morning, that is not the case at all, my friends.

Please do allow me to explain, oh thank you.

About three years ago I gave the husband a CD called “Hymned” by Bart Millard, the lead singer of Mercy Me. And we were crazy about the CD the very first time we listened to it. I loved being able to play Bart’s CD-o-hymns in the car with my little fella – who, if memory serves, was around two years old at the time. And even though the words to “Pass Me Not, O Gentle Savior” were a little complex for his two year-old vocabulary, Alex did some mean bouncing in his car seat every time he’d hear that melody.

Anyhoo.

When I found out a few months ago that there was going to be a follow-up CD called “Hymned Again,” I was tickled to death. If you’ve read here for any length of time you know that THE MUSIC, I ADORE IT, and the old hymns are especially dear to my heart. Maybe it’s because I learned them when I was a child and the lyrics just get richer with time, or maybe it’s because I love singing the words that believers have been singing for generations, or maybe it’s because there’s so much rock-solid doctrine contained within four verses and a chorus. Regardless, I firmly believe that the old hymns are a treasure we need to intentionally share with our families.

So. If you’d like to win one of ten autographed (FANCY!) copies of “Hymned Again,” leave me a comment and tell me your favorite hymn. If you’re not so familiar with hymns, then just tell me your favorite song (in other words: no church-y background required to win).

And if you’d like a little hint of the musical goodness on this CD, you can watch the clip below.

This giveaway will be open until tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 central time, at which point I’ll close the comments and Mr. Random Integer Generator will select our ten winners.

Have fun, y’all!

  1. Oh, my word. I don’t know how to pick just one! I’ll go with “Savior Like a Shepherd Lead Us”. But I feel like I might be hurting the feelings of all the other hymns because I love them so much!

  2. So many good ones, no way to pick one!
    Victory in Jesus
Amazing Grace, my chains are gone is good
    Be Thou My Vision
    It is Well
    Blessed Assurance

  3. It doesn’t get better than “Come Thou Fount” for me.

I’ve been needing some new Jesus music nd I just requested “Hymned” from my library. Thanks!

  4. Favorite hymn: Because He Lives or It Is Well.

Just saw Mercy Me in concert after a ballgame yesterday! They ROCK!!!!!

Glad your back, by the way… :)

  5. My favorite hymn is It Is Well With My Soul

  6. A favorite of mine is “Have thine own way, Lord.” “You are the potter, I am the clay.” I just framed a picture of my son working on the potter’s wheel and included the words to this hymn, in the frame as well. I fit the words to the picture, but when I was working on the project, I realized that this song is so very dear to my heart.

  7. My favorite hymn is “In the Garden”. A close second is “The Old Rugged Cross”. My precious grandmother sang both of these, with a truly beautful voice–I know she is singing in heaven now.

  8. Jessica R says:

I’m gonna have to go with Amazing Grace.

  9. Oh, dear…there’s no way I can choose a favorite hymn, but one I like is “Before the Throne of God Above”:

Before the throne of God above
I have a strong and perfect plea.
A great high Priest whose Name is Love
Who ever lives and pleads for me.
My name is graven on His hands,
My name is written on His heart.
I know that while in Heaven He stands
No tongue can bid me thence depart.

When Satan tempts me to despair
And tells me of the guilt within,
Upward I look and see Him there
Who made an end of all my sin.
    Because the sinless Savior died
My sinful soul is counted free.
For God the just is satisfied
To look on Him and pardon me.

Behold Him there the risen Lamb,
    My perfect spotless righteousness,
    The great unchangeable I AM,
The King of glory and of grace,
One in Himself I cannot die.
My soul is purchased by His blood,
My life is hid with Christ on high,
With Christ my Savior and my God!

  10. “Not What My Hands Have Done” is a longtime favorite!

  11. “It is Well With My Soul”

Thanks for such a fun blog!

  12. Kimberly Barger says:

When We All Get To Heaven

  13. I surrender All

  14. My favorite is “Great is Thy Faithfulness!”

  15. He leadeth Me!
I am a big fan of the hymns myself!

  16. My absolute favorite is “It Is Well With My Soul” for two reasons. First, the Church of Christ group at Texas A&M that meets on campus on Tuesday nights used to sing that song to close out their meeting every week, and it just blew me away every time (no, I’m not CoC, but I love me some harmony!). And second, I found out later the story of how the song was written, and oh my. You’re just not gonna find much stronger faith in God than that.

Song gives me goosebumps every time, between the memories and the story. LOVE it.

  17. I love How Great Thou Art.

Looks like a great CD – thanks for the givaway.

  18. Glory be, I’m commenter #418 if I saw that correctly! Still, I will take my chances with the rest of the crowd because I would seriously like to have that CD!

I love so many hymns…”Sweet Hour of Prayer” is a favorite, and so is “Near the Cross” and “It Is Well With My Soul”.

  19. I am from the south and I loved to sing these at my gandmother’s church, which was even more “deeper” south. Thanks for the chance to win! :)

    Old Rugged Cross

It is well with my Soul

  20. Amazing Grace – can’t get through it without crying!

  21. I love hymns and hate that so many churches (including mine :( no longer sing them as often. I love the newer worship but miss the old hymns. I like Be Thou My Vision, How Great Though Art and Crown Him With Many Crowns as favorites.

  22. One favorite?? I have to pick ONE?!?

  23. Ugh, pick one?

  25. Oh, awesome, I LOVE Hymned!!

Wonderful Grace of Jesus is my favorite hymn. It is Well With My Soul is a close second.

  26. The first song that jumped out was
Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus…might have something to do with the fact that I was listening to an old Amy Grant CD this weekend and it contained her version.
    Come on RNI…pick me….PLEASE

  27. I’d have to say “Redeemed, How I Love To Proclaim It”. There are so many that I love, though.

Angry Words, O Let Them Never (Ha ha, that’s a joke.)

  34. I’ve tried to make “Be Thou My Vision” our family hymn, but the kids have an absolute barf fest each time I try to sing it. They’re really into music like that. Or, I might be a terrible singer. Doesn’t stop me from croonin’ a tune, though, noooo, it sure doesn’t.

  35. oh, yes ma’am, absolutely! sign me up for this give-away!!

And my favorite hymn? “Marvelous Grace” – or, hmm, actually, is it bad to not know the official name of my favorite song? Marvelous grace of our loving Lord, – my favorite because, well, because it *is* marvelous grace, you know?!

  36. When I Survey the Wondrous Cross.

  45. SuperSuz says:

  52. Wow, only picking one is tough…..Come thou fount!

  53. “It is Well with My Soul” is my favorite. Oh Mr. Linky, please pick me.

  54. There are the easy ones: each of my boys has their “own hymn” that I sang them to sleep with when they were little (and even now, somtimes). My oldest knows every verse to “Amazing Grace” and my youngest wants to hear “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing!” year round.

But my most favorite hymn is “It Is Well”. In my very darkest hours, I have sat on my bed weeping and singing “It is well, it is well, with my soul” to myself. For me it sums up my entire Christian walk, no matter what happens on this earth – it is well with my soul.

  55. My favorite is probably a tie between “It is Well with my Soul” and “Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing.”

  60. My absolute fave is Victory in Jesus. I mean, the title just says it all!

  61. I love me some “Amazing Grace”. The only problem is that I can not sing it without tearing up. And really, who wants to be a hot teary mess in the middle of church?

  62. Oh VICTORY IN JESUS! My Savior forever…He sought me and He bought me with His redeeming love…

    Thanks!

  63. Amanda Jessup says:

Victory In Jesus is my absolute favorite, with Because He Lives running a close second. As much as I love new music, traditional songs just warm my heart.

  64. Carrie Furr says:

It is Well With My Soul is one of my favorites, but Doxology holds a special place because it brings back memories of my church growing up. We’d sing that one every Sunday after the offering. Oh the memories…

  65. Kimberly says:

Hmmm, this is a toughy!!! I like “It is well with my Soul” but I can also remember as a small child my mom rocking me to sleep singing “Powr’in the blood” so that is near and dear to my heart as well.

  66. It’s hard for me to pick a favorite, but I definitely love “It Is Well”. I can remember the first time I truly understood those lyrics.
