The very best episodes of “The Office” show us the sweetness behind the characters even when they’re acting like total jerks.
Which is to say: tonight’s episode was gold.
A few highlights for the husband and me:
1. “The tall guy got engaged.”
2. Let’s Get Ethical
3. “Because? I’ll just take up smoking. I’ll do it.”
“I’ll do it with ya. I’ve got a bag of cigars in my purse.”
4. “When I discovered YouTube, I didn’t work for five days.”
5. “I once reported Oscar to the INS.”
6. Jim’s stopwatch
7. Holly-lujah and Mike-raculous
8. “It’s kind of business-romantic.”
9. Michael blocking the copier.
10. Phyllis and Stanley high-fiving.
But above all else, the Dwight / “Battlestar Galactica” / “open soda bottle” stuff made us laugh until we wheezed.
What did y’all think?

Loved the Holly-luja! That was so funny. We actually loved Michael’s expression when they were in the restaurant–just before the commercial break. Holly said, “This isn’t a family,” and Michael just looked at her with such pain and confusion on his face. How does he do that??!! I thought that was priceless.
My favorite line was when Jim said, “It’s exhausting being this vigilant. I’ll probably have to go home early.”
An overall hilarious episode.
And don’t worry- I already searched youtube for the cookie monster video that Michael talked about. Nope, its not real.
The 2-liter soda bottle…sitting on Dwight’s desk. Loved it.
Holly-luya the Office was awesome tonight! There were oh so many hilarious moments …Kelly wanting to take up smoking just to get breaks was made of awesome, as was the whole Battlestar Galactica discussion. Love this show.
Loved Let’s Get Ethical! Classic!
After the Let’s Get Ethical sing-a-long and dance… I knew our Michael had found his soul mate!
I dont always get to watch The Office, but tonight i did and it made my night!
I loved the “i once reported Oscar to the INS” because, well, i am Canadian and that made me laugh….until i cried.
When Michael threw away Holly’s leftovers, I laughed and was sad at the same time. Also, when Holly referred to Michael as her best friend in the office, it made me really happy. How sad is that?
Several snort-worthy moments tonight, but the Golden Schnoz goes to Michael blocking the copier to copy artwork off the wall. Price-wait for it-less.
I have totally used the “I’ll take up smoking, if that’s what it takes to get breaks” argument. Although, I promise it was many years ago when I worked in a telemarketing office!
We don’t have cable tv. So when I saw people on the net discussing The Office, I was clueless…never even heard of it until last week!! (Yes we are strange like that) We got season one delivered from Netflix…so funny! Can’t wait to catch up!!
You forgot to mention when Michael tackled Jim after hearing about Jim and Pam’s engagement. That was hilarious.
I liked this episode better than the season premiere. Especially all the Dwight hilarity.
Hey BooMama!
Even though I have no clue about the Office stuff, I’m ‘commenting’ here as you get way behind on your emails.

She’s got a lovely yardsale this weekend for all you B’ham gals! Lucky you.
I thought the ending was sweet when Holly was up reading from the manual and smiling at Michael…her best friend. And what really scares me is after hearing Holly’s and Michael’s conversation at the Seafood Restaurant…I think my husband and I are Michael and Holly….Oh my. Dwight’s sidelong glance at the camera after he had been gone for 19 minutes cracked me up.
And how is the best way to tell the person you love….”I Told You So”…I liked that, too.
So far I think they are 2-0 this season. I’ve liked both episodes.
Mercy. I laughed at the television set FOR AN HOUR tonight. Isn’t it so nice that when the world is crumbling all around us, we can still hoot and holler?
I think you covered it all.
Did you see the subtle side-look from Angela in the meeting after Dwight talked to Andy about the strong guy, who took over?
Also, the youtube/5 days/ cookie-monster song from Michael was hilarious.
How did I miss the Holly-luyah?
OH! And Dimpledore Calrissian (sp?) was so funny, too!
The Battlestar Galactica made me snort, but the awkwardness of Michael explaining the “punishment undergarments” to Holly while she tried to ignore him made me laugh until I cried. Oh I love Thursday night:-)
My boyfriend and I almost fell off the couch when Jim and Andy were talking about Battlestar Galactica.
“It’s like, some guy named Dumbledore Calrissian, he has to go and take this ring back to Mordor.”
Wow. Hilarious.
I also enjoyed Michael yelling “You are a thief of joy!” to Dwight.
I loved it!! I still can’t believe that it took me till this summer to start watching! I also LOL when Michael said “engaged to be married?” and tackled Jim!
Michael: You know the only thing worse than one HR rep?
Ryan: ….two hr reps.
Michael: ::sigh:: You get me.
I LOVED the Dumbledore Calrissian bit. GENIUS.
We don’t watch the Office. I know. DH doesn’t like it, but I do sometimes watch it when he’s not home.
Anyway, we did catch the little blurb at the end where they’re mowing down on the steak (?). DH and I just looked at each other and cracked up laughing and asking, “what the heck???”. Maybe he’ll want to watch now???
What about the part where Michael totally took Jim down after hearing of Jim’s engagement? I thought that was pretty funny!
Michael tackling Jim…and Pam saying “sorry.”
Oh and the stopwatch. And the Battlestar Galactica. And everything in between…and after. I didn’t stop laughing the entire time!
I loved everything about it. You gotta figure an Office episode about ethics was gonna be good. My absolute favorite was Jim with his stopwatch, talking Battlestar Galactica with Andy. I. Laughed. SO HARD.
I plan on telling everybody that whines in my house today that they are a “thief of joy”.
That and the stopwatch were my faves.
dwight commenting about being cuckolded by a bigger, stronger man… and then Angela’s face. priceless.
Okay. I have never watched The Office before. But I watched last week and this week (mainly because of everyone telling me how good it is, including your posts leading up to this season.) Anyway, I thought it was hilarious! I really liked it and I didn’t think I would. You know how most of the time the hype doesn’t match up with your expections. Anyway, is this the third season? I think it might be, so my question is should I watch Seasons 1 & 2. I’m pretty sure my brother has them on DVD, so I could borrow them. I just wanted to know if you thought it would be worth it? Thanks!
you missed nothing. i think my favorite was the copier blocking bit. when he grabbed the frame from the wall, i lost it. could’ve slid right off my chair.
My favorite was
Michael: How do you tell someone you care about deeply “I told you so?” gently, funny, let it go?
I think funny.
That was hilarious.
I may have been the only one who laughed at this part, but I thought it totally epitomized Michael’s managerial style:
(speaking with Holly at the business-romantic lunch)
“I just don’t want my employees thinking their job security has anything to do with their performance, you know?”
Would I be revealing that I’m a huge dork if I admitted to singing “let’s get ethical..ethical…” this morning??
Loved the episode!
Loved the whole Jim/Dwight/BSG thing and Michael throwing away Holly’s lunch and then telling her they could just split the bill for lunch, but my fave line was “I just don’t want my employees thinking their jobs depend on performance”
You hit them all! Pricesless episode!
My favorite part was when Jim was talking to Andy about Battlestar Galactica while holding the stopwatch. Watching Dwight squirm was hilarious!
Last night’s show was great!
I am just missing out, I think.
I still have never seen this show.
It sounds really funny!
Loved Pam’s little “sorry” after Michael takes Jim down.
I LOVED Michael trying to figure out how to tell someone “I told you so.”
It was a great episode!
“It was about Dumbeldore Calrission…”
YAY-YUS!
AMAZINGLY HILARIOUS!
I peed a little!! It was really, really, really funny!!!
As a Battlestar Galactica fan, I was right there with Dwight fighting the urge to scream “it’s NUTHING like the original!”
And as a Office fan, I love any episode with the Conference Room. Has anything appropriate EVER happened in that God-forsaken room?
Loved, loved, loved the episode. Thought it was one of the top ones.
I miss Pam being there in person.
I thought Ryan’s rant was kind of funny during the ethics session.
It was hilarious when Jim said he was exhausted from keeping track of Dwight’s time.
You can’t forget this one:
“Do we have any more steak sauce?”
“No, we’re out.”
“I think I have some in my van.”
YES! It was the perfect mix of quirky and all-out funny, and followed by a special of SNL made it a wonderful night of comic relief! Much needed!
Pure
Comic
GENUIS
They are a family, people. A family.
I was personally rollin all over the floor when they came in doing, “Let’s get Ethical!”
My kids thought I might need to go to the hospital, seriously!
Battle galactica was close to the funniest thing I have ever seen! lol
The entire episode was great, but the two things that absolutely cracked me up–
1. Jim’s stop watch
2. That soda bottle on Dwight’s desk. I lost my breath I laughed so hard.
Oh.Dear.Lord.
The stopwatch was killing me. and Battle Star Gallactica – the looks they kept giving Dwight. And being exhausted keeping track of Dwight’s time. Oh my.
and how do you tell someone you love “I told you so…”
Your title is my new favorite quote. I plan on overusing it as much as possible. This episode was much funnier than the premiere, I thought.
no other way to say it, but I LOVED It. Jim and the stop watch and the torture of Dwight- comic perfection
I laughed out loud at the “Let’s Get Ethical” headband bit. I just really like Holly, don’t you?
Also loved “How do you tell someone you deeply care about, ‘I told you so'”.
I missed Dwight over the summer.
When Holly asked if anything at work was a waste of time and Stanley said,”Yeah. This meeting.”
Still giggling about the whole episode.
The open soda bottle had my husband and me nearly in tears. How funny!
oh the whole episode had me in tears it was so funny. and what an awesome night thursdays are now because with the office and kath & kim…hilarious!
Oh my, the stopwatch! My husband was watching this episode last night and I actually got pulled into it. Too, too funny! Love your list! Blessings, Amy in OR
the interaction between dwight and jim is by far one of the best parts of the show. when jim left scranton, it was a sad day. so needless to say, my fave part was the stopwatch incident.
I had to catch up from Tivo, so I watched it last night. HIGHlarious. Love the stopwatch. When they’re talking about going to lunch, and Michael says, “You’re not really a client. So I guess, let’s split it?” But “The tall guy got engaged” followed by Michael’s “To be married?” left me nearly in a need for depends.
The people who scheduled the last debate for a Thursday night, just one week after the Office premiere?? Those people are thieves of joy.
I am not one to laugh out loud but I woke up the sleeping hubby because I was laughing so hard with the stopwatch.
“The tall guy got engaged” really cracked us up as well.
It was a great episode.
By the way, great blog…and I love your subtitle. (tens of people every day.) funny!
This was my first episode of The Office. I don’t regret the 1/2 hour I spent laughing in front of the TV either!
I loved the part when the woman (I told ya I’m a newbie…I don’t know names) stood up and announced that she had been sleeping with that guy in exchange for discounts and Outback Steakhouse gift certificiates. wow.
I called my husband and replayed the scene – somehow it wasn’t as funny to him – but I was LMBO!!
It was awesome. My kids know they have to hustle and get in bed so I can watch The Office.
I LOVED that episode!
1. Let’s get ethical… was great!
2. The stopwatch.. priceless! I love the games Jim plays with Dwight at his desk!
3. And I must mention the previous episode, when I screamed seeing Jim propose! It was so unexpected!
I love Thursdays:)
How do you tell someone you care about deeply “I told you so?â€
We played that one about five times.
That and the line that line that Meredith talked about how the Outback gift cards made her feel special – the way girls want to feel. Beautiful.
Oh – but the best line of the night –
“Jackpot.”
I thought Thursday’s episode was good – but I am little concerned that Pam’s face was not seen a time – does this seem suspicious to anyone else? (Sorry I am a bit late in commenting)
Great stuff. Holy Smokes, great stuff.
Oh my gosh. Yes, you are right. The Dwight/Battlestar Gallactica thing killed us too. Saved the episode on the DVR just for that.
Well….right now our local cable company in Austin and a local channel are at war for who should be pocketing our money. The cable company did not blink. The local channel has disappeared from the screen. Guess which show is on that channel? THE OFFICE!!! I was desperately looking to Hulu to see if I could see The Office there. Apparently, a slight delay there in posting it. Drat. Can’t we all just get along and show The Office on Thursday nights???
I’m a little late in the game here, but I had to comment on the funniest office line I’ve heard in a long time: “Its about a guy named Dumbledore Calrissian who’s trying to get the ring back to Mordor”…. the look on Dwight’s face… priceless!
Also, Michael tackling Jim when he found out about the engagement… truly funny stuff!
