Yay, Beatles. Again. For the second week in a row.
Yay. Woohooyay.
Don’t I sound enthusiastic?
Amanda Overmyer – “Back in the USSR” – I still think those pants from last week are rockin’. In case you were wondering. And does anybody remember Billy Joel’s version of this song? I haven’t thought about it in years, but I found myself wishing for it a little bit tonight. I think Amanda is great, and I’m officially a fan, but I think this was the wrong song for her – she seemed bored, almost. And I think she’s doing the same thing over and over each week. At this point it’s time to switch it up and surprise us just a little bit. I still don’t feel like I’ve really heard her sing.
Kristy Lee Cook – “You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away” – Okay. This is tricky. Because she started off really, really well – to the point that I was thinking we had a comeback of gigantor proportions. But as soon as the band kicked in, she got a little off-pitch and seemed to lose her footing. It was better at the end, though – and even with the rough parts, it was leaps and bounds better than last week.
David Archuleta – “The Long And Winding Road” – So that? Was GREAT.
Michael Johns – “A Day In The Life” – I don’t think there’s ever been an Idol contestant I’ve wanted to enjoy more than I want to enjoy Michael Johns. But y’all? Week after week I feel like he’s just a little bit short of being really memorable. And tonight was the same sort of deal. I wanted him to just BREAK OUT and wow us, but it felt like both he and the song were sort of scattered. And that makes me a little bit sad.
Brooke White – “Here Comes The Sun” – For what it’s worth – and it’s no reflection on Brooke – I think that this song is really, excruciatingly boring. And Brooke seemed just a wee bit uncomfortable without having a guitar or a piano or anything in between her and the audience. But still. I love her voice. And furthermore, I thought that her dress was absolutely adorable.
David Cook – “Daytripper” – I could have done without the Roger & Zapp-like voice box action, but I thought this performance was pretty memorable. However, I think he has to be careful not to look like he’s doing his very best Daughtry impersonation week after week. I think he’s going to have to mix it up a little bit next week and show us that he can do something different.
Carly Smithson – “Blackbird” – This is actually one of my favorite Beatles songs – thanks to Sarah Mclachlan’s cover of it back in the early 90’s. And while I liked this performance, I didn’t love it. I don’t even know if I can explain why. I think that she’s super-talented, but she didn’t do anything tonight that blew me away.
Jason Castro – “Michelle” – I’m worried before he even starts because I think it’s dangerous to sing a song that has different languages in it when you don’t in fact speak those languages. And like “Here Comes The Sun,” this song is just a little boring to me. And because it’s a little boring, I don’t think Jason’s personality came through. I would have loved for him to do a crazy new take on it – really rock it out – but as it stands, it was just a’ight for me.
Syesha Mercado – “Yesterday” – I think this was her best performance so far. Hands down.
Chikezie – “I’ve Just Seen A Face” – So the arrangement was a little strange and surprising – to say the least – but hey, I wasn’t bored. Which is more than I’ve been able to say the rest of the night. And in the end, I really liked it.
Ramiele Malubay – “I Should’ve Known Better” – Hey y’all? I totally think that Paula picked out her outfit. I really do. And as for the singing, she still doesn’t seem entirely comfortable on the stage. She did better this week, but I felt like she got lost in the song.
Should go – Ramiele
Will go – Ramiele
Best of the night – In all honesty, y’all – IN CASE YOU DIDN’T NOTICE – I was bored out of my mind tonight. And it felt like the contestants were in the same boat that I was. But if I have to pick the best, I’d say David Archuleta.
Here’s to hoping that next week is better.
And if you want to link to your specific post about tonight’s Idol, just add the URL for your specific post to the Mr. Linky below. Thanks, y’all!

hey sophie! while we were watching i was thinking, ‘i wonder what boomama will say about THAT??!!??’
and now we know. thanks. another fun way to share the journey!
and i fully agree, esp about david cook…ewwww. that smugness has gotta go.
david archuletta — i can so hear him already on the radio.
brooke — LOVE her!! no matter what. i LOVE the SUN!!
bye bye, ramiele
love you!!
I wasn’t overly impressed either, but I did like David Archeletta’s “The Long and Winding Road”. My husband, however, thought he was too young to sing that song. He said it should have been “The Short and Straight Sidewalk”.
Hmmm…Interesting. I had a different take on many of them, yet I agree with your points on most all of them. Evidently, I’m of two minds! Or perhaps I’m only of 1/2 mind…and I agree, it was kinda boring tonight. Except for David A. That kid is a genius.
Meant to tell ya, love the new look. Love it. I thought of you on Sunday, too, when I looked down and saw I was wearing the same spring colors and thought, “I look like a blog.” (How funny.)
Wow. It’s good to hear from a long-time watcher that tonight was boring. I wondered if it was just because I was watching it by myself while my husband diligently worked in the kitchen on the things I was SUPPOSED to be doing :) You know, feeling guilty makes watching TV not as fun.
This was the first full ep I have watched all season. I was a bit disappointed. Kind of wishing I had seen last week’s Beatles since apparently they all did so much better then.
That Brooke White. She’s just too cute for words.
Thank you for letting me go to bed early (it’s sitting, paused after Michael Johns, now I don’t have to watch the rest of it) *yawn*
Great recap :-)
Painful. Though I love The Beatles…one week was enough for me. And for them.
But I still love Brooke & David A!!
Hi Girls! I’m in! This was fun!!
Here’s to hoping that next week’s mentor is way more exciting!!

I agree with you about Michael Johns, I keep wanting and waiting… I am a huge
David Cook fan BUT I never watched on Daughtry’s season so I haven’t got that to compare to. Maybe I’ll look him up on youtube. It was way snoozy tonight I’m ready for a different genre in a huge way. xoxo melzie
LOL Moriah I saw some shoes one time and totally thought “oh look Boomama’s blog colors on a shoe”! xoxo melzie
I agree on the boring tonight. I think my head is stopped up though, because I seemed to hear everything different than the judges, and I usually do better. Oh well. I think they definitely should have left it at only one week of Beatles!
I muddled through a migraine all day and thought maybe it was just me. I was BORED most of the night and found myself wandering around Facebook while I watched and blogged. Glad it wasn’t just me.
I’m thinking this is Kristy’s week to go. I love David A- he is just adorable and that kid can SING! I love Brooke too, even more so now that we all know she can’t dance. I can relate.
You know what? I didn’t even watch tonight, because I SO am not a Beatles fan!
So instead, I cleaned out our four year old’s room and went through all his toys and clothes (preparing for spring and being 5 in July!)
Sophie, I’m so glad to read your take on it, though :) Thanks for sharing!
Yes…about Michael Johns. You wrote what I was trying to think…? Anyway, I kinda think Kristy is going bye this week, too…
J
Mine’s up but it’s about as boring as tonight was.
I thought tonight was incredibly boring too. I think doing the Beatles again was not a good choice. I mean they are the Beatles but YUCK. I agree is most of your opinions but think I liked Brooke better than you did. I just love her. I actually liked the song too, she’s just so darn simple and sweet and all that feely good stuff. And I loved David Cook tonight too. I feel EXACTLY the same way you do about Michael Johns….time to bring it brother. I love his voice but his performances have been YUCK. I want to like him so!
David? Cute and sang well but I found the song a bit boring.
I think you are right on about who needs to go though!
Lovin your Idol blog.
julie
I finally did my own AI post. Thanks for the opportunity to post my link.
I have a theory that the whole reason they did Beatles songs two weeks in a row is to help Sir Paul fund that costly divorce settlement.
It’s all a vast media conspiracy.
Both weeks were just dreadful for me! I HATE the Beatles. Always have, always will. David A. is from my current state. Have to love him! Kristy is from my home state. I think she is adorable, but not very good. She needs to go home to her horses.
Ay Caramba. Too much Beatles. And I missed half of it! Wah wah wah.
I think two Beatles nights in a row was overkill, frankly. I wasn’t bored, but it wasn’t the best week in Idol Land. And I pretty much agree with your assessments. Except I picked Kristy Lee to go home.
Boring; I agree. No stand outs for me. I REALLY loved Kristy, though. I hope she stays! And I pretty much want Brooke to move in across the street and be my best friend.
I completely agreed with everything you wrote. And who at AI had the bright idea to do TWO weeks of Beatles songs? Let’s move on already!
Yep, BORING.
Michelle is the ickiest song ever…sorry Paul and John! B.O.R.I.N.G.
I heart Brooke though….I even liked her cute comments to the judges…she doesn’t take herself serious. I dig that.
Yawn……hope for better next week.
Kelly S.
We had very similar opinions of the performances for the most part. Come check it out (Mr. Linky!)! :)
Go AI!
Evidently Tuesday nights are going to be full of conflict for me. Evidently my DVR had to choose between AI, One Tree Hill, & Dancing With the Stars, since it can only record 2 at a time. AI lost out. It appears that I didn’t miss much. Whew!
I was bored too. I hate to admit this for fear I will be locked away in some American pop culture prison – but I don’t like the Beatles. I don’t like any of their songs so the last 2 weeks have been EXCRUIATING for me.
I hope they will pick a better theme for next week.
Love your recap!
Does anyone else think that Jason C. looks and sounds like a young John Travolta? He talks like Vinny Barbarino. Seriously.
oh..is it over? I must have fallen asleep….
Snoozer! I write before I read you and we certainly agree on that!
WHile I do like the Beatles, I, too, was incredibly bored last night. I was happy to hear Simon finally say it was probably a mistake to do the Beatles again…..ya think?!!?
A couple of thoughts I had:
I think Amanda Overmeyer yells alot and I for one would like to hear her sing – and be able to understand the words she is saying.
And Brooke did look really awkward up there without any instruments.
Amanda – always looks bored….and only sings about 5 notes
Kristy Lee – blows….needs to go..
David – recovered from last week
Michael Johns – will be the one to go…even though Kristy blows more
Brooke – I missed my favorite because the littlest one “needed to poop” but just sat there in the potty room talking about Oscar the Grouch on his potty seat. (he’s almost 3)
David Cook – my wife thinks I want to not like him, but him and his “emo-over” hair do…sheesh…now I was waiting on him to bust out some “Bad Medicine” from Bon Jovi…or “Livin’ On A Prayer” because he ain’t cool enough to play Roger Troutman…(Godresthissoul)
Carly – if she had ever heard Dionne Farris’ version of Blackbird, she would have picked a different song….I’m tired of the Celine Dion wannabe-ness…..just because she has cool ink, does NOT make her cool…..she can go
Jason – will survive, but it wasn’t great….I haven’t enjoyed his Beatles songs….hopefully they’ll have a better theme next week
Syesha – was good
Chikeze – FO’ SHEEZIE!!!!
Ramiele Malubay(you do you’re gonna clean it up) – she’s so dang forgetable……I was putting kids back to bed (again) and missed her, but whatever….don’t like her very much anyway….to whispery when she sings
SO, in all honesty, I gave up on American Idol after season 3, but I love that you know Shawn Colvin’s cover of Blackbird. Her album Cover Girl is one of my favorites of all time…great college day memories.
I agree with you that Ramiele will probably go – and I cracked up over your comment about her outfit. When I was watching I was thinking it looked like something Paula would wear. LOL!
This is my first visit; I’m likin’ it. :o) Yeah, this week was kind of a snoozer, but I think it is definitely evident who’s at the back of the pack and who’s at the front, even on a bad night like last night. I like something about each person, but I think some of them have to go (well, duh, but you know what I mean): even some that I really want to go further. Unless things change, I think the top two boys will be David A and David C, and the top two girls will be Brooke and Carly.
I totally agree with your assessments of the night. Snoozer. I think the USSR song was by Billy Idol, right? Not Billy Joel? I was totally wishing for that version too!
Totally agree with you about Michael Johns. He’s so good, but he’s just not standing out. Maybe he needs to perfom in his tennis outfit next week.
Also,
last week it was “half and halfer”
this week it was “cooliosis”
Randy’s trying pretty hard to come up with some new stuff this season.
Thanks for the update and letting us like too!
I love love love the new layout!!
My favorites for this season are David Archuleta and Brooke White. I want to like Michael Johns too, but find him very boring. I feel like so many of this season’s contestants are such posers.
My pick for who should go-Kristy Lee Cook
Hey! Where you been!?!?!
Kidding. Get it? Because I have been the bad blogger? Not you? Funny.
Aaaaanyway, I love the new design! And I love some Boo! It’s funny that you say you want to love some Carly Smithson but can’t, because I have had the same issue. I wrote about it tonight.
I think Kristy Lee Cook will go. For the love. She must go.
Jamie
Hey Girl! Well first off, we finally stepped into the 21st century and got ourselves some DVR last week. IT ROCKS! So I can now faithfully watch the show instead of catching it whenever we’re home, which is approximately never.
And I have to say that last nights performances were exceedingly underwhelming. :P First of all, WHAT??? Beatles again!!! And don’t even try to act like there’s a difference between last week “Paul McCartney and John Lennon’s songs” and this week “The Beatles’ songs” not even Simon thought there was a difference when he commented after (I think) Chikezie’s performance and said “maybe we shouldn’t have done the Beatles 2 weeks in a row.” Ya think!!!
I agree, David A. was the best performance of the night, though I just don’t feel a connection with him as an “Idol”. He seems like a sweet kid, I’m just not feelin’ it. Michael J. needs to dig deep, because he could really pull some amazing performances out. And perhaps Paula should have given Ramiele a few tips to go with that outfit. She looked like walking around on the stage was difficult. Not sure if it was the corset or the heels, but it was distracting.
And now I’m going to go watch tonight’s show and see who was voted off. I’m going to go watch it now at 10pm. Because I can. Because I have DVR … hallelujah! :D
When did this adorable new look happen over here? Jules outdid herself – I love this!
Totally agree about Amanda and since I just watched the results, I wasn’t surprised to see her go. I was sure surprised to see Carly in the bottom three.
My favorite is Brooke White. I love everything about her, especially that she’s just so dang nice.
So happy to find an AI blog – and so many more! I thought that this week’s show was boring because I watched it via YouTube – guess not. There was not one performance that stood out. Oh well.
Ramiele’s outfit was like total Paula, like from her 80’s closet. Like totally.
Completely agree with everything you wrote. Hope tonight is way better.~~Dee
