Our morning started off on an interesting note when I was fixing breakfast and heard a cat meowing over and over again.
Critical piece of information: we do not own a cat.
David was making a Starbucks run (I told this story on Twitter earlier, but it’s worth repeating: when I told Alex that his daddy was at Starbucks, he responded by saying, “Make the world nice; fill it up with coffee”), so I didn’t have another grown-up in the house to verify that YES, SOMETHING WAS MEOWING, but the resident six year-old and I were pretty sure that what we were hearing wasn’t the result of a neighborhood feline who’d somehow figured out how to operate a megaphone. Somehow the cat was in our house.
Feel free to go play a series of minor chords on whatever instrument you have handy. Because YES. CREEPY.
Anyway, since I am very alert and process information very rapidly AT 6:40 IN THE MORNING, it took me about twenty minutes to remember that oh, wait, the cable guy was at our house a couple of days ago and might have left our basement door open. Which would have made it very possible indeed for a cat to find its way into said basement.
So. Long story long: yes, a cat was in the basement. The cable guy had in fact left the door open, and David discovered the open door yesterday and promptly closed it, and as a result a neighbor’s kitty cat had a lovely little slumber party at our house and was apparently READY TO GO HOME once the sun came up today. She BOLTED outside when I opened the basement door around 7-ish.
You’ll be thrilled to know that she is now back at home and resting comfortably with her humans.
Anyway, the rest of our day proceeded much more smoothly, and after the little guy finished school we stopped to get him an Icee. He fell in love with Coke Icees this summer at the beach, but we’ve had a really hard time finding convenience stores that sell Icees here at home. I cannot even tell you how many times we’ve driven by a quick stop and looked for the Icee logo on the door, but that red and blue polar bear is tough to find, my friends. We actually had our first taste of Icee success a couple of weeks ago when we were a few miles outside of town, and when we got back in the car, Alex said, “Mama! I KNEW they had Icees there!”
“How did you know?” I asked.
“Well, because when I looked through the window, I saw the words ‘COLD BEAR’ in big green letters on the back wall!”
OH. That sweet thing. Reading cursive can be tricky when the words are way up above adult beverage coolers, you know? But the good news is that “cold bear” is actually a mighty fine nickname for a frozen cola treat with a polar bear for a mascot. PLUS, we finally found a place close-ish to our house where Icees are in abundant supply. Alex is understandably delighted.
So that’s our day in a nutshell. Except for the part where Project Runway‘s season premiere was tonight and I squealed.
And in conclusion I would just like to say that I hope your weekend will be nice and filled up with coffee. Or Coke-flavored cold bears.
Whichever you prefer.

It’s a well known fact around these parts that I am a fan of both coffee AND cold bear, and it is in fact difficult to find that species of cold bear around here as well. Curiously, Sam’s Club is one of the few establishments in my area where one may in fact find both coffee and cold bears. :-)
I am SO happy about the return of Project Runway! And I’m so relieved that the switch to Lifetime from Bravo didn’t affect it’s wonderfulness at all!
I actually had a shiver of excitement come over me as I sat there on my couch watching Runway. I don’t know what it is – this show just makes me HAPPY.
Also, I might scream if I ever realize there is a cat in our basement that doesn’t live there. I get a shiver of a different kind just thinking about it!
We are amongst the lucky few who live near a great abundance of cold bear treats. It’s pretty much the only tool i have to get my three year old to eat! When she gets her i-ate-all-my-meals-all-week sticker chart full, she gets a cold bear!
and congrats on getting your uninvited guest out. creepy.
Our Target has them in Alabaster…maybe you have one close? Although..I don’t think it’s the cold bear kind. :(
One of my 8 year olds loves the cold bear, too. Besides Sam’s, our next favorite place to go is the Walgreens. I hope they have them in your neighborhood, because it’s really nice to stop by there, grab some make up and a prescription and wash it all done with The Bear. Good luck!
When I was pregnant with my third and very very sick all the time all I could drink was Icees. On vacation in Chicago it was like they had never heard of Icees before. We searched and searched in Wheaton for days. Finally at a dumpy little quick shop success.
Five years later I still can not drink one!
Girl you are singing our song of Icee’s and if you make it to a 7-11, they make slurpees(the original) and they are smoother and even better. We have them almost weekly in these here parts. Glad things are crusin’ at break neck speed with that little one growing up!
Our Sam’s Club has those Cold Bears!! I’m quite a fan, too! I, especially, loved them when I was humongously pregnant, in August, with our 3rd darling! I was having pregnancy difficulties and with the Hubby out of town, I was staying with my parents, who have a Casey’s a few blocks away. I indulged way too often!! :)
You may be able to get an Icee at Target. Or something very similar. Plus, they have Starbucks for you!
Thought I’d let you know that you can find locations that sell Icees by going to the Icee website and typing in your zipcode under locations. A little randomness, but I happen to know the president of Icee, he’s a really great christian man. He once let us borrow a bunch of Icee machines for a party.
“Catty”, huh? So glad is wasn’t a visitation from a possum or a skunk! I looked out on my back porch one evening on my way to bed, only to see A SKUNK happily horking up the cat food I had left out. I guess the hubby had good reason to tell me not to leave the cat’s food out overnight. YIKES!
I don’t care how old you are, you are never too old for an icee! Love them things!! :)
I’m going with a weekend filled with Diet Coke seeing as how my morning started off with a coffee mess after I forgot to put the plastic thingy in the pot and therefore put the filter and grounds in the pot withOUT the plastic thingy and ended up with an awful slushy, coffee ground mess.
How’s that for a run-on sentence?
I thought I’d pause before I added that just prior to the awful coffee mess, I woke up soaked in pee, but not my pee–my daughter, Sophie’s pee–and why can’t she just sleep all night in her own bed and leak her Pull-up and pee all in her own bed because I really do NOT enjoy waking up covered in pee although I’m thanking God for mattress covers which have to be the very best thing in the world for a mom and I’m also thanking Him that I did NOT decide after four days of staying dry at night–Sophie, not me, although I do stay dry at night–to stop the night time Pull Ups.
Deep breath.
The End.
The Comment Hogger
I would freak out if I could hear a cat meowing in my house. There is something scary about the sound of an unexpected cat.
We have Icees in abundance around here. My teens still have me stop and get them one now and then. So cute about the cold bear – I love new readers.
Yikes! I missed Project Runway! Thanks for mentioning it.
Let us all take a moment of thankful silence in honor of the tv gods who finally brought our beloved Project Runway back to us.
It’s the show even Hubby will watch with me and I’ve missed it!
so adorable :) i’d take a cold bear any time!
I love Coke Icees too! For some reason Icees are hard to find and when I do find them they are strange flavors. I am all about regular coke icees.
Doesn’t Burger King still sell Coke Icees? At least here in ATL they do. Check it out. I love a Coke Icee!
Boo! I missed Project Runway last night! I can’t believe I forgot to set my dvr.
I would be f-reak-ed out if there was a cat in my basement!!!!
Mu hubby and I am ICEE FANATICS!!!! We grew up in Louisianna and our fave was the mix of coke and strawberry. It’s Ahhh-Mazing!! We have problems finding them here, too. The ones in the mall just WONT do…it’s all about consistancy. We will drive out of our way to get the perfect icee.
I might be repeating some advice here, but around these parts (GA) Krystal, Burger King and some McDonald’s serve frozen cokes.
I love coke icees! And slurpees! I had them all the time when I was pregnant (yes, all five pregnancies, I have consistent cravings). They are perfect in the summer. You’ve got a smart boy.
One time, a dog got under our house and was running under the ac duct work thumping it with every step, so it was very loud AND it happened in the middle of the night. Talk about scary!
You can get an icee at Burger King now and around us they have a Happy Hour from 2-5….32oz for $1 if that won’t make a kiddo happy nothing will.
I love Coke Icees (although we call them slushies in these parts). Some one else beat me to it but Burger King has them… or at least the BKs above the Mason-Dixon line do.
I’ll definitely take a cold bear!
I love it! COLD BEAR – Ha ha ha!
I am just learning to sew and have finally managed to catch onto the Project Runway phenomenon…
Oh girl, we LOVE us some coke icees…and did you know that the Burger King has them too?? And for only $1! Don’t ask how many times we’ve gotten those this summer….it’s a very ungodly number. :)
A friend of mine awoke one night to find ‘her cat’ laying on her in the bed. She patted it and it snarled and growled like a tiger. Turns out a neighborhood cat had come in thru their cat door. Eww.
I’m a dog person though so maybe there are people who would find this kind of sweet.
Have a great weekend!
ahh Cold Bears and the return of Project Runway! Life is good. Recorded the show and I’m hoping that the move from Bravo to Lifetime didn’t take the quirk out of PR. And this move to LA, what will happen to the trips to Mode? I don’t about this. Guess I could just watch and see or I could stand around and angst about it.
When I was pregnant with my baby girl I craved Coke Icees–big time. It was perfect timing when around my 8th month I realized I could get them at the Burger King drive through and didn’t even have to get out of the car and waddle all the way inside.
I love Coke Icees – but they are very hard to find here in Guam. I found a movie theater that sells them…for FIVE dollars!! But I paid it. It was so very tasty…even if my wallet didn’t like it.
That was darling. Have a good weekend!
That was a good chuckle to “cold bear” — TOO FUNNY!!
Coke icees were about the only thing I could keep down when I was pregnant with my Alex. I still cannot eat one, but my kids all love them!!!
My husband knows the pain of trying to find the bear logo. He became an expert on where you could buy one in town.
awwww so cute!!
For the last 3 years of the 5 that we have lived in our home, a momma cat has had kittens at our home. Under the wood pile, under the front porch, inside of the shed – discriminant she is not.
We can not, for the life of us, figure out why she has chosen us – We have a HUGE dog! But every year, once twice a year, we pack up the kittens and take them to the local no-kill shelter (well, the first year my mom took two). Cats are mysterious things!
