I postponed yesterday’s Walmart trip because I just didn’t have the strength. The thought of all the Grocery Amateurs overwhelmed me and ultimately convinced me to stay and home and do productive things.
Like, for instance, napping.
But today I hit the ground running (not really. I actually hit the ground staggering, seeing as how Alex had a bit of a screaming fit in the middle of the night last night, and when I finally got to his room he looked at me, all wide-eyed and angelic, and said, “Hey, Mama. You wanna snuggle up with me?” I had a difficult time going back to sleep after that because I was haunted, frankly, by the memory of the high-pitched shrieking).
Anyway, we were fully ensconced in the Walmart Zoo by 9:30-ish this morning. I hadn’t showered at that point and was sporting a lovely long-sleeved black t-shirt with some khakis that may or may not have a hole in them, so of course I saw several people that I know from church who no doubt went home hoping that maybe Santa would give me an Extreme Makeover for Christmas, because shhhh! don’t tell anyone! but she really needs it!
When I got to the dairy section of the store I immediately looked for the cream cheese, because one of you nice people told me in the comments of my previous grocery-centric post that your Walmart had Philadelphia Cream Cheese for 94 cents. And even though I was fully stocked on the cream cheese end of things, I had to know – HAD TO – what the price was at my Walmart. As it turns out the price was 98 cents, a full penny cheaper than what I spent at Publix last week, and despite the fact that I technically didn’t need any I still bought two blocks of it because it was 98 cents and please don’t judge me it’s a sickness.
This afternoon I realized that I now have a refrigerator full of cream cheese with no place to go, so being a good Southern girl and all I made cheese logs. And since you have endured way too much talk of cream cheese on this blog over the last few days, I thought I’d share the recipe with you because, well, I owe you at least that much.
3 blocks Philadelphia cream cheese, softened
4 green onions, chopped fine (use tops only)
1 large jar dried beef, chopped fine
1 tablespoon Accent
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
Mix well with your hands. Then form mixture into 2 or 3 cheese logs and cover with chopped pecans. Chill until ready to serve.
In news unrelated to cream cheese (IS THERE EVEN SUCH A THING ANYMORE?), I finished up some Christmas shopping for Mama today (HEY MAMA! YOU READING? HAVE YOU FIGURED OUT HOW TO TURN ON THE BLOG?). On my side of the family we set a spending limit, draw names and shop for one person (well, one grown-up person…the kids get gifts from everybody). This year I drew Mama’s name, and today I bought her a gift so sassy that I cannot wait for her to open it so that I can take pictures and show y’all.
Finally: did I mention that my parents are arriving tomorrow? And that I haven’t started cleaning yet? And that I haven’t vacuumed since Saturday? And that my mama not only sees dust from a mile away, she also seems to have an uncanny ability to smell it? To sense it, even?
Needless to say, Hazel here better get out the Endust.
Later, internets.
Merry, merry to y’all.
Maybe you’ll get a gift card from the Gap. :>)
I think you need a knew category totally for cream cheese.
Fish, cream cheese, pickles. Sounds pretty good to me! :>) Merry Christmas!
Gotta love those deals! And yum…cheese logs! I have never made anything like that…maybe some day!
I hear ya’…I should be cleaning and wrapping, but just had to take a break…busy, busy, busy!
Merry Christmas!
Sounds like a great recipe. Thanks, I’ll be trying this since I’m stocked here too.
I have Cream Cheese sickness too. Warm some up and pour some salsa over it. Eat it with a spoon. I mean tortilla chips. My mother in law arrives in about an hour and a half. Send Hazel over please! I’m much to busy reading blogs to clean.
See, you say, “I haven’t vacuumed since Saturday” as if it is something to be ashamed of.
I say, “I vacummed Saturday!” with pride, since it’s less than a week ago.
We are leaving to go out of town on Saturday (alert to the ring of thieves), returning on Wednesday, and I have people coming on Friday. I will be gone most of Thursday and Friday. The point is, I have to clean tomorrow!
I bought 14 packages of cream cheese yesterday morning and promptly went home and used every bit of it to make cheese cakes. I need more. Or I need help. OR, I need more help most likely.
Not that the thought of “molding cream cheese” with my hands somehow turns my stomach …. the recipe otherwise sounds totally yum.
Hmmm- I wonder how cheese log would work on a toasty bagel. I mean, really.
Well, I’ll stick to the “eat it with a spoon” method.
Until Jan 3. Then, you’re getting a big ole care package o’cream cheese goodness missy. Cause my Walmart had it for 96 cents and I bought a case.
C.A.S.E.
But, I could slather it the ham Monday. Hmmmmmmmmmmmm.
If not, look- or smell- for that package on the 6th or so :)
I think Jennifer/Snapshot had the perfect response for the vacumming situation!
Blessings,
Karla
Here’s another cream cheese recipe, ya know, since you have so much on hand. Make this, maybe double it. You’ll really resent anyone that dares eat it. You’ll want it all for yourself.
Recipe and comments courtesy of Chris @ Notes From the Trenches
“Crack on a Chip”
2 blocks of cream cheese
3 cans of vegetarian refried beans (why vegetarian, I have no idea other than that is what I always buy. One last hold over from when I was a vegetarian and felt a smug superiority buying vegetarian beans, because no one is sneaking pig feet into MY beans!)
2 jars of salsa (I use WM’s black bean & corn mild salsa. YUMM~Polly)
2 packages of taco seasoning mix
2.5-3 lbs of ground meat (turkey or beef will do)
Brown the ground meat in a pan. Add the taco seasoning mix. Cook according the instructions, which I think is universally add water & the contents of the packets.
Take out a large pyrex baking dish.
Do you see why I dont give out recipes?
Spread the two blocks of cream cheese on the bottom of the baking dish.
Then spread the cans of refried beans.
Then pour the jars of salsa on top.
Then pour the seasoned meat mixture on top. Sort of mix it around with the salsa a bit.
Then sprinkle the cheese of top.
Put into the oven oh maybe 350 for 20 minutes or so. Until it is hot and the edges are bubbly.
Then take it out and eat it with the LIME flavored Tositos, which are like crack by themselves. I can not eat enough of those chips. Serves 1-10 people
There may be dust bunnies, but hey, you’ve got 3 cheese logs!! I don’t see the problem! ;vD
One of the best things I’ve tasted was room temp. block of cream cheese with soy sauce poured over it. That’s it. Served with crackers. It was really good. So just in case you have an extra block or two lying around not knowing what to do with itself…
Merry Christmas!
That “Crack on a Chip” recipe sounds wonderful and I had to laugh at the title. Too funny. I just might make this for our Christmas Eve get together at the in laws :)
Oh and I totally agree with the vacuum comment, “I vacummed Saturday!” I’m so very proud of myself. If you could see my house now though you would wonder how you missed the news of a tornado that hit Alabama.
Merry, Merry Christmas to you and your family. Thanks for making my day brighter! Have fun and don’t worry about the cleaning, I’m sure it’s fine. :)
I am tired just reading your “to do” list! LOL
Merry Christmas to you and all your family! May you be lifted in the true spirit of God’s love!
It’s just not fair that the product called ENDust doesn’t do just that-it doesn’t END the DUST F O R E V E R.
Merry Christmas. So glad I found your blog.
Polly – I like ANYTHING called “crack on a chip.” That recipe sounds delicious – and the black bean and corn salsa is my favorite, too.
And Kelli – I had not thought of the cheese log on a bagel option, but now I’m absolutely going to Panera to get a bagel or nine. Because I think it would be a DELICIOUS breakfast on Christmas Eve morning.
So now I definitely have to vacuum today. Sigh. The debate is over. Thanks for the laughs!
Vacuum? What’s that? I’m dog-sitting for my sister FOR 11 DAYS, and her dog’s hair, combined with my dog’s, makes it totally futile to even try to control.
So I’m drinking coffee and reading blogs instead:)
A girl can never have too much cream cheese, BooMama. There are endless, litereally endless, possibilities.
Your cheese log sounds delicious and I just happen to have four undesignated eight-ounce packages of the wonderful stuff in my fridge. I even have scallions on hand. And yeah, I’m thinking bagels. Goodness, one quick visit over here and my menu plan is all set!
Merry Christmas to you, too.
In case any of you gals need another easy, yummy, cream-cheesy recipe, I’ve posted one. Enjoy! Maybe we can get some sort of walking challenge going in January to walk off all the cream cheese we ate over the holidays!
I would love a cream cheese log right now. Sounds yummy! I have spent the morning trying to deal with my upset stomach. I didn’t realize how much chocolate I ingested yesterday while baking for the neighbors. Chocolate covered cherries, pretzels and almonds did not settle well as my 3 main meals yesterday. Have a great Christmas with your family and thanks for the laugh this morning.
I am with you on the cleaning thing. I have company coming from Russia..and I don’t know when they are arriving! I am guessing Sat. night, but I could be wrong. So, is my house sparkling clean?? no..!! ha! I seriously need to get into cleaning mode here.
congratulations on the cream cheese!
blessings,
Jenny
Oh I love cream cheese too, and there are so many wonderful recipes….so why not one more.
My kids love these (their 27 & 30). Spread cream cheese on a slice of dried beef, then use it to wrap a Sweet Gherkin pickle. I usually cut it in half…..at least they last a little longer that way.
Merry Christmas!!
Hope you have a Merry Christmas and a lovely visit from your folks
I am trying this recipe Sunday! I also went crazy and bought tons of cream cheese.
I may try this after the first of the year because I AM NOT going back to the store for one more thing. I’m actually sick of Wal-Mart and Super T–if that is even possible for me.
Merry Christmas, if I haven’t said that already on your blog.
Okay, here’s an idea for a blog entry….BooMama Gump’s Cream Cheese Diary, kind of like Forrest Gumps gazillion ways w/shrimp……You will definitely draw even more readers with such an entry….may even get GramBooMama reading with such revelations. And we can all help by posting what we do with Cream Cheese…I just used four bricks of it to make Cheese Strudel….Christmas morning treats….can’t wait. I might just give away the recipe if you want more ways to use the case of cream cheese. You could make a million dollars or pennies selling these! Merry Christmas, and what a PRECIOUS picture of the blood curdling screamer you posted! And how can you turn down an invitation to cuddle????? They DO get too big to ask after a while…:-( Enjoy!
LOL funny I should read this blog today. We are out of bread, I’m sick of eggs and ham, so I was going to opt for cereal only to discover that THE ANTS INVADED OUR CEREAL! Grrrrrrrrr! It is pure nastyness to pour some cereal only to have a few ants crawl out of your bowl. Nastyness!
So I pulled out the sliced ham and cream cheese and made “wraps” having the cream cheese in the middle wraped by the slice of ham. two or three of those and a cup of coffee . . . that was my breakfast. Don’t knock it, ’til you try it.
Then item #2. I’ve got a pair of aunt coming soon and I have dust mountains everywhere! So – I should be cleaning. Where am I? Oh yeah . . .blogging.
