Every once in awhile we’ll have a weekend where, at the end of it, I think, That was just what I needed. And this weekend was definitely one of those. I had dinner with friends Friday night, a whole day in pajamas Saturday, church with my family this morning, a post-lunch nap, some great talks/emails/texts with people I love to pieces, and two hours of Jack Bauer tonight.
(And speaking of Jack Bauer, I need a quick “24” aside to say the following:
1) What was up with Freddie Prinze’s accent? It troubled me. It was like Helen Hunt in “As Good As It Gets” – the accent sort of floated in and out with varying degrees of New Yorkness, and it was a total distraction.
2) If you’re a person who has just blown up a helicopter and is also a part of an assassination plot, I’m thinking that it’s probably not a great idea to have a conversation on your cell phone where you’re saying things like, “We took out the helicopter, but now we’ve got to kill Hassad” while you amble down the crowded streets of New York City. BECAUSE SOMEONE MIGHT OVERHEAR YOU.
3) Tonight was like CTU 2.0. And all those new kids tried to make it seem like Chloe and Jack were antiquated relics who didn’t know how to use a push-button phone, and I took offense to that, quite frankly.
4) When will Jack Bauer realize that any time he is supposed to personally escort someone to meet with government officials, the situation is always going to end in gunfire?
5) I realized about 30 minutes into the show that the actor playing President Hassad was the same guy who played the game show host in Slumdog Millionaire. It had been driving me crazy trying to figure out who he was, and once I had my a-ha moment, well, THE RELIEF WAS PALPABLE.
Okay. That’s all. As you were.)
Anyway, the only thing that would’ve made the weekend any better would have been if the founder of Popeye’s had come to my house and fried up some chicken, but then again, it might’ve been too much. No need for joy overload. Much better to pace myself.
I was thinking yesterday about how a whole day in pajamas is one of my most favorite things in the whole wide world. In fact, if I’m really in relaxation mode, I love to wake up, stay in my pajamas all day, then take a shower before bed and put on new pajamas. I can be very productive on a pajama day, mind you – yesterday I probably washed and folded 104 or 216 loads of laundry while we watched basketball and screamed at the TV like a bunch of hillbilly sports fans. But the pajamas are my way of saying I am not leaving the house today. I have no plans. I am easy-breezy and by the way, there must be no make-up products of any kind anywhere near my face.
Also: I am likely to nap at a moment’s notice.
However, I know that some people don’t like pajama days. Some people like to put on real clothes as soon as they get out of bed in the morning because they say that staying in pajamas makes them feel lazy. Why, some people even walk around their house wearing shoes that have laces and stuff. I personally only walk around my house in sock feet, flip flops or slippers because shoes with laces make me feel confined, but that is probably not at all a surprise since clearly I obviously enjoy as much elastic as possible when relaxation is top priority.
And I really do think that the bottom line for me is this: a relaxing day at home is heaven on earth to me, maybe even higher on the heaven on earth list than bacon. And that is saying something.
So now I’m wondering: are you a pajama day person or not? Would you willingly spend your whole day in pajamas if you didn’t have to leave your house? Or do you feel like you at least have to dress a little bit if you’re home – maybe throw on some jeans or some workout clothes?
And let’s go even deeper: if you don’t have to be anywhere during the day, are you going to put on make-up anyway?
OH, I am all about the hard-hitting questions. And I’ll be sitting here in my pajamas and no make-up whatsoever just waiting to hear what you have to say.

Love love love jammie days, I had one on Saturday as well (and yes I bathed and put clean ones on Saturday night)!!
No make up if I’m not going out…that would just be way too vain!! lol
I love pj days, but I feel much better if I put my contacts in and put on a bra. Otherwise I feel sick, as in I have a cold and must eat chicken noodle soup- strange I know.
I get a lot done too because I know I’m not going anywhere so I do projects around the house!!
Pajama Days are to be treasured! I love them so very much…No makeup at all…that is a cardinal rule for a true pajama day…I take it to another level and don’t brush my hair…just tug the messy bed-head look into a ponytail holder or a head scarf to cover the works and I’m in for the day. My hubby loves them cause that usually means I’m baking…cookies, cakes, breads…all of it tastes better if it’s made on a PJ Day! :D
Oh, I am definitely in favor of pajama days! I stayed in my pajamas until 5:00 Saturday; I had to shower and dress to go to a party; otherwise, it would’ve been an all-day pajama day! And no makeup while I’m in my pajamas and defintely only slippers! And since I live alone, no bra either! After church on Sunday, I was in my pajamas for the rest of the day!
First, I had to laugh at your description of Chloe (24) and making her feel like a relic at the slick new CTU!! (Wonder who does all the Windex cleaning there?) That’s exactly how I feel when I’m around anyone who does “neat” things on the computer when I still haven’t mastered “cut and Paste” !!!
On PJ’s all day: I loved when we were snowed in for nearly a week and I could just get up and put some jeans over my PJ’s and be ready for the day (to go NOWHERE, thank goodness)!!!
At my house, we call those days,” Kappa Sig” meeting days! In other words, no bath…..just slobs all day long! I think that phrase was a college leftover from my sorority house days!
Have a great week, Sophie!
I LOVE pajama days. And I’ll take it a step further. Not only do I stay far far away from the makeup. I may or may not remember to brush my teeth before 3pm.
Uh..yeah! I have to admit that if it is during the week…I feel compelled to at least get dressed before my husband gets home but I love p.j. days.
I would never wear makeup if I did not have to! Yuck Yuck Yuck!
I LOVE my pajamas. But I can only stay in the until 11 or so before I start going a little nutty.
My husband can “relax” in jeans. I believe that’s just crazy. There is no relaxing being done until you’re in pj’s – or at the very least, sweats.
I had my sweats on the other night and hubby wanted to watch a movie, so I said “Let me go get something comfy on and I’ll watch it with you.” He about lost it… He laughed at me all night. I was talking about my pj’s!! They are definitely more comfortable than sweats :-)
Pajama Day, all the way. Except my pesky job gets in the way most days. And makeup? Not if I can help it on PJ Days. (And PS: “It troubles me” and “I took offense to that”: we must have an Ally McBeal fan on our hands here. My Pajama Days since 2010 began involve watching Ms. McBeal and Company: I’m up to Season 5…..)
Pajama days are my most favorit kind of day!! I rarely wear makeup even when I do dress to go someplace, so definitely NO makeup! Pajamas make me feel safe and warm with a mission to do not a whole lot of anything!
Love pajama day, but have a difficult time feeling really good without the shower part at least at some point. But I have no problem putting more PJ’s on post shower and carrying on. Do I put makeup on even if I am not leaving the house? Not even almost.
I love the elusive pajama day and definately no makeup either!
Make up is for people who have something to hide! Seriously, I can get lots done while in my pajamas. I can think seriously about cleaning up my latest mess, or just enjoying the fire, a book or a game. PJ on, I say!!
I could live in pajamas. I’d already planned a pajama day for me and the boy tomorrow, and your post has made me excited about it! (My 2 yr-old has pajama days with me.) Even when I do have to get dressed to go somewhere, I stay in my pajamas as long as possible!
I usually only wear makeup if I’m going out in public. Every now and then if we’ve been at home a few days, I need to wear makeup just to change things up. But that rarely happens. I MUST wear my contacts, though. If I wear my glasses, it’s WAY too tempting to just slip them off and take a nap at any given time. Especially if I’m wearing pajamas.
I do have to wear shoes or something at home though, because my feet hurt if I don’t.
OH, YES! Love a pajama day…and then shower and into new ones for the evening! Even on days when I work, I come home and get right into pjs…my friends know they’d better catch me quick or they will find me pajamaed.
We love pajama days around here. I actually call them “casual days”. I figure if people who work in offices can have “casual days” so can SAHM’s. ;o) Now, I will say, that if I need to do anything remotely productive, I at least need to put on a bra. No bra = getting nothing done.
Well, I’m a robe gal, since it’s cold up here where I reside. And I am so relieved to hear I’m not the only one who has spent at least most of the day in her robe! I do, however, always put on my face. Just a habit acquired from my mom, and I feel that the moisturizer, etc is a protection–you should see my 87 year old mother’s skin!
I still have 24 on TIVO. So the observations are interesting, but not spoilers. It was all over somewhere that someone from Slumdog was going to be on. Now I know where to look.
OH, but Sunday is never a PJ/robe day. Gotta worship the King.
I try to be a pj day person, I really do, but I get antsy after lunch, and I usually end up getting dressed. I don’t know what is wrong with me. Maybe I just need cuter pjs. yes, that must be it.
Also I’m all about the no makeup days, even on days when I really should.
Funny you should ask. As I started reading your post, my lip was curling and I was thinking, I do NOT like staying in my pajamas all day. I don’t mind staying in sweats on Saturdays. When I became a stay at home mom, I learned very quickly that my mental health depended on my getting up, dressed, and putting on make up. I am glad it works for you.
The experiment did not work, and felt I should come here and fess up.
I made it in my PJ’s until 1:30, and then I just had to shower, dress, do my hair and makeup. I just could not make it the whole day!
I didn’t nap either. I feel like a PJ day failure.
I have a lot of pajama days since it’s been so stinkin’ cold (who wants to go out into that if you don’t have to) and I’m out of work. I’m really starting to not feel guilty since it’s the economy’s fault not mine. Anyway, I want to be comfy and pj’s are the comfiest…like you I like being in pj’s all day then taking a shower and putting clean pj’s on. I do actually do the laundry.
LOVE jammie days with NO make-up. Definitely. They’re good for the soul.
I recently found your blog; love it..and you too! My girls and I started a stay- in-our-jammies-all-day-long-on-the-first day-of-school-Christmas-break-tradition when they were in grade school. Wearing jammies all day is a good excuse to eat breakfast 3 times and drink coffee all day!
Girl, its like we are twins separated at birth, seriously!
I’m totally a pajama girl! And I’m with you on the shoe thing in the house- my feet need some room to breathe. No make-up if I’m staying home- I’m cheap and it seems like a waste of make-up.
I absolutely LOVE pajama days. That is what I love most about winter. It is an excuse to have those lazy weekend days where you can just “pajama” around your house, light a fire, and watch a good movie. Even on non-pajama days, the first thing I do when I walk through the door is change into “comfy” clothes. Home and jeans just don’t mix.
My everyday clothes are so infused with elasticity and comfyness that I COULD sleep in them. In fact, sometimes I do. Therefore, using that logic, I have been to The Wal-Mart in my p.j.s.
Oh girl…pajama days are a true passion for me! Love, love, loovve them!!
I can easily slip into the “no-makeup, no bra, pajama wearing day”. I may just have to have one of those days tomorrow.
We had that same “Where have we SEEN that guy?” thing, but with the lead terrorist. It finally occurred to us when he was at his partner’s house that he was Percy, the mean guard from Green Mile!
Our whole family had a pajama day yesterday and it was awesome!!! If I get dressed, I usually put on make up, if it’s a pajama day no make up comes near my face.
Sometimes pajamas, sometimes sloppy clothes. But never, never, never do cosmetics touch my skin on a lazy day.
Oh, holy Moses. I need to switch my subscription to you over to regular feed reader instead of email. I always get here so late!
Okay, I am not going to weigh in on the pajama conversation because CLEARLY (130 ish comments later).
But on 24 –
1) So glad you are watching.
2) I agree with all of your points WHOLEHEARTEDLY, particularly #4.
3) Hubby and I tonight realized that Blonde CTU Agent (whom I do not care for) and F.P. Jr need to realize that ALL CTU romances end badly – usually with someone dying. Take heed, kids.
Ooooh, I love a jammie day. And, definitely no make-up. I mean, what’s the point of putting on make-up and not even putting on real clothes? Of course, I forget to put make-up on on regular days, so it should be no surprise that I don’t wear it on a jammie day!
Those days are few and far between, but I love Pajama Days. I do not feel lazy. I appreciate every single moment of a Pajama Day. However, most days I do dress, wear make-up and shoes… but I’m a barefoot girl inside the house.
Oh, and I love 24. I started watching all of the old episodes with my 18 year-old son last year. We caught up, and this year we are going to watch it before he heads off to college on Monday mornings. Gotta love Jack.
Girl, I’ll take a pj day any day of the week!!!!! And who needs makeup??? But then I get weird about 4pm and feel like we have to pull it together! Hmph.
Love ya Boo.
Have yourself a GREAT week!
I am TOTALLY a pajama person. Sad thing is, most days I stay in my pj’s for morning carpool line (I throw on a sweatshirt for good measure) and then RUSH to get dressed before the kids come home … you know, to look like I’ve been up to something all day.
If I have nowhere to go … all day PJ’s…and I would agree, heaven on earth.
As for make up … sometimes even on pajama day but not always.
Long time reader, don’t think I’ve ever commented. But I MUST comment on this post! PJ Day’s are my hobby!! I could live in my pj’s and no make-up if it weren’t for, oh , say….life! Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy life, and venturing out. But I just love that feeling of like you said, making a statement that I’m not going anywhere! So on pj days for me, nothing but pj’s and definatly no makeup. If I’m lucky, no contacts either, I’ll just sport the glasses. But that’s very very rare. My 1 year old has a nasty ear infection that won’t go away and we are scheduled for tubes on Friday. Because she has run fever again all day today, and can’t go to “school” tomorrow, I started planning my pj day for tomorrow today before the sun even started going down. Is that bad???
BooMama – I THINK WE WERE TWINS SEPARATED AT BIRTH!
I absolutely DO NOT wear make-up if I don’t plan to leave the house!
And I LOVE pajama days….have them quite often…..TODAY was one, in fact!
:) Wish I’d had some bacon, it would have been a perfect day! :)
I’m a pajama wearing girl married to a “must shower right away” guy!! Thank goodness our daughters side with me on this one!
I love a pajama day, but since I have a dog that needs to be walked, the closest I come is a “Sweats” day. Make-up on those days doesn’t happen, even though I have blond eyelashes, like someone mentioned up above, and look a bit sad without mascara. I had a Sweats day on Sunday and it was awesome.
By the way, IMDB helps with those pesky questions that pop up while watching TV or movies. Seriously, it’s fantastic.
I am all about the pajamas (or some sort of pajama-equivalent). I’m with several of the other commenters….why create laundry for myself and why put wear and tear on perfectly good clothes if we are not going outside? I love my clothes…I want them to last a long time.
I have the same logic for make-up…why waste perfectly good product that is not going to see the light of day?
My kids also ask where we are going when we get dressed…I have the same policy for them….I don’t want them wearing the knees out in those jeans any sooner than they already will, so when we are not in public, they are wearing hand-me-down, highwater sweats and a T-shirt that likely includes some sort of ketchup stain.
I’m just keepin’ it real….
Also….I am going to pray this evening for some forgiveness because I am afraid I am judging the “NON” pajama people in your comments. I have already decided that they are weirdos even though they are likely very nice people. It’s kind of like the other day when I was reading a thread on facebook that a friend of mine had started. She had mentioned bacon and one of her friends said….(you might want to sit down)…that she DOES NOT LIKE BACON AND DOES NOT UNDERSTAND IT’S APPEAL.
I have never met this person in my entire life but already I have a chip on my shoulder towards her. Clearly….I have some praying to do. The LORD needs to work on my judgy-judgy heart. We need unity in the body.
If I get dressed and then stay home, my day is all but ruined! I cannot be productive in regular clothes. Now that I’m actually typing this, it sounds sort of sad; but hey- I’m comfortable AND have a pretty clean house most of the time. If I actually got dressed there is NO TELLIN what things might look like around here! (I’m just laughing thinking about what Stacy London and Clinton might think about all of these comments! They might be a tad mortified… :)
I *have* to wear lace-up shoes around the house or I don’t feel right. Or my feet start to hurt. And if I haven’t showered by lunch, the Slime starts to show up on my body and that just adds to my full loser status. :) Oh, and the only makeup I ever, ever ever wear, is lipstick. But only when I leave the house.
“No makeup” has become a way of life since I began working at home in Aug 09. So much so, when I have an important “event” my son, 10, will remark, “What’s on your face?”…leading inevitably to, “Why do girls do that?, “Does it hurt?”, and “When will it be off?”.
I think the combination of PJ’s and makeup is illegal in West Virginia and some parts of North Ga.
As a mama of a three year old and eleven month old twins, unless we are going somewhere, every day is pajama day.
Although, I wish I could take a nap.
And a shower.
Also, SEC basketball is simply the best.
Especially the KY Wildcats.
I’m just sayin…..
This cracks me up because I have one child who loves nothing more than pajama days (she spent half of MLKjr Day in pjs), and the other one was perefctly dressed and ready by 8. I can’t do pj day-but I will wear lounge pants and shirt. I always put on a little bit of make-up. I feel like I’m ready to tackle the world once I look somewhat put-together.
I think you stated it pretty well. Pajama days little bits of heaven on earth. NO makeup on pajama days.
I’m a closet pajama-dayer. I lounge around in them right up until 20 minutes before my hubby gets home from work. Then I’ll jump in the shower and get dressed in real clothes so that he won’t know I’ve been lazing about in my pj’s all day.
The makeup? Not so much. Makeup is never worn in the house, and only in varying degrees outside. (I have a system. Gym? Powder only. Library? Power and lipgloss. Grocery shopping? Powder, lipgloss, mascara. Anything having to do with my mother? The whole enchilada, because otherwise she’ll say something about me looking pale-you know she will!)
I think I need professional help.
We shared a mutual pajama day on Saturday – just the BEST! My sister and I were visiting a dear friend and the three of us sat around in our PJ’s all day and chatted up a storm. Perfection, if fact my sister thinks it is the solution to world peace!
I lived with 3 wonderful women in college whose friendships have blessed me with many gifts over the years. But, far and away, the best gift any of them have ever given me is from my former roommate Molly. She would walk in the door and not even pause to say, “hello” on the way to her room. She would immediately remove her real clothes and put on her pjs. She saw absolutely no reason to wear real clothes while at home ever. I wholeheartedly adopted this practice and always enjoy a pj day.
Sitting here reading this post at 12:21pm while STILL IN MY PAJAMAS!! My junior higher gets home in 2 hours, my elementary schoolers another hour after that and my husband 30 minutes later. So, I’ve get 2 more hours in my pajamas until my junior higher gets home. I will change right before she gets home so it doesn’t look like I have been sitting around IN MY PAJAMAS all day doing nothing.
Yes, yes, yes, on jammie days. Although, now as a SAHM, I find myself getting dressed more often even though I don’t have to, just to feel like if I need to exit the domicile immediately before I go crazy, I can. Just never know when some retail therapy, or lunch out, is required. :)
Don’t like the makeups either, but I look like a ghost without it, so if I think I’m in danger of running into a human, I have to.
Would love a jammies day – we live in the country and wearing jammies in a goat pen can be — compromising. But I’ve been known to wear a nightgown with a long heavy coat buttoned over said gown and my “no poop in my shoes” pen footwear. Don’t wear flip flops but I have on sandals, sweatshirt and very comfortable Old Navy Jeans at this moment (I would never have tried the ONJ except you raved about them and I trusted and OH WHAT A BLESSING)
Pajama day – yes, thank you very much. Not only that, on the days I do get dressed, I always change into my pajamas when I am back at home even if I know I’ll have to get dressed to go back out again later. It is so much more comfortable and I hate cleaning/cooking/relaxing what-have-you in clothes that bind. So uncomfortable. And, makeup only when necessary.
Adore pjs. The end.
YES – to pajama days. It drives my husband crazy – my kids love it like I do!
NO – to make-up on pajama day or any day not leaving the house. some days leaving the house just going anywhere to see (hopefully) anyone I know.
24 – so exhausted from running around New York with Jack the last 2 nights! How about “Bubba” Gump being the head of the CTU this year! I can’t see him without thinking about shrimp!
I ADORE a pajama day! Totally. I also ADORE putting on make-up and getting dressed up – I guess I just like a variety. Staying in p.j.’s feels like a luxury as much as going out somewhere special. It’s so nice to not have an agenda but I do feel pretty productive at home on those days. Here’s to many more. Something about nesting in the fall and winter makes me crave pajama days much more than the summertime. :)
L-O-V-E me a pajama day! My mom and I always have one when we visit each other (she’s 14 hrs away). My 3 yr old daughter often changes into about 6 pairs of pajamas on any given day. She’s hilarious!
Aww…thanks Sophie. We will miss you! Won’t be the same kind of reunion without you! Wish you could be there! Sending hugs back your way through your friends…I’ll have to leave Saturday a.m. to fly to San Francisco for my son’s California reception. Missing you! Just knew you’d be there;)
Yes, I love PJ days, but yes, I usually always wear makeup. And yes, I too am weary of the Chloe-is-technologically-inept storyline because that girl has been blowing up things since that tall blonde was in junior high, thankyouverymuch.
Oh – you mean people actually wear REAL clothes when they’re at HOME?!
Insanity.
I stay in my jammies till 5 minutes before walking out the door, and get back in my jammies 5 minutes after arriving home. I don’t mind doing this routine up to three times a day. Because comfort, it’s worth it.
I do love me a pajama day! I always shower- every day. but sometimes it’s not until late afternoon :) and I always put on makeup after I shower- something about how it makes my face feel, not because of how it looks. But what clothes I wear depends on my husbands work schedule- if he will be working late and I won’t see him until kiddo’s bedtime then I wear pjs all day, if he comes home for dinner or earlier, then I wear jeans or whatever, you know, to “look nice” all this is assuming I don’t have to run errands though.
also I have to do chores before I shower, I hate to clean after I’ve showered, it just makes me feel dirty again..
thanks for this post though! I have a friend who is up and showered and dressed and make-up-ed and all that by like 630 and she is a sahm and I think she is just crazy but she thinks I’m crazy..so I guess it’s even :)
Pajamas! Pajamas!
Your 24 commentary is funny…I said to my husband when he was trying to decide whether or not to stay (at the car with Kim),”Um, hello? He’ll be there in 24 hours.” haha, I crack myself up. Actually, it was one of the handful of times that I got a smile with teeth out of my husband. Yes!
If I’m in my house, I’m in pajamas…and I’m almost always in my house. I have a (almost) 6 month old who keeps me very busy, most days I don’t get a chance to shower (ew), but if I do…I get right back into a pair of clean pajamas. I don’t see the point of putting on “nice” clothes when they will inevitably get covered in breastmilk, spit-up, or poop. All jammies, all the time.
I am sooooo with you on the pajama days! They are my most favorite thing in the whole world! Although, you can bet on a really good pajama day, I am watching several good movies in bed or on the couch with lots of junk food!!! Have you tried the Golden Double Stuff Oreos? I’m pretty sure they have crack in them!
Pajama days are an absolute necessity. I can’t even tell you. And I’m talking, pajamas for EVERYONE!! I feel like it’s a way to be proactive in the effort to reduce the amount of laundry I am currently doing each day. Pajamas rock!
I SO enjoyed this post! I LOVE pajama days and even my four year old daughter has caught on and frequently suggests that we spend the day in our jammies. I’ve often felt guilty about not wearing any make-up on a day at home. So many of my friends are up with the sun and looking ready for company to drop by any second. I’m just not like that. I don’t care if you drop by while I’m in my jammies, because I’m HAPPY. I worry more about how uncomfortable THEY might feel, but trust me – I’m not bothered a bit!
I have changed SO much. In high school or college I couldn’t leave the house without reapplying make-up or touching up my hairdo. Now as a mom I haven’t got the time, and I don’t really bother unless I have an appointment, a meeting, or we’re going to church or somethin’.
Thanks for this post! And for keepin’ it real!
