Some Dinners And Some Movies

Alex apparently has decided to spend the rest of his childhood in Mississippi. Just a minute ago I answered the phone, and he was on the other end saying, “UM, MAMA? I want to stay here FIVE days. And Mama? I went to Martie’s house, and her house was crying.”

“Her house was CRYING?”

“Yes ma’am. It was raining outside, and her house started to CRY, Mama. It was crying in the room where we were playing.”

Martie has a leak in her roof, apparently. I imagine that she was none too happy since she had a new roof put on her house about four months ago.

And something tells me that a certain roof company will have a very dissatisfied – but lively – customer on their hands around 8 o’clock tomorrow morning.

Anyway, D. and I have been soaking up the silence for the last couple of days. I didn’t even turn on the television this morning, and it caught D. a little off-guard since I usually like to listen to my iPod and work on the computer with Food Network on in the background. While I sing.

But today, I just listened to the rain – a strange and unfamiliar sound right now in this part of the country.

Yesterday we decided to go to a matinee and then to throw all carbohydrate caution to the wind and stop somewhere for pizza. We went to see “Knocked Up” – which was hilarious if your idea of humor is to take one core expletive and modify it to fit all parts of speech (look! it’s an adjective! and here! it’s a noun! but here! it’s a verb! because apparently this is what qualifies as wit! and if we yell all the forms of the word in one scene, we’re even MORE witty!).

Even though there were some funny parts (Kristen Wiig, I adore you), we were disappointed. So we headed to Mellow Mushroom for pizza, and there we were not disappointed even a little bit. Delicious diet Coke, delicious pizza – totally relaxing.

In fact, we enjoyed ourselves so much that we decided to do the exact same thing this afternoon. We went to see “Ocean’s 13” – which is fun and enjoyable and way better than “Ocean’s 12” – and then we headed to another pizza place to see how it compared to last night’s pizza place, because we are nothing if not predictable and consistent (plus, prior to yesterday I hadn’t eaten pizza in almost three months. I was waaaaay past due).

Tonight’s restaurant specializes in Chicago-style pizza, and OH MY LANDS IT WAS TASTY. I was only able to eat one piece (IT’S A SUMMERTIME MIRACLE!), so that should give you a pretty good indication of how filling it was. After all, I not only love to eat, I am good at it – some might even say talented.

D. ate two pieces of pizza but barely lived to tell the tale.

And I do not believe we will have pizza for supper again for a very long time.

But D. does want to see another movie tomorrow. I think he’s just so excited that I’m actually going to the picture show as opposed to staying home to watch an episode of “House Hunters” for the sixth time, and he feels like he needs to strike while the proverbial movie-watching iron is hot.

So, do y’all have any suggestions? Just please don’t suggest that “Pirates of the Caribbean” thing, because I am telling you – with my strange issues regarding textures and spores and whatnot, one look at that octopus-type creature would send me straight to the restroom. I could throw up just thinking about it.

Which reminds me.

See this?

starfish.JPG

This is a starfish I saw at an aquarium in California a couple of weeks ago. And I promise you that I had to force myself to stand there and look at it. I thought that if I stared at it long enough, if I took a picture of it and studied it and watched it move across the tank, I would be able to conquer my squeamishness in regard to suction-y, spore-y things.

But it didn’t work at all.

Because even now, just looking at the picture of that HORRIFIC SEA-DWELLING CREATURE THAT IS GOING TO LATCH ON TO ONE OF MY APPENDAGES AND LEAVE MILLIONS OF UNIFORMLY-SIZED INDENTIONS ON SAID APPENDAGE makes my heart race and my knees feel weak and this is exactly why I can’t possibly see that “Pirates” movie.

I am SO normal, aren’t I?

  1. We saw “Nancy Drew” Friday night and loved it…it served to put us on the edge of our seats at times, was mysterious and clean — you just have to like all the characters…even the bad guys are smart and not dopey, kind of mobster-like.
    Have a great day tomorrow!
    Love ya!
    holly

  2. I’ll vote for Nancy Drew as well. And then you can tell me if it was good enough to buy 4 ADULT tickets.

Yep, the kids qualify now as adults. So, our movie days are numbered unles it can be playes on DVD in the relative privacy of our home.

    I’m cheap that way.

I mean, they still to eat now and then … ya know?!

And … thanks for the heads up on Knocked Up. It was a kinda-maybe-iffy-hmmmm on the list. Now? Nothing but a sweet memory.

You two crazy kids have fun now.

  3. I could have all kinds of fun with you, BooMama. I actually like clingy, suction-y, spore-y type creatures. I’ll bet your brother had enough fun when you were growing up with him to do you for a lifetime, though. ;-)

I think I would like to hear a recording of that conversation Marty will have with her roofers. I just know she’ll be perfectly polite, but firm. So very FIRM. Oh, she’ll just be politely firm with them. ;-)

    Love and hugs,

    Diane

  4. we just did the same thing: saw knocked up and ate pizza this weekend. i didn’t blog about knocked up because i didn’t know quite what to say what with all the expletives bouncing around in my head. i was afraid i’d get kicked off the family friendly blog ring. but you summarized it very well. i was amazed as well at how many times they were able to use the f word in a sentence. pure genius.

seems like you’ve hit all the highlights at the movies. you may just have to rent one now.

  5. When Big Daddy and I went out for my b-day last week, we chose Oceans 13 over Knocked Up, and were Oh, So Glad! And I agree with you – I liked it much more than Oceans 12.

Can’t wait to see what you decide to go see next!

  6. Saints almighty I thought I was the only one who got the skin crawlies from things like that! As I was scrolling down the page I saw just the top of that picture and my skin started the goosebumps. Ahh! I also can’t handle things with bumps…that is thanks to the movie Gremlins. ((shudder)) I gotta stop talking about this or I’m gonna be fasting for the rest of the week! LOL

Sorry I’m not able to recommend any good flicks that are at the movie theater. I am amazed if we make it to one movie a year. We’re a pay per view family…it’s so much cheaper. Not to mention I don’t have to worry about getting my chair kicked throughout the whole movie. Don’t know why it is but the theater could be practically empty and the chair kicker sits behind me. EVERY TIME. LOL

  7. One day my sister and I were watching TV and something that was “spore like” or bumpy came on and at the same time we shivered and checked for goosebumps. We looked at each other amazed. We both thought we were just weird that stuff like that creeped us out. I feel sure mine comes from when I was little and one of our chickens (I was a country girl) pulked all it’s feathers out, all that was left was all these little holes. If I remember correctly I threw up right there in the chicken coop! Yuck! But, my sister and I had a nice bonding moment over the creepy thing issue and we’ve laughed about it ever since. Oh yea, that was only last year. You would think after 30+ years we might have known that about each other.

As for movies, we only watch stuff on DVD at home. My girls were gone for 2 weeks this summer and we didn’t get to one movie! I guess I’m getting old, can’t stand to pay that much money, can’t stand dirty movie theaters, can’t stand when I can’t pause the movie because my bladder is about to explode and can’t stand when I’m the only person in the theater and the Mom with 9 kids sits right behind me. I’d rather be home… Maybe I have control issues, I’ll have to think about that one.

    Enjoy your “kid free” days.

    Blessings,
    Georgia Mom

  8. I have not been to the movies in ages, but plan to go tonight with my sister. My kids want to see Nancy Drew…I wonder if it is too suspenseful for younger girls…The scary guy on Pirates gives me the creeps too…but we may end up seeing that one…I’ll just have to look away! So glad your son is having fun and that you two are enjoying the peace and quiet (while it lasts!)

  9. I just saw the movie “Once” and really enjoyed it. If you like music this is the movie for you! The songs are so amazing that I ran home and downloaded the soundtrack. I do have to say that some colorful language laces the main characters’ conversations, though not in a harsh way (if that helps), and with their Irish (the guy) and Czech (the girl) accents, the dialogue is all the more enjoyable.

    http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/once/

  10. You’re right. You can’t go from George Clooney to scary octopus tentacles. It would just be wrong.

And we both used the word “octopus” in our posts today. What are the odds?

    Probably pretty good.

  11. I dunno about movies. I haven’t seen the inside of a theater in lo, these twelve months or so. But I did take your recommendation and got the Windsor Castle DVD via Netflix. My sister and I watched three episodes last night and were mesmerized. Loved the guy in his socks on the table. But I think my favorite was the housekeeper (God bless her for those teeth) and how they practiced packing and unpacking their guests. I think I’ll do that the next time we have company and see if it freaks them out.

  12. Tammy H says:

BooMama – I’m bound to run into you one day! Mellow Mushroom is our favorite. We did go to the 5 points location, but there were too many piercings and tatoos — which led to lots of stares and questions from my girls. Now we go to the 280 location — much more family friendly! No movies here…….. We’re off to meet my Daddy at the water park in Auburn. (Wednesday is grandparents day! They get in free) I may be dreaming of your child-free day in a few hours! :)

  13. You totally are normal. As we walked out of “Knocked Up,” my best friend couldn’t say enough. My response? Eh. And I can’t see Pirates because of that SQUIDFACE GUY OH MY GOSH AGHHHH! Yeah.

  14. You are not strange, I get a little “gaggy” when I see suction cups on an animal too. Freaks me out!

  15. sounds like a nice relaxing time!! yeah for you! Ok, and I have to TOTALLY admit to being JUST LIKE YOU when it comes to things with suction cups. my MOST feared animal is an octopus. They are so NOT RIGHT!! Like, what was God thinking? UGH! It starts with spiders, then crabs… squid, octopus, ugh…. pretty much any weird sea creature totally freaks me out!!!!!!!! I would’ve had a hard time photographing that picture too. My skin would crawl right off my body and out the front door of the aquarium without me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  16. I had that Chicago style pizza once. I was visiting Chicago with all my in-laws. Shortly after I ate the pizza, my bowels exploded and I spent 45 minutes in a public bathroom while my brand new husband, mother and father in law, and brother in law waited for me on the other side of the door. It was humiliating until it hit all of them a few hours later. While we were at the American Girl Museum.

  17. Pirates 3 wasn’t good at all. I wouldn’t bother with it. DH and son both really liked Spiderman 3. We’re seeing Nancy Drew today. :)

  18. Speaking of Food Network, I’m off to buy the stuff I need for the blueberry coffeecake you recommended. I can’t wait to make it.

Totally agree with you on the sea creatures. I don’t know why I’m so in love with the ocean. All I’d do if I actually were near an ocean is sit in the sand and stare at it – I wouldn’t put my big toe in water that might contain any of those things.

Krissy gave Rob a gift certificate to the local “picture shows” for Father’s Day. And he still has the gift certificate for dinner for two at the Texas Roadhouse that Mandy gave him for his birthday last March.

When this wedding is over, he and I are hittin’ the town!

  19. So glad you are enjoying your alone-time!

We saw Ocean’s 13 over the weekend….no creepy-crawly-creatures in that movie. In fact, at the risk of sinning….just really gorgeous men on a giant screen!

I resisted seeing it as I am trying to boycott any celebrity who is a homewrecker, addict, or generally not a good person. Your first thought–then she won’t be seeing many movies, now, will she! But my son and husband wanted to see a movie…and it has been awhile since we had a family night out….so I gave in and put a ‘boycott’ on my boycott!

The story line was a little unbelievable…but the chemistry between George Clooney and Brad Pitt……was perfect! Matt Damon did a nice job of holding his own next to these two giants of industry. Of course, there was Al Pacino and Elliot Gould…who played interesting and different characters. It was entertaining.

    Enough of Ocean’s Thirteen…

    Whatever movie you see…enjoy!

    Diane

  20. Rachel (Memphis,TN) says:

I know you are probably looking for a very safisticated movie suggestion, but all I have to offer is “Surfs Up” We took our kids the other day, it was hilarious. We all enjoyed it.

    Enjoy your kid-free domain

    TTFN!

  21. If your son really does decide to live our the rest of his childhood in Mississippi, you could go see the new Jason Bourne movie which comes out in Aug.
There is nothing that will entice me to the theatre like Jason Bourne! Love a good spy movie, no creepy sea creatures in those. :o)

  22. Balloons, lightning, and now HORRIFIC SEA-DWELLING CREATURES THAT ARE GOING TO LATCH ON TO ONE OF MY APPENDAGES AND LEAVE MILLIONS OF UNIFORMLY-SIZED INDENTIONS ON SAID APPENDAGE.

Thanks, Boo. I needed another freakish phobia. ;-)

  23. little liz says:

A friend in Austin said “Waitress” is cute. I know nothing about it. We saw “Nancy Drew” on Monday. It’s cute, but you can wait for DVD. I’m so jealous of y’all having time to yourselves! Email me when you get a chance.

  24. suzanne says:

Is that thing a mutant starfish or something???? I thought they were small and starlike, with, you know a countable number of digits…….but that one, ewwww……..glad you and BooDaddy are living it up there…..and I think with the likes of your Internet influence, you should write Hollywood and tell them to put out a few more clean, fun, family friendly flicks for us to view!

  25. I personally don’t know of any good movies out right now. With a 13 month old, we normally just ignore all the commercials for new movies and wait for pay-per-view.

I REALLY enjoy reading your blog. Any chance you’ll write a book? It’d be a good one, for sure!

    His,
    Mrs. U

  26. I’d just like to know where you ate that one piece of pizza filled you up?? That is a miracle…not that it filled YOU up, but that one piece of anything was enough. :)

  27. Toni's friend Elise says:

“Mr. Brooks” was interesting. I was a little iffy on the premise of Kevin Costner as a serial killer and William Hurt as the voice in his head; but I went with it because I dig Costner, and because William Hurt had me at “The Big Chill” and “Broadcast News”. It’s a creepy, twisty, suspenseful couple of hours; and I mean that in a good way.

  28. Does it help to know the octopus type thing has about a 30 second part in the 3rd Pirates. And it’s in the background?

If theatres are playing it where you are “The Ulitimate Gift” is a wonderful show. Not a blockbuster movie but very good.

I’ve never had Chicago style pizza. I don’t think any restaurant around here does it. Now you’ve made my mouth water. I can have pizza anytime so it wouldn’t have bothered me to have it 2 nights in a row and have it again next week.

  29. Thanks for warning us about Knocked Up. That was on our list to see next, but now we won’t waste our time. :-) I’m the same way about creepy things, but you really should see Pirates III. It’s awesome and there’s plenty of Johnny Depp to enjoy.

Just wanted to add that I love your blog! I’m originally from Southaven, MS/Memphis, so I know all about the areas you talk about. Except I’m more of an Ole Miss fan. Don’t hold it against me. :-)

  30. hmm. Don’t really know about the movies. I do know I enjoyed the Spiderman movies, so I’d love to check out the new Spiderman…..one day…..

And as far as pizza, I had pizza last night and that’s what I’m working on right now!

Glad you’re enjoying your quiet time!!

  31. We don’t ever see movies in the theater, so I’m no help there. However, I had to say YUM! to the Mellow Mushroom pizza.

  32. Veronica says:

    Hey Mrs. Boo,

I’ve been faithfully reading your blog (which I love!) since it was referenced on the LPM blog, but have never commented. I just wanted to say Thank You! for being transparent about the whole bump/spore thing. Feels goods to know I’m not alone. It amazes my husband that I can eat chips and salsa while totally engrossed in some surgical/emergency type show, but if something comes on that has to do with anything under water, it just grosses me out. Appetite lost, must leave room.

    Weird, I know.

  33. Interesting sea creature phobia. I once had a dream about a mother octopus lying on my belly while I was in my bed. I say “mother octopus” because she was spilling baby octopi by the hundreds all over me. They were very small, but fast and skittery. It was horrifying. I couldn’t even say anything (which is weird because I ALWAYS talk in my sleep), but I kept “eeeping.” My husband heard me and put his arms around me and kept telling me it would be okay. I finally started coming to when he asked what was the matter. All I could say was “The octopuses!” Needless to say, he started laughing uncontrollably at me and said, through peals of laughter, “They’re not real.” But, they were SOOO real! “Are you sure?!” “Yes, I’m sure.” Well, then I finally totally woke up and I burst into loud, raucous laughter right along with him. I’m not sure what was so horrible about a small-ish octopus giving birth to squandrons of tiny, skittery babies on my belly in my own bed, but it sure was funny afterward!

  34. I heard Knocked Up was good. But that was from some teenagers, LOL.

You know, I’ve never been to Mellow Mushroom. We are going to my inlaws tonight (BrookHighland) so if we go out, I may suggest there since they RAVE about it.

  35. We saw KU last week and LOVED it! We’re still quoting it to this day (the non-expletives, of course!). We knew to expect off-color content, what with the title being “Knocked Up” and all…

When we went up to the ticket counter to buy our tickets, I was secretly glad Hubby would be the one who had to say that phrase. Then he remembered that I’d forgotten my jacket in the car, so he went to go get it, and I was left mortified with the realization that I was the one who would have to say it! haha Luckily, he returned in time to ask for the tickets.

  36. my 20 year old daughter said Mr. Brooks was good, but I can’t deal with seeing Kevin Costner as a bad guy, and Nancy Drew is cute, but she loved Shrek 3, although you may want to see that with your little man. What’s the name of the great Chicago Style Pizza Place and is it on 280?

  37. I think A needs to stay in MS until Saturday so you can actually go to opening night of a movie Friday night-I can’t wait to see Evan Almighty…I’m trying to figure out how I can see the movie AND pick youngest child up at camp at the same time…wonder if they’d notice if she was the ONLY CHILD not picked up on Friday night??

  38. Crystal Ward says:

Last night the girls in my water arobics class were talking about Away from Her and said it was fantastic. Not sure what kind of movie it is, but there is a suggestion.

  39. No recs on movies, but I am the exact same way about creepy sea creatures. Hubby forced me to sit through POTC 2 and I just about retched every time that awful and bizarre octopus-man came on. I could throw up right now just thinking about it.

  40. You aren’t missing anything if you don’t see Pirates 3. That’s all I’ve seen lately, and of course, Shrek 3. I don’t think I’ve been to a movie with just my hubby and ages and forever.
    Have a great time.
Glad your little man is having so much fun. The house ‘crying’ was too sweet. (I’m mean as a description, sorry about the leak!): )

  41. I vote for Waitress or Evan Almighty. We saw Nancy Drew last Friday and it was very good, but if it’s just you and your hubby…go for a grown up movie!

  42. Kristen Wiig is GREAT! She does the best understated characters on SNL (Tayer-get cashier, hello!!)

Thanks for the mini review on Knocked Up, I’ll wait for it to come to DVD now!

  43. If you ever want to be pre-warned about a bad movie, check out the Plugged In section of http://www.family.org, where they have excellent movie reviews.

  44. Oh, you are TOTALLY normal … that starfish is what bad dreams … nay … nightmares … are made of! You know — like running down an endless hall, trying to scream, but your voice is silent, and you realize its because the deadly starfish has suctioned on to your throat, strangling your vocal chords….

    Ummm … never mind.

Can I go to NY with you?

  45. There is nothing wrong with House Hunters re-runs. Love them.
