Picture, Thousand Words, Etc. And So Forth And So On

So basically it was so hot here today that even the squirrels had to lie down.

I’M SO NOT KIDDING.

And I’m really trying not to be that person who TALKS INCESSANTLY ABOUT THE HEAT, but MY LANDS, PEOPLE, it was somewhere around 240 degrees in the Home Depot parking lot this afternoon.

But clearly that is an exaggeration. Because obviously 240 degrees is impossible.

In reality the temperature was only, like, 193.

Which is totally cool and refreshing in comparison.

My cousin Paige and her little boy are here for a few days, and we are having the best time watching these two cousins chase each other up and down the hallway while they make truck noises.

Tonight I made breakfast for supper, and as I watched those boys dig into their grits with great enthusiasm, I couldn’t help but think that Papaw Davis – their great-grandfather they’ve never met – must be looking down from heaven and grinning from ear to ear at the sight of them laughing at each other while they ate their bacon.

Come to think of it, Papaw Davis would be beside-himself-wild about every single one of his great-grandchildren. But I can’t talk about that anymore or I’ll cry.

So now I’m going to watch “The Next Food Network Star” and “Design Star” and if “Nashville Star” comes on I’ll watch that, too, because I’m pretty much a sucker for any sort of reality-esque TV with the word “Star” in the title.

As always, my tastes are terribly sophisticated.

Hope y’all have a great week!

    Hi Sophie!

What a great picture!! We love breakfast for supper, too, especially when it’s too hot to cook! Have fun with your family…. K

  2. Those two little boys have the faces of angels!

  3. shelly tomlinson says:

Me too, honey. Me too. Miss my papaw something awful. There is nothing like breakfast for dinner on a Sunday night.

  4. Okay, I know why God didn’t give me sons. I couldn’t discipline a boy with eyes like that. And those LASHES. And those CHEEKS. I could just eat him.

  5. What great snapshots of your life today. Of course if you had taken a picture of the Home Depot parking lot, your camera would have, like, melted in that kind of heat! Bye-bye camera!

And the mention of grits nearly made me bawl like a baby…I miss me some southern food.

But the weather? It is supposed to be “plentiful sunshine and 68 degrees” tomorrow. If it weren’t for your lovely driveway, I’d say you should move to Colorado (cause your driveway alone would be worth a million dollars here–not kidding at all) :)

Enjoy your cousin and your little cousin, too!
    Love,
    holly

  6. My comment just disappeared–wah.

    I think I said this:
What lovely snapshots of your day! It’s a good thing you didn’t try to take a picture of the Home Depot parking lot or your camera would have melted in all that heat. Bye-bye camera!

Your grits comment nearly made me bawl like a baby. I do miss me some southern food! But not the heat.

If it weren’t for your lovely driveway, Sohpie, I would say you should move to Colorado! Only here your driveway alone is worth about a million dollars (I do not kid).

    Enjoy your company!
    Love,
    holly

  7. Of course I meant Sophie :) sorry about that!

  8. its 240 degress here in Lubbock Tx also and I just finished watching the food network star… not usually a reality t.v. fan but guess my tastes are getting more sophisticated. Actually had to have a painful converstation with my husband about grits this a.m. while watching Paula Deen make cheese grits.. hubby thinks he hates grits, I think he really hasn’t had good grits…it ended with him saying he hasn’t tasted them in 3o years and won’t again…I assured him when he is in the nursing home and I’m feeding him I’ll be feeding him grits just to bug him…

  9. I never have an intellegent comment when you post a picture of Howard because – my good grief – he is adorable!

  10. I flipped between Food Network Star and “From the Ground Up” on FLN. And I watched Design Star.

    High entertainment value, that.

  11. BooMama-I hate to admit this to you because you may decide not to like me. I like most all southern cooking, but I feel the need to be honest…
I DON’T LIKE GRITS! Their gritty.

  12. I love Breakfast for Supper. My favorite is to have biscuits and chocolate syrup. Yum!

FYI…Nashville Star starts tomorrow night. I don’t think it will be as good as Idol, but what else can you watch in the summer. There’s a good idea for a blog post…What to watch in the summer. I’d love to hear your thoughts because to me there doesn’t seem to be anything.

  13. It is HOT! Seriously, why is it so hot ALREADY??? Oh to be pregnant in an AL summer… GAH!!!

Ok, I just had to get that out. I LOVE grits but I am the only one in the family who does. Crazy, I know.

  14. I was SO in Home Depot today too! And we were commenting that our flip flops were gonna melt to the asphalt. I cannot imagine how hot August is gonna be. We were swimming yesterday and the water is hot.
    Yay for Birmingham.
See ya at BlawgHer. It’ll be nice to meet you even though I swear we’ve already met.
    :)

  15. HOW FUNNY, We had breakfast for supper too!

Howard is just getting more and more handsome by the day I tell ya.

Yes, it was HAWT here today. Hubby and I were just miserable at the idea that it was 101 here today and the hottest month is 2 months away.

  16. Dare I tell you this??

We awoke to a half-inch of snow this morning.

And two mornings ago, the same thing.

    I’m sorry. Truly I am.

  17. Sophie, it’s just too hot. End of story. Atlanta is sweltering. Did someone get the months out of order and give us August in June? Gracious.

  18. It’s unbearably hot here, too. We got in the pool today for some refreshment, but the pool water was the same temp as the air. The only difference was that the pool was wet. At least it tired the cherubs out.

  19. Boo Mama~Where exactly do you live (I don’t mean exactly–like I’m gonna stalk you, just in general!) Just wondering b/c Dallas, Texas is pretty darn hot and HUMID!!! I could hardly stand to read my book and watch the girls play at the pool today–I had to break down and get in myself.

Breakfast for dinner is near the best. My Meemaw made the best grits! Yummy! I miss her sweet face everyday of my life since she went Home to be with Jesus!

Thanks for the lol funny picture of that squirrel (and I don’t mean your baby boy :o) )

    Blessings,
    Jane

  20. It was 97ยบ real temp here today, 112 heat index. That’s 135 in Diane degrees.

He’s not a baby or even a toddler anymore, Sophie. He’s a handsome young man.

    xoxoxo

    Diane

  21. Yes, gaggy, gaggy hot here in Houston too. And that CANNOT be the itty, bitty baby that Howard was loving on not so long ago. Oh. My. Goodness.

AND there is nothing more refreshing to a tired, hot, mother than a well-placed breakfast dinnner. In and out of that kitchen in a flash!

  22. What about Pet Star? Have you ever succombed to that? I have, but only because my daughter wants to watch, not because of Mario Lopez’s dimples or because I need to be on the cutting edge of pet stardom.

  23. I too try not to be one of those people who talks incessantly about the heat. I always fail.

My summer routine is to grab the person nearest to me and say urgently, “IT WAS NOT THIS HOT LAST SUMMER, was it? No, it couldn’t have been. I would have remembered that. I don’t think I’ve ever felt heat like this before in my life. Surely I would remember that, seeing as how it has me ON THE BRINK OF DEATH and all.”

…At which point the person to whom I am speaking reminds me that we have been having this same one-sided conversation throughout every single summer they have known me.

    Great post. :)

  24. My Grandaddy just passed away (well, it was December, but it seems alot sooner) and I always get all teary eyed thinking about him. I don’t guess that ever changes, though.

Anyways, looks like y’all are having a great start to the week!

  25. If the mercury tops 200 today, you might want to come north to Minnesota. We have only managed to go above 80 three times so far this spring.

I’d even make some grits and biscuits, so you’d feel at home.

  26. Oh my, your little mister has the most beautiful eyes! What sweethearts!

I love all shows that end in “Star” too. Last night the hubs and I sat down for the two hour marathon of Design and Food Network Star. Good times!

  27. Sophie~ You’ve got to watch Nashville Star tonight!! One of the contestants is a girl from our worship team at my church (Pantego Bible in Ft Worth, Tx) – Melissa Lawson. She is a mommy of four little boys and soooo talented.

So…you know how it is more fun to watch a show when you “know” someone who “knows” someone… Well there you have it!!

And your little boys is the cutest thing. If I had had a boy, I would have wanted him to look just like that. But, that would be impossible because, you know, he looks like YOU. :-)

    Blessings to you today!

  28. Oh. My. Word. your little boy is the cutest cutie pie EVER…He’s looks just like you!

  29. I am feelin’ the heat with you! In Texas it is a cool 380 degrees. My oldest made All-Stars so I will be out in said heat until July. Oh my. I just might have to run and electrical cord 9,000 feet long and have me a fan at the ball park!

  30. How hysterical! I thought I was the only one who saw a squirrel flopping itself down on the deck railing. I even called the kids to come see the critter lolling about like a limp rag. Yep, it was THAT hot here in Atlanta, too. Sheesh.

  31. I say this every time I visit here, you are so funny and I can relate!! 240 degress, I really believe it could be that hot. We moved to Nashville 6 months ago and our new home doesn’t have a pool like the former home. I have threatened to buy a baby pool but call it a splash pool. We are fancy like that. We could hang together, I am a sucker for reality shows. Watched the Next Food Network Star and the under cooked runny eggs made me sick. YUK!! French toast was the order of the day with all of them. Anyway, enjoy your company and reality shows!
    Love,
    Patty

  32. We had an estate sale at my grandparents’ house in Gadsden Saturday, and we had tables of knicknacks out on the driveway. I just wanted to let you know that it got so hot that THE CANDLES MELTED. No wonder the squirrels are taking a break!

  33. I love that picture. They are entirely too adorable for words.

Oh, and I’m officially inviting myself over for your next breakfast night. Grits and Bacon – two of God’s perfect foods.

  34. We had breakfast for supper last night!! We do that a lot!! Great pic!

  35. pregnant. summer. The two do not mix.

breakfast for dinner is ALWAYS a hit at our house.

Our cousins just moved across the country. We miss them.

  36. Don’t you feel like we need to call someone and say, “Hi. There must be a mistake here. It is not AUGUST. It is June. Please turn down the heat. Thank you very much.” Except I have no idea where to direct that call. All I know is that I chose this week to refinish my wrought iron patio furniture and I will NOT be defeated! I just hope the wrought iron doesn’t melt in the meantime.

  37. Oh my stars. That picture…those beautiful children!

Just caught up on your blog. Excited about the All-Access blog!

(And Charlotte…in the movie…loved her too! Hilarious!)

  38. Durn it! Tracy beat me to it!

Wasn’t Melissa the absolute BEST tonight on Nashville Star?! I go to that church, too, and get to enjoy her singing during worship.
