Hymned Again

While I recognize that the title of this post might lead you to believe that the choir pulled some sort of practical joke at church yesterday morning, that is not the case at all, my friends.

Please do allow me to explain, oh thank you.

About three years ago I gave the husband a CD called “Hymned” by Bart Millard, the lead singer of Mercy Me. And we were crazy about the CD the very first time we listened to it. I loved being able to play Bart’s CD-o-hymns in the car with my little fella – who, if memory serves, was around two years old at the time. And even though the words to “Pass Me Not, O Gentle Savior” were a little complex for his two year-old vocabulary, Alex did some mean bouncing in his car seat every time he’d hear that melody.

Anyhoo.

When I found out a few months ago that there was going to be a follow-up CD called “Hymned Again,” I was tickled to death. If you’ve read here for any length of time you know that THE MUSIC, I ADORE IT, and the old hymns are especially dear to my heart. Maybe it’s because I learned them when I was a child and the lyrics just get richer with time, or maybe it’s because I love singing the words that believers have been singing for generations, or maybe it’s because there’s so much rock-solid doctrine contained within four verses and a chorus. Regardless, I firmly believe that the old hymns are a treasure we need to intentionally share with our families.

So. If you’d like to win one of ten autographed (FANCY!) copies of “Hymned Again,” leave me a comment and tell me your favorite hymn. If you’re not so familiar with hymns, then just tell me your favorite song (in other words: no church-y background required to win).

And if you’d like a little hint of the musical goodness on this CD, you can watch the clip below.

This giveaway will be open until tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 central time, at which point I’ll close the comments and Mr. Random Integer Generator will select our ten winners.

Have fun, y’all!

  1. Is It I Lord? or They Will Know We Are Christians by Our Love have got to be my top two… I know you asked for one, but two must be better, right?

  2. kathleen says:

    I’ll pick two favorites:
    Immortal, Invisible
    OR
I Know Whom I Have Believed.

  3. my two most favorite hymns are “How Great Thou Art,” and “Amazing Grace.”

Funny story… my daughter, about a year ago, at a singing, was singing along with all her might to “Bringing in the Sheaves,” and while listening carefully, we all learned that the correct word is not in fact “sheaves,” but “cheese.”

  4. That’s a tough one, I have so many. Be Thou my Vision is probably it, or at least in the top five.

  5. I have a southern baptist background so many, many come to mind. But one that is especially, well, special is “Old Rugged Cross.” It was my grandmother’s favorite song and since recently losing her at 89 years old, I remember the song fondly.

  6. I triple-love “His Eye is on the Sparrow”. Makes me cry every time I hear it, thinking that my Jesus is looking down on me, loving me, in spite of everything else that might be happening.

So, BooMama (and you’ve probably mentioned it before), but what is your favorite hymn?

  7. I don’t think there is any way I can pick just one favorite. Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing, In Christ Alone, Joyful Joyful We Adore Thee (is that a hymn?), How Great Thou Art, Great Is Thy Faithfulness…

But I guess if I absolutely *had* to pick just one, it’d be Amazing Grace.

  8. Be Thou My Vision and Great Is Thy Faithfulness are two of my favorites, but Amazing Grace probably tops them all.

  9. It is Well with My Soul and Blessed Assurance are my two all time favorites.

  10. I Need Thee Every Hour, the Indelible Grace arrangement. Love it!

  11. How Great Thou Art

  12. Stephanie says:

My favorite hymn is Wonderful Grace of Jesus. I have such precious memories of singing this hymn (and many others) standing by my dad. He loved to sing all the extra parts and I still love to sing them now (kind of rebelliously since we have a church that kind of does the “everyone sing unison” thing on hymns) LOL

  13. Oh how I love me some Mercy Me and Bart, solo! Took my then 6 year old son to see Mercy Me. His first concert and he loved it! I was so proud to watch him sing every song. My favorite hymns are….
Amazing Grace, It Is Well With My Soul, Holy, Holy, Holy, and I’ll Fly Away.

  14. Oh, how I love the Hymns….there is nothing better than some good ol’ 4-part harmony. It’s too hard to pick a favorite, but I’m partial to He Leadeth Me, Happy Day, It is Well, Victory in Jesus, Oh How I Love Jesus, When I Survey the Wonderous Cross, and At Calvary. Just to name a few!

  15. The Wonderful Cross …. Amazing Love …. The Happy Song (not sure that is the name .. lol)
    Enjoyed his clip!

  16. My favorite hymn is “Be Thou My Vision!”

  17. Amazing Grace and just about every Christmas hymn there is.

  18. “Great Is Thy Faithfulness”

It was sung at my parents’ wedding and my own. It’s the anthem of our marriage, a good and gentle reminder…

  19. How Great Thou Art – goosebumps every time!!!!!!!!!!!! Powerful stuff man!

*Also a little partial to The Wonderful Cross (Sentimental reasons) and What A Friend We Have In Jesus (the first one I ever knew all of the words to!!!

PS -I LOVE Bart and reeeeeeeeaaaaaaalllllllllllly want this one.

    please

  20. Gotta be “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross.”

  21. My favorite is “I’ll Fly Away.”

  22. love all the hymns…& this cd looks good enough that I might just have to buy it!
    fun giveaway!
if you make me list them, then When I survey & a couple that Sara Groves does that I can’t think of just now…

  23. There are SO MANY that I love. Amazing Grace, It is Well, The Anchor Holds, Great is Thy Faithfulness,…

  24. My fave classic is “It is Well”
Fave “current” hymn is “In Christ Alone”

  25. It is well With My Soul.

My goodness it’s hard to narrow down to just one choice. Thanks for the chance to win!

  26. I totally agree about hymns! They are my absolute favorite kind of music. Like you, I grew up with them… and they do just get richer with time. My favorite is “He Abides”… or “‘Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus”… or “A Charge to Keep”… Oh! You’re not gonna make me choose just one, are you?

I’d love to win this CD! What a great giveaway!

  27. I’d have to say “How Great Thou Art” but there are just so many. I always get excited when my church sings “At the Cross” but that’s mostly because in my family we sang “At the bar, at the bar where I smoked my first cigar…” We were a super holy bunch.

  28. I ADORE (with a big ol’ capitol A), “Borning Cry”. As a Godparent to two of my younger cousins, this song is very special to me.

Come on number generator!! I promise…the offer for monster cookies is still on the table.

  29. I love In The Garden…it was my grandpa’s favorite and when I hear it my heart smiles in memory of him…

to sing I love How Great Thou Art….I love singing that one to our Father :o)

  30. All of the above. But my all time favorite is Be Thou My Vision.

  31. How Great Thou Art and It Is Well With My Soul! Love reading and remembering these old favorites!

  32. My favorite is O Sacred Head. A VERY old hymn!

  33. Man-do I have to pick just one?

Amazing grace -of course the updated probably put its it as all time favorite anything-even better that my 13 yr old super cool dood has it as a ringtone on his phone.

Oh, ok then that will be my all time number one!

  34. I love Blessed Assurance and Come Thy Fount of Every Blessing. There are so many good ones!

  35. Oooh! that’s a tough question since I am a fellow lover-o-hymns. I would have to say, “It is Well”. I’ve always loved it but as a youngster, I remember hearing Joni Erickson Tada (does that date me?) sing it on a tape and that forever stamped it on my soul. I was amazed, even at a youngish age, that a woman in Joni’s state could sing and mean the words of this hymn. And how much more should I be truly content with my life and how God has blessed me?! Yowzers.

I love me some hymns. =0)

  36. I’m more a fan of contemporary Christian music, but if I had to pick a favorite hymn it would probably have to be Amazing Grace. It just really says it all.

  37. Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing, especially when my little boy sings it in his precious 3 year old voice. And he sings it a lot. All day. Every day. Hmmm, maybe I should choose another favorite…

  38. My favorite hymn is #606 in the Mennonite Hymnal – “Praise God From Whom All Blessings Flow.” It’s not the arrangement most folks know, and when you get a big group together who know it well, the rafters will RING with praise! Glory!!

  39. dude. can’t get enough of “it is well with my soul.” and rumor has it that i have been known to cry EVERY.TIME. i hear it.

    or something.

  40. Wow. So hard to choose. I think my favorite is probably “Be Still My Soul,” but “Jesus, Lover of My Soul” and “O Father, You are Sovereign” are tied for second.

  41. I love me some Jesus music, too.

    “Abide With Me”

  42. My favorite is “Victory in Jesus” and I see it’s on “Hymned Again” so I really need it. Plus I’m Annie’s mom and that should definitely count for something!

  43. i love so many. today my fave is “fairest lord jesus”

  44. 1. It is well with my soul.
    2. Amazing Grace (any version)
    3. Great Is Thy Faithfulness

Thank you for this chance! I’ll have to buy it if I don’t win. :)

  45. I LOVE “It is well”, “Jesus paid it all” and “Blessed Assurance”…but there are so many others that are wonderful as well!

  46. Victory in JESUS!!

  47. Well, let’s see if my winning streak holds!

My favorite hymn is The Old Rugged Cross. I have others, but that one likely tops the list. I saw someone play a solo on electric guitar once of “The Old Rugged Cross” and it was so fabulous I felt it in my gut. It sent chills up my spine.

Doesn’t really matter, but for some reason I always remember my grandmother’s favorite hymn, “Bringing in the Sheaves.” That is a old-timey classic if I ever heard of one!

  48. it’s hard to narrow it down, but if i have to choose just one: “I Want Jesus More than Anything” – beautiful!

  49. I have always loved “Blessed Assurance.” :-)

  50. My favorite is, “Just As I Am.”

We went to a really small church when I was younger, and I remember the Sundays when we could request worship songs, that was always the one I would request!

  51. My Gramma’s favorite was, “How Great Thou Art.”

They played it at her funeral, and I won’t ever forget it.

  52. Melissa S. says:

I Stand Amazed in the Prescence (Oh how marvelous, oh how wonderful)… this is hands down my fav, besides, you know, Amazing Grace which is like, everyone’s favorite. I am loving when Bart or Paul Baloche or Chris Tomlin takes an old hymn and does a catchy arrangment and it gets so much radio play… I LOVE IT! :-)

  53. Being a Methodist and all, you know I LOVES me some Charles Wesley hymns!

O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing
    and
    Love Diving, All Loves Excelling

  54. Donna Richardson says:

It is Well with my Soul

Absolutely love it and it makes me cry every single time!

  55. Jabber Jaws says:

Blessed Assurance – Jesus is MINE! Love, love, love it!
Sing Amazing Grace a lot too and the song that talks about prone to wander, prone to leave the one I love…. Take my heart and seal it. Love it too.

  56. “rock of ages, cleft for meeeeee…let me hyde myself in theeeeeeeeeee”. I love this one and I do an updated version (much like Bonnie Raitt would do it…or Annie Lennox)…PICK ME, PICK me OH pick meee won’t you pleeeezzzz…I am so worthy of a free gift!!! :-)

  57. I’m loving that video link!

A quick scan through the comments and I did not see “I’ll Fly Away”, which is great but you just can’t go wrong with “Amazing Grace” even when it’s the “Peaceful Easy Feeling” version.

  58. Oh wow, great giveaway!

“Be Thou My Vision.” We had it sung at our wedding.

  59. Ok I totally LOVE hymns so I’m very excited about this giveaway. But I can’t pick a fav. I’ll just mention “Be Thou My Vision” and “And Can It Be?” and “Love Divine” and “My Hope is Built on Nothing Less” (what is that one actually called?) I could go on but I won’t.

  60. There are too many favorites to just pick one, How Great Thou Art is a top pick.

  61. This looks like a great cd!! One of my favorites is the First Song of Isaiah. We used to sing that on Palm Sunday every year in the church I grew up in.

  62. Be thou my vision seems to be a common theme, and I will join it’s fans!!! :) Fun giveaway, thank you!

  63. Oh my goodness – I love so many hymns it is hard to choose! Amazing Grace and It Is Well With My Soul are always near the top of the list, though.

  64. Be Thou My Vision. It gets me every time.

  65. Come thou fount is my current favorite but I love them all, I really do! And I can play At Calvary on the piano and from what I hear it is the universal “first” hymn you are taught when you take piano lessons.

  66. “Great Is Thy Faithfulness”

    Because it’s so true.

  67. Oh, Boomama! I was sooooo glad to see you back-to-blogging today!!! YEAH!!! My favorite hymn is “Victory In Jesus”. My babies were rocked to sleep to my own little rhythm of it many times. I don’t know the words to any lullabies =), but I know every word to every verse of my favorite hymn.

Also, I love “Gentle Shepherd” by the Gaithers. It was sung at our wedding and our daughter’s. These are just 2 of my favorite hymns. I could names dozens more.

  68. Oh I heart Mercy Me something fierce!
As far as the hymns go I love Great Is Thy Faithfulness and How Great Thou Art.

  69. Oh, just reading everyone’s favorites
gives me much pleasure! I love the new
contemporary songs, but I miss the
    old hymns of my childhood!

    I can’t pick just one, so here’s
my top four…Great is Thy Faithfulness, IT is Well with My Soul, Trust and Obey,
    and Like a River Glorious!

    Hope I win!

  70. Let us not forget AT THE CROSS.

  71. Clemntine says:

To answer your question, “Oh, the Deep Deep Love of Jesus” is my current favorite hymn, but probably only because it’s the one our family is studying this month. Here’s a shock: my Favorite Hymn is subject to change on, oh, a monthly basis. As we look into the composer, the author of the lyrics (sometimes the same person, sometimes different, sometimes separated by HUNDREDS of years!), their personal circumstances and the historical times, I am continually amazed, awed, humbled and blessed by these incredible tools of the faith.

I’m enjoying my iTunes Hymned music as we speak. My kids (ages 3 to 17) dig jamming along to these great versions of timeless hymns. BONUS: it saves me from having to answer the age-old question “Where is My Hairbrush?”. Can we give the Lord a handclap?

  72. Love me some hymns, too. My fav has always been “Because He Lives”. I want a CD!!!!!

  73. Oh, love this and want this! :)

    Favorite hymn is:

    “The Love Of God”

The love of God is greater far
Than tongue or pen can ever tell
It goes beyond the highest star
And reaches to the lowest hell
The guilty pair, bowed down with care
God gave His Son to win
    His erring child He reconciled
    And pardoned from his sin

Could we with ink the ocean fil
And were the skies of parchment made
Were every stalk on earth a quill
And every man a scribe by trade

To write the love of God above
    Would drain the ocean dry
Nor could the scroll contain the whol
Though stretched from sky to sky

O love of God, how rich and pure!
    How measureless and strong!
    It shall forevermore endure
    The saints’ and angels’ song.

    Blessings,
    Dori

  74. Be Thou My Vision and Come Ye Sinners are tied as my favorite hymns of all time!

  75. It’s so hard to pick just one fave hymn….

“Great Is Thy Faithfulness” has been a fave since my wedding day.

“It Is Well With My Soul”

“In the Sweet By and By” (bc I played it on the piano while my Granny sang along before she died in the 80s.)

My 12yodd’s fave hymn is The Deep,Deep Love of Jesus from Selah’s Hiding Place. It’s gorgeous and has touched her heart the last few weeks.

    I know you didn’t ask for daughter’s fave hymn…

  76. My two favs are Be thou my vision and Come thou fount of every blessing. Beautiful and very of the truth!

  77. “Crown Him with Many Crowns” and “A Mighty Fortress.”

  78. My favorites change from time to time but I like I Will Arise and Go to Jesus. One of my all time favs is His Eye is on the Sparrow.

  79. Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing…

  80. i love come thou fount too! and the COOLEST thing is… my husband leads worship for our youth group, and he taught them a remix-ish version of it, and it is our junior high kids’ favorite song. i just get chills every time i hear them singing their hearts out to words that the church has been singing for generations. so cool!!

  81. There was a song in the hymnal that I always requested on the fifth Sunday of the month evening song service. I can’t tell you the number, but the song was, “My Tribute”. I could probably quote most of it here, but I won’t. :)

  82. Impossible–simply impossible–to choose a favorite. I was even tempted to run and get one of the many songbooks sitting on my bookshelf and thumb through it, but instead I’ll just name a few that hold special memories for me: I Come to the Garden Alone; Paradise Valley; Hallelujah Praise Jehovah; A Beautiful Life; Wonderful Grace of Jesus; Where No One Stands Alone; The Lord’s My Shepherd; The Great Redeemer . . . see, it’s impossible! I grew up on all these old hymns that in many settings have been set aside in favor of the new “worship” hymns (many of which I love as well–someone mentioned In Christ Alone and I think that is one of the most beautiful songs ever–but I agree with you that our children and our children’s children need to know the old hymns as well. Thanks for the giveaway!

  83. I’ll fly away is my absolute favorite.

  84. Oh what a fabulous giveaway!
I too am a lover of music and I love the old hymns a lot. If you aren’t familiar with this group, you need to be… the group “Selah” has several cd’s with FABULOUS hymns on them & they just take you to the throne of God!

I have several favorites, but here are two, “Precious Lord Take My Hand” and “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross”

Mmmmmm, now I’ve gotta put Selah in and listen to them! Man!

  85. O Come, O Come Emmanuel…and not just at Christmas…

  86. Charlotte says:

It is Well With My Soul (and knowing the story behind its creation makes it even more powerful)… and several of the Christmas classics (O Holy Night, Joy to the World, Silent Night).

    Thanks!
    Charlotte

  87. Michelle says:

    * All Hail the Power of Jesus Name
    * How Great Thou Art
    * Amazing Graze
    * He Arose
    * And Can It Be?

    To name a few…..

  88. “Blessed Redeemer” … I cannot sing that song without crying, and I normally can’t sing it at all.

    “Blessed Redeemer ..Precious Redeemer!
    Seems now I see Him on Calvary’s tree;
Wounded and bleeding, for sinners pleading,
Blind and unheeding, dying for me!”

I can’t even type the words without tearing up.

There are others .. I recall singing “Amazing Grace” with a friend, watching the sunset,at 5000 feet in a hot air balloon, over the eastern slope of the Bavarian Alps perhaps 10 years ago.

  89. My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness…The Solid Rock

  90. Glennell says:

What a Friend We Have in Jesus and It is Well with My Soul.

    Thanks,
    Glennell

  91. Robin M. says:

Many favorites, but one that quickly comes to mind is Holy, Holy, Holy.

  92. Love Mercyme! I’d have to say my favorite hymn is Amazing Grace. I especially love the version sung by Chris Tomlin!

  93. How Great Thou Art

  94. Hard to choose just one:
    The Old Rugged Cross
    How Great Thou Art
    Just As I Am
    Because He Lives
He Touched Me (My Dad made me & my sister sing this one time in church…not pretty!)
I too grew up with these old hymns and am ecstatic about the new acoustic versions!

  95. Great is Thy Faithfulness is very dear to me, but there are oh, so many!!!
    Thanks for the great giveaway!
We are sitting around here in Sarasota waiting for Tropical Storm Fay to decide whether to head our way, so we’ll just keep praying and singing!

  96. My favorite is a toss-up between “Sweet Beulah Land” and “Victory in Jesus.” :)

Thanks for the chance to win!

  97. He has an awesome voice! Yes, please!

  98. How Great Thou Art
I Come to the Garden Alone
    The Old Rugged Cross
    Bringing in the Sheaves
There is Power in the BLood

  99. I’ve heard about this CD from friends, I’d love to win it!!

  100. Great is Thy Faithfulness- especially the way Larnelle Harris sings it.

My dad was a pastor and so I have sung every verse of every hymn there is about a 150 times excluding “Just as I am” which was 150x at a service depending on how many came forward during the altar call. My husband teases me that I will be his lifeline friend if ever he is on “Don’t Forget the Lyrics” and needs the words to a hymn.
