– Entertainment Weekly has compiled a list of the 16 best American Idol performances. I’d forgotten how supremely brilliant Melinda Doolittle’s version of “My Funny Valentine” was. I have to say, though, that EW‘s #3 might very well be my #1.
p.s. – WHERE’S MANDISA?
– EW also has a list of 12 songs they think should be banned from AI forever (and for the record, I agree with them on all of them except for number nine).
– Finally, you can imagine my delight this morning when I saw that a 114 year-old woman is giving bacon the credit it deserves.
Amen about the bacon and Entertainment Weekly is not a publication I peruse – obviously I might not have the EW “edge” but definitely felt Melinda Doolittle and any jazz performance is fab, Mandisa is getting the last laugh on AI (an abbreviation I hesitate to use since in my part of the world it means artificial insemination – as in horses or cows – not people).
Watching those videos made me soooooo excited about AI starting back up!!! Oh I love it so much.
And David Cook had me at “billie jean”.
Those were all good memories. My question is, what about Constantine Maroulis and his version of “Bohemian Rhapsody”? I loved that guy!
Thanks for the link!
Jen
I can sleep well tonight; I just read a post about American Idol AND bacon.
This Christmas I’d been hoping that AI had done a holiday-themed show last season. How cool would it be to have THAT on a CD to play all Christmas long?
Your 12 song link is begging to differ.
Though I’m not an AI fan at all, I do like to watch the portion of where the people can’t sing. Though, I admit that so many people have gone out there during the years to get their 15 minutes that it isn’t as entertaining as it used to be. At least in the beginning, probably most of the people really thought that they could sing. Now, they just want to wave back at Mama while they attempt to belt out a tune to the panel of judges.
You go, bacon!
I don’t know if it’s just me but I couldn’t open the second link. It wasn’t working correctly. It’s POSSIBLE that it’s just me. Actually, I’d say it’s most likely me. But, whatever. :)
Like a week until AI starts again … I can hardly breathe!! Eeh!
I really like the Elton John and Phil Collins songs… they bless me.
I just came from the car listening to Mandisa’s “For Good” off The Patriarch’s CD. My Chris and I did the study together and bought it…what a keeper of an album. Chris loves Travis’ song, “You Changed My Name!” He said the ole boy done good!
I have to agree with EW in their pick for #1. When I saw Fantasia sing Summertime live, I was one of those teary eyed people! I wasn’t a huge fan of Fantasia, but that song was beyond amazing! … And Kelly Clarkson’s song was incredible, and her stage performance was really good too!
I can’t wait for AI to come back on next week. The DVR is already warmin’ up. It is the ONLY show I watch regularly because, well, fiery sarcasm, it is my friend, and therefore, Simon tickles me to death. CAN’T WAIT!
LOVE AI. Thanks for the link and the memories. However, they totally overlooked Kat McPhee’s performance of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”. That was THE song/performance that FIRST got me off the couch to vote. That performance remains one of my all-time favorites!
Fun to read, even though I haven’t watched seasons 1, 6, or 7. Also adore Elliott and glad he made so close to the top. But I gotta say–Trenyce doing “Proud Mary” was one of my favorites of all time! So awesome!
I don’t know about banning songs, but I definitely think certain songs should be put on a five season hiatus.
I can’t wait until the weekly AI reviews start again!
boomama,
i absolutely adored mrs. baines! she was the sweetest thing i think i’ve seen in a long time.
reminded me of the older ladies who would want to talk to me after sunday school, on my way to worship service!
thank you for including that clip. that was wonderful!
No Michael Johns? For shame, EW.
Props to a mature woman who knows what is important in life – she is twice my age and we both love bacon – maybe that bodes better for me than the medical establishment says? Not missing AI – seems to be so many people who were former AIers still out there (but where the blazes are so many of the hot ones?) Do you think someone will come up with a deprogramming program for the people from this program? I have had too much coffee and diet coke.
No Sanjaya? Kidding.
Seriously, I’m surprised McPhee’s version of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” didn’t make the list. That song was flawless.
I was shocked to see that the real star of season 1, Tamyra Gray, and her performance of “A House is not a Home” did not make this list!!!
I am so excited for the new season to start!!
Carrie Underwood’s take on “Alone” made me go out and buy the Heart “Greatest Hits” CD! It is still one of my all-time AI favorites! I could listen to her sing it over and over. Now it’s gonna be stuck in my head…
I can’t believe my BFF isn’t on there. I would have picked I Don’t Hurt Anymore!
I’m surprised nothing from the Dolly Parton week this season was on there. I LOVED that night. Not much longer now…I’m getting so excited to have my entire week sucked up again by it! I say you host some sort of American Idol contest-y thing.
Bacon… I think I’m related to that woman. Or I should be.
I still think Melinda was robbed. She totally deserved the honor over Jordan. But what do I know? I was just a music major with an ear for vocal talent, stage personality and the ability to sing different venues.
Yeah, I know. I need to learn how to let things go, especially things that have absolutely no bearing on my life. I’m a work in progress which only goes to prove God’s goodness.
Oh, wow. I’ve been waiting to watch the videos here at home, and I’m so glad I did. Almost all of them made me tear up, because they’re so darned good! Made me remember the good things about AI…instead of all the junk that gets pumped on E! News.
That song by Kelly Clarkson was the first song I ever saw on AI…and it is why I love the show, the premise, the contestants.
Whew! Good stuff!!

That you for letting us post about our favorite singer. Without this site, it would be really difficult to share the latest news about them.

Might I say that my all-time favorite performance is LaKisha’s “This Ain’t a Lovesong” on Bon Jovi night. Of course, my adoration for the Bon Jovi might just be a bit on the too much side.
Oh, and I have every last one of Chris Daughtry’s AI performances on my iPod. He makes me want to hold his hand. :-)
