Soul Patrol!

I’m just sayin’.

So yay Taylor and all that, but y’all, that was the weirdest two hours of television I’ve ever seen.

Meatloaf? Mary J. Blige? Burt Bacarach? Dionne Warwick? Toni Braxton? Al Jarreau? The most random line-up of artists ever.

The weirdest was the whole Clay Aiken thing – so weird in fact that I found it difficult to watch, primarily because Clay’s hair was flat-ironed within an inch of its life and dyed auburn to boot, but those things didn’t seem to bother the young man who sat on the stool and hollered while Clay sang. BI-ZARRE.

The highlights? Carrie Underwood was great, and I thought Prince was delightful.

David pointed out that all the Idols’ “routines” remind him of The Brady Bunch – and I feel that’s an excellent call.

So Idol ’06 is officially over – no more Tuesday night “live blogging” – I’m sure you’re all crushed and will be waiting on the edge of your monitors for next season. Regardless, I think we can all agree on at least one thing: I spent far too much time thinking and writing about a reality singing competition considering that I’m, you know, GROWN. But as Alan Jackson says, “Too much of a good thing – is a good thing.” :-)

  1. Boomama I agree 100%. I thought it was BIZARRE! I just don’t understand how Simon Cowell can complain about “song choice” and then have them singing “That’s What Friends Are For” and “Time of My Life” on a show HE produces.

Congrats to your home boy Taylor :)

  2. Merritt says:

Yes, 2 hours was FAR too long. Ok, I know what you’re thinking…”I didn’t know Merritt watched American Idol.” Well, thanks to my 10 year old,, the whole family has been tuning in for about the past 6 or 7 weeks. Not religiously or anything but we have at least kept up with the jist of it all. So we were in front of our set tonight for 2 hours and I just kept thinking, “Tell me who won already!!” No offense to Taylor, but my whole family was definitely for Katharine. We were surprised. And Clay Aiken’s hair??!! I thought it was a wig…or extensions!???

  3. Merritt says:

I’m still here…just been REALLY busy lately with the end of the school year and we were in NY last week, remember? Guess what…we were on Letterman!!! Front row, baby!! I’ll tell you about it later. We also saw the Bacon Brothers (that would be Kevin and his brother in case you didn’t know they had a band) and they were VERY good. I’ll email you about the rest but those were the two highlights for me.

  4. boomama out! ha!!

i just cringed through that whole toni braxton performance. it was so icky!

  5. You got it right, again. Thanks for all the updates through the last few weeks when I was way behind. So great Taylor won! My hubby thinks maybe it’s going to start a new trend – grey is in.

  6. Soul Patrol !!! Whew!! O.K. — I LOVED seeing Clay again. Yes, his hair was a little distracting but that voice, that voice is God given!! Looking forward to the next AI already!!

Also, hey Merritt — the Bacon Brothers — how FUN!! Hey Bubba!!!
    Love to you both!

  7. Hmmmm…extensions…an interesting theory. That may be the answer, because his hair seemed really long. And Merritt, D is going to be so relieved that you commented…he has missed you.

Re: The Endless Final Idol, if it hadn’t been for TiVo and our ability to fast forward through everything that bored us, I honestly think I would’ve given up on it. Waaaaay too long.

  8. Okay, this was the first episode of Idol that I’ve sort of watched all season (big thanky-do to your hubby for the remote Tivo programming here on the West Coast). I was pretty confused by the whole thing-was the entire season this random in the choice of musical numbers? I mean, I watched the whole thing in about 10 minutes stopping of course to watch my little purple friend, Taffy, do what he does and walk off the stage. But the big question I had was about that creepy Aiken/stalker number. Was that fella one of those bad rejects from one of the early shows? And was he joking or really being serious?
And poor Toni Braxton. I guess she’s always kinda not really sang and instead peppered her vocal phrasings with all of those “whooos.” But she sure is a pretty thing. And tiny as well. I sat behind her in the early 90’s during some Dick Clark American Music award show or something like that. I even think Taffy is taller than her. Anyway, I’m glad your Taylor fella won another one for the 205. Soul Patrol y’all!

  9. BM, It definitely was an interesting 2 hours and don’t get me started on Lost! I just finished watching it…The funniest gig was the Clay Aiken thing because that dude was just TOO weird. And, poor Kelly they just humiliated her more by doing the whole ‘Puck and Pickler’ but I guess is was for laughs right? By the way, she needs to go back to the long hair. She looks like she is 12 yrs. old now!
    T-Lo Out

  10. Didn’t watch it. :/

  11. Uh oh. I’m pretty sure I’m in the minority here but I thougt Clay looked great and it was the highlight of the show for me to hear him sing again. I LIKE his hair, really. I didn’t even recognize until he started singing. And it’s pretty cool Kellie looks 12 because of course she acts 12. The whole lobster thing? Give me a break. The girl’s from the south – she’s seen a few big bugs! I don’t get Toni Braxton. At All. I’m tickled pink for Taylor – he’s been my pick from the minute we first saw him and he whipped out that juice harp. Nice to see a nice, down to earth guy win it.

  12. First, Merritt, I’ve missed you too, and I want to be cc’ed on that email about New York. I’m so excited that you got to go to Letterman; I want to hear all about it. Quick aside–do you remember the letter that was written to Dave when we were in college begging him to help get you and Wendi higher on the list to get into the CO house? Did that letter actually get sent? I think it did!

Ok, AI was the by far the weirdest and Velvetta-ist 2 hours of television EVAH! Loved Prince. The whole Clay Aiken/stalker thing was bizarre and uncomfortable for me. I am a Clay fan, but he looked strange and embarrassed (but EK, you’re right, he can sing). And, tt, yes, that stalker was an early audition reject, and I think he was serious (very, very scary).

Davis (5) was soooo very frustrated with the 2-hour bit. He kept waiting and waiting for them to crown a winner. He was very excited when Taylor won (he’s really into the whole girl vs. boy thing right now). I’m still a fan of Katharine, but I can see the appeal of Taylor.

Fortunately, during slow periods of AI, I was able to flip to Lost (which BooMama is a snob about and won’t watch). It was great; got to watch the full last hour. Anybody else here watch Lost?

  13. Sister says:

    Big ol’ YAWN. :)

  14. I believe that’s the perfect way to wrap up the season. :-)

  15. so true!! it was bizarre – but i was entertained nonethless. I LOVE Live and Chris so I was stoked about them performing together. (I have seen Live in concert – i was in the second row – which was so cool!)

Gald Taylor won and yes the Brady Bunch routines were annoying. good call on the simon thing.
