Attempting To Re-enter The Cinematic Loop

I don’t know about y’all, but after watching Sunday night’s Golden Globe Awards, I’m still experiencing a lingering obsession with Reese Witherspoon’s hair.

Let’s just take a quick look and review. (via)

Screen Shot 2014-01-14 at 8.59.49 PM

I love so many things about it. In fact, I think I will create a numbered list.

1. The color. It’s very blonde, but it doesn’t look yellow or brassy. Somehow it looks natural even though you know good and well that nobody’s hair looks like *that* without some foils entering the equation.

2. The bangs. They are fantastic.

3. The asymmetry. I have had an asymmetrical bob for, like, six years, but Reese makes me want to let my hair grow out (and listen. NOTHING makes me want to let my hair grow out.) and see if I can pull off a longer asymmetrical bob. My main reservation is that her hair looks like it requires a flat iron, and NO THANK YOU, I WILL BURN MYSELF. My secondary reservation is that I like a little pouf and body and curl. But my word that is a fine haircut. I would like to live vicariously through someone who tries it.

Oh! I just remembered another Golden Globes observation. Did anyone else think that Tina Fey looked phenomenal? Because I sure did. I don’t know if she’s doing Pilates or Cross Fit or maybe even The Fluidity Bar (I didn’t order it.) (That doesn’t mean I don’t still think about it every day.), but during the opening segment – when she was wearing that burgundy dress – she looked so lean and toned and fit and gorgeous.

I wasn’t really planning to watch the Golden Globes because I’d only seen a grand total of two of the Golden Globe-nominated movies: Gravity, which I didn’t care for very much, and Despicable Me 2, which I loved. In a fit of procrastination, though, I decided to watch, and since I wasn’t really up-to-speed on the nominated films, I figured I’d just enjoy all the pretty dresses. And see if anyone gave a particularly memorable acceptance speech. And also see what Tina Fey and Amy Pohler had to say (I thought they were hilarious, by the way – and the George Clooney joke about Gravity was my favorite).

I’m not exactly sure why I just shared that very specific piece of information. Let’s just all roll with it and pretend that someone cares.

I think I’ve mentioned this before, but way back in our younger days, David and I used to see ALL the movies; we made a point to see almost everything that was nominated for the bigger awards, and I would actually feel competitive when the GG or the Oscars were on TV because I’d picked my favorites and wanted them to win, by diggity. Now, though, I’ve rarely seen anything that’s nominated, and I don’t feel at all invested in who wins.

Anyway, last year after awards season I decided to watch some of the nominated movies – there were even a couple that I really, really liked – and I think I’ll do the same this year. I’m planning to see Frozen this weekend, and while yes, I know it’s animated and probably won’t be up for a Best Picture Oscar, I really want to buy the soundtrack – and I don’t want the music to tell me the story if I haven’t seen the movie first. That’s why Frozen is first-up on the movie-going agenda.

So here’s my question(s) for all you carefree, easy-breezy people who do fun things like “see lots of movies at the theatre” and “feel informed when it comes to awards season.” What’s worth seeing from this past year? Are there two or three films that you’d recommend seeing before the Oscars get here? I really did enjoy playing a little bit of movie catch-up last year, so I want to make sure I pick some good ones this year, too.

(I also want to have Reese’s hair.)

(Unfortunately, that is not a problem we’ll be able to solve in the comments.)

(If we could, though…oh, if we could….)

  1. Saving Mr. Banks was really good – it’s not a kids movie, but very interesting. I have not seen Mandela – but it’s on my list. And 12 Years a Slave won, right?

  2. Elizabeth J says:

‘Philomena’ is fantastic. So deep and real and lovely.
I LOVED the acting/costumes/hair in ‘American Hustle’ but it was so dang long and the plot was a bit convoluted. But worth seeing!

  3. Sophie, did you read The Book Thief? I thought the movie was great. Not sure if it’s still on. Oh and Saving Mr. Banks may be one of my all-time favorite movies ever.

  4. I just had a baby so unless animated vegetables count, I can’t help you. I’ll watch movies again in 18 years.

  5. I recommend Dallas Buyers Club. I was thoroughly impressed with it.

  6. My older girls loved Frozen, even though it was animated. They are in their 20’s and loved it.

American Hustle – good acting, and i was a child in the 70’s, so you’d think i would like it… not at all. Convoluted story, and characters i couldn’t get invested in. Good or bad guys, didn’t really care at all.

Walter Mitty – some really laugh-out-loud moments, even though it’s not a comedy.

  7. First off, the George Clooney joke was my favorite, too. You shared that specific piece of information because God knew I needed that extra shot of connection today, so just thank you for that. To be boring and analytical, it’s a great joke because it’s clever and it deftly walks that line between being mean and just sharp observational humor.

Reese looked amazing. I want to wear only teal from now on. It would help if I had her body and/or haircut. But alas, no.

Pre-kid, we used to see all the movies, too. With 3 kids, we have seen exactly 1 – Frozen (which you will love). I drove my 9-year-old and her friend across town this weekend, and they quoted dialogue and sang songs from it the whole way. Adorable.

Thanks for another fun post. You always make my day when I have some new Boo Mama to read. BTW, got my signed book for Christmas and LOVED it! Just. Loved. It. Thanks for the work and time you put into your writing to touch hearts and minds and just to put some more silliness and bacon-related thoughts into the world.

  8. Frozen is amazing. And I read today that they’re taking it to Broadway which had literally made my whole week. My girls have seen it 4x. I’ve seen it twice. And the soundtrack is on repeat around here all the time. Idina Menzel is Elsa. +100 points for that alone.
I haven’t seen Saving Mr. Banks yet. But it’s on my to do list for the week.
Walter Mitty is amazing. Ben Stiller is so so so good in it.
I want to see The Lone Survivor but have no desire whatsoevert to see The Wolf of Wall Street. Also want to see August: Osage County & American Hustle, but will probably wait till they are on Apple TV to rent.

  9. I’m with you on the awards, except I didn’t even see Despicable Me, just Gravity. I’m still not sure what I think of it! I loved Reese Witherspoon’s hair, Kayley Cuoco’s dess, and that George Clooney joke! My favorite speech was Matthew McConaughey’s, love love love my fellow Texan!

  10. Saving Mr. Banks and Nebraska … 2 thumbs up for both

  11. I guess I would qualify for that “carefree, easy-breezy” type so I would recommend “philomena” (such a good conversation about faith!!), “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” (who doesn’t love adventure for an underdog?!), “Saving Mr. Banks” (I can’t even. Oh my. So good.). Those are the most recent ones. I also really enjoyed “About Time”, “Austenland” (won’t be nominated but fun and cute!), “Captain Phillips” (makes sure you take the Tums with you, it’s nerve-wracking) and, well I only saw 75% of it but I think “Mud” woulda led me to love it too. Definitely see “Philomena” and “Saving Mr. Banks” if you don’t catch any others!
I am sure you wanted a book, so there ya have it!

  12. Saving Mr Banks… THE best movie I have seen in years. Before seeing it, I thought, why would I possibly need to know the back story behind Mary Poppins, and HOW could that possibly make for a good movie!? Well, I had to see it to believe it was as good as I’d heard, and it did not disappoint. Even after seeing it 3 weeks ago, I still can be heard breaking out into a spontaneous, albeit off key, version of Let’s Go Fly A Kite…

  13. Everything comes out a few months later here. So I am dying to see Mr. Banks. We did just see Walter Mitty. It was a pleasant surprise. We picked it because it was the only English movie playing and we hadn’t seen a movie in ages. But it was really good- great scenery, which my husband loves, sweet story, and a good lesson to take with you!

We’ll have to wait and hope that some of the other good ones come out here!

And yes, Reese and her hair are adorable. I just love her. Although I have to keep telling myself, that if I had professionals working on my hair, makeup, and wardrobe for hours, I might come out looking cute, too!

  14. I generally don’t see “serious” movies, in the same that I don’t read “serious” books. I am looking for entertainment and nothing else!

I did see Savings Mr. Banks and LOVED it, so I totally recommend that. I also want to see August: Osage County because, well,. Meryl Streep.

  15. American Hustle was just okay, nothing special. I wanted to see Wolf of Wall Street until I heard how crude it is and crude apparently doesn’t even begin to describe it. I saw Lone Survivor yesterday. There are scenes in it that I couldn’t watch… had to cover my eyes, but it’s so worth it to see and be reminded what our soldiers are doing and have done for our freedom. Philomena is next on my list. I missed Captain Phillips and am looking forward to seeing it when released as dvd. Gravity got so boring!

  16. Beth Wittenbach says:

I know this isn’t going to be nominated, but “The Way Way Back” HAS to be on your list of must see movies from last year. I loved it!

  17. You will love Frozen!
    Saving Mr. Banks was excellent.
Saw Lone Survivor last night…..no words other than God bless our troops and their families.
    GUT wrenching/excellent.

  18. The list of movie’s I’ve seen and you MUST see are in this order:
    1. Philomena. I loved it. I’m adopted and the story resonated with me (although I wasn’t stolen from my birth mom). It’s a story about faith. The book is also phenomenal. Read the book first.
    2. The Book Thief – loved this also. My daughter and I did both Philomena and The Book Thief on the same day – movie marathon. Both were so great. Reading the book now.
    3. American Hustle – long – story sort of dragged on and on, but who doesn’t love Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence?
    4. Saving Mr. Banks – my family saw this together and we loved it. Who knew the back story of how Mary Poppins came to the big screen??? WOW!
    5. Lone Survivor – my husband and I saw this Sunday after saying goodbye to our college aged daughter going back to school. WOW. We both read the book and the movie was riveting. I cried and cried! Beautiful story. God bless our troops.
    6. Osage County – this is on my list to see this weekend…..

YES – go see all these movies. Philomena first…. you must must must see that!!!!!!!

    • Oh and yes – I forgot I saw the Dallas Buyers Club around Thanksgiving. It was riveting also. Hunka Hunka burnin love Matthew does an incredible job, so does Jared Leto. I completely agree with the Golden Globes awarding both of them the awards for best acting.

  19. Jennifer S says:

The only movie I’ve seen recently is Saving Mr. Banks and it was wonderful. I HIGHLY recommend it. My husband loved it as well. If you are at all a Mary Poppins fan it’s a must see!

  20. I am clueless when it comes to what movies were nominated and in my past experience, I have very different tastes than the people picking the nominees and the winners. Here are my top picks as of late:
“Frozen”-LOVED it, one of the few movies I will see more than once IN the theater mainly because the wait for it to come to DVD will kill me. It was so old school Disney, with the musical numbers, the adorable loveable characters, the puns and clever dialogue, and the hilarious sidekicks. Think “Little Mermaid”….kind of.
“Captain Phillips”-I went into this with no expectations but came out absolutely singing it’s praises. Wow, wow, wow, so intense and Tom Hanks once again proved that he is one of the finest actors of our time.
“Lone Survivor”-haven’t actually seen it yet, am going on Saturday, but have anxiously been awaiting the movie since I read the book a couple years ago. And I have no doubt that the movie is going to be incredible.

  21. Being tight-wads, we usually wait until the movies are at the dollar theater, unless there is a special occasion. Not being in the loop with what was nominated, and basing my answer solely on what others are saying, I will assume that those were nominated? We did see Despicable Me 2 and absolutely loved it. Frozen was fantastic; we love Olaf the snowman. Saving Mr. Banks was wonderful as well. We sort of assumed it was somewhat of a kids movie, but were wrong. However, ours (ages 12 – 17) really enjoyed it and they got it. Of course, I think I cried during the aforementioned ones as well.

Regarding Reese’s bangs – definitely a razor cut. The bangs only though. This gives a nice, wispy look.

  22. Frozen just delighted me (and my children, including Zack!) . . . please watch the video of Jayci singing “let it go” – seriously, it’s perfection (I realize I’m biased) – also, I liked Saving Mr Banks a lot too!

  23. Oh and the Way Way Back – see that if you havent :-) I love it.

  24. 1. Philomena – Absolute FAVORITE. Loved it. On my favorite movie list of all time for sure. When I saw the preview for the first time, I bawled and my husband gave me that look–“I can’t take you anywhere.”
    2. Nebraska – This is a much quieter and less intense movie than many nominated, but I loved it. I thought it was a really sweet story and besides one F-bomb, I have no idea why it’s rated R.
    3. Saving Mr. Banks – GREAT. It is funny and sad and perfect.
    4. Frozen – Duh. Excellent. This was the husband fave.
    5. 12 Years a Slave – Really good. I thought it was a little long and a little slow, but probably mostly because it’s hard to watch that much suffering, but the movie is important.
    6. Captain Phillips – Very intense and fantastic performance by Tom Hanks and Barkhad Abdi.
    7. Enough Said – Sweet and funny and sad performances by Julia Louis-Dreyfuss and James Gandolfini. I loved them together.
    8. Blue Jasmine – Funny and sad and quirky. I liked it a lot.
    9. Her – I thought it was sad and thought provoking. It’s a beautiful movie too. The style of the sets and camera work is great.
    10. American Hustle – Jennifer Lawrence is great, as is Christian Bale and Bradley Cooper. I didn’t like Amy Adams’ character as much and I felt the movie was long and a little convoluted (like others have said). The hair and costumes are great.

Have not seen: The Wolf of Wall Street (sure don’t plan to based on the vulgarity), Dallas Buyer’s Club (missed it while it was here, plan to see it when it comes out on DVD), August: Osage County (plan to see it this weekend), Inside Llewyn Davis (isn’t here yet, hopefully will be by the time the Oscars air so I can see it), All is Lost (missed it while it was here, plan to see it when it comes out on DVD), Rush (missed it while it was here, plan to see it when it comes out on DVD), Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom (this may be a Redbox-er).

I have two small kids and my “me time” is going to movies by myself after they’re in bed. I’m a night owl. I love it.

  25. Rachel M. says:

My husband and I used to watch all of the movies pre-kids. I’ve never even heard of Philomena that everyone seems to be raving about, so obviously, we’ve fallen way behind the times.
We did, however, see Frozen and Saving Mr. Banks and LOVED them both.
The Book Thief is one of my favorite books ever so I will be watching that movie as soon as it hits the Red Box.

  26. Funny you mentioned burning yourself with a flatiron. I have been straightening my curls lately and burned myself for the first time this past weekend. Funny, but it didn’t start hurting until today! It had a 3 day delay.

  27. Brittney K says:

My husband and I saw American Hustle a few weeks ago. I was not that impressed honestly. I LOVED the cast, and the dress, and the hair. But it was over 2 hrs long and so many people you had to keep up with. Most entertaining was Jennifer Lawrence. The girl deserved that supporting actress award.

  28. My first comment on your blog–wow! I’ve been reading for a while now, and I just have to say thanks for being so much fun. Your blog is truly delightful. Here are a few comments on movies…..
–Frozen: Amazing–like seeing a broadway production in animated form. My whole family loved it!
–Saving Mr. Banks: One of the best movies I’ve seen in a while.
–The Book Thief: Beautiful, but I would highly recommend reading the book first. I would put this book up there among the best I’ve ever read. The story and the characters draw you in and stay in your mind well after you’ve put the book down.
–Osage County: I only made it through about 30 minutes. The language was just too much for me.
–The Wolf of Wallstreet: I didn’t see this, but my husband heard a lot about it at work. Everyone he talked to agreed that the R rating wasn’t strong enough. Many (who aren’t usually shocked or bothered by the content of the movies and tv they watch) thought that this movie was just way too graphic.

That’s all I’ve got, but I hope it helps some. Thanks again for being so fun and genuine and encouraging!

  29. I haven’t seen them, but I’ve heard from others that they’re worth the price of admission (or now, in my case–price of a rental or netflix download by the time I finally get around to it):

    Savings Mr. Banks
    12 Years a Slave
    American Hustle
Captain Phillips (I’m sort of partial to this as many of the Somali actors are from MN–my home state. Their stories about being picked for the movie with little to no acting experience? Makes me smile from ear to ear. Buzz on the street is that Mr Abdi, who plays the “head pirate” will likely be up for an Oscar. Can you believe it?!? AMAZING!)

    • anotherlisa says:

i liked the acting of the pirates; you were invested in them, even though they were “bad guys”. very multi-dimensional and talented.

  30. Here you go, Sophie;

    Saving Mr. Banks

Walter Mitty / Your husband will like this one a lot, and you’ll enjoy it too. Very cool, modern vibe, with great graphics. And, refreshingly, it’s rated PG so it actually won’t leave you with ear burn (I hear that the Wolf of Wall Street has 550 you know what words — at least that’s what Tina Fey said at the Globes!).

    Have a good day!

    • anotherlisa says:

wall street journal had a count of 706 words…
definitely not an R rating, but Leo has some sway with the powers that be

  31. Well, I read through all of the comments and I have to concur with most of them. We usually don’t go to many movies through the year but somehow we ended up at the theater a LOT over the Christmas/New Year Break and I loved it! You must see Frozen – of course – it is just wonderful. Saving Mr. Banks was amazing. I loved every second. Really beautiful movie. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty was a surprisingly good movie and also clean, which I really appreciate. Then, because I have teenage boys, I sat through the Thor movie. You can watch it on Redbox! :)

  32. Frozen- awesome. I took my daughter to see it again Monday!! My favorite Disney movie ever.

American Hustle- slow, but good. My hubs and I agreed that all of the story had to be told.

Wolf of Wall Street- great movie- lots of the f-word (like 500 times, saw an article where it’d been counted). And lots of naked girls- I think that the same effect could’ve been achieved w lingerie, but everybody’s naked. However, Leo does a scene mid-movie that had us DYING laughing- I wanted to yell “Burger Barn!! It’s the Burger Barn Gilbert!!!” It was SO “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape?”.

And Reese’s hair- fantastic color, great bangs, I just prefer the ends to curl under JUST a schosh.

    • Beth Hall says:

I loved that scene in Wolf of Wall Street as well; possibly one of the best directed, choreographed, well acted scenes I have EVER seen in a movie. It should be seen if you are into film as an art form; or are a Scorsese fan. However, the movie is quite vulgar and obscene so that is going to turn a lot of people off.

  33. I really enjoyed “American Hustle”. The story line was great and it full of lots of humor which was a bit of a surprise.

I just saw “Lone Survivor” over the weekend and I would highly recommend it. It was both heart wrenching and pride inspiring. There was quite a bit of violence (shooting) but no torture (which I was so thankful for). I feel like it’s a great eye opener for those of us with no military experience.

  34. Dawn Becker says:

Is it okay if I suggest a movie NOT to see? My hubby and I went to The Wolf of Wall Street. Oh my dirty-ness. So naughty. So raunchy. So vulgar. So icky. I wanted to spray Lysol in my eyes and maybe even squirt a little in my ears??? I love movies and I have been to gobzillions of movies, but for the FIRST TIME EVER we walked out of a movie. I just couldn’t stand one more effenheimer or one more naked person. So many things I can’t unsee. Yuck.

    Captain Phillips was great!

And Frozen was absolutely delightful! So good. I took my 8, 5, and 3 year olds and we all enjoyed it so much.

    • Becky in 'Bama says:

Dawn: the movie walk-out I’ve done once in my life (won’t mention the movie, because these days it would be considered nothing), but once upon a time (recently) I left the theater, found the manager and asked for a refund – the movie was HORRIBLE and there were no previews available on line (opening night). After the movie was over I understood why no previews – it was just awful. I didn’t get cash, but I got two free movie passes.

    • We also walked out of Wold of Wall Street. Absolutely disgusting. I felt so dirty. Awful!

  35. American Hustle and the Wolf of Wall Street are both based on true stories, which makes them a bit more interesting/ albeit disturbing. I liked American Hustle and thought the acting was wonderful. It had some really funny moments, and I loved the whole 70’s vibe. Wolf of Wall Street is over the top gross, but there is a moral to the story that delves into the lenghths many will go for money.

In both cases, it made me very aware of the Con -artist within our society. Be aware folks, be very aware. In my job I have dealt with a few. They are always nice, charming and in our part of world typically cloaked in Christianity- all to make you let your guard down.

  36. Kathy Wilshire says:

I really liked Captain Phillips….Even though you know he makes it because he wrote a book about it that the movie is based on, I was on the edge of my seat the whole time he was a hostage.
I also really liked Walter Mitty….Funny, sweet, and barely any bad language…
American Hustle seems to be one of those movies some people love and others are sort of “eh…”I loved the ’70’s music, cars, decor, clothes. Language is TERRIBLE! My husband really liked it though. Also saw Anchorman 2…don’t recommend it…REALLY dumb.

  37. I have four kids (16, 12, 5 & 3). There aren’t a lot of movies we can all see together and all really enjoy, but we LOVED Frozen. The kiddos have all seen it twice, and my youngest, Liza, now only answers to “Elsa”. One word of advice, take tissues. You have a sister; therefore, you will cry.

My husband and I also really enjoyed Prisoners. It’s disturbing, but good.

  38. Saving Mr. Banks was very good. I loved Frozen as well.

  39. I don’t have the opportunity to see many non-animated non-child friendly movies these days. But I must say that Frozen is, in my humble opinion, the best Disney movie since the Lion King and Aladdin. You must must must see it and in the theater for the first time.

  40. Rachael b says:

I rarely go to the movies, who can afford it? I never know (or care) who is nominated for what. My parents on the other hand. They go almost once a week and are good about taking our kids to see the children’s movies. I am greatful for that!

  41. We see a fair number of movies. Walter Mitty was pretty good, but Saving Mr. Banks is one of the best movies I’ve seen in a long time. That is one you really should see. It’s well cast, finely acted, and a wonderful story.

  42. Here’s my take on Reese….at one time, I adored her….just thought she was cute as a button, etc……but after her and her husband’s arrest, his for DUI, hers for being drunk and stupid…not really but I forget exactly what her charge was…I know she was totally offended that they were arresting her husband which totally offended me…..and she throws out to the officers “do you know who I am?”….well, the Reese I loved and thought I knew…ha, ha….was no more….most likely never was……so she’s not my favorite any more…whether it’s her hair, her dress, her movies, etc….I’m going to stay clear of her……she let me down!!….ha, ha….and I realize this whole paragraph makes me seem crazy but it’s just the truth of how I’m feeling!!!!

  43. I must be the only one who didn’t care for Philomena! The trailer seemed misleading to me. It seemed funny and heart warming, but really it was sad…. And I wasn’t expecting that. Was The Hobbit nominated for anything? I loved it. it is much better than the first one. If you are a Mary Poppins fan, you will love Saving Mr. Banks. My teenage boys even loved it!

  44. Frozen is easily one of the best movies of 2014 and is destined to be an official Disney Classic. I took my 2-year-old to see it. It was her second movie (Despicable Me 2 was her first), but the first one she sat all the way through. She even started singing “Let it Go” in the car on the way home, and continues to sing it. It’s a must-see :)

  45. I have only gone to see one movie in the last 5-6 months. Hubs, kiddos, and I went to see Frozen over the holidays. LOVED it!! So good! BTW, my “kiddos” are son – age 32, daughter and DIL – age 30. We had a blast! It has great humor in it! Love this post!!

  46. Frozen was great! We went as three generations (my in-laws took us all) and there was something exciting for us all. My two year old daughter was captivated and danced during all the songs. I find myself still singing “Let It Go” and even considered downloading it from iTunes. I haven’t bought a Disney soundtrack since Aladdin!
I hope you enjoy it as much as we did!

  47. Go see:
Saving Mr. Banks & The Book Thief ~ Both very good movies

Before you lay down hard earned cash to see some of the other choices out there, I suggest going to Focus On the Family’s website: pluggedin.com to check out what the content of some of those movies might be. You may be already familiar with it. If not, check it out for reviews of movies (and more) that go into detail of what you will see in terms of positive elements and not so positive like violence, drug/alcohol, sex, profanity, etc . I don’t care to be bombarded with foul language and nudity so I find that resource very helpful for our family.

  48. Frozen is sooooooooo very good!
I really liked The Secret Life of Walter Mitty … very unique

  49. For those of you considering seeing August: Osage County this weekend, a warning. Be prepared. The language was shocking, even to my fifty year old, been around the block a time or two, ears. I found the movie to be disturbing. Without giving the story away, every relationship was destroyed by the end. That’s all she wrote; exit stage left. I wasn’t prepared for that. I left the theater wondering “what did I just see, and why?” I was glad I followed my instinct and went alone.

Gravity? No. Claustrophobic. Need I say more?
Philomena? Yes. Based on a true story, and heroine, Philomena, is still alive to comment. Saving Mr. Banks? Yes. It’s one to buy and watch at again and again at home.
Frozen? My twenty-one year old, college junior, son loved it. Saw it twice. Paid for it with his own money. A higher recommendation I cannot give…

  50. I love Tina and Amy, they are hilarious! Every time I think of the George Clooney joke, I chuckle.:) I think it would be amazing to go out with those two women. My stomach
Would probably ache from laughing so much! Reese’s hair is gorgeous. My hair is thin,
And would never do what hers does……some people have it all….I have admired her since one of her first movies “The man in the moon.”

  51. So, I know nothing about current movies and have no recommendations. You did mention George Clooney. Which reminded me that my husband almost took his sister to the prom or some dance back in the day. Seems she needed a date and somebody who knew them both thought my husband (before he was my husband, of course) would be the perfect candidate. Probably some little old lady who loved his piano playing – he has always been popular with the little old ladies. Anyway, for some reason the date never happened, which is just as well, because she may have nabbed him and then where would I be. So, we don’t really know the Clooney’s, even though we lived a couple of towns over from them, but you mentioned George….so, you know, thought I’d share…. :)

  52. I have no earthly idea who has been nominated for any awards but … Mud, Captain Phillips, The Book Thief, Saving Mr. Banks and Lone Survivor are all excellent movies for different reasons. Loved evetyone of them!

FYI…Lone Survivor is mostly shone in IMAX/RPX which cost more ($12 for matinee). Just be aware and be prepared. Our theatre had limited showings that were on the regular screen.

  53. Ok – I haven’t seen much due to the fact that I have a 7 year old girl and 6 year old boy ….except for Frozen. And truly, it is a wonderful movie. But I would be interested to know what your take is when the queen goes to the hills and builds her castle of ice…she undergoes quite a transformation, and since I have a very impressionable little girl.. I was a little bothered by the message in that particular scene. No one has really mentioned it here, but you will see what I mean. Otherwise, a very good movie.
Now here’s an unsolicited review: Hubby and I have downloaded the much talked about and awarded show House of Cards on Netflix, and while I must say that it is excellent acting by Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright, it has left me feeling just icky after the 6th episode. Have you seen it? In fact, my husband – who watches Homeland and Breaking Bad with no flinching – even said, ” I feel corrupt after watching this.” While I’m sure it probably nails it in terms of what really goes on in Washington as far as the said “corruption” – I prefer to believe that there has to be someone up there at the Capitol and White House that still has a shred of human decency and morality.
Don’t know that I will continue to watch.
Thanks always for your thoughts – you bring a smile to so many. – Amy

  54. loved reading the comments…I’ve got some catching up to do on my movies
i did see August:Osage County this past Monday with a couple of friends…excellent movie…language is awful…it is not a feel good movie but a very good movie

  55. Christiana M. says:

Definitely “Frozen”. My husband and I both loved it and I cried copiously through the song “Do You Want To Build A Snowman?”

  56. I saw Anchorman 2 and American Hustle over the holidays. Anchorman 2 was dumb. I really liked American Hustle. The language was REALLY BAD, but not as bad as what I have heard about the Wolf of Wall Street. I don’t understand these movies using such bad language. Does the majority of the American population REALLY talk like this? Other than the language, I really loved American Hustle. The costumes were GENIUS! I loved all of the actors and actresses! It was really a great movie! I actually watched Frozen online over the weekend. It too was great! Don’t ask me how it’s on the Internet, but it is! Full length–credits and all. I love Reese’s hair and dress also. She has always been one of my favorites. A previous commenter stated that her shenanigans of late have disappointed her. I felt that way too at first, but she is only human. Thank God that I don’t live under the microscope that is the world of celebrities. Reese is looking great in her “older” age! LOL!

  57. Saving Mr. Banks. . .cried my way through the entire ENTIRE thing!
I LOVE Mary Poppins and I was shocked that Emma Thompson and Tom Hanks weren’t nominated for their roles.
    Frozen -you’ll love it!

I watched The Butler the other night. I tried to like I really did. ..but so many holes in the story line, I had a rough time.

We love The Desolation of Smaug.

Do you watch Sherlock (british version on PBS)?
The first two seasons are on Netflix and the 3rd just began on Sunday night.
Between that and Downton, Sunday is a great night for TV. Seriously, it’s appointment viewing.
    SO SO GOOD!
