1) Yesterday I got an email from a reader named Staci (hey, Staci!) who wanted to know if she could subscribe to my posts via email. And since I’ve been blogging for three whole years now, it makes perfect sense that my first reaction to Staci’s request was “Oh, no – I don’t think my blog has that feature.”
Y’all better move out of the way or I’m gonna run this blog right off the road. I AM NOT QUALIFIED TO BE OPERATING THIS VEHICLE.
Anyway, I did some digging around in Feedburner (the only reason I know about Feedburner is because my previous blog host moved all my feeds there, but since I’m really not sure how the whole “feeds” thing works I can’t talk about them for too long or my head will explode). Anyway, after clicking around a bit, I discovered that yes! I do have the email subscription feature! but it had never been activated!
So I activated it and copied and pasted the code into my sidebar and really, I’ve never felt more fancy.
2) Have any of y’all seen “Slumdog Millionaire”?
I saw it last weekend and thought it was really good. But the more I’ve thought about it this week, the more I think it changed my life a little bit.
What did y’all think?
3) A couple of you (and by “a couple,” I literally mean “two”) have emailed to ask why I didn’t do an American Idol recap this past week. There are a couple of reasons (and by “a couple,” I literally mean “two”).
The first reason is that I was tired.
The second reason is that, like so many businesses that are suffering right now, our sweet friends at Culture11 had to suspend operations last week. The news was unexpected and obviously very sad for all the people who worked there – not to mention all the faithful Culture11 readers.
I’m hoping to resume the AI recaps next week, though I realize that between The Bachelor, American Idol and The Office I may have a little too much television on my bloggy plate right now. Which is really no different than my real-life plate.
My real-life plate also contains a good bit of bacon.

I’d like some of the bacon please – always a favorite here. You cannot DO too much television unless it is simply something you don’t want to do – ’cause we love your “take” on the various programs and I truly feel you are the one who could have gotten to the bottom of WHY did they kick off that charming Osmond boy and never show it!? Thank you very much – is the dog showing signs of spiritual fruit?
Oh, you always make me smile :). And your post about the prayers for your dog’s salvation…made my twelve year old son smile also!!
Hey I’m Meg. I’m a lurker to your blog, rather then someone who comments. I’ve been following you for a couple months. I really enjoy your blogs. (Especially Thursday nights, I wonder what will make it into those “Office” blogs) Please keep blogging on American Idol. I enjoy your take on it. (I would have SO enjoyed your take this week) Anyway, I do really like your blog. The stories, the good Southern recipes and all the funny things. (: Hope you have a good day. (:
Thanks for risking a cranial explosion to hook us up with the e-mail subscription option. I am too tech-dumb to have even asked for it, but I signed up lickety-split.
I was wondering about the Culture 11 posts…I have been checking! Oh, PLEASE, PLEASE do Idol recaps! I love yours so very much!!!
i LOVED slumdog millionaire ( i think i twittered you twice about it, sorry!) it was a movie that i knew i liked when i watched it, but after we left and i reflected on it realized what a huge impact it had…. plus pete is heading to india in april with compassion so that got us really excited about it can’t wait to see how his trip changes us!
You know what? I loved this…it was such a great picture!!
“Y’all better move out of the way or I’m gonna run this blog right off the road. I AM NOT QUALIFIED TO BE OPERATING THIS VEHICLE.”
Prayin’ for you, friend! Have a wonderful weekend and know that you are in my thoughts and prayers.
Holly
I kept checking for the Idol recap and wondered where it was. You should know how much you add to our enjoyment of each episode of anything!
I love you BooMama. You are real, and very funny!
I loved Slumdog Millionaire, too. It made the reality of global poverty real for some of my friends who’ve never lived in places where people suffer so much, but it managed to do it without exploitating the poor or romanticizing their lives. It just showed life in all its reality; that no matter the circumstances, there’s great joy and incredible pain.
The Bollywood dance sequence at the end was also A#1 fantastic.
You give such hope to techno dinosaurs like me!
We watched Slumdog millionaire and my hubs is from Mumbai, so the sights and sounds were like a big nostalgia factor for him. I grew up in India although not Mumbai and there were so many things we could identify with. That being said, some of it I felt was over the top, but it is a movie not real life. And there was absolutely no chemistry between the guy and girl.
Dear Boomama,
Since you seem to be having a good FAQ blogging day AND because you mentioned bacon, I was wondering if…in Dear Abby fashion…you could help me with this little problem.
This morning, I was craving bacon. I don’t normally eat bacon, but had some and cooked it. All the while forgetting that I have weekend company coming tonight.
So…my house still smells like the Shoney’s Breakfast Bar and they will be here in about 2 hours.
Do you have any helpful hints like Heloise in getting the bacon smell out of your house fast…I mean, like NOW?!?
Signed,
Grease is the Word in Tennessee
:)
I loved Slumdog Millionaire, though I couldn’t exactly say it changed my life. I thought the story was excellent, intriguing, and it was basically a clean movie showing a wide array of lifestyles. I LOVED the Bollywood dance theme at the end…
YES!! Slumdog Millionaire was wonderful. I left the movie a few weeks ago thinking, “Wow, that was a really good movie.” But the more I have thought about it sense, I just love it more and more for reasons I can’t quite explain.
I’d love to hear more about what you thought of it. :)
BooMama:
On the subject of bacon…….it seems the Florida State Fair [which just opened this week] according to all the local news media has a new fair food…..chocolate covered BACON!
And of course, I thought immediately of YOU!
Have a great weekend…..go BACON!
Loved Slumdog Millionaire! But I agree with you that I loved it more a week later than I did when I walked out of the theater. It haunts me still. It was probably the most unique story telling technique I have ever watched. I very much appreciate the redemptive message of walking through difficulty only to triumph on the other side.
So, I’ve been meaning to ask, what brand of bacon do you prefer?
At 32, I am a recovering “afraid-of-frying-bacon-er” (long story involving a fold up camp stove, bacon for 30 girl scouts, and 9 year old me) so I haven’t purchased bacon until recently. And the last bacon I purchased, I wasn’t so proud of, being from one of the states in its name.
Any suggestions to aid in my recovery efforts would be greatly appreciated.
If it weren’t for the email subscription option on my blog, my entire family (or the vast majority of them) would NEVER read my blog, despite interest, good intentions, etc. They just don’t “do” blogs and, I think, some are secretly scared of ’em. ;) Email, though? They can do that. Congrats for braving the techy stuff of Feedburner!
BooMama,
I am so glad you and so many people in the States are watching Slumdog. I am currently living/serving in India right now, and I went to see it just a few weeks ago with “co-workers.” It is amazing how true-to-life the movie is. Yes, the story is fictional (and maybe a little over the top), but the portrayal of life in India is an all-too real glimpse of what it is like for millions here. The slums, the beggars, the family bonds, the diversity of class. The movie is absolutely a theatrical masterpiece, but more than that India shines. India is the star of the movie, and it makes me proud and more heartbroken for this place that I love so much. Thanks for giving it a shout-out.
I saw Slumdog Millionaire on Tuesday night. I thought it was wonderful! One of the best movies I’ve seen in a long time.
I have to say that I love all your references to bacon. I consider myself to be a southern gal after 14 years in Nashvegas. I knew I had crossed the line when I started saving bacon grease in a jar to use later. Just thinking about it makes my mouth water for some cornbread cooked in my bacon grease coated iron skillet!
You are one crazy driver! And I’m happy to be along for the ride.
haven’t seen slumdog millionaire yet, but something must be up with it what with all the oscar buzz I’m hearing about it.
wish I could’ve gone to Going Beyond tonight and tomorrow morning! right here in my neck of the woods and I can’t go to it.
but I did get to do the cha cha and the tootsie roll with a bunch of K-5th graders tonight at the elementary school sock hop… my little man was sportin the fonzie look and little sister was working her high pony tail and pink poodle skirt.
TOO CUTE.
oh the fun you have ahead of you in just a few short years!
can’t wait to read your recap of Priscilla’s teaching over at AllAccess! these times away alone with Him are really good.
Now you shall know the joy of getting an email that says “So and so has unsubscribed from BooMama.” And you can wonder, why? what? what did I say??
Hi-I haven’t been reading your blog for too long so perhaps you’ve written volumes on the topic but what is up with group night on AI? We only saw it last night as we are always a little or alot behind US programming but it was truly painful. Plus we were 20 minutes into the show before we heard any singing. Okay, I’ll stop now.
I loved Slumdog Millionaire. Bits of it were very hard to watch but I also thought it was one of the best films I’ve seen in awhile.
Have a nice weekend…Joyce
I loved Slumdog Millionaire, too. My family is from India – I am first generation American – so it had special significance to me. The abuse of the street children was very real and probably worse than was shown. Very sad. But the movie overall was so hopeful.
And the dance sequence at the end – LOVED. IT.
Long time reader. First time commenter.
OK- I totally agree with you on the feed system. I’m trying to figure it out myself!
And I loved your AI recaps on Culture 11 (so sad for them- they need a hug). You need to keep a little of that here! And I purposefully haven’t read your office post, yet, because I haven’t seen it. The DVR is calling my name, but I hear it was a killer!
Saw Slumdog last night and it captivated my heart. It was an excellent movie and an eye opening look at the harsh reality that so many in the world deal with. As long as this goes on in our world and as long as I follow Jesus, the work is not done!
Loved Slumdog – great movie (we don’t get out much so it takes a lot for me to be impressed, but this one impressed me!)
I hope you don’t give up your recaps (especially The Office). I love reading them and getting to enjoy my favorite parts again.
I count on you for The Office and Shannon for Lost recaps.
Keep up the good work – when is the next podcast?
Did wonder about the Idol recap. I had forwarded the blog to some of Rose’s colleagues at P.S. They missed one of the nights, and rather than give my summation, I just sent yours. Much easier.
Haven’t seen Slumdog, but did watch VICKY CHRISTINA BARCELONA last night. Very Woody Allen. Worth the price of the Blockbuster rental though.
Must see S.M. have heard really good things about it.
Looking forward to your Idol recap!!! Love your blog!
I LOVED Slumdog Millionaire! I saw it by myself one afternoon and then drug my husband back to see it that night – AFTER I went and bought the sound track.
Loved it – and YOU! :)
Thanks so much for the e-mail blog subscription thingy! I’m glad you did som checking and figured it out! Love the blog, it’s a daily addiction! Thanks so much for being “you”. Yes, I know I don’t know you..but I feel we would be instant kindred bossom friends over some type of cheese product! :)
I saw the movie yesterday–I don’t get out much :):):) And while it was hard to watch during most of it, it did make quite an impact on me. I’m a mom so there were parts that were excruciating to watch, weren’t there? To imagine those kids, ALL OF THOSE KIDS without help, food, shelter. It broke my heart. I kept being impressed that the kid/man never started lying, cheating like his brother. I felt like there was such injustice–like in our world–and it made me very thankful to have what we have here…so yes, great movie. Disturbing and real, scary real.
I’m a lurker on your blog, which I absolutely love! Please know that your Idol recaps are missed when they’re not up…
Sophie,
I have been reading your blog for months now, and absolutely love it! I read all your archives, too, and laughed out loud so many times! Thanks for getting the feed set up for e-mail. That will make keeping up with BooMama even easier.
By the way, last week when you gave a shout out for Dave Barnes, I clicked over and checked out his music for the first time. By the time I’d heard the first 20 measures of his song Loving You, Loving Me, I knew I was in love with his sound! I downloaded the EP as well as a couple of his other songs. I’ve burned a CD for a romance-y friend for a Valentine’s Day gift, too. Thanks so much for the recommendation!
I always feel super spiffy when I learn how to do a new thing with my blog. Congratulations! [smile]
And I enjoyed Slumdog Millionaire too.
~Luke
I never eat bacon now without thinking of you, BooMama!
( and yes, I love it, too! Just never
bold enough to admit it like you! :-)
We love your TV recaps!
BooMama, Looking forward to seeing SM with hubby this weekend. So sad to hear about the end of your AI recaps on Culture11; I’ll hope to see bits spill out here. And speaking of t.v. series, do you have any insider information on NBC’s new series “Kings”? I’ve only heard bits and pieces, but you have to wonder what’s up when a secular network wants to give it’s version of David and Goliath. Hmmm…
p.s. I just partook of some lovely Black Label bacon; my favorite!
Slumdog millionare is the best movie I have seen in a while. Did you know that the kid Jamal and the kid Lakita are really from the slums of india, and now from the movie they are being allowed to attened school and when they finish they will have money from the movie
About AI. I’m just sayin’ right now that my money’s on Danny. Or the dude with the wild black hair. But, I could be completely wrong.
