So This Is Sort Of An Explanation

Honestly, I had great intentions of returning from vacation and crafting blog post after blog post. Posts about family, about perspective, about motherhood, about friendship – posts that might make you nod your head as you read, posts that might cause A Single Tear to roll delicately down your cheek.

While Air Supply plays softly in the background.

But seriously, I really did want to use my travel time this last week to pray and think and write – and I imagined that I would come home with blog material for days – lo, perhaps even weeks. It all seemed so promising.

However, what I actually did on the airplane(s) was to dig repeatedly through a Superman backpack in order to find the book / movie / toy of my child’s choice. Also, I read many magazines with colorful pictures of celebrities running errands / going to dinner / walking dogs. I watched two utterly lame movies, and I drank copious amounts of diet Coke. I coated Alex in Purell – because two stomach viruses in the last two weeks are p-lenty, thankyouverymuch. I studied every single page of the latest editions of Southern Accents and O At Home. I remodeled our master bathroom and our kitchen in my head.

And as a result of all that blistering productivity, now that I’m home, I’m dry as a bone in terms of blog material.

Unless you’d like to know my opinion on Jessica Simpson and John Mayer. Because OH, I DO HAVE ONE.

And besides the fact that I’ve fallen behind with writing, I’ve been completely surprised by the recovery time that our trip has required. All three of us have been tired, despite the fact that we had a pretty stress-free vacation. In fact, the only things I have done with some degree of success since we’ve been home are 1) grocery shopping 2) television watching and 3) napping.

In these three areas I have been, I must say, in top form.

All that to say: vacation WORE ME OUT. And the words that it takes to write these things called the blog posts – well, they are not cooperating. They are crossing their arms and rolling their eyes and refusing to move where I want them. I am very frustrated with the words, though I suspect their lack of cooperation has something to do with the fact that I’m, you know, exhausted.

So if I’m not around here much for the next few days, it’s because I’m either sleeping or thinking about sleeping. Alex and I took one of our best naps ever this afternoon, and it was a time so magical that it’s going to be our napping standard-bearer for the summer. I not only want to maintain that level of napping excellence – I want to surpass it.

Doing so will require some serious committment, but I am willing and able to make whatever sacrifices are necessary.

Because goals are important, y’all.

  1. i hear ya sister! I got back on sunday from a week away with the kids and friends in super posh lodging and my brain is not cooperating with my lame efforts to compose some witty stories of all the real fun we did have last week.
The thing is, I was SO relaxed on vacation. So why am I so wiped out now?
Hope your witty writing ways return to normal functionality. At least people read your posts ;)

  2. Yawn….care to share that nap with me?

Then again, maybe I should just go to bed since it is 1 am and all.

But the purse? How did the purse perform? I am trying to decide if I can stand to make my tightwad self buy one to take to Ethiopia.

Mary, mom to many, including 2 still in Ethiopia

  3. I believe it! Even though your vacation was stress-free and very fun, it is also very exhausting in an unexplainable way. You keep on napping and before you know it you will be back to normal! Personally, I think your postings have been great…..hey, you posted while you were ON vacation….what more could we ask for!! :-)

Had to walk the new puppy, or else my day doesn’t have two 3’s in it! Once I’m up it’s hard for me to get back to sleep quickly.
    :-\

  4. I heartily endorse your nappage goal. And go easy on yourself! Any vacation–even a fun one–is tiring and stressful. Re-entry to real life is always an adjustment. We all understand!

  5. What?? No copious dialogue about Paris Hilton’s rough time in jail with not near enough blankets and no pillow?!! I was really looking forward to that. *sigh*

Ah well, maybe in tomorrow’s bloggy goodness! *heh*

    Peace~ Wind

  6. The phrase “Disney Vacation” is an oxymoron at best… you know, like civil war or fried ice cream. You may “get away” to Disney…but the sheer enormity of the trip and the constant decisions required (Dumbo ride or Space mountain? “You go get the fast pass while I take him to the bathroom and we’ll meet at the store by the race cars….”) It’s hardly relaxing. It may be fun. It may be worth every line or $10 bag of cinderella cotton candy. But, folks, it ain’t relaxing. So, gone on with your napping self and we’ll be here when you wake up.

  7. I always need a vacation after my vacation!!

  8. Suzanne says:

High intensity FUN is exhausting…..sleep well, and you can blog about your dreams, your mental remodeling, your thoughts on red china, and all things southern. There IS NO SUCH thing as a blog topic with you…..we’ll supply you with a word, and you will write an hilarious essay on it. Just speak the need and we’ll supply the topic. Just call it the BooChallenge!!=)

  9. Suzanne says:

oops…meant to say “there is no such thing as NO blog topic with you. You make everything interesting and hilarious!

  10. I miss my daily nap. And I do mean DAILY, when Reia was little and I was at home. Ahhh, those were the days.

    Nap on, friend. Nap on.

  11. naps are very, very good. and grocery shopping and tv watching are just as wonderful. something will come to you.

  12. Ah. . .the nap. It truly IS an art form. I can even describe in great detail the very best napping conditions. . .take a rest. Recover. Watch Sandra Bullock movies.

  13. You always make me smile girl, even when complaining that the words won’t come.

Strive for excellence friend, you deserve it! (And Jessica and John? Puh-leeze! That match always confounded me!)

  14. I utterly admire and support your commitment to excellence in napping. That’s my kind of goal! I don’t think it has to be an either/or experience. Nap AND blog – a great combination!

  15. Let me just say, SO DISAPPOINTED in John Mayer. I had so hoped he was a young man of substance…depth, even. A tragedy of epic proportions.

I envy you your naps. Take one in my honor.

  16. I want to hear what you think of John and Jessica. (You see, I’m on a first-name basis with them…)

  17. No fair – now Bossy is on the edge of her seat waiting for your theory of Jessica Simpson and John Mayer! Vacation who?

  18. yup, i agree. i simply must hear your opinion on jessica & john. don’t hold snything back!

  19. Oh how I love good naps!!!

  20. I am so proud of you for setting goals for the summer. If you believe it, you’ll achieve it.

  21. Tammy H says:

BooMama – Between naps you need to take Alex to SoHo sweets in Homewood. I took 5 little girls yesterday and it screamed SUMMER!! We left with icecream cones and bags of candy. Who doesn’t love a place where you buy candy by the pound???

  22. I am voting to hear about the John Mayer/Jessica Simpson situation also!

  23. Napping goals are definitely important. Keep up the good work!

    PS- Who is John Mayer?

  24. I’d say you’re exhaustive vacation has given you plenty of writing material….your post today was inspired!

Traveling is not as easy as some think! Vacations are wonderful, but there is a price to be paid beyond the airline tickets and accomodations. The fact that you are still standing after all that fun….is a miracle! Good job!

BTW: I’d love to hear your opinion on Jessica and John….or maybe Paris…and her release to serve the remaining of her jail time at her humble abode! Who says celebreties are above the law!

    Have a great day!

    Diane

  25. I, too, would like your opinion on John and Jessica! As much as that whole pairing made me scratch my head and ponder the state of the world, I must admit that I’m slightly disappointed in their breakup because I secretly hoped I’d get a glimpse of Jessica when I go to his concert later this month. Just like when I go to Keith Urban’s concert in July I’m convinced that Nicole Kidman and I will hang out and become BFF’s.

P.S. Love your writing, even if it’s just about not being able to write. :)

  26. This has nothing to do with your post, but have you seen this little suitcast for A.?

    http://www.trunki.net/

I saw a demo when I was in NYC last weekend. They’re too cute!

  27. LOL, I hate napping, it makes me actually feel ill.
But vacations do make me tired, because a vacation with kids is just like home with more responsibility and way less help.

  28. All I wanted to know is if you got the rest of the boxes unpacked before Martha came.

  29. So you have blogger’s block. Isn’t that cute?
Yeah, go easy on yourself. Shoot, the few peeps who read my blog get a post once every two weeks if they are lucky. Just like others said, you can write about anything and we’ll smile or choke on our food or drink from laughter.

  30. Its always that way, too. You have to recover from vacations. Weird yet universal.

  31. Your description of the words not cooperating is worthy of a standing ovation.

  32. Jeannette says:

I have not been motivated to do anything since May 11th. I have been to a massage therapist and am just now able to go to my parents home. I hear time and prayer are all we need.

  33. Vacations do that to everyone! – especially vacations with kids, no matter how fun and well-behaved. I think it’s just the sheer amount of stuff that needs to be wrangled that does it to me. We always joke that we need a vacation after going on vacation.

  34. Only you could make “I got nothing” so interesting to read.

    Enjoy them naps.

  35. Two nights ago I dreamed that my hubby and I were hanging out with John Mayer, counseling him about his breakup with Jessica Simpson. So if you want to share with me, go right ahead. I think a lot of folks are in a bloggy dry spell. But it’s all good because the blogs are for us, not us for the blogs.

  36. OK, you nap and I’ll provide the Air Supply tune for your post:

    “I’m all outta love,
    What am I withOUT you?
    I know you were right,
    Believing for SO long…”

  37. I’m tired too…emotionally exhausted is more like it (I explain why in my post today). I may try to curl up with Snuggle Bug for a nice nap when I get off work in 2 hours.

    Enjoy your rest!

  38. Well then … now I’m just plain jealous! Who cares about Jessi-who? or whoever else you have opinions about … I just want to know how you got your child to actually SLEEP with you!

My child is so hyper, that when we try to lay him down with us so he can rest, he’s too busy trying to figure out how he can leap onto my end table without touching me or the pillows between him and wood — or jumping down to the floor, and then getting back up on the bed, getting down again, back up … see where I’m going with my jealousy issues?

  39. I absolutely love reading your posts everyday. I hope you don’t mind, despite the fact that you have no idea who I am, that I tagged you over at my blog for the 8 Things About Me meme. Thanks!

  40. “And the words that it takes to write these things called the blog posts – well, they are not cooperating. They are crossing their arms and rolling their eyes and refusing to move where I want them. I am very frustrated with the words, though I suspect their lack of cooperation has something to do with the fact that I’m, you know, exhausted.”

Liar. Your blog posts seem to cooperating mighty well in my view!

Go take your nap and then come back to tell us all about it. You know… enquiring minds want to know!

  41. Ok, all I have to say is, if THIS is “words not cooperating”, then I am definitely sticking around to see what you come up with when they do. :)

  42. Phyllis R. says:

Your case of “bloggy block” is just as good as anything else you ever write. You might be tired, but your writing NEVER is.
