An Office Is A Place Where Dreams Come True

The fact that we have a one-hour installment of The Office tonight sort of makes up for the fact that we didn’t have a new episode this past Thursday night, but it remains to be seen if it’ll make up for the fact that the last episode was so unfunny that it made me a little bit angry.

So I’m going into tonight’s episode with my fingers crossed is what I’m saying.

All righty. Here are the highlights.

1. “Today? Smoking is going to save lives.”

2. “We’re trapped! Everyone for himself!”

3. “SAVE BANDIT!”

4. Kevin and the snack machine.

5. “THE FIRE’S SHOOTING AT US!”

(Okay. No kidding. Probably the best first five minutes in Office history. But then again, I’m a huge fan of when stuff falls out of the ceiling. Especially when a cat is involved.)

6. “Stanley was attacked by his own heart.”

7. “…when no one would take hedded of my instructions.”

8. “The doctor has said that if I don’t find a way to respond more positively to my surroundings I’m going to die.”

“I’m going to die.”

9. OHMYWORD ANDY’S SINGING AND KELLY KAPOOR’S DANCING.

10. “Can you tell me why you had to cut the face off the dummy?”

11. “This is why we have training. And now Dwight knows not to cut the face off a real person.”

12. “I state my regret.”

13. “OHM OH MY GAH IF YOU’RE WEARING A DRESS PLEASE KEEP YOUR KNEES TOGETHER NOBODY WANTS TO SEE THAT OHM.”

14. “Here are some peaceful sounds. That one makes me think of death. It’s kinda nice.”

15. “I consider myself a good person. But I’m gonna try to make him cry.”

16. “I have got to make sure that YouTube comes down to tape this.”

17. “I normally don’t enjoy making people laugh.”

18. “Cut off your nose to spider face.”

19. “Michael, you are the reason I drink. You are the reason I live to forget.”

20. “If it were an iPod it would be a Shuffle.”

21. “My guess? Either he’s deeply depressed or an icicle has snapped off his roof and impaled his brain.”

22. “When you’re a kid you assume your parents are soulmates. My kids are going to be right about that.”

All in all, I thought tonight’s episode was leaps and bounds better than the last one, even though I wanted to cringe during the roast and during Andy’s song and especially when Michael walked off the stage. But in the end it was sort of sweet (EVEN STANLEY LAUGHED), and for just a few minutes, everyone in the office was one big happy family.

That made me smile.

What did y’all think?

  1. i thought it was hilarious, but i did want to hide my face behind a pillow when the roast was going on.
    the cat cracked me up~

  2. My fave quote was “I have got to make sure that YouTube comes down to tape this.” I literally laughed out loud!

And, go Jim and Pam…NBC, if you mess with them I will cut your face off!

  3. About to go and watch! I’m a cheater in reading ahead, aren’t I? :0) My Chris hates when I do that…

  4. The cat going up through the ceiling tile and coming back down four squares over…

I almost peed my pants. =)

  5. Jamie Friedrich says:

I’m sorry, but this episode was probably the best one since the Christmas episode where Michael brought the Ipod to the Yankee Swap. I think you covered all the bases. SO funny.

  6. This one was great. Oscar’s delivery on #15 was perfect. I had to leave the room for a moment during the Roast and came in during #20. Good roundup.

  7. One of the best episodes ever! Now I’m warning you that I love my cats as much as you love your children so I had to go back and see that it was a fake cat Angela threw, and then I thought the cat (and Oscar) through the ceiling was one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen. Second only to to the cat having been in the file drawer with no explanation in the first place.

I think Paul Lieberstein got the credit for writing this episode so that should give all the Toby haters some food for thought.

I liked the Jack Black part even though it was very very cringe worthy.

  8. What the honky-tonk is The Office doing on Sunday night? Wha???????

I missed it, even though I saw your tweet about it. Oh, Hulu…

  9. We were rolling on the floor laughing. The Office did not dissapoint! Our faves were the Ohmmmmm moments and the Ipod Shuffle. My husband almost choked on his iced tea on the last line. We had to rewind the opening and play it over and over. The cat was hysterical!

  10. The roast made me a little sad, the rest of time tears were running down my cheeks because I was laughing so hard, except when tears were running down my cheeks over Jim and Pam. Sigh. That Jim.

  11. What? Oh, I didn’t see you there behind that grain of rice.

  12. I thought it was hilarious, as well!

The first few minutes, I could NOT stop laughing. The cat flying through the ceiling tile…

    “I’m only 82 pounds.”

And you got my absolute favorite (don’t know why)…

“THE FIRE IS SHOOTING AT US!”

    Michael with “Corporate”.

And of course, the dummy, and Michael trying to talk Stanley into taking a turn because, what is he going to do if he’s all by himself and his heart goes out?

    Stinkin’ hilarious!

BUt you’ve been watching way longer than I.

Kriter Krit…I almost peed my pants over that one, too! ;)

  13. Haven’t really kept up with the office. I think I need to!!! :)

  14. I think it is the funniest show on tv and last night’s episode was enough to pull me out of my post-superbowl-so-sad-the-Cards-lost funk.

  15. I seriously thought it was the funniest episode since Diversity Day in season one. And I loved the Jim/Pam resolution. Even my hubby got teary-eyed!!

  16. By far, the first 5 minutes were some of the funniest I have ever witnessed on TV. Oscar coming trough the ceiling,Michael throwing the projector out the window…too much.

  17. The roast part made me want to cry – I felt so sad for Michael.

The rest was SO STINKIN’ FUNNY!

I think #13 and #16 were my favorites of the evening :)

  18. I thought it started off SO GOOD and then sort of trailed down into “eh, ok – pretty funny, I guess”. Too bad they can’t do an entire episode as funny as that first five minutes.

  19. Oh my goodness! I laughed so hard during the hour I had tears running down my cheeks! The “Staying Alive” part had me rolling. Just for the record…my husband is an ER doctor and yes, that story was true, a study was done and it showed that people do actually perform CPR better to “Staying Alive”. Who knew?!
    Take care,
    Julie

  20. I can’t believe we didn’t wake my son up, we were laughing THAT LOUD for at least the first five minutes.

The level of physical humor in that opening made the show feel really different, but I loved it anyway.

Loved Jim & Pam. Hated the Jack Black stuff, that made me a whole lot more uncomfortable than the roast.

  21. You forgot –

Stanley, you’re black! Obama is president!

I agree probably the funniest five minutes at the beginning.

  22. I thought is was hysterical and since I am not a huge fan of football, I was glad something was on that I could watch. But, seriously people, do we have to sacrifice the cat in the name of humor?!?!? As a cat lover, I was offended!!! And I hope PETA was on top of that so that “no animal was harmed in the making of the show,!!!”

We thought it was a scream!

    Blessings.

  23. I agree with Jennifer — I laughed out loud when he was trying to revive Stanley by reminding him Obama is President.

    and I loved the cat!

  24. I wanted Phyllis to get in on the roast.

I just loved it at the end when Michael came in and did his roast…”Bam!…Roasted…”

I have been suspecting that they are setting Michael up to move to corporate. So when he came back to the office after the roast, I just knew he was going to announce he was leaving for corporate. I was relieved when he didn’t.

It was a nice treat to have on hour Office after the Superbowl!

  25. I don’t even watch The Office – I love getting the very best parts from your blog. :)

  26. Last night’s episode was hilarious! So many great moments.

I am really enjoying how the wonderful writers are showing us Michael’s tender side juxtaposed against outrageous comedy.

  27. I love The Office. However, that being said, for a while in the middle of last night’s episode, I wished it was over already. But the end – Michael’s insults and the resulting laughter – made up for it. Overall, good stuff. But I think I just prefer my Office to come in 1/2 hour segments.

  28. I’m glad I’m posting this comment on the Internet versus saying it out loud in a group session, because y’all would probably throw stones, but I don’t watch the Office. (I ducked anyway)

However, I find immense enjoyment reading the recaps, Sophie, so please continue.

  29. Did anyone see the scenes in The Office ad after the show…Karen walking in…??? I don’t want to cause a riot, but oh my gah!!

  30. I keep picturing Kelly making out with Lord Voldemort! Poor Toby. One of the funniest episodes ever.

  31. Loved the You Tube reference and Kevin breaking into the snack machine. I’m laughing all over again.

  32. I agree- your conclusion, right on. I felt the same way.

Also, I ’bout died when he made the remark about YouTube coming down to “tape this”.

Also, #22. So sweet. I just love them. :)

    And in conclusion:
“An office is not a place people go to die.”

  33. The stress monitor going off as Michael got closer to Stanley…

Stanley laughing made my heart warm.

Them all pitching in about NOT wanting to be resusicated (spelling) is they didn’t have arms/legs and debating that…

Jim just being so sappy in love, and I love it!

Dwight heating all the doorhandles, so funny.

Stanley, “I am going to die!”

Michael telling Toby, friends only. So sad, poor Toby!

  34. I missed it! I just assumed it was a rerun or I would have taped it. Hopefully they’ll show it again, or maybe they’ll have it on the NBC site.

  35. I laughed so hard when they were asking, “What’s his name?”
    “I don’t believe I had the pleasure.”
“I drove you home last week. We were stuck in traffic for an hour!”
“His name is Michael.” I was laughing so hard! I kind of hoped that Michael had read some really kind things about everyone and then they felt really bad about how hard they were on him.

  36. We cackled when Creed declared the dummy had no wallet; he’s already checked. Ha!

I think the show is at its funniest, however, when it is still believable. When it crosses the line into “this would never happen in a million years in real life,” it loses something. There were a few times last night where it crossed that line and lost some of its funny.

  37. It came on too late on the East Coast for me… I’ve got it recorded…cant wait to watch it. I did see the first give minutes & I laughed through the whole thing!!!

  38. I loved the whole show. I thought the roast was hilarious even though I did feel a bit sorry for Michael. The first 5 minutes made me laugh super hard. Jim ramming the copy machine at the door, and Michael yelling, “every man for himself.” It was freaking hilarious…

  39. The Office makes me laugh very hard. Your recap. Just made me giggle again.

  40. We laughed at a bunch of the beginning–the cat, cutting the CPR dummy and the face.

We HATED the movie with Cloris and Jack Black. My word, that is gross! So it was not a keeper on our DVR.

  41. I don’t know why, but Andy’s song made me laugh! And I love it when we get to see little sweet snippets of Jim & Pam.

  42. Oh. My. Word. When Dwight cut the face off the dummy and did the whole Hannibal Lecter “Clarice” line, I thought I would surely need some Depends! I laughed so hard I hit rewind and watched it again!

And while I am a cat lover, I about burst my pancreas laughing at the cat coming through the ceiling tiles! I’m laughing all over again right now!

I am a huge fan of Cloris Leachman and Jack Black, but last night? Just made me want to take a shower and gouge my eyes out! Well, except for Cloris taking the electric chair up the stairs…and the 80’s music that ensued.

  43. There were definitely some great moments…#22 was my favorite!!!

  44. Can’t wait to see it! I feel asleep before it even started. This Lazy Mom can’t stay up that late!

  45. I loved everything you mentioned… but the whole illegal movie watching thing..??? That was just weird. I don’t even know…

  46. Oh my gosh, I laughed so hard. Re-reading those moments made me laugh out loud all over. And definitely the best intro EVER.

  47. “If you come across a person with no arms and no legs what’s the point of saving them? What kind of quality of life would they have anyway?”

“The pigeons must have flown West for the Winter.”

My parents were here, and they had never watched the Office, and by the end we were ALL nearly crying with laughter.

  48. I have not laughed that hard in a long time. Last night’s episode was a TiVo keeper! :)

  49. I seldom laugh out loud. But last night had me gasping for air from the laughing.
As i got farther down your list, it wasnt making sense. Those quotes weren’t ringing a bell. I guess i fell asleep before the end.
No matter. I saw Dwight salvage organs from a dummy and slice its face off, and that’ really all I needed to see to complete my perfect life.

  50. Loved the first part. Had tears rolling down from laughing so hard. The Jack Black movie thing was too weird and I just didn’t get it. I hated the roast part. But, Kelly dancing and the cat was too much!!!!

  51. One of the best episodes ever!

  52. What a fantastic episode! I love the heart monitor/beeper thing & when anytime Michael got near Stanley it would race!

  53. I forgot how funny the electric chair was going up the staircase until i just read someone’s quote about it! And when Dwight got the text from Michael saying he was taking a “personnel day” and Pam correcting him with “I think he meant personal day” had me rolling. The “What’s a text?” had me cracking up too!
    Take care,
    Julie

  54. I really really really hated this episode. The idea of the show is that a realistic office setting is being filmed for a documentary. I’ll grant you that most of Michael’s shenanigans would have resulted in his being terminated about midway through the first season, but before this episode, no one’s life was ever in danger. Any responsible corporate office would have cut right through Michael’s insanity and fired Dwight on the spot, if for no other reason than to avoid litigation from Stanley. Which brings me to: Why didn’t Stanley sue both Dwight Schrute and Dunder Mifflin? Schrute Farms is worth a pretty penny I’m sure. Also, when Jim said that 50% of marriages end in divorce, and basically better Pam’s parents than his, ugh. I’m sure if she knew that, it’d be Splitsville.

That said, Andy’s admiration of Pam and Jim’s movie criticism skillz totally killed me.

  55. OH, I forgot to mention that when corporate said they had to pay thirty-five hundred dollars for the dummy, and Michael said, “Five thousand three hundred dollars?”

  56. I recently watched all 4 seasons of The Office to catch myself and I’m not completely addicted.

“stanley, you’re so fat you crush you’re wife during sex and you heart sucks’

I saw Karen pregnant in the previews for this Thursday and I’ll die if it’s Jims baby. Pleasssee, don’t be Jims baby. That’s not possible right?

  57. I loved the opener; it was truly one of the funniest Office bits ever. However, it was rather irksome to me that Dwight didn’t get fired after INTENTIONALLY SETTING THE OFFICE ON FIRE and then cutting the face off the dummy. But it’s not the real world, even though I sometimes forget Jim and Pam are not in fact my best friends.

I absolutely could have done without the whole illegal movie watching. Why did it have to be such a completely gross plot??

  58. I was watching this on the computer and had to pause to go to the bathroom so i wouldn’t wet myself laughing. SO. FUNNY.

And I agree – one of the all time best openers!

  59. I love, love, LOVED this one. It is by far the best of the current season. Makes my Top Five of Best Ever. Oh – what was not to love? The cold open was freaking brilliant. And yes, the cat through the ceiling was a high point. The rest . . . it was just nearly perfect Office hilarity in my opinion. I can’t believe they haven’t done a roast before – it was the perfect set-up for so many Michael slams.

The Jim-Pam-Pam’s Parents-Illegal Movie-befuddled Andy was genius, too. And touching.

All in all – so worth staying up past the postgame show!

  60. Okay, also . . . not sure how many read officetally.com every week, but they usually post deleted scenes. There is one up already from last night’s episode and it is also pretty darn funny. I could never edit that show. It’s all too funny.

  61. “if it were an iPod, it’d be a shuffle…”

So THAT’S where that came from. LOL When I got up this morning, I saw that I friend had IMed me and said, “My penis is so small that if it were an iPod, it’d be a shuffle.” And I was like, “Wha-?” because he’s usually talking about how big it is…. as if I care.

  62. “He has no wallet, I checked.” -Creed

“Nothing stresses me out, except for having to seek the approval of my inferiors.”

“A lot of ideas were not appreciated in their time…”
    “.. electricity..”
    “…shampoo.”

I LOVED this episode. And I might love Jim a whole lot.

  63. I’ve recently started watching, and really enjoyed this episode. The OHM part was too funny….you hit a lot of the great parts. Was totally not into the Jack Black stuff…What the heck?

  64. I was laughing sooo hard at Kevin and the snack machine, and “the fire is shooting at us!” Hahahahaha…I loved it.

  65. Oh, my! This episode was so much better than last Thursday’s re=-run, which was extra awkward and has been on three different times already. I laughed SO hard when everyone was going mad during Dwight’s “fire drill”. The roast was sorta sad but I’m glad everyone was laughing at the end. And Jim and Pam? Can I get a collective “AWWWW!”?

  66. This one was so, so funny! But, I have to say I could have done without the icky Jack Black/Cloris Leachman illegal movie part. Really unnecessary!

  67. LOL, I was so watching the entire thing trying to pick out what you were going to blog about. I agree…awesome episode.

  68. I am in love with this post. Stinkin’ hilarious. I waited the entire Super Bowl in anticipation….

“Take a lesson from Stanley and jog up here…”

  69. My favorite line hasn’t been mentioned yet:

“I knew exactly what to do…but in another much more REAL sense, I had no idea what to do.”

Classic. The CPR instructor is a rock star for her attempt at conducting a class with that group. That actress deserves an emmy/oscar/sag/whatever they give the TV people. She BROUGHT IT!

  70. The first 5 minutes, oh my gosh I haven’t stopped talking about that. The most I’ve laughed in years!!

  71. I cringed during the roast, too…

You forgot Jim telling Pam to “don’t open your eyes.” Ha!

  72. To Sandy:
Jim didn’t say that about Pam’s parents! What he said was this: “Fifty percent of marriages end in divorce…that’s her parents and my parents.” I even went and looked it up and watched it again. But I agree that that would have been awful if that’s what he said.

  73. “The idea of the show is that a realistic office setting is being filmed for a documentary.”

According to whom? I wouldn’t classify the show that way at all.

  74. I was so so so loving the whole Jim and Pam sweetness, but I got VERY upset when Jim said what he said. They shouldn’t have made him say that. It makes me question if their relationship will last…. OH I HOPE IT DOES!!!

  75. LOVE LOVE LOVED it!!!
