Linky Interwebby Awesomeness 03.09.09

– A couple of days ago I ran across a post on Sweet Juniper! that continues to haunt me even now. On the surface this beautifully written post is about Detroit’s abandoned public school buildings, but on a deeper level it’s about so much more. It speaks volumes about a whole host of social and educational issues, and it absolutely broke my heart. (link via Amalah)

– Yesterday, during a bout of clickiness, I found “Detroit Reliquary” on time.com. The photographs are stunning.

– In completely unrelated news, Melissa from The Bachelor is about to kick up her heels. Literally.

  1. I was sooooo excited about hearing that Melissa was going to be on DWTS… How awesome!!!! She’ll show Jason what he’s missing, haha!!! Happy Monday!!!

  2. Thanks for the Detroit stuff. It’s like watching Rome decay in real time. I read somewhere last week that the average price for home sales in the city was $7K last year. 7,000 dollars.

  3. So PUMPED about Melissa on DWTS!!!! I actually asked her to friend me on Facebook the other day but have had no reply. I think I am obsessed (a little) but she is just so darn cute!

  4. I am not sure how I feel about Melissa being on DWTS. She was a Dallas Cowboy’s cheerleader for years. Isn’t being a great dancer already a pre-requisite for that?? Anyway, it will be interesting to see how it goes.

  5. Laura practically took the words out of my mouth; I feel sick in the pit of my stomach, except I think it’s my heart that’s sick. How can we be so broken that we just turn our backs and walk away from something so important? I think I’d like to just pack up and go move in with Pioneer Woman. Sounds like she has a big enough spread to accommodate a lot of us. Reading her blog and Sweet Juniper’s, you’d think they were a whole world apart, not just a few states.

  6. This news may be the reason I start to watch DWTS. I’ve never watched before, but since I adore Melissa… I’ll have to set my DVR. And Holly, too. That’ll show Hef alright! He’d break a hip if he tried to keep up with her! Thanks, BooMama!

  7. Please tell me you are going to do a play by play for DWTS! You are my DVR since I am too cheap to get one and I can never enjoy my shows before 8pm because my kids are tugging on my legs and wanting me to read books or something.
ABC is really smart to bring the Bach ratings over to DWTS. Who says they don’t care about people?! I just hope that if Melissa wins they don’t change their mind and take the trophy away from her.

  8. I would have NEVER known of Melissa on DWTS if it weren’t for your blog! I don’t usually watch DWTS (except for Kristi Yamaguchi). Now I have to race home and tivo it before I go to a hockey game.

  9. I am SUPER thrilled for Melissa! I am definitely watching tonight and casting my vote for her! YEAH TEAM MELISSA!

  10. Don’t have the heart to click to Juniper yet but got a good chuckle (which I needed) from the People mag commenter wondering if Jason would cry while he watched DWTS!

  11. Oh, that Sweet Juniper post broke my heart, as did the photos in the article he linked. It is horrible to think of all the children who won’t get to read those books or use those supplies and it’s all just sitting there rotting.

  12. I followed your link earlier today and have been sick to my stomach ever since thinking of all that wastefulness and corruption. Those pictures are horrifying to me. I don’t understand why anyone isn’t doing anything about this?! Made me start to think that I should be looking around my own city a little closer and see what I am missing here that I could maybe in some small way help with. Unbelievable.

  13. I have lived almost my entire life in the Metro Detroit area, and this is but one sad story in whole library of heartbreak.

Your commenter above asks “how can we just turn our backs and walk away from something this important?” Well, plenty have turned their backs, but plenty have not. The better question would be how can you fix something that is completely rotten from within?

You can tear down the dead decaying buildings, build beautiful new sports arenas and casinos and waterfront condos, but when the elected leadership continues to be so corrupt, what then?
The mayors and city councils of Detroit have been and continue to be a national travesty.A joke, really.

Another big problem downtown is the closing of chain grocery stores. The residents have no access to fresh food. They buy their goods from IGA’s that jack up the prices, or from party stores, gas stations and drug stores.

Until the city can elect leadership that will stop the systematic raping and exploitation of the city and it’s residents, there is only so much that we in the suburbs can do.

There is a mayoral race coming up to replace the disaster that was Kwame Kilpatrick. It would appear that there are several men running that have a heart to help, not harm the city. Please pray for God’s mercy and intervention.

Wow, this is heavy. I think the only other times I have commented have been on “The Office” recaps and Mama and the Fish Camp! Which is the funniest post I have EVER read.
