I Would Call This Post “The Best Of,” But That Implies Something Was Good To Begin With

Since some of y’all haven’t been reading my blog very long, this (and by “this” I mean “this day when I have had not one original or creative thought”) seems like an excellent opportunity to familiarize you with the history behind what I like to think is some astoundingly average writing here at BooMama.

And since a few of you have emailed me with questions (by the way, do you have any idea how many emails I’ve gotten in the last week with the word “pickle” in the subject line?), or you’ve asked me questions in the comments, or you’ve made some suggestions that, while oh-so-very-kind and appreciated, are way outside the realm of possibility, I want to take time to answer them since I am a good Southern girl and all.

So in order to address all those things, let’s step back into the archives, why don’t we? It’ll be a win / win for everyone: a trip down memory lane for those of you who have been reading here for awhile (okay – maybe not a total win for y’all)…a chance to get up-to-speed for those of you who haven’t been here very long…and an embarrassingly easy cop-out for me writing-wise.

Fun for all!

Or, you know, not.

“Where did you get the name BooMama?”

Well, it all goes back to our time in south Louisiana….

“I’d buy a book if you wrote it.” (Most encouraging comment ever, by the way.)

Well, that’s real sweet and all, but since I have no imagination at all, it’s not gonna happen. It would be painfully bad and people would laugh at me, as you will see after reading this.

“How do you find time to post so often?”

It helps when you only have one child and no social life whatsoever.

“Why don’t you ever use your real name?”

My real name isn’t common. My husband’s name and my child’s name are. I can use their names without giving too much away. But my name? Not so much. So it seems that the best way to protect our privacy at least a little bit is to keep my name off of this blog.

And then, of course, there’s the secret stuff that I don’t talk about here.

The bottom line is that I try to be specific enough on the blog that it’s readable, but not so specific that I give away too many identifying details, especially in regard to some ministry work that I do. I’m just more comfortable that way. And I think it’s the right thing to do for my family.

“Why don’t you post more pictures of yourself?”

Um, read that last paragraph.

“Why does your tagline say ‘Read by tens of people each and every day’?”

Because for the longest time, it was true. It was probably took three months for my Site Meter to climb over 1,000 visitors.

Plus, it’s an oddly comforting phrase to me – it reminds me of how many bloggity doors God has opened since last November. But if you have another suggestion, let me know.

“What’s your favorite post?”

Okay, no one really asked me that, but I needed a way to wrap up this post.

So I’ll go ahead and answer anyway:

Why, yes, I do.

A couple, in fact.

:-)

See y’all later.

  1. Okay, the letter to Alex? Precious. And the pictures of him as a newborn? Precious. And the bedtime stories? Precious, precious. You’re all so precious I’m just going to have to go and pinch Grayson’s cheeks, just to get it out of my system! :)

  2. Leave it to you to make me laugh and cry all at the same time. Sweet story about your son. Thanks for sharing. And, yes, I would buy your book too. We oculd have a diet coke at Barnes & Noble during your book signing! ;>)

  3. Well, now I feel like I’ve audited BooMama 101 and I’m kind of sorry that I can’t get a grade…

Thanks for the “recap”. Those of us with no cap thank you.

  4. First I cried, then I guffawed. Your son is absolutely adorable and you are just too funny! And you really do need to write a book. It would be great!

  5. You should never change
“Read by tens of people each and every day.”

    1) It’s freakin’ funny.
    2) It sounds like something you would say.
    3) I like it.

    So there you go.

  6. Hey Boomama, I love the post, I especially loved what you wrote for Alex. I did that for both my children, and I still write them a letter for every Birthday. My son just got his 16th!! (sigh)
I love visiting you everyday, you are so wonderfully refreshing.
    Be Blessed

  7. Well, I’ll excuse you for this total cop-out post because it gave me a great intro to the world of BooMama. :) Oh, and I agree – don’t change the “read by tens of people every day” – that’s one of the things that got me started reading your blog to begin with.

  8. Alex shares a birthday with my older sister, and mine’s 5 days earlier. I loved his birthday post. Loved it! Brings back such fond memories of my girls at his age. All that sweetness? All that excitement? Just melts ya into a puddle, don’t it?

You’ve got fans, BooMama, lots of ’em. And we’re all saving up to buy your first book.

  9. Perfect – just the way you are – except, you know, the original sin part. Don’t change, and thanks for telling us what your favorites were. I loved the post about Alex – precious, precious. I hope you have it printed out to put in one of his books somewhere. When he’s a teenager he’s gonna need to read it, and you may too!

  10. Boo Mama,

Oh I just LOVE that post about your son! Reminds me of a line in Steel Magnolias ~ “Laughter thru tears is my favorite emotion.”

By the way, I’d also do a commercial for c-section & epidural. Wasn’t it wonderful?

  11. Now don’t laugh at me but I decided something I could do that would be good for me is to start at the very beginning of your archives and read every single post you’ve done. I started a week ago. And I’m not near done. Until I read this today and clicked on Three Years Old Today, my favorite was Mama and the Fish Camp. (For those of you who missed this, it’s in her March archives – March 14th to be precise – and you need to read this because you need to laugh HARD.) Your birthday post to Alex was so moving, it’s now my favorite.

I love that you say read by tens and tens, obviously no longer true. But humble and I like that.

  12. Thank you so much for the catch up! I’m so happy I found your blog, it brings a smile to my face!

I just loved your letter to Alex, and I just love that there’s someone else who calls their little guy Boo too :)

  13. I’ve been a BooMama reader and loyal fan since almost the very beginning. On those days when everybody seems to find something more exciting to do than blogging, I know I can dig into your archives and find some good entertainment to reread. You never disappoint, either. :)

I’m going through a busy time combined with a dry spell in my blogging. Kind of uninspired, and I hate to inflict boring, random babbling on the few who read my blog. Hopefully I’ll get more blogging done soon, and Brenda tagged me for the ABC meme, so I guess that will be my next post. I want to blog about Jessica moving out soon, too.

Do what ya’ gotta do, BooMama. We’ll be here when you “the Muse” gets ahold of you again. ;)

  14. Hey, I think I know your name. One of your commenters let it slip a while back, or at least I think so.

Now, I’m feeling a little smug because I know something top secret.

It would be humbling if I’m wrong, though. Very lovely name, btw. :)

  15. I know your name Matilda! That really is a beautiful name! ;-)

Loved the post on Alex!!! I had never read that, I LOVED it!!! And how on earth did you keep yourself from gobbling him up at two? His cheeks are so edible in that picture in front of the glass door!

Keep the ‘tens of’ byline, even though it will probably be more like tens of thousands within the month!

  16. And you know what might get those creative juices flowing … A ROADTRIP!
    :-)

  17. BooMama,

I love your blog – you’ll find me here at least once a day.

  18. Cool, I always wondered where the name came from. I’m glad I got to know you better. I’ll be back for more soon : )

  19. You make me laugh alot but that STW had tears streaming down my face. My hubby would have said the same thing in an attempt to quit making fun of that woman. Then I would have written about her, too!

My 8-yr-old was born at St. Vincent’s, too. Alex’s birth story was wonderful – I, too, was cut open and drugged. I, too, thought daddy could do a wonderful job with my new baby while I was put back together.

Keep writing – your book could be REAL stories…. Have your ever read Sleeping At The Starlight Motel by Bailey White? It’s similar to your writing style.

I’ll think of you when I’m in Bham later this week!

  20. I ,too, thoroughly enjoyed the recap. That post about Alex had me sniffling and wiping my eyes several times. Sweet boy & SWEET, FUNNY Mama!

  21. Hello from Wales, UK! I just wanted to say how much I love your blog – it’s at the top of my list of essential daily blog reading! Thanks so much for your writing – you make me laugh, make me cry (in a good way I promise!), and make me think.

  22. since i’m new to reading your blog, i was happy to read the “old news.”

loved the sermon notes book on your wfmw post.
