Hymned Again

While I recognize that the title of this post might lead you to believe that the choir pulled some sort of practical joke at church yesterday morning, that is not the case at all, my friends.

Please do allow me to explain, oh thank you.

About three years ago I gave the husband a CD called “Hymned” by Bart Millard, the lead singer of Mercy Me. And we were crazy about the CD the very first time we listened to it. I loved being able to play Bart’s CD-o-hymns in the car with my little fella – who, if memory serves, was around two years old at the time. And even though the words to “Pass Me Not, O Gentle Savior” were a little complex for his two year-old vocabulary, Alex did some mean bouncing in his car seat every time he’d hear that melody.

Anyhoo.

When I found out a few months ago that there was going to be a follow-up CD called “Hymned Again,” I was tickled to death. If you’ve read here for any length of time you know that THE MUSIC, I ADORE IT, and the old hymns are especially dear to my heart. Maybe it’s because I learned them when I was a child and the lyrics just get richer with time, or maybe it’s because I love singing the words that believers have been singing for generations, or maybe it’s because there’s so much rock-solid doctrine contained within four verses and a chorus. Regardless, I firmly believe that the old hymns are a treasure we need to intentionally share with our families.

So. If you’d like to win one of ten autographed (FANCY!) copies of “Hymned Again,” leave me a comment and tell me your favorite hymn. If you’re not so familiar with hymns, then just tell me your favorite song (in other words: no church-y background required to win).

And if you’d like a little hint of the musical goodness on this CD, you can watch the clip below.

This giveaway will be open until tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 central time, at which point I’ll close the comments and Mr. Random Integer Generator will select our ten winners.

Have fun, y’all!

  1. Oh, that is hard. I think it would be a tie between It is Well With My Soul and How Great Thou Art~ Amy

  2. I love hymns. You are so right about the doctrine in them. I love Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing, When I Survey the Wondrous Cross, Victory in Jesus, and I’ll Fly Away, because it reminds me of my grandmother.

  3. Praise to the Lord, The Almighty

  4. Thanks for the video clip. Just had me some church in my computer chair.

    Fix Your Eyes Upon Jesus

    Be Thou My Vision
    and

I love Be thou my vision

  6. “Jesus Is All the World To Me.” Without a doubt.

  7. Well I have three favorites. And they’re my favorites HANDS DOWN, but they are neck and neck my faves…

    -My Jesus I Love Thee
    -How Great Thou Art
    -Be Thou My Vision

And I’ll throw a HEFTY honorable mention to Come Thou Fount (I mean, really, who can’t sing about an “ebenezer” and not mean it??)

Thank a ton for the opportunity!

  8. I love the Hymned No. 1!! I keep it in my car and house rotation. My mom is a huge fan as well. We visit a little shop in a neighboring town, and the people who own it were playing it a couple of years ago, and we just had to have it! I LOVE his version of ‘Have a Little Talk with Jesus’, ooooh just makes you wanna groove!

I couldn’t possibly pick one favorite hymn, being raised Baptist, it just isn’t possible!

Some of my top ones are
    Blessed Assurance
It is Well with My Soul
    Victory in Jesus
    & The Unclouded Day

I soooo want to win this give away, Mom would be happy too!

  9. I love Great Is Thy Faithfulness!

  10. Stephanie says:

It’s so hard to choose just one; How Great Thou Art, Amazing Grace, and The Old Rugged Cross just to name a few. I love the praise music we sing in church now days but a big part of me misses the hymns.

  11. Onward Christian Soldiers is the one I remember most vividly from childhood, although I agree with many other posters about Amazing Grace.

  12. Blessed be the Name

  13. day by day. page 145 in our hymnal. love it.

  14. Leanne from Canada says:

mmmmm…too many to choose from!! How about How Great Thou Art!!

  15. Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing

  16. Oh I love them all: Praise to the Lord and Savior, Like a Shepherd Lead Us are my favorites; we had them sung at our wedding.

  17. Southern Gal says:

    I can’t pick just one!

“Be Thou My Vision” and “The Old Rugged Cross”…

But my babies loved to have “He Keeps Me Singing” sung to them while being rocked to sleep.

  18. kimberly says:

What a friend we have in Jesus……because hey, it’s the truth. And it has been wonderful to hear my young son learn to play it and other beautiful hymns on the piano at home.

  19. My favorite hymn by far is “Sweetest Name I Know.”… Its not only a great song but I can’t hear it without picturing my grandpa. Growing up we went to this little country church and He was the song leader. He would sing this song alot and everytime he would he had the most amazing look on his face…even as a child I knew that the name of Jesus was something special.

  20. Donna Wright says:

Blessed Assurance….too many to get started on a list!

    Donna

  21. “Praise To The Lord, The Almighty”- I have always loved this hymn and my husband and I had it sung as a congregational song at our wedding 30 years ago.

  22. We just sang this at my Grandpa’s funeral… When the Roll is called up Yonder

  23. All of the above! Seriously! But I also love “How Deep the Father’s Love for Us.” Beautiful.

How deep the Father’s love for us
    How vast beyond all measure
That He would send His only Son
To make a wretch His treasure.

    Wow.

  24. I’ve always loved “The Old Rugged Cross” even though I didn’t really grow up in a hymn singing kind of church. Our worship leader was a Messianic jew- so most of our songs were choruses in the key of E minor!

  25. Marie Wettlaufer says:

How Great Thou Art has always been a favourite in our family for generations!

  26. It is so tough to pick a favorite… I’ve had most all of them memorized since I was 10 or so years old and scoured the old hymn book from our church’s Campmeeting with the intent of never learning another song until I knew all of those first. I guess my current favorite is “Jesus Loves Me” because it blesses my heart to hear my four little gals singing it to themselves as they go about their days.

  27. I love so many hymns but near the top of my list is “Because He Lives.” We sang it at my mom’s funeral so it’s hard to sing sometimes these days but “I can face tomorrow!”

  28. When I was a little girl, oh so long ago, I used to sit with Grandma on the piano bench singing “Bringing in the Sheaves”. Didn’t know what a “Sheave” was, but I sure brung ’em in : )

  29. Blessed Assurance
    Amazing Grace
Power in the Blood (God spoke to me MIGHTILY through that one just the other night when I was having a tough struggle!)

  30. I remember “Come Thou Fount” being the first hymn after the many pages of recitations in one version of the Methodist hymnal when I was growing up, & it always thrilled me when we sang it in a service. It’s still one of my favorites.

  31. I love the hymns! I have two favorites and they are Amazing Grace and Just As I Am.

    Thanks

    Lesa

  32. Be Thou My Vision is my absoulte favorite!

High King of Heaven, my victory won,
    May I reach Heaven’s joys, O bright Heaven’s Sun!
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,
Still be my Vision, O Ruler of all.

    Amen!

  33. Wow. that CD sounds great..im totally going to have to get it! My favorite hymn would definitely have to be “how great thou art”…and i love when they do “how great is our God” and then go into “how great thow art” …ahhh goose-bumples!! :)

  34. Hymns are my FAVorite. :) Thanks for the giveway. My absolute favorite would have to be “It is Well.”

  35. Sarah J. says:

Holy, Holy, Holy is my favorite, especially with a church full of people singing along with me!

  36. I like “Nothing But the Blood” and “The Old Rugged Cross”

  37. So many incredible hymns, but my all time favorite is definitely “In the Garden”. “And He walks with me and He talks with me and He tells me I am His own…” I can’t even begin to fathom how amazing it’s going to be to walk side by side with my Savior.

  38. “Great Is Thy Faithfulness”

  39. My favorite is Joyful, Joyful we adore thee since it reminds me of my grandfather (I picked it for his funeral when I was a little girl). Just glancing through the comments, I see ones with so many memories/important lessons attached. Can a pick a top 10? Yeah, I love hymns.

  40. “How Marvelous”

  41. I have to say, I thought I was the only one who loved Amazing Grace & It is Well with my soul – but I see lots of friends who like them too. Amazing Grace was the go-to song for singing my babies to sleep. I can cry every time.
I love me some Boo Mama and I love me some Jesus music too! Pick me o random integer baby.

  42. It is well with my soul – the song AND it IS well with my soul (in case you were wondering regarding my soul situation). My blog is named partly for one of my Dad’s faves – Beulahland – just cannot go wrong with hymns.

  43. Victory In Jesus.

    Hands down.

cry every time I hear it or sing it or even think about it.

    tearing up now…

  44. Pick me! Pick me!

“It Is Well With My Soul”–makes me cry every time we get to the part that says, “And my sin, O the bliss of this glo-o-orious thought, my sin–not in part–but the whole, has been nailed to the cross and I bear it no more, Praise the LORD, Praise the LORD, O my soul.”

  45. I had to stop reading the comments, they were reminding me of more that I loved. My two most favorite are Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee and Be Thou My Vision. With Imortial, Invisiable close behind.

  46. One of my favorites is “Search Me, O God”!

I’d really like to win this CD! :)

  47. SO hard to say…
    Shine Jesus Shine.

  48. I love reading your blog :-)

my favorite hymn is definitely the Love of God. :-) we used to sing it when I was little growing up in church with the old piano and it was perfect, although the newer versions are fantastic too ;-)

  49. Bailey's Leaf says:

Okay, I can’t remember the name of it — ugh! — but it is the song that they sang in the movie “Little Women” (with Winona Ryder) when their sister is getting married. They are dancing around in a circle. Yup– that one.

I work at an art gallery and we are having our annual sale. I’m suffering from sale brain! Forgive me!

Although, I do agree with #2 with the Amazing Grace (My Chains are Gone) suggestion, too.

  50. My favs are In the Garden, & I’ll fly Away. Thanks for the giveaway.

  51. Favorite hymn: It Is Well with My Soul

  52. I love hymns. My daddy sang them to me when he rocked me as a baby.

The congregation stood and sang Worthy of Worship in my wedding right after I walked down the aisle. i adore that song. So, my fave is “Worthy of Worship”.

  53. I love “Enough” because my daughter can sing it. She calls it “The Grace Song,” and she just sounds so sweet singing, with head bobbing, “Remember…Remember…Remember…” She’s only almost-going-to-be-but-not-quite-yet 3.

  54. I’m going with For the Beauty of the Earth.

    Good memories.

  55. I grew up in a little, white country church in the country. My Mama (great grandmother) and Granny sat on the pew behind me and my family. My Granny is now 92 and kickin’. MaMa’s favorite song was “Little Brown church in the Wildwood” the men sing the low part “oh, come, come, come..” and the women sing the higher part. I am tearing up just thinking about that little church, filled with the voices of people who loved me.

  56. My favorite hymn is “It Is Well”.

  57. Hmmmm…I’d have to say Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee. And I loved it when they did it in Sister Act too. :)

  58. Come Thou Font… so beautiful. Thanks for the music!

  59. Where do I even begin?!!! Rock of Ages, Power in the Blood, Blessed Assurance… I could go on and on forever. Have you seen the books by Joni Eraeckson Tada? For KIDS about hymns with a cd of the hymns. Fanstastic!

  60. My favorite hymn is definatly “And Can It Be” – the words are amazing! I’d love to win a CD! Laurie

A couple of my favorites are “What a Friend We Have in Jesus” and “Great is Thy Faithfulness”.

  62. CMartin21 says:

My all-time favorite is ‘O, Love That Wilt Not Let Me Go’….it has an amazing story behind its creation. I also have a great fondness for ‘It Is Well With My Soul’…again another wonderful story of faith behind it.

  63. Oh, Be Thou My Vision. Thanks!

  64. Too hard to pick just one – but my all-time favorites are “It Is Well With My Soul”, “Amazing Grace” or “Great is Thy Faithfulness”…

  65. It Is Well With My Soul :)

  66. “Come Thou Fount” is my favorite hymn.

“Oh to grace how great a debtor daily I’m constrained to be. Let Thy goodness, like a fetter, bind my wandering heart to thee. Prone to wander, Lord I feel it! Prone to leave the God I love. Here’s my heart, Lord. Take and seal it. Seal it for Thy courts above.”

    Amazing.

  67. Oh my, that’s a tough one — which makes me really think. I’ll go with “Great is Thy Faithfulness.” God bless you, Boo mama! Hugs from Wichita, KS

  68. Julie Curtis says:

When We All Get to Heaven

  69. I love “Hymned” and am excited to hear that a follow-up is being released! My fave hymn (right now, it’s changed a few times throughout my life) is It is Well (with My Soul); I sing it to my fussy babies and to my fussy self. :-)

I love hymns so much that it’s hard to pick a favorite…the one that comes first to mind, though, is “Because He Lives.”

  72. pick me pick me

  73. Pick me, pleeeeeeeeeeeease, oh random number generator!

    Mary, mom to many

  74. My favorites are Oh, the Deep, Deep Love of Jesus and Be Thou My Vision.

Wait! And It Is Well With My Soul. Love, love, love that one. When I was suffering from depression, I would sing that over and over, figuring if it worked for Horatio Spafford, it could work for me, too. :)

I’m Eastern Orthodox now so I don’t sing these hymns in church, but I spent a lot of time with Baptists growing up. In fact, I was just talking to someone about how I feel it’s important for my kids to learn the hymns as part of their American Christian heritage. I’d love to win this CD! :)

  75. Although I am not exactly religious, I claim to be spiritual. My family always relies on The Old Rugged Cross, Amazing Grace, How Great Thou Art and His Eye is on the Sparrow for funerals. But my all time old time favorie is In the Garden.

  76. Precious Lord, Take my Hand
Words and music by Thomas Dorsey
    1932

    Precious Lord, take my hand,
Lead me on, let me stand,
    I am tired, I am weak, I am worn;
Through the storm, through the night,
Lead me on to the light:
Take my hand, precious Lord, lead me home.
    When my way grows drear,
    Precious Lord, linger near,
When my life is almost gone,
Hear my cry, hear my call,
Hold my hand lest I fall:
Take my hand, precious Lord, lead me home.

    When the darkness appears
    And the night draws near,
And the day is past and gone,
    At the river I stand,
Guide my feet, hold my hand:
Take my hand, precious Lord, lead me home.

  77. Samantha says:

The first Sunday my Husband and I ventured back to church following the stillbirth of our first child (36 weeks) the preacher was starting an eight week study on death (I kid you not.) We held onto one another for dear life just to keep ourselves from racing for the door. Of course, as all good Southern Baptist churches do, the hymns matched the message and were all about Heaven. Eleven years later I cannot sing “On Jordan’s Stormy Banks I Stand” without tears streaming down my face. All of a sudden I had a “possesion” in Heaven to look forward to. It truly became a real place to me that day in church.

  78. I don’t know that it’s my favorite, but nothing conjurs up memories of my Baptist upbring and our Sunday evening songleader, Clayton Fackler (how’s that for a down-home name?) directing “When the Roll Is Called Up Yonder”!!! =)

  79. It Is Well With My Soul. We Gather Together and IHeard the Bells on Christmas Day (because I am an ALTO). I can’t sing the words “God is not dead nor does he sleep” without tearing up.

  80. It Is Well With My Soul – makes me cry every time at the line “when sorrow like sea bellows roll” – when you think about where he was when he wrote this beautiful song – oh my goodness, where are my tissues?

  81. Lately, I’ve been in love with It Is Well (particularly the version on Selah’s Greatest Hymns cd)!

  82. Great is Thy Faithfulness
“Morning by Morning new mercies I see…”

  83. I absolutely agree with all your comments on hymnody. Such a treasure to pass on to future generations! Some of my favorites are Wake, Awake for Night is Flying, How Sweet and Awesome is the Place, and All Praise to Thee, My God, This Night.

  84. I go through cycles with hymns – first I have one favorite and then another. It depends on which one speaks to me “right where I’m at” in the season of my life at that moment.

Right now, it is “And Can It Be” also called “Amazing Love.”

    Thanks for the contest!
    Alesha

  85. “Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing” is my favorite. I love the thought of the Lord sealing my heart for Him alone.

Love your blog. I laugh almost every time I read it!

  86. “Years I spent in vanity and pride, caring not my Lord was crucified… knowing not it was for me he died on Calvary….”

Is that close enough to a name?

I have a Baptist Hymnal on the book shelf.

I also love the whole “Away in a Manger” sang it to my babies as a lullaby.

    Bless You.

  87. Amazing Grace

  88. I love How Great is Our God by Chris Tomlin. Gives me chills each time I hear it – and especially when I get to sign (language) it at church.

  89. My #1 favorite hymn :
    *great is Thy faithfulness*

because… Oh my. He is faithful.
    Even when I am not.

  90. I like “I come to the garden alone”.

  91. My favs are “Great Is Thy Faithfulness” and “It Is Well With My Soul.” Absolutely profound after all these years!!

  92. I love What Wondrous Love Is This. The words and the melody reach my soul.

  93. Blessed Assurance is by far my favorite hymn.

Thanks for hosting this giveaway Sophie.

  94. Oh my goodness, this is a hard one, as I love so many old hymns. I would have to say that my favorites are “How great thou art”, “Amazing Grace”, “To God Be the Glory”.
All of these remind me just how good my God is! And He is beyond my imagination!!

  95. “Amazing Grace”, “Power In The Blood”, too many to list. “Something Beautiful” by the Gaithers is wonderful. I also imagine walking down the aisle to “Great Is Thy Faithfulness”.

  96. One of my favorites is Brooke Fraser’s ‘Hymn’. (The last song on her Albertine cd) =)
    Sarah in New Zealand

  97. If I could give this to my dearest friend, she would just love me forever. Well, she already does, but you know what I mean! :)

  98. How can I pick just one? OK, I will set them up by categories: a capella – Amazing Grace, Worship – How Great Thou Art, Praise – Great Is Thy Faithfulness. These are a few of my favorite things!

    Tammy

  99. All-time favorite hymn is “Holy, Holy, Holy.” We even had the congregation sing it at our wedding.

  100. Well, I love SO many hymns, but I’d have to go with Amazing Grace as my all-time favorite.
