Sunday Morning

Well, Alex has the croup.

Perhaps you’ve heard his stunning impersonation of a seal the last two nights between the hours of midnight and 4 AM.

REALLY? ME, TOO!

So, D. has gone to church all by his lonesome, the sick boy and I are home, and I have set a couple of lofty goals for myself: 1) deciding whether or not to try Flickr 2) cooking something and 3) making sure I have showered by late afternoon so that I can go to church at 6.

Ambitious, aren’t I?

And OH! OH! I’m also going to try to bake a cake – because Mama has given me permission to share her pound cake recipe with the internets. I have two sticks of butter and five eggs coming up to room temperature as I type this. I am understandably thrilled.

This next week is going to be super busy for us for lots of reasons, with Alex starting preschool at the top of the list. Honestly, I don’t have any words to explain my feelings about HOW CAN IT POSSIBLY BE TIME FOR THIS, but last week I ran across a picture I took of the little man back in the spring, and I think it says everything I can’t.

  1. Our kids grow up soooooo fast, don’t they? My little guy is already 17!!!! and sporting a goatee. and my other one is 3 1/2 and I still remember bringing them home from the hospital when they were 3 days old…it just makes me sad. Sorry to hear Alex is sick. Hope he feels better soon.

    I know what you mean about “they grow up too fast” – my son is about to start 7th grade and I can feel him slipping away….Senior year will be here before I know it and then – college and leaving me!!! I can’t bear the thought so I won’t think about it for now. I have a few more years!! (and so do you!)

  9. We’ve been through the croup. Yup, each of my three boys has had it at least twice just this summer alone. *sigh* Praying he’s better soon– for both of your sakes!

    Mmmm… I love poundcake! I can’t wait to see the recipe. I also have a recipe where you slice the poundcake and layer it in a pan with pudding, whipped cream, fresh strawberries and I think condensed milk in there somewhere. I know, it takes away from the pure bliss of the poundcake alone, but it really is yummy and feeds a crowd.

    What a milestone this week for him – and for his mama. It will be great for him – lots of new friends and experiences. I love four.

  13. I hate croup! My oldest gets it several times a year then it triggers his asthma. The seal barking noise totally freaks him out. So many times we have been up in the middle of the night in the bathroom with the shower flowing with scalding hot water. It never fails that he starts taking off his pjs to get into the shower. I always silence a laugh and then let him know he doesn’t have to get into the shower, just breathe the vapors. I wish a speedy recovery to A/Howard.

  15. On that first day of preschool be sure to stuff your pockets with tissues because, trust me, you will cry. I managed to hold it together until I left the classroom. But, man, the second I was out that door the floodgates opened!

  16. I sat here and read this post all teary-eyed. I have been a little weepy on and off (not in front of the boy, of course), because my baby will be starting high school this year. I know how quickly these next 4 years will fly by and I’m just not ready for it. I realize it will be fun and a whole new season of our life. I don’t always look behind, but it really seems like yesterday that I was taking him into his kindergarten class. I will make it, it’s just not always easy to let go!

    I am looking forward to the pound cake recipe as well. I don’t have a good one.

    Lastly, I hate to sound uninformed, but what in the world is “Flickr”?

Hope the first days of preschool go smoothly for both of you – make sure you E.NUN.CEE.ATE his name CLEARLY to EVERYONE YOU MEET THERE, lest he end up going by Howard McTalkerson for the duration. My Alex frequently gets called ALICE. And she, ma’am, is no Alice. She’s done a little growin’ up of her own, lately. Bittersweet.

  18. The Lord’s timing is perfect – evidently you and Alex needed this morning for recovering health – phsyical and mental? Trust you achieve all your lofty goals and eagerly awaiting the BIG MOMENT (sorry for me that is the pound cake recipe – Big A will do fabulously at school!).

  20. Croup is terrible! They just seem so sad barking like that. Wow, Howard – I mean A. is starting preschool. That’s great. It’s sad in some ways, but in about a week you’ll think “gee, it’s kinda of nice having an hour or two to myself”. I got passed that quick. So, quick I now homeschool 3 days a week and work at the girls homeschool academy the other 2 days (MayMay is even in my class!). It’s hard for me to believe that I have a 3rd grader and a kindergartener! Those sweet precious years!

  21. Oh hon, I will seep with you. I am going through the same thing, different age. My son is in the youth group at church. THE YOUTH GROUP!! Here’s my take on it in “NO one warned me”

  22. All 4 of mine will be in preschool in a couple of weeks.

    I am having a hard time being upset about it. Maybe it’s because I know it will be good for all of us. Mommy gets a break and they get structured play around other kids.

    They’ll be at our church and the triplets will have the same teacher as our older son did last year. She is wonderful! All of this makes me feel good about preschool.

    All of my friends that have kids going to preschool or kindergarten for the first time are terribly upset. It may hit me at once, but I’m making plans to get a lot done around here while they are gone :-)

    I hope Alex feels better before he starts school this week.

  25. I had croup every year from the time I was 4 through Junior High. Don’t remember exactly when I grew out of it, but I’m 30 now and don’t get it anymore.

    Just so you know there is hope!!

    Give my best to Alex. Pound cake should cure him. I mean, how hard can you cough with your mouth full?

  26. Give Howard a big hug for me. Croup is no fun. Also, in all seriousness, be kind to yourself when he starts preschool. It’s a smallish step, but it just leads to bigger ones. I blinked my eyes, and my preschooler is now in 6th grade and my baby is now in 4th. Not to sound maudlin, but it does go fast. I’ll send you and email with my snail addy so you can send some pound cake up to me. :) Between you and Barb, I could be fed quite well. LOL

  29. My poor mother never had a chance. My brother and I maybe had the real croup once. But everytime we would get sick we still would make the seal sound. Now that I am 40+, working 40+ hours a week and usually get a chest cold once a year, I nearly throw everyone at work into a panic. They hearing me coughing and beg that I go home. They think I might cough up a lung or something. But for me this is just normal.
    I think the first day that Howard has preschool you should spend it at the coffee shop.
    The next day at the grocery store.
    The third day should be a special lunch for you and D. (you know Howards father)
    Maybe on the forth day you could go to the Steinmart.
    I am just saying, think of all the things that you could get done after you stop crying everyday when you drop Howard off at preschool, to play with all the fun kids and the pretty teacher.

  31. Sorry the little one doesn’t feel well, My daughter used to do the same barking cough, with fever and illness related actions included, turned out that it was finally diagnosed as Asthma.

  32. My Will is only a couple of months younger than your Alex. I was stunned this week to think this is the last year before he starts kindergarten. How did this happen?!! They are getting too big! Sometimes too big for their britches. = )

  33. There is a lot of tissue passing in my neck of the woods as we send our kids off to school next week. All the mommas are more nervous than the little ones. Hope you make it in one piece.

  35. My little 4 y.o. gets croup once in a while. I hate it.
    Blessings on you…you poor tired mama. Not a fun week, I know, but hang in there!
    About them growing up:
    My oldest boy is 17 and a senior this year. I don’t have to get up in the night for croup or anything with him now…but I do stand at the door and watch him drive off sometimes…The time does fly!

  37. When my oldest was born, I wanted to memorize that scripture. So, every time I changed his diaper, I looked into those big brown eyes and quoted it to him. I love that verse and pray it daily over my children.

  38. Let’s just agree on this one thing…WE DON’T WANT OUR KIDS TO GROW UP! I have a 13-year-old boy and an 11-year-old girl who will be in middle school together this year. I cannot believe I am done with the elementary school years. Honest-to-goodness, I blinked, and here we are. And I’m not sure that I like it :( But they are both beautiful, intelligent children and will become adults someday, whether I like it or not. That’s why I try to spend as much time with them as I can. So, I raise my hankie to you, Boomama, as you begin this journey with your little man. Praying for healing for him, as well. :)

  42. Hug that little guy as much as possible while you can and when you can. We loaded a Uhaul and took my baby and his big sister off to college yesterday and I swear, yesterday they were the size of your son. Drugs help (legal of course) but not as much as that scripture. Thanks and my best wishes on his first day.

  43. My baby still has 6 months to go before it even joins us in the World Outside Mama’s Belly – and I can already tell time will go too fast.
    Those verses have always moved me – and I pray them fervently for this child God has given my hubby and I to love and care for.
    I hope Alex feels better soon (and you get some sleep!!)

    and yes! they get big so fast. my little one starts nursery school next month. imagine my trepidation.

I’ve been trying to be the non-crying one, since his dad is acting like our son is going off to boarding school in Switzerland and we’ll only see him twice a year. Or something.   46. Gasp! This other Lisa is my twin: we both have our baby boys starting high school this year (my big’un will be a senior). Yea, verily, I say unto you that the time doth pass too quickly. But they’re great teenagers, and hopefully they’ll be wonderful adults as well.

  49. Those are the same hours Hunter has been coughing up a storm … but during the day? Nada. The trickster!

    Have you tried Delsym? It is the coughing nectar of the gods… well, at least of God. Not “the gods” because I don’t believe in any other god, but that’s just a whole other subject, and right now we’re talking about cough syrup. Bad orange taste, but great medicine!!!
