Toby Flenderson Of HR Has Made A Sudden Reappearance

Typically the episodes that center on Michael’s irrational dislike of Toby make me uncomfortable because, well, I DON’T CARE FOR RELATIONAL TENSION, but tonight’s episode wasn’t quite as hard to watch in the end since Michael couldn’t go through with the sabotage. Plus, it made me so happy to see Jim and Pam sitting in the conference room again. Why, you wonder? Well, because I have no life at all, thanks for asking!

And, as always, I enjoyed watching Dwight rock his mustard shirt.

A few favorites:

1) “So why’d you come in here?”
“To socialize. And inform.”

2) Michael’s reaction to Toby’s return? PRICELESS.

3) “Now people always return my calls because they think something horrible has happened.”

4) “…and a painting of some creepy clowns that is apparently important to the structural integrity of the building.”

5) “Get off your high horse, Richie.”

6) “Well, Mr. Kurt Russell, you’re about to be served.”

7) “I tried to be friends with him. But that is like trying to be friends with an evil snail. I feel like I die inside. I feel like Neve Campbell in Scream 2.”

8) “I love catching people in the act. That’s why I always whip open doors.”

9) “That seems awfully mean. But sometimes the ends justify the mean.”

10) Creed: “Just pretend like we’re talkin’ until the cops leave.”

11) “It’s Caprese salad.”

12) “You said you were leaving and you made liar out of all of us…and then you came back which makes you the biggest liar in the history.”

And Jim bought Pam a house.

Love them.

So much.

  1. It was so good!!! Michael’s reaction to Toby was HI-larious, I totally agree.
I was so worried when Pam first saw the house. I’m so glad she loves it.
    Yay for a good episode!!

  2. Loved Dwight’s monologue at the end. Classic.

  3. I am all too happy to respond. I was an outsider until tonight. Because of you, because of my sister, Ginger, and my daughter, Cammie (who graduates basic training for the National Guard next week—PRAISE HIM!)…all who love The Office.

    I watched, I laughed, I chuckled, I guffawed (that’s a word I actually wore out during high school… don’t ask)…

it was great…I even wondered if you would add some of the lines that you actually DID add. THat’s right, I’d think, “wonder if BooMama is going to list that quote?”

    Thanks for getting me hooked…

I have to add that I loved the microwave thing. BIG PET PEEVE of mine…eewwwww!

  4. Now that Toby’s back will he, Pam, and Oscar start up the “Finer Things” club?

This wasn’t my favorite episode, but acceptably funny. My favorite quote was “The ends justify the mean”. I’ll have to remember that one.

  5. OMG – when Ryan tried to get Pam to clean out the microwave? I LOVE that she said that that’s why they have a temp. Good for her!

  6. “Basil.”

And? I wanted some resolution on the whole microwave thing. Was it a man or a woman who cleaned the thing out? BECAUSE HALLOOOOO, I’ve got some personal baggage in the area of workplace sexism.

    That’s all.

  7. You gotta love CREED’s reaction to the Police raid…

    Priceless.

    Jan

  8. I loved that it was Angela who approved of Pam’s microwave note. And Jim slowly inching away from Pam as she added more to it.

Also, that Dwight “framed a racoon” for opening a Christmas present and “framed a bear for eating garbage” or however that went. Dwight never stops being awesome.

The Michael/Toby relationship bothers and amuses me. Tonight it was funny, but sometimes it makes me really, really uncomfortable.

Mindy Kaling (Kelly) writes great stuff and tonight was no exception! (And could Ryan possibly get any skeevier? Gross.)

  9. First of all… Ryan and Ms. Kapur…. no words. Just gross.
Dwight monologue at the end… fabulous.
Toby and Michael… Hilarious yet I always feel bad for poor Toby. That puppy dog look on his face…. :(
JIM BUYING PAM A HOUSE!!!! EEEP!!! MY HEART FLUTTERED WHEN SHE SAID SHE LOVED IT!!! YAY!!!
Not my fave episode but definitely worth it.

  10. I totally agree that the best line all night was “the end justifies the mean” – hilarious.

I can’t figure out why Michael hates Toby so much. Did I miss something or did they never say? And I always feel so sorry for Toby, who seems like the nicest person in the whole office. Which is why it’s so ironic that he’s the only one Michael hates.

  11. Is there something wrong with me that my 2 favorite characters on that show are Creed and Jim/Pam (yes, they count as one)?

  12. EVIL…SNAIL.

I really almost spewed my coffee on that line.

  13. sadly, the office and smallville come on at the same time. tom welling is gonna win out every time!!! so smokin hot!!

  14. Stephanie says:

I liked the part where Ryan told Kelly he was going with some friends from high school… well a high school. Classic Ryan line! The whole episode was funny. And as long as there is a tender Jim and Pam moment, I am always happy!

  15. One word sums up tonight’s episode for me….CREED.

And for the record, I am thisclose to loving 30 Rock more than The Office this season – last night….perfection!

  16. #9, #9, #9, #9, #9!!!!!

I already worked it into a conversation with the hubster this morning!

    I love Michael.

  17. I was interrupted AGAIN by the baby crying, does she not understand the importance of Mummy watching “The Office”? Luckily I taped it, so I can watch it over & over & over…..

  18. I’ve sent a request to NBC to be invited to Jim and Pam’s wedding…haven’t heard back yet, but I’m hopeful. ;)

  19. Michael screaming NO NO NO NO NO NOat Toby made me laugh so hard I couldn’t breathe.

And I am concerned because Jim and Pam make me way too happy…

  20. I always look forward to your Office posts…here I sit, thinking that it didn’t have as many funny quotes as the last few episodes. I stand corrected, friend, and I’m laughing all over again. And all I have left to add is: Dwight’s perfect crime.

  21. I was seriously gonna cry if Pam didn’t like the house, which I thought was the case until she smiled and said she loved it. *sigh*

  22. 8) “I love catching people in the act. That’s why I always whip open doors.”

    9) “That seems awfully mean. But sometimes the ends justify the mean.”

I knew these 2 would make the list!! That’s how I watch this show now. All night I keep saying, “That will make the list”:-)

  23. Jim bought Pam a house. *swoon* I absolutely adore the fairly realistic picture of love they portray.

  24. the part about you have to have “cause” and michael said well “be-cause” I hate him

  25. I love the addition of Michael’s new boss – David. He seems like a typical “normal” boss, but so did Jan at one point and I’m wondering if they will let him go twisted like everyone else on the show…

  26. After a particularly tough time getting my 3-year old to bed, The Office was just what I needed. And reliving it this morning is awesome!

My man and I collect 30 Rock quotes like candy over here.

  27. It was awesome! Michael’s reaction to Toby coming back had me rolling. Everyone in the room was laughing. And LOVE Pam and Jim!

  28. I’m with you – I don’t get Michael’s hatred of Toby but this episode wasn’t too bad. I loved loved loved that Pam said she loved the house even when I don’t think she really did. And Jim was just too cute showing her around.

I knew the line “It’s Caprese salad” would make your list!!! That’s part of the fun for me watching the Office now – to try and guess which moments you will highlight.

  29. it was greatness… Creed was too funny

  30. Way to go, being unpredictable, Boomama.

I was betting my Cindy that the title for your post would be “The Ends Justify The Mean.”

    Way to keep me guessing.

  31. Jeremy used the evil snail line on me this morning because I turned the overhead light on while he was still sleeping. I have a feeling that one is going to become a family line forever.

And Jim and Pam’s house was WONDERFUL! That clown picture really cracked me up.

  32. I was super nervous that Pam was going to be mad at Jim… I’m so excited that she was happy about the house!

I can’t take any more drama in their relationship. I just want them to be happy. :)

  33. I find myself watching the Office and guessing which quotes you are going to find entertaining!!!

Last night was so uncomfortable to me! Mainly because I am not good with confrontation… however, in that same thought – I also LOVED Michaels response to the first sight of Toby!

  34. 10) Creed: “Just pretend like we’re talkin’ until the cops leave.”

That just gets me. I’m laughing now thinking about it!!!

  35. o.k. so why did everyone know what Caprese salad is? did i miss the salad memo? my favorite episodes: recently – 2 weeks ago – “I don’t want to get married in a tent like a hobo!”, of all time – cultural awareness – “Afganistananis!”

  36. Loved it.

My in-laws were here, so I didn’t have the focus I normally do, but the comment about the clown picture was my favorite, I think.

  37. So, how do you think Michael will react when he realizes he paid $500 for a baggie of Caprese salad? Just a small price to pay in an attempt to get rid of Toby?

  38. So with Pam on the microwave thing–and I would have handled it just like her. Nothing beats a good passive-agressive note.

  39. I don’t know about you but I was so nervous awaiting Pam’s reaction to the house that I almost couldn’t enjoy the show. I was so relieved when she loved it! Now I need to watch it again with my blood pressure at a normal level. Thank goodness for the wonder that is DVR.

  40. I am like some commenters above in that I tend to watch the show, wondering which lines will make Boomama the next day..

My favorite? The end justifies the mean. That may have to be a new family line ..

Love Creed.. and I’m with the poster above, I was holding my breath while Pam was walking through the house.. I don’t want any more drama, either. I love Jim/Pam together!

  41. I was wandering through “Bring the Rain” and came to look at your blog. I have to say, I am very pleased to see that some other ladies appreciate the crazy humor of The Office. My husband and I watch it and own all the seasons, and have watched them over and over again. It’s the only thing I really watch. And yes, the reappearance of Toby was hilarious, especially how angry it makes Michael that Toby cares more about the police not being able to solve real crimes. I love that it makes me laugh aloud!

  42. Quite possibly as classic an episode as The Booze Cruise. We rolled!

  43. There just HAS to be a commentary on this episode some day. I really need to know who’s house that is in real life. I know I know it’s t.v., and maybe the clown picture was added but the rest of the house looked very very real.

    Great episode.

  44. And Kevin’s line…you bought the house where you used to pee the bed.

  45. I am happy that it still seems like the show is back on track after some so-so times.

And I loved Michael’s “reunion” with Toby. So, so funny.

  46. Watched it last night. So great. I liked Jim’s comment about boarding up his parents’ bedroom so it will be the weird spare room they never talk about.
