Oh, Deer*

My cousin Paige always says that when the weather is cool, deer like to move.

Well she wasn’t kidding.

Alex and I were on the way to church tonight when a deer that was in fact on the move came in direct contact with my car, which was also on the move.

Alex and I are fine.

But the deer and the car, they didn’t fare as well.

I still don’t know exactly what happened…Alex and I were riding along, talking about what song we were going to listen to, and suddenly there was this large tawny-colored mass in front of us. The deer tried to leap out of the way, but it was too late, as the front of my car can testify.

After the unfortunate incident occurred, I pulled over to the side of the road and called D to tell him what happened. And when I couldn’t get Alex to calm down – preschoolers are understandably frightened when a disconcertingly large animal comes in direct contact with the front of their vehicle – we turned around and came home.

I looked for the deer on our way back to the house, and he was nowhere to be found. This led me to believe that he may have just been badly bruised (I was only going about 30 mph) and then hobbled off into the woods. I hope that’s the case, at least.

Somehow it makes me feel better to think that maybe he and his deer buddies are sitting around a campfire right about now, re-hashing the whole episode. My deer friend would be wearing a very large Ace bandage around his right hind leg, of course, maybe limping more than is necessary in front of all the lady deer so that he gets a little extra sympathy and some chocolate chip cookies.

It would be really nice if he’d pay my insurance deductible, but I’m probably out of luck on that one. Since the deer have a different currency system and all.

I hope he doesn’t sue!

And seriously, I really do hope he’s okay.

Bless his little deer heart.

  1. I am glad you are both ok. That being said, you know that deer is off bragging to his friends,
“This car came outta nowhere, man. I was like, “What’s up?” and used my mad skills! You think I look bad. You should see the car!”

  2. Yikes! I’m glad you and Alex are okay. Sorry about the car, however, and oh, deer is right. I bet when he got home his wife was all over him for galivanting around at night when he should have been home with the family. ;)

  3. Here in Anchorage if a moose is killed the police will call various charities come and get the carcass to have the meat. The police have a list and the every time a moose dies the next one up gets the call. I don’t know why I find that so funny, shows what kind of a town I live in I guess.

  4. i’m glad you were ok. but i love the witty title.

  5. I wonder how many bucks his deductible is! (sorry…)

  6. I bet you all were terrified! Poor Alex! Poor you! (If it were me, I’d be shaking.) I hope you all are doe-ing better now. (Hey you started it.)

And Melanie and Michelle had me cracking up! :D

  8. Oh my! Glad you all are doing okay. I could only imagine Alex and the horror of witnessing that. At least we know he’s sitting around the campfire with his loved ones! :)

  9. I am so glad to hear you are alright. That’s one of my biggest fears driving around in the Fall. Deer on my bumper.

  10. Oh my!!! I’m glad you’re both ok. ;)

  11. I’m so glad you are o.k.

  12. You’re kidding! I can’t believe it! The weather has gotten cooler there?!

  13. Oh, BooMama, I’m sorry about that… A deer hit me once (I’m convinced that he’s the one who hit me because he appeared out of nowhere – just like your deer) and it really had me rattled for a while. I’m glad you and Alex are both okay…

  14. Shannon Kerr says:

I’m so glad both you and Alex are ok – that must of been an awful experience!

  15. Glad you and Alex are ok, and I hope he’s not too traumatized (he’ll have a neat story to share with his friends).

    LOL at all the puns!

  16. Yeah. . .deer and cars don’t mix. I am always amazed at how much damage they can do. They are so tall and so big and they weigh A LOT.

  17. Glad you and A are ok.

I hate to be the bearer of bad tidings, but if you hit Bambi fairly hard he’s probably DOA. A few years ago I hit one (albeit a really small one) on my MOTORCYCLE and killed the little fella.

  18. Oh my. BooMama, that could have been really bad, but I am thrilled that God protected the both of you. Sorry about the car, but it is replacable, whereas you and Alex are not.

Poor Alex. Maybe you shouldn’t watch Bambi for a little bit too.

  19. oh deer deer deer (you’ve got that going through my head now!)

Not only will he have to pay the big bucks for his deductible, but also his co-pay for an after-hours visit to Dr. Doolittle’s!

(although I am sorry for your run-in with the deer and for Alex – bless his heart, this has got to be one of the funniest things I have read in a while. Is that wrong??!!! lol)

    Blessings,

I guess this means I’m driving us out to eat Friday night…?

  21. Anonymous says:

woops, that last one was from me (Merritt) but I’m at work so it didn’t show up. sorry.

  22. Hey Merritt – I can still drive my car…it’s just not very ATTRACTIVE. :-) But I’ll have D’s car, too – so we’ll be good to go.

I cannot WAIT for y’all to get here.

  23. I’m glad to hear your and Alex are ok!

  24. Not that I’d WANT to hit a deer, but it sounds nice just to have a deer around. Here in good ole’ flat, suburban Dallas, the biggest thing I’d be able to hit (besides a pedestrian, and that’s not so good) would be a possum. And there just aren’t that many good puns to go with possum-hitting ;)

  25. Ok. I’ll just say this (at I just say this- soo glad you are ok) NOW, I’ll just say this.

First car – deer jumped over the hood $4K damage.

Second car – front end totaled, entire herd ran across road

Third car – front end totaled, entire herd.

    Ugh. Deer.

  26. WOW! Glad you’re okay. I had an unfortunate encounter with a deer once myself. They do a lot of damage. Hope your insurance covers your loss on the car.

  27. I just read about your accident. I’m so sorry for you guys…just what you need is an additional stressor added to the house thing, huh? I’ve hit a deer before and they do come out of nowhere. Couldn’t find the one I hit either and I worried about her too.

  28. I’m so glad you are both OK. I hope the deer is OK too. The same thing happened to me once. That deer ran off too. The car was totalled though. That deer was BIG.
