We Will Now Return To Our Regularly Scheduled BooMama Programming

Since I have bombarded y’all with Important Social Issues the last couple of days, I’ll get you up-to-speed on some of the more run-of-the-mill occurrences ’round these parts.

1. I made a huge grocery run this afternoon because I’m cooking for something at church this weekend and I needed to get all my supplies. The supplies included grits, which started to call my name as I was putting away the groceries and as a result became part of our supper tonight. So here’s what I’m wondering: for those of you in other parts of the country, have you ever heard of grits? Have you ever eaten them? And if so, what did you think? I don’t know anyone in this neck of the woods who doesn’t like them…especially with a little salt, a little butter, and a little cheddar cheese. They are SO good. And no, you cannot eat a singular “grit.” One time a friend of my mama’s offered a guest from the North some grits, and he replied, “Um, yes – I believe I would like to try one.” :-)

2. Bucky’s gone! If he and Ace Cannon had both stayed for another week, my AI frustration would’ve reached an all-time high, I think. Next week is standards – so hopefully we’ll finally hear a little old fashioned singing. I don’t think Daughtry can possibly manipulate a big band song into his usual alternative angst. Can he?

3. For those of you who are watching The Amazing Race (Merritt), Lake’s language tonight – directed at his wife, no less – was HORRIBLE. It bothers me that he’s so mean to her and she takes it. On one level it’s totally not my business, but on another level they are quite voluntarily putting their relationship “out there.” And it bothers me, all the hateful talk.

4. I think Alex and I are going to dye Easter eggs Friday morning…this will be a first for us. I bought a kit like Mama used when I was little, but I haven’t dyed eggs in, oh, say, 30 years? I’m a bit out of practice. I’ll be sure to post pictures of the big event.

5. BIG NEWS! Guess who’s going to see Faith and Tim?!? YEP – BooMama and BooDaddy. David did a little wheelin’ and dealin’ with our top secret Nashville connection, ;-) and we got the ticket hook-up. The grandparents have been placed on alert for babysitting duties, and we are going to go on a real date, to a real concert, and I’m going to do my best to not stalk the talent, even though Faith probably should, you know, meet me since we’re BFF and all. Regardless, I am DELIGHTED that the hubby and I will get to have a fun night out.

6. I realize that I’ve been a little wound up over the last 48 hours. You can blame Oprah. And here’s to hoping that she doesn’t tackle health insurance costs next, or I may have to launch a march on Washington. ;-)

  1. Okay, I’m at the 8 minute mark of the Race and I had to pause it to comment on Lake. I mean y’all, first of all it’s a noun, not a name. I really hate that he is from my home state. If he wins this race I will so disappointed.

  2. “It’s a noun, not a name” – OH that made me tickled. Just hold on, TT – he really gets wound up later on.

  3. 15 minute mark…
I just noticed my typo-I just get so excited I can’t help it! Another observation, on that Monica gal. She is a bright one, she is. Rome is where Ceaser walked around (uh huh) and Athens is where thinking began (right again, princess). Good ole Yolanda pegged it when she commented Mon-Mon not having much going on up in the cabeza.

  4. Boomama….those friends from the north have probably had “grits” in the technical sense….they just know it as polenta. It “aint” the same though!!!

I’m over AI….but thought it was interesting to get some family background on the contestants last night.

You and Alex are BOTH going to have dyed HANDS on Friday….the stain will probably still be there on Sunday!!!

If you do decide to launch that march on Washington be sure to let me know. I can’t think of anything MORE fun! We’ll have to take the bike though, cause I refuse to take the “Dog” as Sister so aptly calls it.

  5. Oh, Bubba, if I do launch a march on Washington, I will use the term “march” in the purely symbolic sense until I am taxi’d to the very edge of the reflecting pools. THEN I’ll begin my literal march toward the Capitol. :-)

Polenta is SO not the same. :-)

  6. Oh, y’all…if that happens, then I’ll be taking the “Bird” to D.C.

But…I’ll need a parasol for the march. I can’t take the sun. :)

  7. Oh, I second the parasol option. Is a march less effective if everyone is wearing wide-brimmed hats, large sunglasses, and carrying parasols?

  8. Merritt says:

Lake’s gone!!! He’s gone!!! Hallelujiah, he’s gone!!! TT, Boo, we can all rest easy now. Watching last night – with my kids no less – was a little uncomfortable with him talking like that to his wife. I decided to turn it into a “teachable moment”. I told Will if he ever talked like that to a girl I would…well, you know. And then I told Molly that if a boy ever talked to her like that, she should tell him goodbye and start walking. They both seemed appalled to see people talking like that to one another. I, too, am embarrassed that he is from our great state. He is NOT a good representative. We all clapped when they were eliminated at the end!

  9. Okay, enough of this TAR business. J/K

Back to AI. J came up with a wonderful theory last night the explains why Ace, Kellie and Bucky have been able to stick around so long (and Lord knows Kellie could go, gulp, all the way). It’s because the mentality of the majority of people hovers right around the same level as our 5-year-old son, who LOVES Ace, Kellie and Bucky. Davis was so very sad for Bucky last night (he believes Bucky to be an actual cowboy). And, when he woke me up this morning (he is my personal alarm clock), the VERY FIRST thing he said to me was, “Mom, do you have Bucky’s phone number?” When I told him that I did not have Bucky’s phone number, he said, “Well, can you get it for me?” Sweet thing wanted to call and tell Bucky how sorry he was and how much he liked him. Precious boy.

He also refers to Kellie as “his girlfriend.” Last night I asked him, “But Davis, don’t you think Katharine is beautiful?” He kind of shrugged and said, “Not like Kellie.” Yep, he likes the bubble-headed, bleached-blonde type (not that there’s anything wrong with that).

  10. Being from Arkansas, grits are on the menu in many of our restaurants and diners, including Waffle House. I don’t know if they’re on the menu in Waffle House’s in other parts of the country, or if it’s strictly a Southern thang. :)
I had grits just the other night, with butter and salt. I like cheese grits, too, though. Is that recipe you were commenting about on your recipe “Webpage”, boomama? If not, I covet it and would like to have it, please. :)

  11. Oh, Merritt and Daph, I am laughing out loud…chuckling, if you will.
Merritt, didn’t you feel sorry for Lake’s wife at the end when she tried to explain why their relationship “worked” for them? It was so sad to me.

Daph, you’re exactly right. I said today that I believe young Kellie could show up, stand on the stage for a minute and half without singing a note, and she would make it through to the next round on the male vote alone. The fellas LOVE HER. The thought of Davis wanting to call Bucky is just too sweet. Too sweet.

  12. Diane, there was no “recipe” involved…I just made 4 servings of grits and added heaping tablespoons of all except the salt. :-) I do have a good cheese grits recipe…I’ll post it to the recipe “webpage” as soon as I hunt it down this weekend.

  13. Thanks, boomama, I will be looking for it. Hope you have a good time dyeing Easter eggs, and a happy Easter, too. :)

  14. el presidente says:

Grits are available straight up through Virginia into DC, and beyond that they are unheard of or strange. You can find them sometime in NYC but generally all chi-chied up.

  15. I LUV grits with butter and salt. Nothing better.

And, a “grit” is another name for a skainchy redneck.:)

  16. Nope, no idea what grits are. I’ve HEARD of them, yes, but truthfully they sound NASTY!! What ARE they??

And if you’re an Amazing Race fan, why do we only hear about The Office and AI?? I don’t watch THOSE shows, whines Kate…write about the shows *I* watch!!! ;o)
