Let’s Get Ready To Ramble

After the madness that was last Monday, the rest of last week was super uneventful. I didn’t lock anyone else out of the house. I wasn’t awakened in the middle of the night by a dog. I didn’t have to look for anyone’s keys.

It was business as usual, really. Some work. Some time at the library. Some grocery shopping. Some clothes shopping because we were going to a 6 pm wedding Saturday night and it was sort of a dress-up deal and I didn’t really think I could wear my yoga pants and my favorite Mississippi State sweatshirt, though BELIEVE YOU ME, if I could’ve, I would’ve. As it turned out, though, I found a sequin-y tank top for the wedding that I wore with some leather shorts and knee-high boots. It was absolutely perfect except for the fact that OH, I WOULD NEVER.

I actually wore the sequin-y tank top underneath this black assymetrical cardigan-type get-up and some flow-y black pants. And apparently I’ve been around my mother-in-law too long because I can’t seem to stop making new adjectives by adding a -y.

It’s a very Martha-y habit.

This weekend was chock-full-o-activity, which seems to be the theme of Fall 2010. Friday night I was at church until late thirty (MUCH LIKE I WAS IN MY 20s), so Saturday morning seemed to arrive a little earlier than normal. We visited with some friends who’d spent the night with us, and then we packed up and headed to our hometown so that we could go to my cousin’s wedding. Normally I like to pack for a trip the night before, but since I wasn’t home Friday night, I was packing on the fly Saturday morning. It threw me completely off of my packing game, and when we got to my parents’ house I realized that I’d neglected to pack about a third of the stuff that we needed. We managed just fine, though – Alex wore jeans to the wedding, I used Mama’s hair products, and Alex discovered that if he’s in a socks-related pinch, my socks will do just fine.

A few other observations from the weekend:

1) The last time I ate at Macaroni Grill was about five years ago. I have fond memories of their grilled chicken Caesar salad and especially fond memories of that bread they used to put on the table before the meal. We decided to break our Chuy’s stronghold and grab lunch at Macaroni Grill before we hit the road Saturday, and SWEET MERCY it was some overpriced mediocrity (and I mean that in the nicest possible way). The salad wasn’t nearly as good as I remembered (no more green beans!), and the bread was totally different. Our hopes were so high, but we were underwhelmed.

[insert sad trombone here]

2) The wedding was beautiful, and I am happy to announce that the little man seems to have inherited his mama’s love of the dance floor when there’s live music at a family gathering. He and my cousin Paige’s little boy BROKE IT DOWN for about three hours at the wedding reception, and we had a big time coming up with some new and inventive spin moves. It was delightful.

3) I’m still desperately behind on television – I’ve only seen one episode of “The Office” this season, two episodes of “30 Rock” and one episode of “Survivor.” I’m incredibly disappointed by my lack of committment, and I don’t even have a good reason why I haven’t been able to maintain my normal television pace. I’ve been eating well, I’ve been stretching beforehand, I’m surrounded by a strong team of dedicated television enthusiasts – but for whatever reason I’m having an off season. I’m still hanging in there with the Bravo, but that’s hardly a stellar accomplishment. It’s as much co-dependency as anything else.

4) For the first time since Melanie and I have known each other, both of our football teams are ranked. My Bulldogs are #17, and her Aggies are #23 in the AP poll. Needless to say, we’re just beside ourselves. And when I saw the rankings this afternoon, I sent Mel a text that said, “Both our teams are ranked!”

And then, just so she knew that I hadn’t fallen into unbridled enthusiasm territory (unbridled enthusiasm is COMPLETELY OFF-LIMITS for long-suffering Bulldogs and Aggies), I quickly sent a follow-up text: “I’m waiting for the sun to fall from the sky.”

Even still, we’re just as tickled as we can be.

Happy Monday, y’all.

  1. Dear Un-curbed enthusiasm,
I almost died of coffee axphyxiation when you described what you found to wear to the wedding… oh, girl! You had me at leather shorts!

Other than that, it was good to get the news from BooMama-y land complete with current events, entertainment digest and sports!

    Love,
Will Tune-in Again Soon in NE

  2. You need to catch up on the office. There has been some serious funny-ness going on this season. Not sure that’s a word, but oh well.

  3. Sequins? Leather shorts? Knee-high boots? Oh my!! I am still giggling!

And in reference to your post about Martha, the keys, and gaining weight…I made my husband read it that same night and he laughed almost as much as me.

Side note…On facebook, you may have seen the status going around at the end of October saying to change your status every day of November to something you are thankful for…and well, you were one of my “things” this week. I am thankful for your posts, (aka your endless supply of laughter-worthy material) and also because we are blogger “friends.” So, now you know.

    :) Happy week to you!

  4. Catch up with “The Office” first. You will be so glad that you did.
(And PS: You should yell “GOTCHA” after that leather shorts/knee high boots line. Cause you totally did.)
    Macaroni Rosemary Bread: RIP

  5. Sophie you really make me smile and laugh at times with the way you describe things. Beautiful word pictures. I am guessing that you went to Secret Church on Friday night???We came down once about three years ago…loved it, did have a hard time staying fully focused after midnight..but it was so worth the effort. David Platt is a young man being use mightily of and for the Lord. Blessings on your week..may it be a smooth one.

  6. Even during the A&M game Saturday, I kept thinking to myself…don’t blow it….don’t choke. I reserved the right to be excited until the end, but then very excited I was.

  7. Rambling is one of my favorite kinds of posts, sorta like drivel but with more meaning. I am so happy for your bulldogs but I hate to remind you that my HOGS are gonna rain on your Thanksgiving parade. I am meanwhile rooting for your Bulldogs and Melanie’s Aggies (we already rained on them)cause there is nothing more fun that Saturday football.

  8. I’m behind on my teevee too! We’re TV slacking soul sisters. And Macaroni Grill – meh. I have big problems with a place that wants to give me oil instead of butter. I like my fats solid, puh-lease.

  9. Had the same Macaroni Grill experience this weekend. We have neither a MG or Chuy’s in our town, so while visiting Tha Big City, we obviously chose poorly by going to MG. Our sorrow has led us to repentance, and we can only hope that Chuy’s will still have us after such betrayal.

  10. Thank you. Thank you, thank you, thank you. We actually had an upcoming trip to Macaroni Grill planned. I had not been in several years and was having a craving. But it is gone now. I so appreciate your public service announcement. It has saved us several dollars! LOVE you, Boomama!

  11. susan self says:

Sophie, Congrats on your team for being ranked. Our awesome LSU Tigers are ranked #5 thanks to that huge win over Bama. GEAUX TIGERS!!!!

  12. Although there seems to be a little something-something going on between AU and MSU. Something about our QB :0 I soooooo wishing you a victory on Sat ! I am still proud to be sittin’ #2. WAR EAGLE

  13. Sarah Kate in WA state says:

Clearly, I’ve been spending way too much time on facebook, because my fingers kept twitching to hit the “like” button after each little update you gave on your weekend! :) Sequin-y tank/leather shorts….”like”. Desperately behind on this season’s TV shows….”like”. (I feel your pain!)

  14. I thought of you when I wrote my post today about Dave Barnes and his Christmas cd…I know you love him as much as I do :) It is SO good by the way!

  15. We are HUGE lovers of The Office, but last week’s episode… hmmmm… not so much. They were poking fun at Christianity a leeeetle bit too much for my comfort levels. It makes me sad, man. :(

And would you mind praying for our Iron Bowl, pretty please (just kidding.. kinda)? I know Bama is blood thirsty now and I’m all kinds of nervous. haha! War Eagle, baby!

So glad your Bulldogs are ranked, girlfriend!

  16. We don’t have Steinmarts in WA (to my knowledge), but today I saw a commercial for one and my first thought was “Oh, that’s where Martha loves to shop!” LOL

  17. Delurking to say that Macaroni Grill has changed their recipes. Their portion sizes are smaller too. Order a desert and see how much smaller it is The Lemon Passion is almost half the size it used to be). My cousin and I went there one night because we were craving spaghetti and meatballs. We sat down and saw the menus said “All new recipes!” on it. We were crushed. The waiter told us “oh no …they are better now.” No they weren’t. We almost got up and left when we read that. When the bread came out we were so disappointed. So they haved changed lots of things. I loved it the way it was. The new formulations are smaller (and of course cheaper for them) but the food is not as good.

p.s. hi! I like your blog! You make me smile.
