On The Fly

Hello!

How are you!

I am fine!

But somewhat manic!

It’s just been one of those days. Family and work and errands and supper and church and deadlines and emails and last but not least, SO MUCH UNWATCHED TV ON THE DVR THAT IT MAKES ME ANXIOUS.

WHAT IF I NEVER CATCH UP?

I haven’t even watched the Rachel Zoe season finale yet. And I know it was, like, SO MAJOR. And I bet she LITERALLY DIED nine or maybe even twelve times. I also bet that there was some dress that didn’t get to her studio on time and it was A TOTAL NIGHTMARE.

Anyway, this has also been one of those days when I’ve had a bunch (“a bunch” being a very relative term) of ideas for blog posts I’d like to write, but do you know what? I’m not going to write them. It’s not that I don’t want to. It’s just that I’ll know that I’ll never get around to it. I’ll write a paragraph or two and get distracted by a football game, or I’ll write a sentence and decide that I need to go to Walgreens, or I’ll write three-quarters of it and decide that it’s garbage.

This is why there are currently – hold on. let me check. – EIGHTY THREE partial posts in my drafts folder.

Apparently I have some issues with finishing things.

Anyway, here’s a list of the stuff I thought about today. In no particular order, mind you. I’m just going to put the list out there so that I can get back to the important business of catching up on “Survivor” as well as the 16 unwatched episodes of “House Hunters” that are currently on my DVR.

Here we go:

1) There are no realistic married couples on TV (at least not on the shows that I watch) except for Eric and Tami Taylor on “Friday Night Lights.”

2) When I look at a church’s website and see that the pastor is featured more prominently than anything else, it makes me uneasy. And maybe a little judge-y. Which is another good reason not to write a post about it.

3) Today I bought a $25 Groupon for $55 of “hair services” at a local salon. It made me so happy that you would’ve thought that I’d won the lottery (however, if I had won the lottery, I’m guessing that THE BAPTISTS WOULD HAVE SOME ISSUES WITH ME).

4) I’m getting my hair cut Monday, and once again I’m filled with blind optimism that this haircut will be The One. It’s been three years since I’ve had a cut that I loved. I think it’s time.

5) I don’t understand how people learn to pair certain foods with certain wines. There was a whole episode of “Top Chef” about this very skill, and I kept thinking that if I were in that competition I’d serve my food and then ask people if they wanted sweet tea or diet Coke. Because as far as I can tell they’re good with everything. You may have picked up on the fact that I’m very sophisticated.

6) Tonight at church I heard a sweet woman telling a joke about her husband’s gift of discernment, and I wondered how many times a day people (okay. Baptists.) use spiritual gifts as a punchline. WE’RE SO WACKY.

7) “Like Incense” by Brooke Fraser Ligertwood is a gorgeous song. GORGEOUS. The second verse makes me teary-eyed. A chorus by Rich Mullins never hurts.

8) My sister-in-law and nephew got home from Uganda yesterday. They met all four of their Compassion kids, and I can’t wait to share some of their stories with you. A couple of nights ago I looked at my nephew’s pictures on Facebook and just bawled. The kids’ smiles were like pure sunshine.

9) My hoop earrings with multi-colored beads are hands-down the best accessory I have ever owned. Sometimes I think about what my life would be like without them, and it makes me sad. In a completely superficial way, of course.

All right. I’m all better now. Might even be able to sleep now that I’ve set the crazy free.

Thank you and by all means have a lovely Thursday,
Me

  1. 2) i’m the same way!

    4) sadly, at age almost-halfway-to-40, i think i’m giving up on finding a hairstyle that’s “the one”. dang naturally curly, wild hair! it’s impossible to style. or maybe just impossible to make me happy. :0)

    7) brooke fraser’s voice is per-fec-tion! like super-human good. love her!

  2. You mean sweet tea doesn’t go with everything? I thought for sure it did.

  3. I agree, Eric and Tammy are hands-down my favorite married couple on tv. Are you watching Parenthood? Those couples are pretty realistic. Funny, too.

  4. Lynnette R says:

I hear you on that whole pastor on the church website thing. Or any of the church’s promotional media for that matter. Speaks volumes. And I feel your haircut pain. I always think I am just a haircut away from loving my hair. Why is hair perfection so hard to achieve?

  5. Julie Schaal says:

Oh I beg to differ…the mom and dad on The Middle are classic in that lovable slacker parent kind of way :) I am always on the hunt for the next fave accessory (i.e. your hoops)should I have to flee the house during a fire and only grab the kids :)leaving behind my fave necklace and earrings that literally go with EVERYTHING! Kudos on the Groupon!

  6. 83?! That’s phenomenal!!

  7. 1) That is because there are no longer fine television dramas like Dynasty or Dallas gracing our airwaves. I mean, whatever happened to couples like Blake & Krystle Carrington or Pam & Bobby Ewing?
    2) I agree. Sort of strange. I guess I figure Jesus should really be the most important figure on the site. But call me crazy.
    Also:
**I think you need to take a day solely for the purpose of House Hunters viewing. I could easily spend an entire day viewing House Hunters.

  8. 1. Couldn’t agree more… I LOVE Eric and Tammy! I read an interview where they were reflecting on their time on FNL (after filming the 5th and final season) and the fact that they got to be a realistic couple was key to their performances (and subsequent Emmy nominations).

    2. PREACH IT SISTER. I could go on and on. My office looks down over Six Flags over Jesus and I drive around in a town that has the faces of 2 pastors all over it. My biggest issue is that I’m of the school of thought that the church is the PEOPLE, not a building and certainly not a single person with a great propensity to fall… I just think it sends the wrong message.

  9. You crack me up :)

  10. Rich Mullins is on my playlist right now. Yes, always good.

I want to see pictures of the bead/hoop earrings.

And, I bet I have more unfinished posts saved in the draft folder than those I have actually posted.

  11. The RZ finale made me feel sad. I comfort-ate enough for both Rachel and myself, which is probably how she prefers it.

I covet those earrings of yours every time I see them.

Confessing it doesn’t make me any less covetous, but now you know. ;-)

  12. As a fellow Baptist, No. 3 made laugh out loud!

  13. I would love to see a picture of your hoop earrings. You’ve probably shown them before and I probably missed it. Have a great day!

  14. Hearing Rich Mullins lyrics takes me back to high school when I did wild things like listen to praise music. That song is beautiful!

  15. A. I am Baptist, and I often use spiritual gifts as punchlines. It is oh-so-funny. To me. And my Baptist friends. :)

    B. Oh my goodness, I am ALREADY BEHIND in the TV watching. And this is just WEEK 1!!! So, I feel your TV pain.

  16. How interesting you also have blog posts which never are – posted that is. Bless bless bless your sister in law and nephew. Spiritual gifts – ah the vast array of jokes we can make about them – and how terrific we all have some gift to share. I was raised Baptist – now bible church and feel quite comfy about the lottery – relieving that guilt has been – well freeing of some of my crazies. Pairing a wine with food is hard when one makes chicken fried steak – which flavor do you pair? The fried or the chicken? I too suffer from crazies – at my age we call it “eccentricity” – used to be called crazy but we are very politically correct now (NOT!) love you Sophie – when you don’t make me smile you make me cry – love that about you

  17. Set the crazy free! Bwhahahaha!

That, in a sentence, is why most of us blog.

  18. If you had thrown in a casserole recipe, you could have named this “The Day I Made Fun of The Baptists, But In A Good Way And With Ritz Crackers On Top.”

#’s 3 and 6 made me laugh out loud.

  19. I rarely comment, but I read you every day, and I love how your mind works. Just telling ya! :)

Eric and Tammy–healthy relationship. I totally agree. I think that Adam and Kristina from Parenthood show a realistic marriage, too.

I’m always confused about wine, too, but we have friends who own a vintage wines shop, so my hubby always brings home the perfect pairing for our special meals when we have wine. Then I have a heart attack because of how much the wine costs and realize THAT is why I have no clue about pairings. I don’t think $3 bottles of wine pair with much of anything. :)

Thank you for making me laugh today.

  20. #6 – I grew up Baptist (now attending a Church of God. Walking on the wild side!) and we often say that my dad has the “spiritual gift of procrastination”. Sadly, I inherited. it. LOL

  21. i commented somewhere today that i lack the spiritual gift of SHUT UP.

i used to pair all kinds of wine with all kinds of food. or not. (i’ll be four years sober in november. that’s just how ‘sophisticated’ *i* am.)

i’m uncomfortable when the website of a ‘church’ is actually the pastor’s name. i mean…really?

    really?

and, it’s true. why are we just so dang weird as christians sometimes? ugh. it’s not about rules here, people. re-la-tion-ship.

p.s. i missed the last episode, too. i die.

    xo

  22. p.s. i decided i have a few more very important things to say.

one being, is it really true that eric and tammy are a real-life couple, too!?

are your earrings gaudy? i hope so. i need some big gaudy gypsy-ish earrings in my life. stat.

i’m going start creating a draft folder. that is such a great idea. because one never knows when i might have a very important nugget of wisdom that might change someone’s life that i will want to have at the ready. thanks for the idea.

    xo

  23. I have been bored with my earrings lately, and feel fairly certain we need to see pictures of the hoops. And perhaps where you purchased them?

  24. what exactly is the “gift of discernment”? this Lutheran just doesn’t quite get it. I totally get the hair cut issue though.

  25. Set the crazy free – I LOVE IT!

Add being doubly hopped up on some Starbuck’s and sleep deprived and it may be “the perfect storm”. : )

P.S. You’ve got to love the Groupon!

  26. Have I ever told you that I can watch a DVR’d episode of House Hunters in eight minutes flat? I know EXACTLY where to fast forward, and which house recaps I do NOT need to see. I can sail right through them. This is a life skill that is…well, mostly useless, actually.

  27. I really laughed out loud (and I’m at work) regarding your comment about the wine parings and Diet Coke. I’m right there with you!
