Alex has done countless things over the last four years that have made me smile from ear to ear.

But tonight? While watching Alabama and Georgia play football? When Alex hopped off of the couch and started screaming “GO! GO! GO! GO! GO!” at the top of his lungs as a running back took off for the end zone?

Oh, internets.

I’m telling you: if there had been some Hershey’s chocolate syrup in this house, I would have poured it all over the little man and then eaten him up with a spoon.

Because the amount of joy I felt in that moment? From the realization that MY CHILD, HE LIKES TO WATCH THE FOOTBALL? And not only that, but HE IS STARTING TO YELL AT THE TELEVISION WITH ME?

It was just a tender, precious time.

And really, the fact that he was cheering for the wrong team was completely inconsequential.

  1. I’m waiting for the post where he screams COME! ON! NOW! SON!

That will require not only chocolate of Hershey’s, but some real live whipping cream on top :)

  2. It actually brought a tear to Hubster’s eye when The Girl shouted her first “GO, BABY!!! GO!!!” during a televised game at the tender age of four.

    sigh.

    They’ve been inseperable ever since.

  3. He needed to yell just a little bit harder for Bama! However, I’m glad that we only lost in overtime, just sucks to lose, LOL.

  4. That is so cute! My kids are that way about college basketball but only because I let them stay up late if UNC wins. It makes them cheer with me LOL.

  5. Yes The Blessings were screamin and a shoutin up in here last night y’all!! Between Arkansas, Bama, and Clemson we were hoarse by the time we fell in the bed last night! Mrs. J~

  6. I tell you, here in the South, we train them correctly and young, right! oh, btw, WAR EAGLE! :o)

  7. exactly who was the right team in this scenario, hmmm? still, congrats on a very precious moment in any SEC home.

  8. Priceless! Those are the moments that should go in the “baby book”…forget the first tooth, first bath!

  9. Our whole family was screaming at the set. We picked the right team though, *wink*! Go Dawgs!

  10. isn’t that fantastic! our little man said his first intelligible words during the last superbowl: GO! GO! GO! he heard daddy yelling them and thought it sounded fun.

  11. Wife has threatened to send me to the hospital if I teach my kids to shout, “Go Gators!” or do the gator chomp motion with their arms.

By the same token, I have my reservations about our kids growing up saying, “Go Vols!”

When it comes to our kids, our house is a carefully-enforced neutral territory.

They’ll learn on their own that rooting for Florida is the only sensible choice.

  12. Tell sweet little Alex that if he wants to cheer for the Dawgs, he can come over anytime. When my 6 yr old was a toddler, right before a UGA game she said, “Mommy, do NOT yell at the Bulldogs”. I, too, have set great game-viewing examples! Hahahahaha!

  13. So sad he was routing for Alabama!! :) Go Dawgs sic ’em! Glad they pulled it out last night!

  14. This is one of those things you need to get done forever! I really want to keep these wonderful moments somewhere that we can look back and remember them.
I just found out about a book a friend of mine published on journaling for your child, and I have a give-away for an autographed copy on my blog.

  15. We have friends who adopted a little baby boy. His first word? “Touchdown!” accompanied by the appropriate ref gesture.

  16. Having family in Tuscaloosa, we were rootin’ for the Crimson Tide. Dang…I wish they would’ve pulled that out!

    Next week– Hook’em Horns!

    I love the football!!!

  17. And why was there no Hersey’s chocolate syrup in the house?

  18. I’m just so proud, I could bust my buttons.

  19. HIlarious…but may I say…I am so sad about the game.

  20. I so can relate, my son’s been a football nut since he was yeh high, and till this day he still screams at the TV – for the wrong team- because now he is a decision making kid counting the odds against my teams.
Girl you won’t believe how much I spend on jerseys for different NFL teams!

  21. I hope he was cheering for ALABAMA, not that I’m necessarily a Bama fan, I’m just for whoever is playing Georgia. Still a tender moment.

  22. Sorry, BooMama, I’m a Georgia girl! Dawgs WON!!! Whoo, Whoo, Whoo!!! LOL My children and I all fell asleep while Hubs and My Mom watched all the way to the end! Sorry, gotta root for my DAWGS! So glad that A has gotten started on the right foot! ;-)

  23. You are raisin’ him right.

  24. Absolutely inconsequential that he rooted for the opposing team. Now you simply need to purchase a foam brick, and he’ll be all set.

  25. I’m with Elizabeth- where’s the Hershey’s???

  26. I would have had to put my kid in the freezer for an hour and then use Magic Shell. I like it much better than Hershey’s. But I see what you are saying. LOL ;)

  27. I think this is definitely a “special day” for you that must be recorded. Mark the calendar or the big boy book. :-)

  28. Giggling uncontrollably at Sprittibee’s comment.

    Go Dawgs!

  29. Ah, the sweet moment of joy I hope to experience in a few years…

  30. Yeah, I’m totally with you there. After 3 years of sports like baseball (nice, but uninspiring), basketball (which I’m just now getting into), and soccer (blech), my son is playing flag football this season. And oh my word, how my mama heart swells watching that!!! I almost have fainting fits watching MY BOY be quarterback!!! Sigh. Good times, good times!

  31. I love watching football with my boys – they are so funny!!
Girl you don’t keep Hershey syrup in the house – man it is a staple over here. Anything chocolate can be found in our house :) I love me some chocolate
By the way I am still singing from the service this morning!
“Just as I am, without one plea but that thy blood was shed for me, and that thou bidst me come to thee, O Lamb of God, I come, I come …”
    Love,
    Kim

  32. Oh, I can’t wait for that!

My husband is out of town so it was just my little guy (16 months) and me watching the Seahawks game today. (Go HAWKS!) It was a nailbiter and when we scored at the last minute I was cheering so loudly and jumping up and down like a mad person. My son ran over to me and lifted his arms up, laughing. He wanted me to pick him up. We danced around “WooHOOing” and he was almost as excited as I was.

I can’t wait until he actually knows what we are celebrating!!

    PS: Go HAWKS!!

  33. My husband is still depressed over that game.
I think our daughter could say “roll tide” before she could say mama.

  34. I remember it used to break my heart when our boys would leave the room 5 mins. into a game. I felt like I must have failed them as a parent. (Now I realized they were just frightened by their crazed and seemingly angry parents screaming at the TV screen!)

They are now 13 and 18 and stay put for the entire game. I’m proud. You know…trainin’ up a child in the way, blah, blah, blah. ;-)

p.s. – I am a Gardner-Webb graduate. Thanks for takin’ it easy on us. ;-)

  35. Too bad Alex wasn’t pulling against the Tide like a good MSU Bulldog should. :)
I didn’t get to watch that one, but I was pulling for Georgia all the way. Growing up a State fan in North Alabama left its mark on me. Those fans are mean, I tell you! I just can’t help but hope that they lose! I’m just glad that our Dawgs won. Sounds like you and Alex have years of football-watching fun ahead of you!

  36. Go Dawgs!!! At least he knew the right team to root for! The winning one, ;)!

  37. I know… I should have started earlier. My girl looks at me and says in a quiet voice, “Mom, you’re too loud!” to which I respond that when she has her own house, she can make the rules about yelling at the tv.

  38. Yes, those are tender moments. Like when we took our nearly-two-year old daughter to her first high school football game of the season (her second season!) a few weeks ago, and she finally learned how to “chop” for herself. :0) (We’re the Warriors, so it’s like the Tomahawk Chop.)

I wish I’d had my video camera!

  39. That is so cute! My little guy is a football fan too, much to my husband’s dismay (Oronzo prefers soccer). It’s up to me to sit and watch football with Snuggle Bug.

  40. After raising up our children in the way in which they should go (ie: loving our Auburn University) via dressing her up in AU cheerleader outfits and him in a CUTE AU football jersey, we were pleased as pie that Stinkerbell yells at the tv with her very unique “come on boys! you can’t cut ’em any slack!”

    War Eagle!

    :-D

  41. Just reading this makes me want to cry… not just because of the sweetnesss, but because of the sheer fact that you and “all” my family, including my mama, are there… in Alabama… watching wonderful football games… and I’m not. The women in my family enjoyed an evening of eating barbecue and screaming at the tv Saturday night, while I’m stuck out here. Sad times, sad times.
