I found the finials!
I thought I should tell you since I’m sure you stayed awake all night wondering where in the world they were.
Strangely enough, they were in a box. A box in the garage. Go figure.
I also found the big pewter fish platter that my dear friend Bubba gave us as a wedding present. The fish was quite delighted because he was ready to get out of the box and return to his place of prominence in my kitchen.
Then I discovered a huge green bottle that’s one of my favorite things. It was a gift from Mrs. Cook, a woman in my hometown who owned an antique shop. She also was a member at the church where I grew up, and on Sunday mornings she always walked in the sanctuary at least thirty minutes late, hair sort of artfully akimbo, wearing a look of resigned bewilderment on her face, almost like she was a little ticked off that church had to be on Sunday morning – AGAIN – because really it would be so much more convenient if we could meet on Saturday nights around 9-ish, preferably after cocktails. Her house was CHOCK FULL of decorative goodness, and when I finished grad school, she gave me three funky glass bottles that she found when she was cleaning out closets. Those bottles have had a place of honor in every place I’ve lived since.
Also, last night I discovered that there are lights underneath the kitchen cabinets. Somehow this detail escaped me when we looked at the house, inspected the house, walked through the house, and moved into the house. But last night, as I was trying to figure out if I could put a nail in the backsplash (don’t ask), I looked up, and there were lights! Five of them!
Because I am a freak, I spent the next 45 minutes trying to figure out the optimum lighting equation for the room. I tried just the recessed lights in the ceiling, then just the under-the-cabinet lights, then I dimmed the recessed lights but only turned on a couple of the newly discovered lights, then turned everything on at the same time. Since I’m a firm believer that too much of a good thing is a good thing, I decided that I like all the lights on at once.Â
Then, in an homage to my new lighting options, I left the kitchen cabinet lights on all night long. Just because I could. And this morning, when I walked into the kitchen and saw that my countertops were illuminated, I was happy.
You are totally justified in questioning my sanity.

The first comment-how fun!
My father knicknamed me Watt Waster because I like all the lights on, especially in the rooms I have left. I might return afterall. Glad the move is going so well.
THank Goodness you found the finials. I was up ALLLLL night worrying!
I wonder what other treasures await you in the new house?
Did you happen to find my sanity in there somewhere? I misplaced it quite a while ago, and was wondering if perhaps you might have found it in the move….
Great description of Mrs. Cook. You know, I still love (and display, of course!) what she gave us when B. and I married.
And while we are not related to Tom Bodett (of Motel 6), I think it is in our blood to “leave the light(s) on.” :)
I wish I could meet Mrs. Cook.
Also, the day that the lighting in my kitchen was installed will go down as one of the happiest days of my life.
There will be no questioning of your sanity from me.
One note about the under cabinet lights. If you happen to keep thiings like, ummm, chocolate in your cabinets and leave the lights on at night, the chocolate might melt. Not that I have chocolate in my cabinets, you understand, but I have heard that somewhere. ;-)
oh how is miss my under-the-counter lights in our “home we no longer live in”
If some consider this crazy, then I’ll save a seat for you in the looney bin ;)
Blessings,
Karla
How fun!! I love lights under the cabinets. I wish I had them! It’s so helpful to see what you’re doing on the counter!! (unless you wait a little too long to clean up messes and then it’s illuminated for all the world to see)
So glad you found your treasured things! I still remember our first major move … dh’s back was out and I finally relented from my do-it-myself attitude and allowed my aunt to help me pack. What fun to open boxes labeled “misc” and never know what was inside. I’ll never forget finding my breast pump safely packed away with my wedding china.
Their this lady in the church I attend who is concern for the needy.
I have never seen her on time and I don’t know why she late.
But she has a heart of gold.
I have one (1) 4-foot flourescent light in my kitchen. That’s all. Of course my kitchen is postage stamp-sized. I would kill (okay, I’d give someone a stern talking-to) for under-cabinet lighting.
What a great discovery, and of course that you found the missing finials. I didn’t sleep well at all with the missing finials on my mind all night. ;-)
Mrs. Cook sounds like a lady at my church. Her husband is the one who says “A-MEN!” Real loud and drawn out after each prayer.
I love kitchen cabinet lights-that way when i sneak into the kitchen in the middle of night for a snack I am not blinded by the big light on the ceiling.
Enjoy unpacking!
Susan
No questioning of sanity here! How great to find hidden treasures in a new house! And glad you found your finials.
It is so fun to find wonderful surprises in a new house….I remember our house in Baton Rouge, actually the garden. I loved seeing what would come up in the spring after we had lived there a while. But i hated the fact that I pulled up La. phlox (my favorite) because I thought it was a weed about to take over!!!!!!!!! aacckkk…..
Sounds like fun discoveries going on over there…..especially dearly loved things discovered in odd places!!
I really can relate – I HATE to lose anything, drives me nuts til I find it. At least if youd had to stay up all night looking you would have had lights to show you the way.
pleased you are enjoying your new home
