Why Hello It Is Lovely To See You

Dear Internets,

It struck me this morning that I haven’t been a very strong blogger lately. My mama was visiting this last week AND I had a few meetings (if you’ve been reading here awhile, you’ll remember that, in addition to blogging, I also do some work for top-secret government agencies in the area of weaponry design and production, but clearly I cannot discuss such classified information here) AND I’ve been trying to mentally prepare myself for the fall television season. The Bravo line-up alone is going to require some pre-season training and, I feel, quite a few scrimmages.

And I don’t know if y’all are aware of this, but SEC football starts in three weeks.

I may need a moment to compose myself.

This week definitely had some fun moments, including a trip to the picture show this past Thursday night to see “Julie & Julia” with some friends. I thought it was just delightful. I read the book about four years ago, and I liked it a lot, but I loved the movie. Meryl Streep is stinkin’ great in it. Plus, it stands to reason that if you make a major motion picture about food and blogging, odds are that I will be interested.

By the way, I still can’t quit thinking about this bruschetta-type dish that Julie makes towards the beginning of the movie. Does anybody have a recipe for such a thing? The food in the movie looked FANTASTIC; I left the theatre with an incredible craving for beef burgundy (I would use the French terminology here if I had the foggiest idea how to spell it – oh, wait – it’s boeuf bourguignon – my WORD the Google is handy) and cannot wait to make it sometime this fall. Perhaps to accompany the aforementioned fall television / SEC football extravaganza.

Finally.

I thought I had two more giveaways before I take a little self-imposed giveaway hiatus, but I was wrong. I have four giveaways scheduled – all music-related (Christy Nockels, Selah, some Glory Revealed II concert tickets and one more giveaway from one of my very favorite singer/songwriters in the whole world, but we’re still working on the details). So stay tuned. Unless you don’t care for music. In which case I probably have absolutely nothing to offer you except for a bowl of Cheeze-Its and some leftover green beans.

(OH MY WORD. That reminds me. I made the best thing for supper Wednesday night, and I sorta/kinda made it up. I mean, others have probably thought of it before, but I am unaware of their efforts, so I choose to believe that for one whole time in my life I may have done something that was at least partially original. I will share it with you next week and DADGUMMIT I should have taken pictures, WHY DON’T I EVER TAKE PICTURES?)

So that is all. I hope you have a wonderful weekend. I’m going to mow the backyard now. It is by necessity and not by choice. I would appreciate your prayers.

Love,
Me

  1. I was watching PBS test kitchen and they made this four hour French Onion soup that looked so good.. I’ll bring it when we have Bravo night. ;)!

  2. You will just have to make it again and take pics. Non? And we love boeuf bourguinon round here…I often make it for Donn’s bday or Father’s Day, usually with roast potatoes. YUM!

  3. I too, absolutely adored the movie “Julie & Julia”–and not surprisingly, also found myself craving boeuf bourguignon! But, I really want Julia (or Julie) to come to my house and make it for me, ’cause it looks like A LOT OF WORK! I’m all about the eating part… ;-)

  4. Just to give you something to look forward to–we saw the movie last weekend and my mom made the beef (stuff) and said it was heavenly. She has had the cookbook and been just a hair obsessed with Julia Child my whole life but she’d never made that recipe. She said it gets better with every bite! I live an hour away from her and didn’t get any leftovers…there weren’t any. :)

  5. Glad to know the movie is good, I planned on going tomorrow!!!

  6. happy weekend! xo.

  7. Loved the movie, though the ending was very disappointing. :(

Looking forward to getting my Glory Revealed II CD in the mail….I keep checking!!! :)

  8. Yes, we are in the preparation stage for SEC football, too. Our first game is Oklahoma State, away, so that adds another week to the anticipation of a HOME GAME! Can’t wait! Go Dawgs!

  9. Funny that you should mention there is blogging in that movie – we saw the preview and before it even mentioned the blogging I said I wanted to see it – then of course Chris had to rag me about wanting to blog about a movie about blogging.

Harumph. See if he gets any of that boeuf bourguinon.

  10. I want to see that movie!

Your Cheez-It comment made me laugh! Have you had the Hot and Spicy variety? Oh My-Lanta, are they scrumptious!?!?! I could eat an entire box in one sitting. But I have self control…

Stop by my blog if you have a spare moment and see the wall hangings I “made from scratch” for our little boy…coming this fall!

    Take care!

  11. We had boeuf bourguignon in Paris and did not care for it. Maybe we just got a bad serving but we were in a hugely popular restaurant, full of local French folks…so, hum?
As for bruschetta, it is a true favorite for myself and my daughter. We make it every chance we get and when she came in from Atlanta and visited me a week ago, she brought the most delicious mozzarella cheese/anchovy paste from an Italian restaurant in the Highlands, La Tavola. She worked there for years while attending Emory and she bought some from Chef. We grilled the French bread with the cheese spread on it, topped with EVOO soaked cherry tomato halves and a chiffonade of my home grown basil, a bit of capers, and some rosemary. I nearly passed out, it was so good!
Can’t wait to see the movie. Will probably wait to buy it as I do most of my movies. I am always several months out of the loop, lol.

  12. I’m home by myself this afternoon and I’ve watched HOURS of “Flipping Out” on Bravo. I’m hooked. The guy is nutso and apparently I love it.

  13. My Word, the bruschetta of which you speak looked AMAZING!! I love bruschetta anyway, but with bread cooked in butter first…I felt a little faint just looking at it! You best post the recipe if you ever come across it.

And then, of course, the SEC football. I am thouroughly enjoying reading every excerpt I can about fall practice and all, but LET’S PLAY ALREADY….3 weeks is far too long.

  14. BTW, just re-read that comment and noticed a typo…I am so embarassed :)

  15. Julie and Julia: summer movie watching at its finest! Saw it at a theater that served food (I didn’t attend the $75 French feast they had: I just had appetizers…) The audience stood and applauded when the movie was over. Love me some Meryl Streep!

  16. BooMama, you said you made an amazing dinner on Wednesday but you didn’t say what was in it. Details?

  17. Southern Gal says:

Yahoo has a few videos of chefs cooking the beef burgundy while talking of the movie. You should go watch!

Watch out for the garter snakes. I have fond memories of following behind my daddy while he pushed the mower through knee-high (on me) grass and seeing chunks of garter snakes writhing in the grass. Fun, huh? Hopefully your grass isn’t that tall yet.

  18. Woo-hoo for SEC football! I can’t wait. Hope you have a great week.

  19. How can I win Selah anything….love them! love your quirky writing skills….appreciate transparency! xo

  20. Pat Layton says:

You are so funny girl!! Weapons!!??
I loved the movie also and made note of the Bruschetta that so many others noted. I DO have a secret recipe but if I give it to you, you have to give me the gun secrets!!
    Fair is Fair!
    xoxo
    pat

  21. I love me some SEC football. It’s the BEST conference in the whole college football league! I can hardly wait!

  22. Praying all went well mowing :) Oh BooMama, you make me smile every day!

  23. We went to Julie & Julia Friday night and what a joy to watch. Finally, a movie without gratuitous sex, although there were a few gratuitous curse words, and no one threw up. Have you noticed how many movies love to show someone barfing? I mean really, who wants to see that? Ever. As much as I loved the blogging and food I really enjoyed the sweet husband/wife relationships they portrayed in the movie.

I hope your lawn looks lovely and it didn’t take you too long to mow.

  24. I almost SWOONED over the bruschetta (all juicy and dripping-like…glory to God)! It was a wonderful movie and made me want to get crazy in the kitchen!

I really enjoyed the book, too, except for lo, all the many cuss words…so glad they didn’t go that route with the movie. Hats off Hollywood for taking the high road instead of the potty mouth. Amen?

  25. judy hescox says:

I have a crock pot recipe for beef bergundy do you want this– I can e amil it to you

  26. I’ve never heard anyone call the movie theater the “picture show”! Except of course, for Tim McGraw in the lyrics of “Don’t Take the Girl”. Aren’t you cute?! :)

  27. I loved that movie too! Clean and funny…didn’t know those two things could go hand in hand! I wish they would have showed the real life people at the end of the movie though.

  28. Just found your adorable blog and wanted to say hello. I want to see Julie & Julia and am glad to hear it was good! I just purchased the book and am trying to be good and read that before I see the movie :)

  29. Didn’t see the movie yet to compare…but just went to a cooking class last week and had the most amazing EASY bruschetta. One container of baby heirloom tomatoes (from Trader Joe’s – do you have those where you are?). Three – four cloves of garlic. A handful of basil…she dropped it all in the Cuisinart and slowly added 1-2 Tbsp. of olive oil as she pulsed. She put it over homemade pasta…Absolutely AMAZING!

  30. Go SEC!!!!!

  31. I absolutely LOVED Julie & Julia, and now, when I make my seven sticks of butter Pioneer Woman Flag cake, I imagine I’ve got a whole quartet of girlfriends in my kitchen, P-Dub, my Mimi (God rest her), and now, Julie and Julia. Good times, let me tell you!

  32. Wal-Marts is done!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry, but I had to get that out. Phew!

I loved Julie & Julia and I agree the bruschetta looked NUMMY!

  33. Woo-hoo! SEC football!

I’m pretty sure we could be bff’s until football season ’cause then I’m all “WAR EAGLE” and you’re all “GO DAWGS” and we just wouldn’t have a civil conversation until January :)

    … 19 days and counting

  34. Oh, girl. I have had a love affair with Julia Child ever since I can remember. I absolutley LOVED Julie & Julia. It could have been completely about Julia Child though and I would have been over the moon because Meryl Streep was just…well…fabulous!! The bruschetta in the beginning made my tasted buds absolutely TINGLE!! After the movie I went to the store and bought French baguette, basil, tomatos, etc.. (a good base for any bruschetta) and then turned around Saturday morning and proceeded to break my ankle. Not even kidding.

It’s been over a week now and I still haven’t had bruschetta and the basil and tomatoes…well..died. Now I just sit and watch Paula Deen make things like Peanut Butter Cups in a Blanket. Seriously. So make some bruschetta and take pictures. For me. :)

  35. as soon as we saw it, i went straight to the publix and bought tomatoes and garlic and french bread and then went home and turned out the best bruschetta ever. basically, you chop up as many colors of tomatoes as you can find. chop up some basil and throw it in there with them. salt and pepper the whole thing. then saute three or four minced cloves of garlic in a teaspoon of evoo, let them cool a little while, then throw them in with the tomatoes. cut the french bread on an angle and then saute the bread with a pat of butter and a drizzle of oil (saute both sides for extra yumminess). serve the bowl of tomato goodness on the table with the bread on the side – it gets soggy quick.

  36. Maryanne says:

I, too, developed a craving for the bruschetta in J&J, so I googled it. “Julie and Julia’s bruschetta” It’s in my favorites– one day it’ll be made!

  37. After seeing the movie I simply HAD to make the bruschetta…..I “fried” the bread on both sides in butter (of course) then rubbed it with a little garlic. Topped it all off with chopped ripe tomatoes, sweet onion, cilantro and parsley. YUM!!!
