So Many Thoughts. So Little Narrative Structure.

Because sometimes a girl just needs a numbered list.

1. Did you enter the Eggland’s Best giveaway? Well, here’s our winner.

2. This mascara is my new favorite. And yes, I know I switch make-up favorites every few months, but that’s one reason why being a girl is so much fun, now isn’t it?

Well, that and shoes.

And haircuts and highlights.

3. SPEAKING OF – if any of you B’ham people have a hair person you adore and might even consider an official HAIR WIZARD, would you let me know? Please? I would love to go to a super-talented person, sit down in his or her chair and say, “Work your magic.” Because my hair is in desperate need of some magic right about now.

4. Are any of you who live in the eastern U.S. snowed in? I’ve seen lots of pictures from the crazy snowstorm, and as someone who has never seen more than three inches of snow at one time, I honestly can’t wrap my mind around what it would be like to have two feet of snow ON MY PORCH.

5. I’ve gotten a couple of emails about whether or not I’m going to do American Idol posts with a Mr. Linky this year. And I’m thinking yes? Maybe? Probably? Yes. Definitely. I think. But not until it’s time for Top 24.

6. There were a few people who really stood out to me last night in the first round of Hollywood auditions. Loved Casey James, especially, and I thought several of the girls were super-talented. And I’m already much more interested / invested than I was this time last year, so I think that bodes well for what’s down the Idol road. Really enjoyed the addition of Ellen DeGeneres, too. It’s nice to have a little funny in the mix.

Who do y’all like so far? Any favorites?

  1. We are in Maryland and TOTALLY snowed in!!

    Check it out….

    http://reddirtandcrazy.blogspot.com/2010/02/its-snownamirun-for-your-lives.html

And now we are in the midst of the Aftershock. It’s not pretty…I’m knockin on the door of Crazyville as we speak!

    Love your Blog!

  2. I don’t ever remember their names…but the guy last night who sang “Straight Up” with the guitar. I LOVED that. It was like a much better version of the seventh grade for me. With no big poofy bangs. I needed a hair wizard back then!

  3. o my soul…i love me some group night on idol…
but i have to say OH MY GOSH HOW MANY YEARS HAS THIS BEEN SHOW ON? LEARN YOUR STINKIN WORDS…..and big mike happy birthing your baby all up throughthis competition…

um and the phoenix oh my soul they are awful….

  4. hornetmom97 says:

Kristy Goeb @ Headquarters in Trussville…even if you don’t live in Trussville (I live off 280)…she’s totally worth it and doesn’t charge half of what the salons here do. Their number is 661-0644.

  5. My favorite was the girl from a little town in TN who hadn’t been on a plane before. My heart broke in a thousand pieces when she was sent home last night.

    Thanks for answering my question!

  6. I’m in Virginia, and yeah. Definitely snowed in. I just moved a month ago from Houston, so this whole experience is a little weird to me…where I’m from, if we get snow it melts when it touches the ground. Here, there is easily 3 feet of snow outside my door!

  7. oh, i’m so glad to hear you like that mascara! i’ve been using costco’s borghese brand for years, but i bought lash blast at costco last week because there was a rockin’ coupon for it. i can’t wait to try it when my borghese runs out!

don’t think i’m not nervous, though…my mascara is sacred! :0) finding a good one is right up there with finding a good hairdresser for me.

  8. Definitely try L’oreal Double Extend Beauty tubes. It comes off super easily and it makes lashes reaaally long and doesn’t flake or smudge. It is definitely my fave (which means that it will be promptly discontinued.)

    :)

  9. Also from VA, and also snowed in… quite delightfully, I might add. It’s been like a mini-vacation for our family–snow days from school for the kiddos, and work closing for my hubby. It forces everything to slow down and just *be*. Not to mention it’s gorgeous!

  10. i’m in central PA just north of Harrisburg (the state capital). we’ve got snow, thankfully not near as much as my friends in VA and MD do! i was happy over the weekend when the first round finished up — my 5 yr old finally got to see what “sledding” was — then after yesterday, well a snow day from work is not as fun as a snow day from school. today we’re on delays… we’re settling at 30 inches, give or take a few…

  11. 18″ the first one. 5″ the next one and it’s STILL snowing and we’re just a little weary of it all. As in clawing at the doors and running around the living room in circles. Just a bit. Hurry Texas! Oh yeah, it’s snowing in Dallas today. Good grief.

  12. I live in the DC area, and we are TOTALLY snowed in! I’m a teacher and haven’t been to work since the 4th, and we’re not going back till the 16th! We’re from GA, and all of this snow is just CRAZY! You can see my pics at:

    http://thestoryofthesmiths.blogspot.com/

And I’m with on you American Idol..I’m enjoying the addition of Ellen! And my fave at this point is Andrew Garcia.

  13. Amy in PA says:

I had a 18″ snow drift on my stoop & could barely open my front door. We had 12″ over the weekend. I’d post pics if I had a blog but, trust me, it’s all white & purty outside. And also really cold!

  14. Angela at Blades in Vestavia is really good. (She is the salon owner.) 979-2231. I am about to try the new Aveda salon at the old Galleria movie theatre. They’ve completely renovated it for the beauty school, and the instructors check in on you several times while you’re there to make sure you’re comfortable and OK with the work being done. The environment looks VERY professional, and I have three friends who’ve already had good luck there … including one who had a cut AND highlights done. They also do mani-pedis, etc. I think the cuts are like $15 and the color $30? I can’t remember exactly, but it seems like it cost about half of a regular salon. Something to think about!

  15. Just as apparently so many have sworn off Bachelor – we are totally a NON AI zone in our house.
We live near Fort Worth Texas and are currently experiencing VERY heavysnow – maybe as much as 4 inches to fall today. For a Texan – that is a LOTTA snow – we don’t do know – it would take divine intervention to make my hair good today – ski caps are good for warmth and bank robbery – I’m going for the warmth btw!

  16. as a southern girl living up north(OHIO) – we currently have over a foot and 1/2 of snow and i am TIRED of it!!! the weatherman says we have an alberta clipper coming in on sunday with more SNOW!!!

  17. Hair wizard in B’ham = Morgan Mondy at Morgan-Ashley Salon. I have gone to her many times and just said, “What do you think we should do here?!”, and my hair always ends up looking great. She’s also a “color specialist”, for what that’s worth. The salon is just off of 280, down Hwy 119 — very close to Spa One Nineteen. They have a website: www(dot)morganashleysalon(dot)com. No, I do not work there, but I love it — Christian atmosphere… it’s great. :)

As for ‘Idol’… I am loving Casey James, too. Be still, my heart!

  18. I recommend anyone at Studio 21 on 280!!! They helped take my highlights (which I had done at an unnamed location nearby) down to normal and restore my natural color…and sanity!

  19. I’m in Northern NJ…we have a foot and a half approximately, maybe slightly more. Hubs made it to work today. They really do a great job clearing the roads here. Thankfully. His office was closed yesterday so he was home. We both reached the conclusion that he will most definitely need a hobby when he retires.

Idol-last year it was the boys but this season looks like maybe it will be the girls. My only comment today (other than the novel I’ve already written) is that I wish we didn’t have to see that whole group thing. I mean really what is the point. So much whining! I’m liking Ellen…not a fan of Kara so much. I love the show and we’re looking forward to the new season.

  20. I love the “Straight Up” guy too! And as much as I miss Paula, Ellen is about the only person I might like better. She is FUNNY.

  21. I am in Maryland, and we have between 3-4 feet. It is NUTS! There is rumor that we are still getting more this weekend. Spring could not come fast enough!

  22. Jason at Salon U in Homewood-870-8708..I just discovered him when my hairdresser decided to quit doing hair :( I spent almost two years looking for someone around here and I LOVE him..great prices

  23. Check out my aunt’s blog cherdecor2.blogspot.com She lives near Lancaster, PA. She took those pics from inside her house.

I don’t watch AI until they get the to top 12. Then, I faithfully count on your critiques :)

  24. Call Kathyrn at Votre Salon in Patton Creek in Hoover. She is fabulous!!!!!!!!! Been doing all sorts of magic on my hair for several years now. Never a bad cut and a very relaxing atmosphere! 987.9994

  25. I haven’t commented before, but I do read your blog and love your posts! I just had to comment on this one because, living in Fargo ND, we not only have about 5 feet of snow on our porches all winter long, we often have high temps of below zero temps throughout January-February! Consider yourself lucky :)

  26. We are in WY and like Taryn, 2 feet of snow on the front porch is ho-hum here. Wishing for spring? We try not to think about it. Spring is when we get the most snowfall! About June 15 the snow will end for the summer. Maybe. {fingers crossed}

  27. I can’t believe this is the day I chose to “pop” in! A couple of years ago on a hair post I recommended my daughter when she was working at your old salon. Well she is now at Santa Fe Day Spa and she WILL work magic. She’s awesome and cute as she can be! AND she goes to TCABH. Her name is Micah Weller. Give her a call. Oh and she was just chosen to spend the day with a Redken colorist from NY and learned some new things. Whoever you pick I hope it turns out great!

  28. Sitting up here in Canada with barely enough snow to speak of – weird!

  29. Hair salon: Janny, Allison or Lindsay at Blue Velvet in Mt. Brook village. Been going there for years. Jenny is meticulously OCD with her highlighting and the results are spectacular.

  30. I’m in Indiana and going on day #3 of no school (snow days).
It’s not so bad! We do have 4wd and can get to the store if needed.
I like it! I have teenagers and they love staying home as much as I do.
    We’ve had a great time!
They like to have friends over….so we cook & eat & play!

Plus….I just received my copies of Beth Moore’s new book, PW’s cookbook and The Preacher’s Wife’s new book!
I am in BOOK HEAVEN!!!! So I wanna stay home and devour them!

  31. Tanya at Jilbere Salon (it’s an Aveda salon) in Cahaba Heights next to Whole Foods and The Summit. She is a great colorist who was a master stylist at the fancy Richard Joseph Salon in Mountain Brook. She is now owner and manager at the Jilbere Salon. She managed to dye my hair red without turning me into Carrot Top. Love her.

  32. Oh yea, we are getting slammed! I live in DC and we have about 50 inches outside my house! best thing about the storm though is that it’s keeping congress from working and passing bad bills! I posted a couple short videos of myself narrating in the storm..felt a little like anderson cooper in katrina. Numerous blonde moments caught on film. and totally agree, casey james is going to be good!!!

  33. I have been going to Kimberly at Tangles in Vestavia for a few years now. She’s is amazing! My hair has never looked better and I get compliments all the time! I wish I could post you a picture here…if you could see, you’d call her immediately!!

  34. That Andrew with the glasses and cool guy hat! He’s gonna win it all! ; )

  35. I just have to put in a little plug for Tim Urban. (from AI) He’s such a cutie. He’s a lovely Christian young man who was homeschooled and has 9 siblings!!!

He goes to my church and is friends with my sons (and heavens but that makes me sound old!)

Oh, and he has a nice voice which is ever so handy when one is on AI.

  36. The very first time I heard Andrew Garcia I got chills. Really. I was so happy to hear him do well this week. I think he’ll make it for sure. (Plus, he has an amazing back story. Oh my.)

  37. Long time listener…first time caller!

I wouldn’t exactly call it a “blizzard” but we’ve been getting a lot of snow in North Texas…at least for us. In fact, I just started a blog and was thrilled for the new material.

  38. So I am pretty obsessed with Andrew Garcia. His voices gives me goosebumps — amazing
:-) and his story was cool too!

  39. The show lost a little something when they sent home “Trouble guy who went to jail for three years when he was fifteen for robbing a bank with a bb gun”. He was my favorite! I’m not a fan of group night.

  40. Cindy Clark says:

Augusta goes to the greatest girl at Hair Reflections (Summit, by Saks) Her name is Shannon. She is on the cheap side. Only 30.00 She cuts Augusta’s hair into the cutest cuts ever. Augusta gets lots of compliments and send lots of people to Shannon. Augusta has been going to her for about 4 years. She is also great with color.

  41. My kids have had TWO SOLID WEEKS of snow days, which is a LOT of togetherness with young teenagers. Fortunately, they leave tomorrow for a mission trip in Boone, NC, and I am going to do some serious relishing in the quiet.

  42. We’re in Massachusetts and let me just tell you one thing, I would not want to be a weatherman right now. They were so dead wrong about the “huge snowstorm thats coming our way.Lock your doors and prepare for the worst storm we’ve seen in years. YEARS. Its coming out way,oh yes it is”.

I kid you not,we got half an inch.Half.

Even you got more then we did! Like I said on Facebook the other day, New Englanders shouldn’t panic about such things. Its just snow,we’re used to it and so far none of us has died from it.I choose to think happy thoughts as I drink hot chocolate and make snowmen.I do hope we get a good,old-fashioned storm soon.I need one more time to play in the snow before summer!

Sorry for this really long comment.I’ll stop now! ;)

  43. This is totally unrelated to this post, but an IMPORTANT question. :) I made your grandmother’s chocolate pudding recipe today – and can I take a minute to just say oh.my.gracious…FABULOUS! I planned on making a chocolate pie, so I baked the pie crust, made the pudding, poured the pudding in the shell, and waited….I then used your meringue recipe (also YUM!) and baked the pie until the meringue was golden. It tasted DELICIOUS, but was sort of a soupy mess. Did I not let the pudding set long enough? Any tips you can send me would be GREAT! I can’t wait to make it again…maybe tomorrow. :) My husband will thank you generously!!!

  44. I’m in WV. We are not snowed in, but we certainly have seen more than our share of the white stuff. Sick. Of. It. Seriously!

  45. I’m in Baltimore aka Snowpocalypse Central.

  46. Nate's Mom says:

My hair is so sad at this time that I would consider travel from outside DC to Alabama just to get a decent haircut. If I could ever get a snow plow, that is… This is a good test for our old deck. If it can take the weight of all this snow, we’re good!

    Love your blog!!

    Nate’s Mom

  47. you were so kind to ask us about our snow, because, WOW, it is unreal here. I’m glad you got a taste of it today. But yes, it is bizarre to see that much snow where I live. I went to college on the east coast and used to giggle at the Californians and Floridians staring in wonder at the snow falling at the place they actually lived. And now I’m wondering why my yard has more snow than the Olympic host city. It is unheard of.
    Hope y’all had fun too!

  48. Yep. Casey James. Oh yes ma’am.

(Also, have you heard the darling little Janell Wheeler–so talented–is Tim Tebow’s girlfriend? Because that makes me like her even more.)

  49. Love your blog! We just moved to Maryland from Texas, so we have had a bit of culture shock this winter. I have some pictures posted on my blog:
