In the midst of all the Shred-type unpleasantness in my neck of the woods, I thought I would take a few minutes to focus on some products that I’ve recently tried and loved. As an added bonus, these things do not cause my muscles to spasm uncontrollably, so basically, you know, SCORE.
And I apologize in advance for another post that’s numbered. But this is a busy week, which means that numbering is my friend.
I do hope you understand.
1. So a couple of weeks ago when I was catching up on “The Hills” (I wish I could take back the first part of this sentence, but I cannot because it is true. Please don’t judge me.), I kept seeing commercials for a certain type of mascara. And since I am forever on a quest for the best inexpensive mascara in the universe, I knew that I had to try the new mascara when it was time to restock the make-up bag.
Last week I bought the mascara, which is called Cover Girl Exact Eyelights. I adore it. The coverage is great, it doesn’t clump, and it stays on all day long. Plus, I think the fact that it’s tinted (to compliment your eye color) as opposed to a straight-on Joan Jett black (as far as I know, Joan Jett has never had a signature mascara color, but I’m trying to be descriptive, you understand) makes it great for spring and summer.
Don’t ask me why I feel that mascara should be less heavy in the spring and summer. I have no idea, honestly. It’s just a gut cosmetic-related feeling.
By the way and FYI: Exact Eyelights is on sale right now at The CVS.
2. Here’s another new product that I adore: L’Oreal Infallible lip gloss in Petal. I got it as part of a Buy One, Get One Free deal at The Walgreens, and it’s my new favorite thing in the world. It doesn’t cake or flake off, and it doesn’t taste weird, either (I have Definite Issues when lip products come anywhere close to having a flavor).
3. I am a girl who loves me some slippers. Sister gave me a pair of UGGs about four years ago, and I have worn them within an inch of their ever-livin’ life. But in the summertime, the UGGs are too warm for me, so I end up wearing flipflops around the house and treating them like make-believe house shoes. However, it’s just not the same. Flipflops don’t have any of the smushy goodness of the UGGs.
Well.
This past weekend my friend Melanie gave me a pair of these slippers, and OH SWEET MERCY AT THE SUMMERTIME COMFORT. You get the coziness of the UGG with the functionality of the flipflop. They are a kicky delight.
4. And speaking of the flipflop – I am currently on a quest for the perfect black flipflop. I prefer a wedge and/or platform, and I was a huge fan of the SODA black flipflop until the only place I could find them was on websites that look like they were created in MS-DOS back in 1992.
So do any of y’all have any flipflop suggestions? I definitely don’t want to spend a bunch of money, but you should probably know that I like a little height on my flipflop heel because I find that when I wear a two-inch (or more) flipflop heel to the pool I am often mistaken for Heidi Klum.
That last sentence is totally true except for the fact that I have never been mistaken for Heidi Klum in my whole life ever.
But anyway, a nice heel on my flipflop makes me feel a little sassier, and if I’m going to have to sit at a pool all day long with other mamas who are cute and, you know, FIT, then I’ll take my sassy where I can find it, thankyouverymuch. Because I’ll tell you right now that the poolside sassiness is not going to come from anywhere other than my feet.
Unless you count my mascara and my lip gloss. And maybe if I wear my new slippers.
The end.

you wrote about 3 of my favoritest things in the whole world: mascara (I’m still using the pink and green bottle…so glad to have a good recommendation of something else!), lipgloss (but i’m a sucker for flavor, love some Burt’s Bees), and flip flops.
poolside sassiness is nonnegotiable. if i won’t get fit, then i’ll just be sassy and hope nobody notices.
funny, funny, funny! thanks for the giggles!
http://www.zappos.com/search/reef%20butter
Reef Butter Flip Flops. You can’t go wrong. The $42 might seem steep but you will wear them many summers. At least a couple. For sure one.
Okay, I wondered about the mascara. Any mascara that says “tinted” makes me think of the icky blue stuff from the 80’s. Say it ain’t so, B-Mama. Say it ain’t so. It frightens me and makes me tremble just a little.
Secondly, the fuzzy flip flops scare me. I’m sorry. I guess that for some reason, folks have confused them with acceptable footwear OUTSIDE of the home and they are obviously not outdoor footwear. So, my head shakes with visions of them walking through the grocery aisles. But, as long as you promise them to be at home only, its all good.
Finally, it does not have a heel, but it is a darned FINE! flip flop. I admit that I’m only a new flip flop convert. These past few years I’ve developed quite a love for my Clark’s flip flops. Oh look, I’ve looked my post up just for you!
http://baileysleaf.blogspot.com/2009/04/lovin-on-clarks.html
They have no heel, but they have an arch and are just divine to wear. You don’t really need that ole heel anyhow, right? The “Shred” has shredded your legs anyhow, right?! :)
Teva flip flops. They’re usually around $20 at Rack Room, sporting goods stores, and places like that. It’s worth it because they will last for years.
The Hills is my secret shame as well. We should start a support/confession group for people who can recognize an emotionally abusive relationship but can’t turn away from the reality show about it. Or something.
Poolside in AL is a must! In Colorado, it’s a happenstance. Man, I do miss having a pool–even though the water was 95 degrees in East Texas by May and lasting through October.
I wish I loved mascara. I don’t. It’s because of contacts and some bad situations–like the cornbread dressing, you understand.
Are there any contact wearers out there with mascara that doesn’t bother your eyes?
And when I have some extra dollars, I am so gonna buy some Petal lip gloss!!
I don’t know if I have ever told you this before but, I have to tell you now.
I love you.
I love your humor, honesty and the joy you have for life. Oh, and how you love Jesus, too! Just had to share.
Carry on, now.
Just say yes to Reef flip flops! I love them. They are pricey for flip flops but do the girl math…they last more than one season…they have arch support…and they are amazingly comfortable….all of that equals a must have in my book!
loving the list. i saw that same commcerial and was curious about the mascara.. i may check it out now!
i don’t know what your shoe size is but i found multiple, wonderful pairs of flip-flops at, of all places, lane bryant last year. i actually had to go down a size from usual. but they are fancy, pretty, wedgie and stylish.
I love me some flip flops too!
Take a look at these:

http://www.zappos.com/n/p/p/7389753/c/137167.html
So cute!!
Please update when you find these sassy black flip-flops. I too am in need of the snazzy black wedge flip-flops. To wear to church. Because I’m classy like that.
Have you tried the fit flop? Oh. Leg work out and cute and wedgy.
I love Volatile flip flops…a little pricey but oh so cute and really comfy. You won’t be able to stop at one pair!
Okay. I just finished a marathon drooling session over at Crocs.com. They may have what you’re looking for. And get this. There is a sale in honor of mother’s day on a certain flip flop type looking shoe. And pssssst, recently I bought the 3 inch wedge from Crocs. And I haven’t fallen down. Not once. In fact, I look rather sassy.
I’m visiting from Amber’s blog. (I’m her aunt.)
While I am not particularly a fan of “flip-flops” for myself, I do shop for shoes online occasionaly, and I saw that Target has a line of wedge or platform flip-flops at VERY reasonable prices. How’s $10 to $15 sound?
I do enjoy your blog, by the way.
Reef…you will love them. I have them in brown leather and black leather. (bought them at Dillard’s) Love them! They will last you for several years.
You forgot your mouth. I’m pretty sure there’d be a fair amount of poolside sassiness coming from your mouth. ;)
Okay, I’m embarassed to admit this after looking at everyone else’s suggestions of some Seriously Stylin’ flip-flops, but I got my simple, black, ever-so-subtly heeled flip-flops at the Wal-Mart(s).
$2.
And they make my feet look skinny.
And I’m a size NINE.
AT. LEAST.
$2.
Wal-Mart(s).
SASSY!
Volatile.
Here’s the link.
http://www.zappos.com/n/p/p/7521578/c/3.html
You can buy them at The Pants Store in Leeds for a lot cheaper (like $39).
They have the squishiness of Teva flip flops, but a cute wedge heel.
I prefer these to ANY OTHER SHOE I OWN.
Thank me later.
You’ve got to look at the Pure Juice flip flops! (purejuice.com)
My neighbor has had hers for 20 (TWENTY) years and they still look great. My favorites are the “Megan” but you might like the higher “Bouncing Betty”. They’re cheap, too.
You keep at it, Sophie! I was inspired by you and Melanie to commit to The Shred for the month of May, so you and all your spasms are doing me good, too!
I am wearing flip-flop slippers much like those, too!
My vote on the sassy-flops:
http://www.anntaylorloft.com/catalog/product.jsp?productId=18978&N=1200266&categoryId=232&Ns=CATEGORY_SEQ_232&loc=LN&defaultColorNameFromCategory=Black&defaultSizeTypeFromCategory=Misses
:-)
Volatile is an Awesome brand. All different heights and I love the animal print styles. Very cute and comfy!
You can find some really cute flip flops at any of the stores that sell Candies. Here in our neck of the woods, that store is Kohl’s. I just got some sassy, cute pink ones that I’ll be wearing to a high school reunion next month.
I am dying at how funny you are. I really love, love, love visiting you, and when you talk about make up, well, it’s akin to the experience of eating food with bacon or cheeeeeese.
I don’t often comment, but don’t go changing, Sophie. Well, change your mascara and shoes, but you know what I mean.
Your un-shredded friend, Gretchen
Ok…I just WET MY PANTS and…I can barely see to type!! I was TOTALLY not expecting the Heidi Klum to come flying out and omg….I think I haven’t laughed this hard – ALONE- in sooooo long!!! Boy, I think I wont’ have any problem going to sleep now—-now that my eyes are going to be all PUFF-DADDY in the morning from crying/laughing!!
Oh, You people should be so JEALOUS that I have such a funny sister-in-law!!
Ohhhh mercy….You are the best!
xoxo,
JJ
There is nothing better than a L’Oreal buy one get one free at the drugstore. That ranks up there with onion rings, a clear sunny day, and your wonderful blog.
Haha!! Thanks for entertaining me this evening! Now…I’m off to check out those summer slippers! Sounds right up my alley.
have you tried yellow box sandals? they are fabulous, usually between $35 and $45. i’ve had the pair i’m wearing for 5 years and they are still going strong!
I’m imagining those pink, fuzzy slippers at the pool! LOL!
Also, I agree that we should take “pool sassiness” however we can get it – I think mine will come like this: “Look how much looser this (maternity) tankini is on me this summer!”
I love a little height on my flip flop, too. It just helps…=)
Enjoyed my visit this morning…
Great post! I thought I had sunk to a new low a couple of weeks ago when I bought mascara at Costco–two tubes of Borghese mascara for $15. Woot! But, actually, it’s pretty good. I have to apply a few coats to my scraggly lashes, but I like it.
Sorry I can’t help you with the flip flop issue. I’m 5’9″, my oldest daughter is 6’1″, and my middle daughter is 5’10”, so we are looking for any shoe that can make us seem more petite than we really are. I don’t think they make such an animal.
YellowBox flip flops!
I love Yellow Box flip flops. They have one that has a wedge heel and the straps are braided black leather. I have them in black but they also come in brown. I got them at Belk. They were $20.
I’m gonna have to get me some of that mascara. (I watch the Hills too. Audrina needs to get a life!)
I LOVE it! Thanks for the recommendations and the humor! I’ll have to try out the mascara & lip gloss. Sounds like my type of thing!
I CANNOT believe you just referenced MS-DOS, and as a result, I shall laugh out loud at inopportune times the entire day.
Thank You.
I’ve not read the gazillion posts in front of mine, but Walmart has some very cute wedge flip flops – $6.00 a pair!
Someone else may have pointed out the Walmart thing – that was my point. My fingers moved a bit too fast to the submit button.
I’m in the market for a new mascara myself. I bought the XXL and I like it ok, but it really bothers me that I am essentially applying my mascara 2x. (Once for the microfiber “extensions” and then once for the actual mascara…and then I often repeat the whole process for smokey eye makeup.)
As for shoes, I have found a new website I just adore and more often then not they have wide width shoes in my size (i.e. BIG & WIDE)– and for 75% off retail & a flat fee s/h! Try 6pm.com!
Try Reef Butter flip flops. They are pricier, but you will wear the soles out. $36 at Piperlime. You can find them at Dillard’s as well.
Hands down…”VOLATILE” wedges, they are cute, have tons of styles, and are the most comfy flip flops I have ever worn.
1. I love that you put “The” in front of CVS. I do not, but somehow my two year old has decided that it belongs there. Except that she calls it “The BZS”. Close enough. I looked up what CVS stood for one time and was horribly disappointed with the bland, generic flavor of their name. I’m sure if it were The BZS it would be MUCH more interesting.
2. Try RocketDog flip Flops. They have some super cute ones with good height – both in classic black and some with some great bling. I get ’em at Rack Room Shoes or at DSW.
Ha ha ha. Great post!
Switch flops are the absolute best! They have a wedge and one with a heel as well, and (gasp) they have matching straps to coordinate your outfit better. Here’s the link:
http://www.switchflops.com/cart/home.php
They are comfortable too! I might not look good at the pool, but my feet sure do. :)
Reefs are my favorite. If you’d like some a little less expensive, Target has some now with a bit of a heel. Plus, you can afford to buy more than one pair!
Love those new pink fuzzy slippers! And as far as flip flops go, one word…Yellowbox! They are the best and they have so much bling you might go blind sitting by the pool from the glare. Or else temporary blind cute other mothers. They have so many styles and flat, heeled, wedge, etc. You can find them http://www.zappos.com or any specialty shop. Good luck!
Marybeth Whalen has some CUTE black flip flops on this post. http://marybethwhalen.blogspot.com/2009/05/20-of-my-favorite-things.html
I mean CUTE!!
I’ll give a shout out to the Reef sandals! Love them all.
These in black: http://www.reef.com/girls/productdetail/girls/footwear/sandals/RF-001738
These in nearly any color:
http://www.reef.com/girls/productdetail/girls/footwear/sandals/1541
I don’t do heels on my flip-flops, though. The “What Not To Wear” crew would say they make petite people look squatty to wear thick-soled sandals.
First of all, YOU ARE SO FUNNY!! I literally LOL after reading.
I LURV yellow box flip flops. They are way cute and very comfy. They are not too expensive and they have several wedge options. Have fun finding the perfect black flip flop. Oh, and if you can catch a good shoe sale at Belk’s you can usually get YB around $20.
Yellowbox are the best. Belk has them on sale on and off all summer for about 20 bucks.
well i certainly don’t feel this should be categorized under rambling…for crying out loud, this is good stuff my dear!
i’m headed out to grab some of that petal stuff and the mascara too
hallelujah
& you are your sassiness at the pool- you work it girl, you work it!
Yellow Box flip flop are the bomb-diggity. They come in all styles and colors to fit your preference. It’s literally like walking on a temperpetic mattress that mated with a cloud. And they are super cute. A girl can’t ask for much more. Maybe a good pedicure to go along. Just make sure they are on sale. Try Belks. :)
I triple heart these flops from J Crew. I wore them so much I wore the gription plum off! They are super comfy and cute. I wept when I had to retire them after nearly offing myself in a grocery store wet floor mishap, due to the lack of gription. It wasn’t pretty…
http://www.jcrew.com/AST/Browse/WomenBrowse/Women_Shop_By_Category/shoes/flipflops/PRDOVR~67099/67099.jsp
Oh Boomama…. my day be so dull without your ramblings..!
Love Yellow Box myself!
very very cute post and thanks for the tips :)
No judgment here my friend!!!! I watch The Hill too, haha!! :)
Definately let me know if you find the flip flops. I, too, am in need of some pool side sassiness. If I can find it in the form of a shoe, then bring it ON!
With your help, maybe this year I might actually, you know, GO, to the pool.
Thanks in advance. Oh yes, and my kids thank you too.
mama of boo,

I LOVE Teva ‘Mush’ flip flops….sorry, no heel or sass….but oh the comfy goodness!
I love these flops from Victoria’s Secret.
http://www2.victoriassecret.com/commerce/onlineProductDisplay.vs?namespace=productDisplay&origin=onlineProductDisplay.jsp&event=display&prnbr=CN-235287&page=1&cgname=OSSHUDESSTW&rfnbr=5132&atb=B
S A S S Y !!!
I once found some really cute flipflops with a sweet heel at Old Navy!
I agree….lookin good poolside? Well…you just can’t put a price on it, sister!
I’m jealous that you are talking about your new “summertime comfort” of fuzzy slipper/flip flops…
when Spring just arrived in Washington state….like….last week!
LOL!
Great post as always. :)
these are by yellow box – they have a small platform with braided leather straps. i have ’em in brown. also – i didn’t pay this much money for them i think i paid $25 @ shoe center in toco hills shopping center (in decatur, ga)
http://www.shoemall.com/product/Yellow-Box-Womens-Baha-Sandal-Black-157317/
very comfy. the leather gives them a more “quality” look. i definitely had to break them in, but i think they’ll last more than 1 summer.
also — they’re not flip flips but i bought myself these in pewter b/c i finished my first year of grad school in one piece

Heading to CVS!! Is the Loreal lip gloss sticky? I just can’t do sticky lip gloss.
No help w/ the flip flops. I LOVE my Rocket Dogs, but they’ve quit making the style I have. They have a replacement one that LOOKS the same, but just doesn’t feel the same on my feet. :(
My favorite flip flops always come from J. Crew. I love the grosgrain ribbon ones, and sister and I will often go in together for a sale or to split shipping.
Thanks for the heads up on that mascara Boo! I saw in a mag and was thinking about buying.
Ginger
Hip hip, hooray for Infallible Lip Gloss! I also love it – it’s strange because it stays on like lipstick, so after about 10 minutes I put clear lip-gloss on top to add some shine. And the color really does last. I love that stuff.
And – my summer foundation that stays on in the heat and humidity is Revlon Colorstay…
These are my three favorite

The last one even has sequins..that adds to the sassy!
Yellow Box, YELLOW Box, Yellow BOX, oh, and you should know it is all about the YELLOW BOOOOXXXX!!!!
Girl, people will be so captivated by your flip-flop cuteness they will think you have been shredding for months.
Ok, I have no advice for the flip-flops because even though I live in FL, I don’t have even one pair. But, I DID get my Shred DVD in the mail today and I’m doing everything else possible to not start it. :) you and Melanie have me scared. :) I also know that my sons are home right now and are going to give me a hard time…but I will start…I promise.
http://www.jcrew.com/AST/Browse/WomenBrowse/Women_Shop_By_Category/shoes/flipflops/PRDOVR~81435/81435.jsp
Have you tried JCrew flip flops? I love them because they have a thick sole. And they come in very classy/preppy colors and plaids.
The Volatile flip flops/sandals are on sale at Dillards right now for $38. Very cute and many different styles! And so comfortable.
Yellow Box is now the only flip-flop I will ever wear. The most comfortable, yet adorable, “thongs” (what we in the South call ’em) you’ll ever own! ;) In the panhandle of FL, we wear flip-flops nearly all year, so that makes me an expert on the subject, lol!
I’ve just started reading your blog and listening to your podcast and I LOOOOURVE IT! I can’t wait to get into the loop.
Haven’t read through all your comments but a staple of my summer wardrobe for years has been the Reef Butter Flip flops. You can get them for about $35-40 at Nordstrom. The heel is perfect (not to small, not too tall) and they will last you at least two summers worth and still look fantastic. Comfy as can be too!
#3. I have some very similar that I got a Kohl’s, and I L.O.V.E. them! It seems that the dog loves them too, because he’s always carrying them off and snuggling up with them. Maybe I should buy him his own pair so he’ll leave mine alone.
I’m no help with the flip-flops. My black ones are about 3 years old and were a cheap find at I don’t even remember where. Sadly, my quest for a new pair has turned up nothing. I’ll be on the lookout for us both!
Look into some Yellow Box flip flops!!! Oh so comfy and oh so stylish!
Boo Mama – Go to Leahs! It is behind the colonade. Lots of flip flops – I love her Volatile flip flops, and I need a wedge too
Boo Mama – My blogging BFF (OK, you don’t that, but you are) please tell me, promise me, that you NEVER wear those ultra comfy slippers out of your house…please, for all that is good – don’t wear them outside…or What Not To Wear will surely be on your heals.
Crock flip flops….
J.CREW FLIP FLOPS!!!! ENOUGH SAID :)
They have a slight wedge to them that makes them a tad dressier than the standard flip flop without being confused with Brit-Brit Spears’ Forever 21 circa 1997 flip flops.
http://www.jcrew.com/AST/Browse/WomenBrowse/Women_Shop_By_Category/shoes/flipflops/PRDOVR~13429/13429.jsp
I don’t know where to begin, but you had me at flip flop. :-) I am SO WITH you on needing summertime comfort in a slipper and I do believe I must run out and get that slipper/flip flop you just posted.
As far as comfy flip flops, I LURV the flip flop and my favorite right now is from this cute li’l website called topitoffaccessories.com. They have them with a bit of an arch support which is so comfy and they also have a wedge style.
Flip – flops…
1. Rainbows!!!!!!
2. Reefs
3. Did I mention rainbows and reefs? :-)
BooMama, get thyself a pair of Fit Flops.
I am so serious. I swear to frog you can RUN MARATHONS in these things.
http://www.fitflop.com/
The Hills? Really? Okay, I admit it I’m a closet Hills watcher — some how that sounds really strange. Anyway, I just did a quick check in with them a few weeks back. It’s been a while since I watched — finally had enough of the whining & complaining. Please girls, you are living the high life — stop the whining for the Love of Pete!
Get thee to Williams Brothers immediately. They are stocked with so much sassy, flippy goodness.
And, of course, you are aware of their world famous bacon. Are you not?
These are very cute and on sale:
http://www.6pm.com/product/7392292/color/89
I just found THE CUTEST black wedged flip-flops at Target for less than $10. The tops are even beaded. VERY happy with that purchase…
I have a question about the mascara: Have you noticed whether it smudges or not? I can seriously only use the Clinique stuff because anything cheaper seems to give me racoon eyes about a minute after application.
Omigoodness! I can’t believe you watch The Hills too! (And actually admit it :D)
You’re my new BFF…
I love Oka B flip flops. They’re oh so comfortable, cute, affordable, and you can stick them in the dishwasher to clean them. Can a girl ask for anything else in a flip flop?
http://www.shoesthatloveyou.com/CategoriesTop.aspx?Category=23a64bf6-f8f6-455b-9f4b-df4c7ef08fe9
Well, OF COURSE I had to go out and buy the mascara and lip gloss you recommended because seriously…a girl can never have too much!!! I am in MN right now but will be taking my sassy self (with the new goods) to New Orleans later today for a girl’s weekend. I KNOW people are going to be admiring my lips and lashes…
Yellow Box flip flops have quite a few with a heel and some even have some bling on them. There are plain ones and leopard-y print ones depending on your mood. Good luck – personally, I love Chacos – they’re a little more “granola-y” than it sounds like you’re looking for, though.
I love the new CG mascara too! I had a coupon and decided to try it and I’m hooked.
J Crew flip-flops. The grosgrain wedge ones are the best. I have about six pairs of them, at least. Super comfy, super cute. You’ll love them. Plus, if you buy more than one pair, they are 20% off. (They are not that expensive to begin with)
Okay THANKS for the flip flop tips ladies! I just ordered two pairs of the Pure Juice that were on sale. I own my second pair of Reefs and love them, but they are not so dressy. I also may order a pair of those flip flop slippers as I have the same summer slipper issue!
Thanks BooMama!!!
