I spent this past weekend in Atlanta with my sister-in-law Janie. Janie designs and sells fab jewelry travel cases, and when she asked me if I could help her for a couple of days at market, I was more than happy to oblige because 1) I love her and 2) I knew we’d eat a lot of cheese.
Seriously. You have never seen two girls who love cheese more than the two of us. Sometimes we even clap our hands when we talk about it. If we’re looking at a magazine and run across a recipe that contains cheese, we will read the recipe aloud and then talk about how good all that cheese would be. This probably explains why we spent a full fifteen minutes Saturday afternoon speculating on the finer points of a recipe for Potato Lasagna, a dish so decadent that in addition to pasta AND potatoes, it contains at least four different varieties of cheese, hallelujah.
(Have I mentioned to y’all that my husband has decided he doesn’t really like cheese anymore?)
(MY HUSBAND HAS DECIDED THAT HE REALLY DOESN’T LIKE CHEESE ANYMORE.)
(We are considering counseling to help us through this unexpected cheese-related difficulty in our marriage. Please keep us in your prayers.)
Friday night Janie treated me to dinner at a place called One Midtown Kitchen, which was great fun for me because I don’t normally eat at places that require a reservation. I normally eat at places where you sit down briefly and then FIX YOUR OWN PLATE, though if we’re really feeling fancy we’ll eat at a restaurant that provides complimentary chips and salsa before we order enormous plates of tortillas, beans and cheese.
Surprisingly, I don’t really have a problem with that last option.
Anyway, we had a delightful meal at the One Midtown Kitchen, and afterwards we went back to the hotel and put on our pajamas and watched HGTV and ate chocolate. In my opinion the only thing that would have made the night any better is some combination of A) a Dave Barnes show B) SEC basketball and C) a “Project Runway” marathon. Though that would’ve probably sent us into Fun Overload.
And when having fun, it’s important not to overdo it and also to stretch beforehand.
Saturday at market brought lots of great conversation and lots of anticipation about the cheese dip we were planning to eat for supper. By 6:15 the cheese dip was right where we wanted it – DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF US – and by 7:30 we were back in our room, back in our pajamas, and ready to get back to the TV. Janie missed “The Bachelor” when it was on in the earlier in the week, so I watched it again with her. It was actually quite productive because I discovered some subtle “Bachelor” nuances that I missed in my first viewing, and I don’t know when I’ve ever felt more prepared for a season’s second episode. It’s my greatest “Bachelor”-related accomplishment to date. You can imagine my joy.
I drove home yesterday afternoon and got all caught up with my little family and then, once the boy was asleep, watched what is no doubt one of my favorite SNL episodes in recent memory. Mainly because of this.
WHAT A DELIGHT.
Now do have a lovely day.

strange! i, too, have found my enthusiasm for cheese waning in my 30s. it makes my husband very sad.
and SNL on saturday? i thought it was one of the best in a long, long time! i cracked up most of the episode. (then again, i had and always will have a major crush on doogie. and yes, i realize he’d never be in to me. :0)
Oh you make me laugh!
There is nothing wrong with restaurants that serve complimentary chips and salsa – in fact – that is my favorite!
And I’m sure you were delighted when your dogs beat my hogs the other night. Delight was not the word of the night at our house. :-(
You would like France. They really do cheese right.
We had friends who just came from France and they brought us ENORMOUS CHUNKS of Tomme de Savoie, Cantal, and Comte. Oh and a Columbiers. So much for losing any weight anytime soon! I’d invite you over to share but you might accept ;)
You really DO like the cheese-y, don’t you, video included!?
Godspeed on the cheese counseling and praying he’ll come around soon.
Oh, I love the Doogster…I do! Too funny!
I’m thinking of starting a 24 hour prayer chain of intercession for your husband. After all, if Jesus is the bread and the wine, well DUH, he must like cheese.
The recipe? for the Potato Lasagna? Oh, you do tease with all your cheesy-ish-ness.
Oh, how I love the JJ! I got one for a friend of mine for graduation and it (according to her) continues to her favorite gift she has EVER received. Glad ya’ll had a great cheese-filled weekend!
And the Doogie video – what can I say…comedic perfection.
Loved the video!!! HAHAHA!
Now…where’s that recipe? Potatoes and cheese and pasta all in one dish????
Thank you for the giggle!
The potato lasagna recipe …. oh, no teasing!!
And, last year my husband decided he’d get all metro and go vegetarian for a few weeks. We’re still recovering from that one. :-P
Oh wait, are you talking about Grandma Paula’s potato lasagna recipe?
Oh dear,goodness!!!
And,yes, I require my son to call Paula Deen Grandma. It allows me to consume many more carbs and butter sticks each day to think I’m actually related to her and it’s in my genetics. Poor child.
The tear rolling down his cheek at the end of the song? Oh.my.word. Perfect. I don’t usually watch SNL but I love NPH so I recorded it. He was every bit as fabulous as I thought he would be.
I still haven’t made that cream cheese/rotel/sausage recipe you posted a while back. I really need to pull that out but I’m scared I’ll eat the whole dish by myself. Seriously.
My husband (and first-born son) are both lactose intolerant.
OH THE TRIALS.
(Mine.)
Glad to hear you had such a fun weekend! I feel your pain – my husband is not such a huge fan of the cheese, either. And my 8 year old son – can’t stand it. It’s enough to seriously make me question whether we’re victims of a “switched at birth” scenario….I just don’t know how a child I bore could actually NOT like cheese?!
You do love you some Neil Patrick Harris, don’t cha? Too funny :)
Um, hello! Lasagna recipe linkage, please! =)
Ummmm….why is the video funny? What music is it? I don’t get the joke….please explain!
Here’s the potato lasagna recipe:

But I was wrong. It only has TWO kinds of cheese. However, it also has whipping cream, sour cream, and almost two sticks of butter, so clearly I overestimated the number of cheeses because I was so excited about all the dairy.
i think we share the love of cheese. just left the grocery store with about 15 items…6 of which were cheese.
good luck finding a “dairy” qualified counselor!
We don’t usually stay up for SNL, but we happened to catch that Doogie theme bit. SO FUNNY!
oh such a great snl! I just about died laughing at the one with the air traffic controllers and their nails!
my hubs doesn’t like cheez-its…it’s so un-American of him.
Oh Doogie Howser, be still my heart. Is it weird that I got a small lump in my throat during this skit when we watched it on Saturday?
A Doogie moment!
And cheese.
Boo, you just make the world a better place!
About half-way through church yesterday, I whispered to my husband, “Let’s go out for lunch after church.” He asked where I wanted to go and I said, “Somewhere with chips and cheese dip.” And whadda-ya-know? Soon we were sitting at a table with chips, cheese dip and salsa which was followed by a plate of –yep — tortillas, rice and beans.
Yummmmmmm!
By the way, I love your sister-in-law’s products! I’m lucky to live in Memphis where you can get them just about everywhere! :)
Okay, I’m writing this comment AFTER my trip to the kitchen for a cheese snack, thank you very much! You should be careful with what you peddle around this blog, young lady, because so far I’ve eaten almost everything you’ve written about!!
I’m with Kate (previous comment) on this one. I don’t get the video either. hmmmmmmm
Hugs,
Marie
I wish I had a sister to obsess about cheese with. As it is, people just sit around and watch me obsess by myself.
At least they care enough to give me cheese for Christmas. I received three different gifts of cheese. And I don’t even have to share it if I don’t want to.
I’d share with YOU in a heart beat (not that I’m hitting on you; my wife knows about us).
I WILL be lifting you up during this cheese crisis in your marriage. I am SO sorry; who knew that fromage could cause friction?
My hubby and I love some NPH and LOVED that sketch!
Ahahahaha I love that you love cheese. And that you had to emphasis IN CAPS about your predicament with the hubs. You will be in my prayers! heeee!
OK…My girls and I didn’t get the video either. However, after reading all your comments for clues, I get the feeling it has something to do with Doogie Howser.
Have you ever noticed just how much Doogie and Steven Curtis Chapman look alike?
Not that that has anything to do with the video which we didn’t understand but which was OBVIOUSLY funny since the audience laughed from the get-go. The audience can’t be wrong…
You are such a riot! Thank you :)
We just in from Market last night. Wish I had known you were there. I would have come by to say hi. Sorry I missed you. jl
Laughed out loud on the Doogie Howser clip. Ahhh… those were the days.
Not like Cheese???There is something wrong..I wish I didn’t like cheese!
-sandy toe
That SNL clip was crazy funny.
Neil Patrick Harris is awesome on How I Met Your Mother. If y’all aren’t watching it, I highly recommend it.
As I am about to sit down and watch episode two of the Bachelor I am dying to know what nuances I would have picked up on had I watched episode one a second time. Please share!
Oh my gosh. My best friend works during SNL, and he watches it later on Hulu.com, which breaks the show up into segments. They DID NOT HAVE THE DIGITAL SHORT. I wouldn’t shut up about how he needed to watch it until he finally found it on facebook, whereupon he said, “That was bizarre.” Um, I think he meant “bizarrely AWESOME.” But I could just be speculating.
I might love you because you love cheese. Just saying. Cheese is the amazing, cheese and carbs might be the ultimate. Unless you add bacon, then you might tip it over the edge.
I don’t watch SNL or the Bachelor. I know, I’m a terrible human being :) So I can’t comment on those.
My husband doesn’t like cheese OR ice cream or desserts with nuts in them which means….MORE FOR ME!!!
A husband who doesn’t like cheese? They make those?
Yay! for One Midtown Kitchen! We live near it here in Atlanta but I’ve only been there twice. I’m usually carrying my own tray when we eat out. :o)
For this post and a hundred other reasons, both large and small, you are the absolute cutest. “Sometimes we even clap our hands when we talk about it,” will have me giggling for days. DAYS, I TELL YOU.
Oh, and the Doogie theme? Love love love.
Oh My Goodness that was too funny! I’m gonna be laughin’ about this all day. Can I just tell you I LOVED Doogie Howser. I wished he could be my doctor – or play my doctor on TV.
That weekend with your sis-in-law sounds lovely. We need more of them in our lives, huh?
At this juncture I feel compelled to ask of NPH fans the world over, are you familiar with Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog?
Pure Comedic Gold.
Okay, I’m guessing that none of the comment makers above will come back to read this, but the music from the clip was the theme song from Doogie Howser, MD. LONG before NPH was on How I Met Your Mother he played a child prodigy doctor.
And I LOVED SNL last week! We occasionally stay up for the political sketches, but we stayed up for a whole hour of SNL fun! We loved Doogie and are also Taylor Swift fans!
Ooh, Cheesy Mama. I’m betting you have a recipe for that excellent white salsa y queso dip they serve at the Mexican restaurants. If so, PLEASE for the love of all that is good and cheesy, throw it our way.
Also, does your love reach all the way to cream cheese? If it does, I have a cream cheese dessert recipe to throw your way. Lemme know!
Had to put that video up on my Facebook page…hilarious!! Thanks for a good laugh this morning.
so sad b/c I was just catching up, and the video is no longer available! big bummer.
I haven’t watched SNL in ages, but I stayed up late for a date with Doogie!
