All Dwight’s Heroes Are Table Tennis Players

Tonight’s episode of The Office made my heart break just a little bit. There was something so touching and sad about seeing Michael confronted with the harsh reality of different areas of his life: his job performance, his relationship with Jan, his perception of being “groomed” for the corporate office.

But to see him smile his way through it all, ever-loyal to Dunder-Mifflin, even shaking his big boss’ hand at the end of the episode – well, I just wanted to hug him. Two or three times.

Bless his heart.

But in true Office form, the writers still found a way to bring us the funny, even if there was a complete and total absence of Andy, and I’M SORRY, BUT WHERE WAS HE?

My favorite parts:

1) Kelly Kapur clarifying the difference between “talking trash” and “talking smack”
2) Pam and Kelly having a stand-off at the restroom door
3) “That’s what she said.”
4) More tomorrow – XOXO, Michael
5) Dwight and Mose’s ping pong match at the end of the episode

What surprised me the most about tonight’s episode was how protective I was of Michael, how mad I was at Jan for betraying his trust, and how, at the end of the day, I probably have some co-dependency issues because I just want for Michael to work out all this stuff and be happy and good at what he does and get real phone calls instead of the make-believe ones that Pam pretends to have written on Post-It notes.

I love this show.

See y’all in the comments.

  1. I’m so bummed because this is the last new one to air until the writer’s strike is over! I loved Kelly tonight- she was a different kind of annoying, a much better kind. She made me laugh out loud every time she was in a scene.

  2. I read today that this was the last new episode for awhile with the writer’s strike. I’m just beside myself.
    Here are my favs.:
    1. Michael not wanting Tobey in the hearing.
    2. The diary was great, especially talking about Ryan.
    3. Pam and Kelly not being able to play ping pong.
    4. Michael’s need for post it notes.
    5. Shoving Tobey’s lunch tray off the table.

  3. I felt so bad for Michael during the deposition. Especially hearing what Jan wrote about him. I wonder what was going on in his mind!

I love that Pam and Kelly couldn’t play ping pong. That’s totally how I’d be.

Hehe the post it notes cracked me up. I love that Pam humors his idiosyncrasies. :-)

  4. Oooooh – Office talk! I love the Office. Michel sometimes tugs at my heartstrings, but then he’ll do something so completely awkward and awful and Michael that I snap out of it. But they are really playing up his sympathetic side this season. This season has felt uneven to me so far (maybe all the 1 hour eppies throw the timing off?) but this was a great ep.

  5. I haven’t watched the entire episode yet (missed the first ten minutes), but I did enjoy what I saw. I was very town by everything in the deposition because I love Michael and Jan together as they are now, but I was so sad for him when he was hearing about what she thought of him before that and also about how he wasn’t being groomed for corporate. My heart broke a little for him.

I am such a huge Steve Carrell fan…did you see his new movie Dan in Real Life? It is excellent…different for him, but really good just the same!

Now, if only this pesky strike would be over…

  6. That would be “torn” by everything in the deposition. Can’t…type…this…early…

  7. I must have similar issues to Boomama because I spent the whole time last night (and again this morning bless you tivo) feeling so sorry for Michael and wanting him to do well in the deposition, and on his job!! My heart broke when Jan threw him out to the dogs…and I even wanted Jim to become a table tennis champion!!

Okay I might need some help……
    Mrs. J~

  8. Poor Michael. When he walked into the cafeteria and everyone he saw was reading a copy of his diary… so sad. Yikes- the emotional attachments I have to these characters is pathetic! The funniest part to me last night was Kelly- what a riot.

  9. Hiya Buddy!

  10. I loved the notes. I am going to go all the way back to season 1 and watch, I just became an Office follower this year.

  11. This is totally off the cuff, but there are several bloggers talking about your annual “Tour of Homes” for Christmas. I would love to participate! Can I sign up? : )

  12. Yes, that Michael is such a jewel. I did start to tear up a little when he remained so loyal to the company while his little heart must have been breaking. And the “table tennis” part made me want to go out and buy a ping-pong table for Christmas! Since we don’t have a DVR or TiVo (I know), I had to jump back and forth between Grey’s and The Office. If I had to choose, The Office would be my top pick, hands down. Love it!!!

  13. Everything I felt about Michael has been said – there’s something so adolescent about him, it makes me want to hug him and smack him up the back of his head all at the same time.

But Kelly and Pam at ping-pong made the night for me – with Jim and Darrel looking so unimpressed and leaving to play upstairs. I laughed and laughed.

  14. The smack talk was HILARIOUS!! I will be using all of it when I playping-pong with the fam at Christmas ;-)

  15. I loved the moment I thought PERHAPS Tobey and Michael might become friends… only to see Michael shove the tray off the table.

All the sudden I feel a bit outta sorts, though… many of my faves were the tender/sad moments. Like “Chinese was my cheap option…Fast food is fine.” Even typing it I have to sigh.

I’ve seen The Power Of The BooMama… could you pretty please start a fundraiser for the writers so we can end the strike and bring back a little Andy and Creed?

  16. After watching that I just feel the need to wrap Michael up in a protective cocoon and protect him from the likes of Jan.

I have to say one thing that I really enjoyed was last week when Michael and Jim are talking at the “party”–it really seemed like we saw Steve Carrell instead of Michael Scott.

  17. kelly singing, “hey, hey, you you, i don’t like your boyfriend” and dancing

  18. XOXO Michael, totally cracked me up. It was kind of a bittersweet episode though. Those writers are really great.

  19. I love Pam’s heart…the willingness to give Michael lame notes…even feeling bad for Dwight over the Angela break-up. She loves to play a good joke, but does realize people have feelings.

Note to writers: WE NEED MORE ANDY (and all of his hysterical singing bits).

  20. Janet (aka JT) says:

I was feeding the new baby last night during The Office, and let me just say that I was fighting back tears several times. It just made me sad.

And there just may be a little bit of Michael in me: (currently fighting the urge to insert his popular “that’s what she said” line here) but when they read his diary and he ended the entry with “more later, xoxo, Michael,” it reminded me of my own diary I kept as a child. My middle child found this diary recently, and thought it was hilarious that when I didn’t have an entry for the day (apparently discipline wasn’t my strong suit as a child either), I’d write, “don’t worry—I’m ok.” Because the last thing one wants is the fear that her diary is concerned about her well-being and wondering why she didn’t write an entry.

It completely took away the delusions I had that at one point, before the stresses of adulthood, I was an intelligent, normal child.

  21. “Hi ya, Buddy” got the ball rolling last night. That was classic Michael wanting to keep the client on hold to talk to “a friend (Ryan).” Now we know why we love him so much.

The two minutes Michael spent with Toby were priceless.

Kelly and Pam’s lack of table tennis skills was funny but the bathroom backdown made the episode for me. You could see that one coming a mile away…

  22. My favorite was when the court reporter read back the deposition
“Were you under her the entire time?”
    “That’s what she said”
    and Michael says
“Well the delivery’s all wrong, she butchered it.”

    Re: Ryan in the diary
“He’s just a very attractive best friend.” (I can’t remember the exact adjective but Tobey’s stifled laughter was pretty funny too!)

  23. I remember laughing outloud alot last night.

-Loved the post-it note thing at beginning, typical Michael & love it

    -That’s what she said…always funny

-When Dwight played Jim and returned the ball while not looking and checking his phone

-Pam & Kelly trying to get past 2 volleys

-“You can screw your company, but you don’t screw your girlfriend” (I don’t know if I got that quote exactly right)

I felt bad for Michael, but I knew he would be loyal to his company.
I liked that it featured Kelly in a different manner. I think it is neat that she is a writer, so surprised when I found that out. She wrote my fav episode, The Injury. I found out she has a blog with some other writers. She signs her entries as Mindy Ephron http://mindyephron.blogspot.com/
    It is funny stuff!

  24. Remembered another one I laughed at:
Kelly singing-“Hey, Hey, you you! Your boyfriend sucks at ping pong”

  25. OMG…the entire episode was great! I’m glad after 3 seasons the show is still so HILARIOUS! I love Michael even though he’s a weirdo most of the time.

  26. Love the post it notes… I kinda do the same thing for my boss.

    And poor Toby.

  27. “Hey hey you you I don’t like your boyfriend! Why why cause cause cause he sucks at ping-pong!” HILARIOUS.

  28. I heart that show so much! Tivo it each season!

  29. I finally just watched it tonight, knowing that it was the final new ep for a while. Ya sucked me in, BooMama! It broke my heart a little too.

  30. This is the second episode this year that has made me almost cry for Michael; what’s up with that?

It was funny to see Michael being Michael at the deposition. Haha.
