Hymned Again

While I recognize that the title of this post might lead you to believe that the choir pulled some sort of practical joke at church yesterday morning, that is not the case at all, my friends.

Please do allow me to explain, oh thank you.

About three years ago I gave the husband a CD called “Hymned” by Bart Millard, the lead singer of Mercy Me. And we were crazy about the CD the very first time we listened to it. I loved being able to play Bart’s CD-o-hymns in the car with my little fella – who, if memory serves, was around two years old at the time. And even though the words to “Pass Me Not, O Gentle Savior” were a little complex for his two year-old vocabulary, Alex did some mean bouncing in his car seat every time he’d hear that melody.

When I found out a few months ago that there was going to be a follow-up CD called “Hymned Again,” I was tickled to death. If you’ve read here for any length of time you know that THE MUSIC, I ADORE IT, and the old hymns are especially dear to my heart. Maybe it’s because I learned them when I was a child and the lyrics just get richer with time, or maybe it’s because I love singing the words that believers have been singing for generations, or maybe it’s because there’s so much rock-solid doctrine contained within four verses and a chorus. Regardless, I firmly believe that the old hymns are a treasure we need to intentionally share with our families.

So. If you’d like to win one of ten autographed (FANCY!) copies of “Hymned Again,” leave me a comment and tell me your favorite hymn. If you’re not so familiar with hymns, then just tell me your favorite song (in other words: no church-y background required to win).

And if you’d like a little hint of the musical goodness on this CD, you can watch the clip below.

This giveaway will be open until tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 central time, at which point I’ll close the comments and Mr. Random Integer Generator will select our ten winners.

Have fun, y’all!

  1. Seriously? I’m first? Oh yeah, I don’t have a job.

I love the hymn “Before the Throne”. A lot.

  2. Random integer, pick me pick me!

Favorite hymn…that’s a hard one because I love me some music. Maybe one of my favorites is Amazing Grace with the updated My Chains are Gone!!!

  3. How Great Thou Art – always reminds me of my dad. Thanks.

  4. Well, I love Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee it was sung at our wedding. I also have a great fondness for Be Thou My Vision and It is Well with my Soul.

  5. My favorite hymn is Great is Thy Faithfulness. I also love the song by Sara Groves that refers to that hymn; I think it’s He’s always been faithful to me, or something like that. I adore updated hymns.

  6. I like Holy Ground, Blessed Assurance, What a Friend we have in Jesus, It is Well with my Soul, I better stop…thank you for the giveaway!!

  7. Come Thou Fount is my favorite, especially the updated version that Sandra McCracken recorded a couple of years ago. But, the Robbie Seay version of Come Ye Sinners is a close second. I love hymns too!

  8. My favorite right now is actually the one on the video–“My Savior’s Love”…I heard it on KLove radio one day about 3 weeks ago, on my way to the hospital where I was taking care of my dying Grandma. The song reminded me that Jesus does care about our griefs and sorrows–that is what he was thinking about as he died on the cross!

My grandma passed away last week so now this hymn is so near and dear to my heart.

I also love the Old Rugged Cross, In the Garden, and Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing (although I giggle everytime we sing about “Mine Ebenezer”. What is that anyway????)

  9. Holy Ground is one of my favs!

  10. I’m an Amazing Grace girl. Although running a very close second is How Great Thou Art since it reminds me of my Nanny (along with her fingernails clicking on the piano keys!)

  11. I really like Be Thou My Vision, and All Creatures of Our God and King. My husband and I love the praise music of ‘today’, but we’re worried our daughter will miss out on the great hymns of ‘yesterday’. This CD would be a step in the right direction!

  12. My favorite hymns are “At Calvary” and “Old Rugged Cross.”

  13. I LOVE these. Because as I read the comments I say, “LOVE that one. That one too. And that one.” Amazing Grace, Great is Thy Faithfulness, Blessed Assurance, Come Thou Fount, It is Well with My Soul, and even — I know — I Come to the Garden Alone. Can’t help but love these. I’ll probably think of 10 more during the day now.

  14. Oooh, that’s a hard one! Great is the Faithfulness and How Great Thou Art if I have to choose!

  15. Mercy Me + Hymns = Perfection.

My favorite Hymn is Rejoice the LORD is King. (And Holy Holy Holy)

    Kelly S. Michigan

  16. I love so many hymns…My favorite Christmas one, by far, is O Holy Night. other than that Amazing Grace is so profound, yet so simple. I love hearing my 4 yr old sing it…Chills…

  17. I love Oh God our help in ages past and What a friend we have in Jesus and Abide with me. I love a lot of hymns. It was so hard to choose.

  18. How Firm a Foundation

That hymn has gone with me through some hard times.

  19. “Because He Lives,” although I almost never get to actually sing it because I’m sobbing my heart out.

  20. I would love to win this to share with my family. My favorite hymn is Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee.

  21. “Man of Sorrows”. Love that one!!

  22. “Guide me oh thou great Redeemer” and “Immortal, invisible” are my favourite hymns!

  23. “Amazing Grace” is still my fav!!
How true it is…nothing but grace that is so undeserved, yet given…AMAZING!

  24. I have many favorite hymns, but one that sticks out right now is “Trust and Obey.”

  25. It is well with my soul!

  26. In The Garden. Hands down that is my favorite hymn ever. I love the visual of walking through a garden early in the morning with my Lord. Another fave is We Shall See the King thanks to many a Sunday night camp meeting service. That one got the place a rockin’!

  27. Oh I know it’s old school, but I love me some “Victory in Jesus.”

  28. I love “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross.” The music is a little monotone, but the lyrics are amazing.

  29. Ivy Barnes says:

Come Thou Fount (if I had to choose just one:)

  30. Be Thou My Vision
It is Well With my Soul
    Come Thou Long Expected Jesus

But that’s just a sampling of the ones I sing to my boys on a daily basis. (They would thank-you from the bottom of their hearts to listen to someone else’s singing.)

  31. Great is Thy Faithfulness…”There is no shadow of turning with thee, Thou changest not, Thy compassions they fail not, As Though has been, Thou forever wilt be.”

  32. I love Great is Thy Faithfulness and Softly & Tenderly.

  33. Oh my goodness, I have so many favorites. I guess I’d have to say “Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus”.

  34. Too many to mention, so I guess I’ll have to pick the first one that comes to mind:

    Leaning on the Everlasting Arms

  35. Favorite hymns…
    ~A Mighty Fortress
    ~Praise to the Lord
    ~Beautiful Savior
    ~Be Thou My Vision

  36. How Great Thou Art, but it’s hard to pick. Wish we sang more hymns these days…

  37. I was raised in a small country church and only sang hymns until the last few years! I love “Dwelling in Beulah Land” for my grandmother (Beulah) who took me to church every Sunday (thank you!). I also love Amazing Grace with the adaptation of My Chains are Gone. My daughter signed this at my father’s funeral in March. His chains are gone and he’s been set free!

  38. In Christ Alone and Joyful, Joyful I Adore Thee. I couldn’t choose just one!

  39. Wow – the old hymns… one of my favorite is “He Leadeth Me” (oh blessed thought!). When I was 10 yrs old, our children’s choir had a contest to see who could learn the most hymns right out of the hymnal…gave me a love for the hymns that I still have today.

  40. Um – there are two things I LOVE – Bart Millard and HYMNS!!!! I am a HUGE fan of hymns. I love current worship songs but a good hymn just rocks me! Why have I never heard of this CD – I am on my way to buy the first one this week!
Probably two of my very favorite are ” Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus” (can’t sing without crying) and “Come thou fount of every blessing”.

  41. Amazing Grace will always and forever be my favorite, every time I sing it or hear it I get weepy…I just love it.

  42. Amanda D. says:

It Is Well and Holy Holy Holy… they get me every time!

  43. I realized at a recent funeral (of all places…) that I love the hymn “Bourning Cry” and my new fav on the radio is “Mighty to Save”.

  44. I’m not sure it’s my favorite, but the first one that popped into my head is Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing – and now I’ll be singing it all afternoon!

  45. If forced to choose only one hymn, it would be “Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing.” I would beg for two more though – “A Mighty Fortress” and “Be Thou My Vision.”

  46. Melody Peacock says:

I adore the first one. I didn’t know there was a 2nd one coming out. I will cross my fingers on this one. :)

  47. Hymns…good for your bones. Well, I’m actually not sure of that, but I know that I probably consumed more hymns as a young girl than milk. My father was the minister of music, and hymns were a family staple. :)

My favorite? How Great Thou Art

Hands Down. Those words and that melody have been the background to so many key points in my life that it will forever speak to me in new and changing ways.

“And when I think that God, his Son not sparing, sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in. That on the cross, my burden gladly bearing, He bled and died to take away my sin.

Then sings my soul, my Savior, God to Thee: How great Thou art! How great Thou art! Then sings my soul, my Savior, God to Thee: How great Thou art! How. Great. Thou. Art!!” Amen.

  48. Hello there,
My fav hymn would have to be Be Thou My Vision and perhaps Heavenly Sunshine.
Thanks for letting me play along! :)

  49. I can’t really pick a favorite, but some of the first that come to mind are “It is Well,” “In Christ Alone,” “Amazing Grace,” and “Power in the Blood.” I have a hard time finding hymn recordings that I like, but the video sounded great!

  50. Like many here, I couldn’t POSSIBLY choose just one! I absolutely ADORE the old hymns. 4Him put out a hymn CD a few years ago called “Hymns: A Place of Worship” that rocks my world E.V.E.R.Y. time I hear it. Whole album on my iPod for sure!

I love: A Mighty Fortress is Our God; It Is Well With My Soul; Holy, Holy, Holy; Solid Rock; Be Thou My Vision; All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name; Leaning On the Everlasting Arms; Crown Him With Many Crowns; and Fairest Lord Jesus.

Oh, wait… did you say ONE favorite? ;)

  51. I love “Come thou fount”. We had it in our wedding and I love all the contemporary versions as well!

  52. I am a hymn fanatic….love the history behind them, love to learn the bible verses they are based on, etc. When I lost my daughter three years ago, the words to “Blessed Assurance” crept into my ears when I would least expect it: “this is my story, this is my song, praising my Saviour all the day long!”

  53. kelli in the mirror says:

I love Amazing Grace and Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing. And inexplicably, I also love Once To Every Man And Nation, which is weird and in a minor key.

  54. I’ll Fly Away

(Which has also been sung by Jars of Clay, Andy Griffith, Johnny Cash,Kanye West,Crystal Gayle, Avalon, Randy Travis, and Alan Jackson)

  55. Cabana Ma'am says:

I’m all about “How Great Thou Art”–I get chills singing that to our God! :)

  56. I also can’t pick just one:

Old Hymns – “Come Thou Fount” and “Oh for a Thousand Tongues to Sing”

New hymns – “Jesus, Draw Me ever Nearer” or “In Christ Alone”

  57. My favorite hymn is the oh-so-well-loved “It is well with my soul”. When you combine those powerful words with the background behind the song, and then add in any less-than-perfect life circumstance, it’s just a Holy Moment.

  58. I was raised in a Southern Baptist church from about the age of five. I am now 39 (how did that happen) and although our church doesn’t do many hymns anymore, when I do hear them I still know almost every word. I would probably have to say my favorite is “Redeemed (how I love to proclaim it)”.

  59. Caroline says:

“It is Well” is my FAVORITE!

  60. I love hymns!! My favorite is On Eagles Wings; my husbands favorite is How Great thou Art.

  61. It is well with my soul….and of course Amazing Grace.

  62. Hands down, “Great is Thy Faithfulness”. This was the hymn that I walked down the aisle to at my wedding.

A close second (3rd & 4th)…”O, Sacred Head”, “Like a River Glorious”, and “When Peace Like a River”.

  63. LOVE THIS!!!

We sing hymns at our church, at home, in the car…

I love teaching our kids hymns as well. We’ve read two volumes of “Hymns for a Kids’ Heart” numerous times. They are fabulous!

My favorite hymn: Immanuel’s Land (or The Sands of Time are Sinking)

  64. Sooo Many, blest be the tie that bind, blessed assurance, amazing grace. Hope I win…thanks for the opportunity.

  65. I love the old hymns, so much so that I actually struggle with our music director’s choice to hardly ever include them in worship. But . . . that doesn’t mean that we can’t enjoy them at home, right?

My all time favorite hymn(s)(You can’t expect a good Conservative Baptist girl to choose only one, can you?) are: Amazing Grace, Great is Thy Faithfulness, The Old Rugged Cross and How Great Thou Art.

Well, there are at least five others that I love equally as well, but you did ask for only one.

  66. I love Take My Life and Let it Be, especially because it talks about singing (since I”m an aspiring opera singer!) and It Is Well With My Soul because its so awesome and has great meaning about resting in the love and trust of God.

  67. Blessed Assurance

One of my favorites hands down. It might have to do with a good memory of my son and this song from when he was little.

    Thanks for the giveaway!

  68. pick my favorite hymn…now that’s just about impossible! While we don’t sing hymns very often on Sun am, I love going to the granparents church and singing them. They remind me so much of great memories in my childhood.

So, narrowing it down, I’d have to say, “Be Thou My Vision”. GLAD did a great rendition of it too. Now I’m starting to sound old…hehe

  69. My absolute favorite would have to be
‘beautiful Savior” aka “Fairest Lord Jesus.” I also thank you for the opportunity and the info. I have never heard of these CDs.

  70. What a great giveaway! My favorite hymn is definitely “Come Thou Fount.”

  71. Amy Martin says:

  72. Holy, Holy, Holy is my fav. Also love Fairest Lord Jesus, A MIghty Fortress, and Great is Thy Faithfulness.

  73. I love “Be Thou My Vision”, especially the old Ginny Owens version – Beautiful!

  74. Hey Boomama! ;) My favorite is Come Thou Fount, quickly followed by Be Thou My Vision, and Haven of Rest, and many others!

  75. Only one? Oh, boy.

The Old Rugged Cross? LOVE IT.

Be Thou My Vision is a close second.

  76. I love Great is Thy Faithfulness! It was sung at my wedding and will probably be at my funeral one day too! :)

  77. I Stand Amazed (How Marvelous)

  78. It’s a toss up between “How Great Thou Art” and “It Is Well With My Soul”. Although, “I Stand Amazed” is quickly becoming one of my favorites too. Aggghh. Too many good ones to choose just one!

  79. “More Love to Thee, O Christ” written by Elizabeth Prentiss

She is also the author of Stepping Heavenward – one of my favorite challenging/encouraging books that I re-read every couple of years.

  80. On Christ the Solid Rock I Stand
    How Great Thou Art
    Be Thou My Vision

Oops…you only asked for one! Impossible!

  81. For The Beauty Of The Earth is the first that comes to mind, probably because I worked so hard to learn to play it!

  82. I LOVE hymn CDs! I think my favorite hymn is “Be Thou My Vision.”

  83. I love “Come Thou Fount!” And would love that cd!

  84. one of my favorites is “He Giveth More Grace” Got me through the delivery of baby #2!! very fun!

  85. I love hymns….but I guess my favorite is It is well with my soul.

  86. Ummm…I’m not sure. Maybe “The Old Rugged Cross”..?

  87. Grace Greater than all Our Sins is a huge favorite … as is My Jesus I Love Thee. :)

  88. I sang Great Is Thy Faithfulness and How Great Thou Art to all my babies in place of traditional lullabies. Not as a statement or anything, those are just the songs that welled up when I was rockin’ and nursin’ in the middle of the long nights of babies. That and Power in the Blood.

Fellow Hymns Junkie here – love, love, love! Even had my son make me a special play list on my iPod for my collection of hymns cd’s.

  89. I’m gonna go with “How Deep the Father’s Love For Us”

  90. It Is Well With My Soul, hands down. A cappella, with 4-pt harmony.

  91. Sooo hard to pick just one. . . Be Thou My Vision and Untitled Hymn (Come to Jesus) are definitely at the top of the list.

  92. Blessed Assurance, I Surrender All, Be Thou My Vision, It is Well With My Soul, How Great Thou Art, I Know That My Redeemer Lives…stop me now!!

  93. One? My Jesus, I Love Thee. It’s so great we sang it at our wedding – or at least listened to the congregation sing it behind us while we soaked up the moment.

  94. I love “Amazing Grace” :)

  95. Hymn favorites…. thats hard for a church musician…

    – How Great Thou Art
    – Be Thou My Vision
    – My Jesus, I love Thee

Those would be the top three for me… at least today:)

  96. Just As I Am and Amazing Grace!

  97. Where to start???

The Old Rugged Cross immediately comes to mind, and Victory in Jesus, I Love to Tell the Story, Blessed Assurance, and so many others. Oh, I need me an old fashioned hymn sing now…

  98. Hmmm…just one favorite? Be Thou My Vision….Amazing Grace…How Great Thou Art….Joyful Joyful We Adore Thee…. There’s too many to list.

I listened to the clip too…love him!!!

  99. I know I would love this. My favorites change all the time, but I love I’ll Fly away and Amazing Grace. Then there’s When Peace like a River and To God be the Glory. Thanks for doing this!

  100. Victory In Jesus!

    My Savior, forever.
    He sought me
    And bought me
    With His redeeming blood
He loved me ‘ere I knew Him
    And all my love
    Is due Him
    He plunged me
    To victory
    Beneath the cleansing flood!

Sorry, we tend to get carried away here at the Singer household…
