I loved, adored and treasured The Help when I read it a couple of years ago.
And while I’m normally wary when someone makes a movie based on a book I love, I cannot wait for this one.
Aibilene was my favorite character in the book. It looks like the same will be true for the movie.
Also: that pink tile that’s in the bathroom with the toile wallpaper? IT IS MY HERITAGE. It seemed like everybody had that pink tile in their house when I was growing up. We didn’t have it in my house, though; Mama picked out sort of a muted turquoise tile for their master bath, and I would give anything to have it in my house right now.
Everything old is new again, I reckon.
The best part of all is that everyone’s Southern accents sound really accurate. Except for maybe Allison Janney’s (it seems a little Shirley-Maclaine-in-Steel–Magnolias-ish). But we will extend her great grace because of The West Wing, not to mention that maybe they were going for more of a Delta-woman-born-in-the-20s sort of sound.
So what about y’all? Have you read the book? Will you see the movie?
loved the book. wary but hopeful in regards to the movie… i will definately see it. i read that the writer of the book’s best friend directed it, and she refused to allow all sorts of big names to even be considered, and that makes me happy. the writer’s best friend is not going to butcher the heart of the book.
Funny you should ask! I just finished the book yesterday and was so sad to finish it!! Such a great read! Can’t wait to see the movie. And the pink tile? Oh, yes, my sweet grandmother had that same pink bathroom. Would give anything to spend another week of summer vacation with her in that house full of precious memories.
Loved the book. Great, subtle writing – especially able to convey an accent without overdoing it. Love the slow, realization that the main character has about what is truly going on around her. Good stuff!
oh. my. word. I have NOT read this book (even though it pops up every time I go to the library website…yes, I often frequent the library website because I am such a nerd that the physical library is not enough for me…don’t judge me) However, after watching the trailer I will most definitely be scooping up the book and standing in line for the movie :) thanks for the clue-in :)
Sophie, I have read it twice, and am gathering a group of girls to go on the 22nd of August! I hate to be exclusive, but I want to go with other girls who actually read the book so that we can all discuss from the same perspective after the movie. Can’t wait to hear what you think after you see it, too! Niki
even my dad loved this book! said it reminded him so much of his ‘missellamae’ – Miss Ellamae was thier HELP and she and her sisters cooked the wedding meal for my parents!
Read the book. LOVED it. Will definitley see the movie. But does anyone beside me feel a bit jaded due to the litigation or whatever going on with the real persons whom the story may or may not have been based????
Oh yes ma’am, I’m going to see it!! And can I just tell you that the pink tile is actually gray with deep red trim in my master bath. LOL! Bulldogs, anyone?? ;D
I tried to read it a couple times. I’m ashamed to say I just couldn’t get past the first few chapters, and I don’t know why! I. do. not. know. why. So – knowing the movie was being released in August, my librarian gf suggested I listen to it on disc on my work commute (which is one hour each way two days per week). I did. I took to going to my car at lunch and eating out there so I could sneak in 30 minutes extra listening time each day! The characters were wonderful and each was narrated by someone different! They did such a great job and really, really bring the book to life. We’ve already scheduled our own girl’s night out when the movie is released. Can’t wait!!
Read the book and CAN NOT WAIT for the movie. From what I’ve seen of previews, the actors look exactly like I pictured the characters.
I loved, loved, loved the book and cried just watching the trailer. I rarely go to the movies, but this is on my must-see list. My mama is from South Carolina and their “help” was like extended family, but I know lots of people didn’t feel the same.
