Survey Says…

Okay, here’s the deal. I am cooking this Sunday night for the latest crew of new members in our church. There will probably be around 50 people at the dinner.

In the next 24 hours, I need to figure out what I’m cooking so that I can buy the groceries and get the food ball rolling (that sounds kind of gross, doesn’t it? I promise I won’t serve an actual ball of food).

So here’s the question. If you were going to a supper at your church, what meal would make you clap your hands from sheer excitement? And if you don’t get excited about a meal every now and again, I’m afraid you’ll have to move on to another blog because clearly we have nothing in common. ;-)

I need an entree’, a side, a bread, and a dessert. And be realistic. This is home-cookin’…so if you’re thinking, “Oh, I’d like a filet and then some bananas foster like they have at Palace Cafe’ in New Orleans” – well, that’s just plain crazy talk.

So tell me what your favorite “church meal” would be. And thanks in advance for the help…I’m not usually this last-minute with my plans, but well, you know, there was lots of cleaning around here this past weekend.

  1. Guess I’m movin’ on, then. :)
You know I’m the wrong person to ask. That’s my problem with cooking…I can’t think of anything to cook!

  2. I always like casserole type of sides. A cheesy potato casserole or green bean casserole. Yummy!

Chicken or BBQ Brisket are always yummy main dishes.

You are doing all this yourself? Are you insane!!!!

(Will you come cook for me? We only have 5 here!)

Chicken Lasanga Florentine (You can make it ahead of time)I’ll send you the recipe if you need it.
Crunchy Romaine Salad-it’s in Come On In.
    Sister Schubert Rolls
    Ice Cream “Sunday” bar.

  4. Yum Yum!! Another excellent topic — food!! Sister and I have a lot in common though — I can stare at 100 things in my pantry and say “I haven’t the slightest idea what to cook!” But, I do love eating what others prepare. So, church meals — maybe a yummy lasagna, salad, garlic bread, and some chocolate yummy thing. Or, maybe chicken spaghetti instead of lasagna!! Just a few ideas!! Such a servant you are Boo!!

  5. Have you considered either beef (my favorite) or pork roast? I serve the beef roast with gravy made from the cooking juices, halved potatoes cooked in with the roast for the last 30 minutes or so, or mashed potatoes, and seasoned Italian green beans. Frozen yeast rolls are good, or just get the good brown and serve rolls.
For dessert, homemade banana pudding(!)something sinfully chocolate, or maybe banana splits for a change. Everyone loves those at our church. We slice the bananas and put the ice cream on top, then let everyone choose their own toppings, such as fudge sauce, caramel, sprinkles, etc. And don’t forget the whipped cream!
I like to do the roasts because I can put them in the oven or crockpot and forget them for several hours while I prepare all the other stuff.
    Hope this helps.

I’m like EK on this one so sorry, I’m no help. Cooking for others scares me.

  7. I use to be in charge for the mens group at Holy Communion. Corkey’s is the best deal if you have one. Chinese is another good place to pick up food for fifty. You can do it cheap. Chicken is very easy to cook on the grill and take it up there hot.People don’t really expect a fancy meal at church. They just want to get full.

  8. Those are great ideas. Thanks, y’all. LM, will you send me that chicken lasagna recipe? I was actually going back and forth about doing a lasagna / chicken spaghetti kind of meal or what D likes to call “an identifiable meat” (he says that guys like to see a chunk of meat on a plate) with a casserole. So I have much thinking to do. And Diane, I love your ice cream sundae idea – that solves dessert because I don’t enjoy cooking sweets at all, and I think that’s something everyone would love.

If y’all have any other ideas, let me know! And yes, Addie, I’m cooking it myself…for some reason it’s fun to me…I am weird. :-)

  9. BBQ chicken on the grill (get d to do that) Salad bags ,French bread , and green beans that you can just heat up on the stove. Ice cream sandwiches. Would be easy and quick…Or instead of the greeen beans go buy some potatoe salad and put in a large dish and sprinkle paprika on it. That way you don’t have to do much and it is done.

  10. I hadn’t thought about cooking something on the grill and then taking it up there hot. Hmmmm…. But you know I wouldn’t go buy potato salad. I would make it, but still, that’s pretty easy. And I could do it ahead of time.

  11. Poppyseed chicken is a great casserole to feed a crowd. Also, Edna Holland’s cheese grits are wonderful with a roast and sweet and sour green beans. You know I love to cook, but I’ve never cooked for 50! Let me know if you want recipes.

  12. Liz – I love your poppyseed chicken recipe. Mama makes your recipe, too. Email me your sweet and sour green beans recipe if you don’t mind. And Edna’s cheese grits are the best. So good.
