I Bet They Have Cement Ponds, Too

Hey y’all –

First of all, I sat here right by myself last night and laughed my head off at all of your brand preferences. And I can’t believe I forgot to include LeSeur English Peas and Blue Bell ice cream on my own list. Shame on me.

Second of all, I’m in Pittsburgh this weekend, and for the next couple of days, most of my bloggy activity will be over at AllAccess.

Third of all, WHY HAS NO ONE EVER TOLD ME WHAT A COOL PLACE PITTSBURGH IS?

No kidding: I was like Ellie Mae Clampett when we came over the bridge yesterday and I got my first glimpse of the city. I stopped short of saying, “GOSH, PAW – look at all them fancy buildins settin’ on them thar hills!”

But I thought it.

Have a great weekend, everybody!

Glad you like our little town. We are proud of how far we have come. Have a great time.

  2. oh yeah, you got the awesome view coming out of the fort pitt tunnel! that still takes my breath away, even after 31 years. :)

  3. Boomama, I live in Cleveland but visit Pittsburgh occasionally. I love all the bridges coming over the three rivers and the houses on the hill. Be sure to ride the Monongahela Incline!

  4. I’m glad you love Pittsburgh. It is a such a cool place. My family is from Pittsburgh so even though I’m in Philly now Pittsburgh will always have my heart. Plus, they have the Steelers! Get ready for some craziness tonight if the Pens win the Stanley Cup!

  5. The most memorable dinner I ever had was at La Monte Restaurant (if I recall the spelling correctly) .. it’s atop Mount Washington directly across from the Golden Triangle. The view is spectacular, and I recall three things about that time.

    1) The food was incredible.
    2) Looking down on Pittsburgh, as the sun went down and the city lights came up, was indescribable.
    3) The other guy picked up the check.

    Sort of a gourmet trifecta.

  6. Have a great time!! You sound like you’re hanging out with Beth and Travis with that Ellie Mae reference!
And the Blue Bell? Well, enough said, sister! It is DIVINE! I could so be their sales rep, but I don’t know if the ice cream would ever make it to the stores.

  7. I have a friend that owns a bar/grill in Pittsburgh called FATHEADS. Now, I haven’t eaten there personally because I haven’t been to Pittsburgh, but the menu alone is enough to make me drool! :) So, there’s a dining suggestion for ya. http://www.fatheads.com/menu.php
It’s enough to make me wanna book a flight to Pittsburgh, I tell ya!

    Hey Sophie,

Have a great time in Pittsburgh. It is amazing with all the hills. I will be watching your blogs.

  9. I was generally pleasantly surprised with all of Pennsylvania – who knew?

I am a former New York City girl that thought all other “cities” were for the fish..I am a born-again city-lover after spending time in Philly! Pittsburg is good…but Philly has Elmo….

  10. Have fun. My grandfather called them “leisure peas.” I left them off my list, too.

  11. Glad you are enjoying Pittsburgh – you might really get to see the city come to life if, ahem, WHEN the Pens win the Stanley Cup tonight!

    Have fun!

  12. Woke up with all of you on my mind. Have a good time, such a good time–A VERY GOOD TIME!! Sophie.

You could also say, as my Grandmother did, “Well, Good NIGHT!”

  13. You’d look smoking with Ellie Mae’s pigtails, I PROMISE.

  14. Laureen says:

And how about the Pens bring home LORD STANLEY!! Bless Beth’s heart, she was so good about getting us out so we could see the end of the game. Glad you like our city…

  15. You are hilarious! I love reading you blog!

  16. Aaaannd…. before you leave you must try either 1.) a Primanti Brothers’ sandwich, or 2.) some Quaker Steak and Lube Wings!! :) Enjoy your time in Pittsburgh!!

  17. I HATE PITTSBURGH! Yucky Penguins won the cup over my boys. It’s because the refs favored the penguins and didn’t want to see them cry!

    Cant spell Crosby without Cry!!!!

  18. Have a friend that went to school in Pittsburgh, and based on his recommendations, I would LOVE to visit.

  19. Oh, yeah…and there is NO substitute for that little silver can of Leseur English Peas. It’s what I grew up on; Mom would NEVER think of buying anything else. Be glad you missed all the nastiness of weather down here this weekend.

  20. Enjoy Pittsburg…they had a great night last night!

  21. Two culinary MUSTS: Pamela’s (or P & G Diner in Millvale) for breakfast — crepes with strawberries, sour cream, and brown sugar or other great things. Then take home a birthday cake or burnt almond torte from Prantl’s. You can kill two birds with one stone if you hit Pamela’s in Shadyside and then go to Prantl’s; both are on Walnut street.

  22. I am from pittsburgh and I LOVE that city. I live in NC now but all of my family is there. Glad you are enjoying it. So many people are surprised by how nice it is. I think people still imagine it as a steel town. Spring and fall are the best times to visit. Enjoy your stay.

  23. Born & reared in Pittsburgh. College and married in the Deep South…but OH THE TIME IN PITTSBURGH! Family still there and husband (a southern boy) loves, loves, loves to visit. Such a beautiful, cultural city full of life. A real treasure. I’ll be there in three weeks! Can’t wait….then on to Chataqua and Niagara Falls! Woohooo!!!!!

  24. I’m a transplanted Pittsburgher (see my comment under your other Pittsburgh post to get the full effect of how much I did NOT want to move here) and I have come to actually like the place.

All my ancestors prior to my grandpa on my dad’s side happen to be from the REALLY cool places, like Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, Louisiana, and Texas. I’m just a “y’aller” in a “y’inzer” body, I’m afraid. But still… Pittsburgh’s pretty okay. I might actually miss the place if I ever leave it. (Did I just say that???)
