A Free People Capsule, If You Will

Earlier this week my friend Jamie asked if I had any suggestions for how she could spend a gift card at my beloved Free People.

My response was something along the lines of I AM HERE FOR SUCH A TIME AS THIS.

Why? Well, I love Free People. I wear a lot of Free People stuff. I mean, I enjoy the Amazon dupes as much as anyone, but the dupes aren’t typically sized the same as FP, and one of the great joys of Free People is the fact that a lot of their styles are oversized. If you equate the word “oversized” with “comfortable” – as I do – then you understand why this matters. Free People is also heavily dependent on cotton – they do sweatshirt fabric better than just about anybody – and I love that because that means their stuff BREATHES. I especially love FP for traveling, and when D and I go to NYC next week, one way I’ll combat the heat is by wearing my FP dresses that pretty much just touch me on the shoulders.

All that to say: when Jamie asked if I had some suggestions, I basically blew up her phone for the next 30 minutes while I sent her links. She posted on IG about the lengthiness of my response, and a few of you (“SOOOOOO MANY OF YOU”) (approximately six of you) asked for details.

Here are the details. To be clear, I don’t own all of these things. I don’t even own most of them. But if I were shopping at FP with comfort on my mind, I’d head in these directions. Also, just so you know: if you click on “size + fit” next to each item on the FP website, you will typically find bust measurements for that particular clothing item. It’s a really helpful gauge if you’re trying to figure out if something is true to size, oversized, or a tent in clothing form. :-)

We the Free Mari Muscle Pullover

This is one of my very favorite FP items; I might own it in three different colors. :-) This is my go-to sweatshirt situation when I fly, and while the youths would wear this as a dress, I wear it with leggings. I also wear it year-round. Great with sneakers or Tevas or my favorite fuzzy sandals. A real MVP.

We the Free Planters Garden Pullover

I don’t have this in my closet, but it’s on my wishlist. My goodness it would be so great with some skinnier jeans – even if that’s just a straight leg – and then paired with some boots or some Birks. This would be a fall uniform for me.

We the Free Camden Maxi Sweatshirt

I actually just ordered this in white; I think it could be a great game day option for college football this fall. Plus, I love my other sweatshirt dresses from FP. Just FYI: if you’re an Aggie, the Brandy Wine option looks like a good A&M maroon.

We the Free Camden Sweatshirt

There are dupes for this all over Amazon, but you can’t beat the color selection in the original FP version. This sweatshirt is a little shorter in the front than in the back, and I love the way it looks with baggier jeans.

We the Free Prima Cardigan

I sent this cardigan to Jamie because it’s such a great statement piece. It’s spendy, but it would also elevate any outfit – and you can dress it up or down. A beautiful option if you’re a person who loves a cardigan as a top layer.

We the Free Madison Denim Jacket

This boxy denim jacket is insanely cute. I’d love to wear it by itself with a long skirt or even a pair of shorts. This would be something I’d wear all year long; you could style it a million different ways.

Effortless Ease Tunic

I also just ordered this shirt and can’t wait for it to come in. I ordered it specifically to wear with cut-offs / shorts because in addition to the fact that the fabric is thin, it looks like it would catch a good breeze when I’m walking around outside. :-)

Care FP Slow Down Tee

I can’t stand a tight t-shirt situation, so from that perspective, this t-shirt is a winner. It’s a great length for shorts or leggings, and I love the 3/4-length sleeve for a little sun protection.

Cascade Sweatshirt

The handkerchief hem is a fun variation on a normal sweatshirt, and the notched neckline is another fun detail. This sweatshirt would not be for me because if something doesn’t cover my full and complete stomach area, I’m not interested, but if you like for things to hit you at the waist, this is a thumbs up.

Icon Tee

This shirt is a little shorter than the previous tee I mentioned, which means that (for me) it’s better for shorts and a less likely candidate for leggings. You walk in freedom with how you want to wear it, though. Lots of great colors and fabric that’s oh-so-soft.

Rainy Day Hoodie

Oh that I felt good enough about my thighs to wear this as a dress :-) – but as it stands, I would wear it with leggings. I would also ABSOLUTELY wear it to a Mississippi State sporting event, because that “violet siren” color is close enough to maroon for me. If you love the look of a hoodie with the comfort of a tunic / dress, this is for you. So cute.

We the Free Ella Rollneck Sweater

I’m a fan of a sweater that doesn’t have a big band around the bottom of it, so this rolled hem situation is right up my personal sweater alley. Honestly, it’s a little tricky to think about fall / winter right now when it’s 472 degrees in Birmingham, but the Bubble Tea color is calling my name. So versatile and such a flattering length.

We the Free Denim Dreaming Railroad Stripe Pullover

Everything about this shirt – the stripe, the ruffle down the side of the placket, the big pocket, the cut of the hem in the back – every bit of it speaks to me. The measurements listed in size + fit are wrong, but according to the single review, the fit is oversized if you order TTS. I think it’s worth a try.

Astoria Sweatshirt Tunic

I haven’t ordered this, so I’m not sure exactly how short it is – but if it’s too mid-thigh-ish, I just would throw on tights or leggings this fall and go about my merry way. It looks effortless, and the blue color is also beautiful. Reviews say it’s very oversized, so you might want to read those before you pick a size.

Terry Towel Cardigan

If I bought this sweater, it would be my sole purchase for a season :-) – but man it’s beautiful. And if someone is looking for one memorable piece to go with the clothes they already have, then by diggity this cardigan might just be it. The colors are gorgeous.

Hope y’all have the best weekend – and by all means, be free.

(See what I did there?)

(It’s slightly cringe, but I’m gonna let it ride.)

Love,
SH
