Let’s Talk More About Pennsylvania

Well, I just had no idea about Pittsburgh, y’all.

The hills. The green. The bridges. The water. The old churches. The charm.

It was all a revelation.

In fact, I think I’m going to be fairly obnoxious about Pittsburgh from here on out. Because I fully anticipate that the next time I’m at a restaurant and a waiter asks me what I’d like to drink, I’m going to look at him and say, “Never mind my drink. HAVE YOU HEARD ABOUT PITTSBURGH?”

I got home really late Saturday night, so late that it was almost Sunday morning, and then I sat up and talked to my husband until about 2:30. I had a lot of information that I needed to share – plus, you know, I HAD TO TELL HIM ABOUT PITTSBURGH.

I also had to give him a run-down of all my electronic equipment that had fallen into disrepair over the weekend. It was the craziest thing. My camera wouldn’t use any batteries for longer than 5 minutes before the battery light started flashing. My phone wouldn’t let me get anywhere near the internet (it must have told me to contact my service provider at least 80 times over the course of the weekend, and quite frankly I did not appreciate its tone). My headphones fell apart. There was a point Saturday morning when I decided that I might as well have traveled to Pittsburgh with a bag phone, a Polaroid Instamatic and a Walkman.

But even with all the technological mishaps, I had THE BEST TIME. Oh my word. It was a blast.

And with all that being said, I would like to show you a picture of one of our hydrangeas, mainly because hydrangeas have absolutely nothing to do with my trip to Pittsburgh and I feel that I owe you a hearty dose of COMPLETELY DISCONNECTED CONTENT each and every day.

Isn’t it so pretty? Doesn’t it make you want to get married just so you can make a bouquet out of those flowers? And do you think they have hot pink hydrangeas in Pittsburgh? I bet they do. I bet they grow on hillsides next to rivers with scenic bridges. And historic churches.

Anyway.

I’ll be back later tonight with a Bachelorette recap. I watched last week’s episode but never got around to blogging about it, and for the thirteen of you who care, I do apologize.

Which reminds me: do you think that tonight Jillian might take the guys on a fantasy date to Pittsburgh?

Because she totally should.

  1. You are a mess. A mess I tell you. And…I’m one of the 13. I can’t wait to hear what you have to say about our pal Jill tonight! I’m willing to bet that this episode will be “wicked.” hee hee

  2. You’re a hoot! Obviously you will have to change your bi-line to read: Read by Thirteens of People Every Single Day since you’re pretty sure there are at least 13 people who check in regularly for Bachelorette updates! :)

I love the Bachelorette and watch every week but still come here for your updates.

And your hydrangeas are beautiful – thanks for sharing!

  3. Amy in TN says:

Glad you enjoyed your trip. Can’t wait for the recap tomorrow. I really missed it last week. (I must be one of the 13!)

  4. Well, I am #2 of the 13 who looked so forward to the Bachelorette blog…oh well, you’ll have to make up for it this week and make it extra hillarious! Can’t wait!

  5. oops, didn’t type quick enough…I suddenly became #4 of your 13 followers!

  6. With family from the southwestern par tof Pennsylvania, Pittsburgh has been on my radar screen for awhile now and it is indeed a lovely town. The first time they went into the deep South to visit one of my cousins at Clemson their reaction was much the same as your’s to their part of the country. Isn’t that a great thing about America? It’s so varied geographically it’s almost like several different countries in one! And considering the techonological difficulites you encountered it’s almost as if it was! All you needed was one of those funny plugs in the wall and you coulda been in England or something!

Totally LOVE the hydrangeas! LOVELOVELOVE them! And yes, I did want to get married just so I could carry a bouquet of those down the aisle and when I did get married and asked about carrying hydrangeas in my November wedding I was told “Absolutely we can do hydrangeas!” And then she told me the cost. For that kind of money I could’ve bought half of Pittsburgh! So no wedding hydrangeas for me. But I do have a bush in my yard that I hope soon will look as lovely as your own!

  7. OK…more! I want more!

And the hot pink hydrangeas are fantastic!! Did you know you can add coffee grounds and other things to the soil and the color of the blooms will change due to the acidity? Not that you’d want any other color than pink…

  8. Count me in the 13 about Bachelorette – we are not watching it in this house (just too disturbing to see all that slobbery full mouth stuff pardon me for bringing up the image) – and no I don’t think she should go to Pittsburgh – how would Krypton and Foot Fetishist and creepy pseudo-Cowboy singer deal with Pittsburgh – probably not well I’m just saying
Pennsyvlania is interesting – if you got the hots about Pittsburgh wait until you go to Philly delphiA (home of the cream cheese)

  9. I’m totally jealous of your hydrangeas. Mine haven’t bloomed since 2004. They’re just a big green bush. *sigh*

And my hubby would have been jealous of your trip to Pittsburgh. Why, on our honeymoon, we stopped by Pittsburgh just to watch a baseball game. I must confess, it was very exciting to see our names on the screen with the words “Just Married” underneath. It made up for the rain we had to endure up until that point.

So there. My hubby and I are both jealous of you today! ;)

  10. Beautiful hydrangeas! I can’t get them to grow to save my life…actually they grow and then die too fast. What’s the secret?

  11. Love the post. Love the hydrangeas. Am sure I will love the recap!

  12. Don’t tell me you went all the way to Pittsburgh and didn’t get a Primanti Brothers sandwich?

Because if you did, I know you would’ve probably blogged about it already.

It’s worth getting back on a plane just to go get one.

  13. Yep. That’s pretty much exactly how I felt when I went to Pittsuburgh for the first time, to visit my sister Bev. I think I took about 500 pictures of the green-ness and the hilliness.

  14. I LOVE LOVE LOVE your Bachelorette update! You better watch it or you’re gonna have me beggin my sweet hubby to take me to Pittsburg!

  15. Okay, so Pittsburgh’s great, I’m sure. I mean, it is PA. But for amazing-ness and awesome-ness, girl you gotta come to Philly. We have the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, Constitution Center, and Cheesesteaks. With Cheese. REAL CHEESE!

  16. I HAVE BEEN WAITING ALL WEEK FOR THE RECAP, just so you know. You’ve been busy and I LOVE Beth Moore, but…your recaps make the show for me.

Which reminds me, a few episodes ago, I missed part of the conversation during the show.
    Me: “What’d he say?”
Husband: “I don’t know. Want me to rewind it?” (Oh, confession. I RECORD it, too.)
Me: “No, that’s okay, I’ll just read it on Boomama.”
    Husband: “What–boo–what?”

So rest assured, I read the recaps. However sad that makes me.

  17. I love hydrangeas but can’t have them because of my “deer” problems!

Did you say something about Pittsburgh……….?????

  18. So glad you loved ‘Da Burgh’!

  19. Glad to hear you liked PA! It gets better the further east you go, though! Hershey- CHOCOLATE! Lancaster Country is beautiful too!

And I absolutely heart your hydrangeas! Do you feed them with anything?

    Looking forward to your update!

  20. So thankful you had a great trip and glad you loved Pittsburgh so much. It is a beautiful city! Your hydrangeas are absolutely beautiful too!
    Enjoy being back ‘home’!
    Blessings always,
    Kaye
    Matthew 21:22
PS LOVED the video of the proposal, thanks so much for sharing!

  21. I’ve never been to PA before and never imagined that Pittsburg would be beautiful. Perhaps it’s because the name contains the word “Pitts.” I’m glad to hear that it rises above! It sounds lovely.

  22. Note to self: apparently we need to go to Pittsburgh with BooMama. My husband and I stopped through a few years ago on our way to a wedding and then NYC. Although the Liberty Bell was great, the rest of what we saw was not! No offense to any PA people, but I no likie Pittsburgh. Don’t know why I am now talking like Adam Sandler! My point is, I am glad that you saw things you liked. If we go back, we will have to consult you first ;)!

  23. Pittsburgh. Really. Now come on over to Philly and we’ll show you a REALLY cool city! ;-)

  24. OK commenting again :) I can’t help it… Glad you liked the city… it gives me the most wicked headaches (I’m such a country gal… you should come just two hours east of P-burg, it’s even more beautiful… then again NOTHING compares to AZ where I grew up). You can for sure count me in on the 13 who look forward to your bachelor updates, they are fabulous… I missed last week… sigh

  25. Oh my Pittsburgh sounds wonderful. I fall in love with almost every place I go and I come home assuring my husband that we really should plan a vacation to (Town of latest travels).

But Pittsburgh is one that I’ve missed. I’ve got it now. And I’ll make sure I get there soon…. probably not with the hubs though. His idea of vacation is anything that doesn’t involve a big city and preferably does involve hunting or fishing.

  26. Love the hydrangea. Had bright blue ones at my wedding and reception … LOVE THEM! Glad you had a great trip. I teared up at the proposal video – so sweet!

  27. Laureen says:

OK, second try at this — so glad you love our city, and so glad to meet you at BETH MOORE!! We sang “In Christ Alone” on Sunday morning in worship and brought it all back. Keep blogging; we love what you have to say. And come back to the Burgh — my home is open to you anytime!

  28. Heather says:

My 3 yo son just saw your lovely hydrangeas and said, “Ooh, pretty flowers!” And then, “We go to store and buy some, Mommy??” I believe he liked them! :)

  29. Oh yay, you’re back up! God bless the CPU fairies.

And yes, those are some mighty fine hydrangeas. I think hydrangeas are pretty much the best flower ever.

  30. I’ve driven through Pennsylvania and it was gorgeous! Never been to Pittsburgh per se, but bypassed it very closely on the interstate if that counts.

Your hydrangea is gorgeous! It simply glows, and you know how much I love hydrangeas. They were my blog header for many moons.

    xoxoxo

  31. Oh, your hydrangeas are gorgeous. Mine started with a bang, but they’re going wimpy on me.

  32. Love love love your hydrangea bush….and what a beautiful color it is!! Splendid, I say! And I should have totally used that for a wedding bouquet 13 years ago…today, in fact!

They probably would have outlasted me, wilting in the Alabama 100 degree heat on that day!! :)

Glad you enjoyed Pittsburgh…I’ve never been there, but have enjoyed several other areas of Pennsylvania.

  33. Brenda Branch says:

I wish you had gone and straightened out Jon and Kate while you were in PA. Your flowers are beautiful….
    Thanks

  34. Sophie-

PITTSBURGH LOVED YOU AS MUCH AS YOU LOVED PITTSBURGH!!! :-)

I’m so glad you were able to come to LPL Pittsburgh! I enjoyed meeting you. And like Beth and Travis- I enjoyed worshipping Jesus with you.

Praying you are having a blessed day this morning… bag phone, polaroid, walkman and all!!

  35. Did you know that in the language of flowers (roses = love, ivy = fidelity, etc), hydrangeas symbolize frigidity and hatred?

Might want to consider that when making wedding plans. LOL! No idea WHY, though…they are the loveliest flower; I have a bush blooming now and I would love to have tons more!

  36. YAY!!! Finally, someone else has discovered that Pittsburgh is definitely NOT the arm-PITT of the north.

I moved here VERY much against my will. I was thinking stinky old steel town and people eating pierogies on the street corners. I have been pleasantly surprised lo these five years. It’s not my dream city, but it’s where God has planted my ungrateful rear end for the time being (and maybe forever — who knows?) and I intend to love it all up while I’m here.

Wait… I just realized… you were HERE??? And I didn’t MEET you? Dadgummit.

    Love ya, BooMama!

  37. I have also fallen in love with several northern cities and Denver in the spring and summer. Again, IN THE SPRING AND SUMMER. Very important. I nearly had the hubs talked into moving to Denver and then winter hit. They have SNOW from October to like April. And it is really cold – so cold you have to have one of those long puffy parkas and since I am not Heidi Klum I would have just looked like the stay puff man. So I will remain in Alabama and be glad that summer lasts longer than a few weeks and that once every 20 hundred years we get a snow day that lasts one day and is magical!

Plus my sister moved to Rockford, IL and she says the snow is only neat for like 1 day and then it turns brown and sucks! She also said southern girl blood is waaaay tooo thin for single digit temps!

    Julie

  38. Huh? Pittsburgh? Wow. I certainly saw a different Pitt than you did. Ever get lost there? Ever try driving somewhere around the hilly neighborhoods south of the city at night? When it’s raining? And you don’t know where you are? One of the “natives” told me that the road construction is done at night, so it’s little wonder our GPS not only couldn’t get things straight, but actually sent us around in circles. Literally. Nope. Sorry. Gave it 3 tries. I’ll just stay out in the sticks of Ohio. :-)

    PS: I’m actually #14.
