Well, I just got home from my first-ever lacrosse game. Our high school was playing for the state championship, and since we know a lot of the kids on the team, we decided it would be fun to go to the game. And LISTEN. WAS IT EVER. We had a blast. It was hot as fire and I’m pretty sure that I may have gotten my first sunburn of the season, but it was so worth it. Our boys won, and I am tickled to know that there is lo, yet another sport that I enjoy watching.
Granted, I wasn’t really dealing with a shortage in that area, especially considering that we went to a high school baseball play-off game this past Friday night, and I spent most of the weekend following the State / Auburn baseball games on Twitter.
All I know to say is that my daddy trained me well.
But I will not bore you with additional talk of sports (except to say that the SEC baseball tournament is only 2 weeks away!) because we have far more important business to tend to today. And that business is this.
My friend Lisa-Jo Baker has written a fantastic book about motherhood. It’s called Surprised by Motherhood: Everything I Never Expected about Being a Mom, and I have so many good things to say about it. It’s beautifully written, it’s insightful, and (in my opinion) it’s just as much a love letter to Lisa-Jo’s beloved South Africa as it is to her kids (I was fascinated by Lisa-Jo’s strong sense of place because it totally parallels the way I feel about the South). More than anything, this is a book that beautifully chronicles the joys and the heartaches and the wonders of motherhood. It will warm your heart and feed your soul whether you’re a mom, an aunt, a mentor, a godmother, a grandmother, or a mom-to-be.
I’m so happy to be giving away two copies of Surprised By Motherhood (thanks, Lisa-Jo!). But there’s a catch: I’m only going to leave this giveaway open for 24 hours so that the folks who don’t win still have a chance to order it in time for Mother’s Day.
So. If you’d like to enter to win, all you have to do is leave a comment on this post, and just for kicks – since it’s spring and all – tell me your favorite flower. But if your allergies are terrible and your don’t really care for flowers, then tell me your favorite kind of chocolate. Or, I don’t know – just tell me something. WORDS OF ANY KIND.
I’ll close this giveaway at 10:00pm central tomorrow night and draw for winners ASAP.
Happy Monday, y’all!

My favorite flower changes from season to season and sometimes day to day. But, right now, I am loving sweet pea’s because they remind me of my childhood. Mama and Daddy had a fence out back and when the summer came and the sun shined on the pods, the pods popped and made beautiful flowers and had a beautiful scent. Thank you for making me think of this wonderful memory. :-)

Wildflowers! Just the way they bloom by the roadsides!
My favorite flower these days is peonies. What a fun question!
My favorite flower is whatever I can’t seem to grow (or find) at the moment. Last summer I happened on hyssop at the garden center in Macon, MS. I knew nothing about it other than its biblical references so bought it on a whim. It flourished and smelled GLORIOUS. I have been unable to find it anywhere this year even at the aforementioned garden center. So today, my favorite flower is hyssop.
Jonquils are my favorite!
Gardenias…we don’t have them where we live now in Oregon, and my mom always has some waiting for me in our room when we go home to Alabama!
I would love to give this to my daughter for Mother’s Day. She’s had a lot of motherhood surprises. And, I love lilacs.
Roses! Hydrangeas are a close second though!
Black-eyed Susans! They add a sweet and natural pop to any arrangement to give it a comfy/casual feel. Roses are lovely, but too fancy. Give me a garden happy Black-eyed Susan any day!!
Loved your wonderful book. I laughed till I hurt. It was awesomeâ¤ï¸
My favorite flowers are lilacs. But since I live in the south I can no longer grow them. As much as I love them I don’t think I want to trade my winters for the ones that growing lilacs require though. I’ll just remember them fondly.
I got my bookmark on Saturday and I LOVE IT!!! Thank you so much:)

I would LOVE to win this book. I’ve already bought and read it myself as well as bought another copy and gave to a friend. I plan on buying one to give to my sister for Mother’s Day but I honestly wish I could afford to give one to every single mother I know. Lisa-Jo has been such an immense blessing to me as a motherless daughter who has had to find my as a mother these last 2 years. She’s an incourager and I’d love to be able to share with as many people as possible. Regardless of the winner, thank you for the giveaway. I know every reader will be blessed.
Oh…and I pretty much love any and all flowers, but I’m a Texas girl, so I’d be lying if I said Bluebonnets don’t have an extra special place in my heart. :)
This Southern belle loves azaleas and camellias, but my favorite: sunflowers!
If you follow the SEC tourney when UK is playing, look for Logan Salow. He is a freshman relief pitcher from our small town and was SEC player of the week a few weeks ago. He is a wonderful young man.
