So here’s the thing.
I haven’t posted the last few days because Sister and I have been completely obsessed with the whole Mississippi State / Auburn / Cam Newton fiasco. It’s ridiculous, really. We are certified grown-ups, and the other night we were on the phone at ELEVEN THIRTY IN THE PM talking about the most recent articles we’d read. Madness.
And before you start thinking that since I’m a State fan I clearly want Cam Newton to be ineligible and for us to be right and for Auburn to be wrong, stop. That isn’t the case at all. On the Myers-Briggs I am an INFP – about the highest-scoring “P” you ever did see – and I’m a big-time idealist. BIG TIME. My tendency is to think that if we can just get all the facts and if everybody will tell their stories, it’ll all work out and we’ll all be fine and everybody will be friends and stand in a circle and sing the “Friends Are Friends Forever” song and then we’ll walk hand-in-hand into the sunset.
Because that’s very realistic.
What’s been even more annoying (for me) is that on top of my idealistic tendencies, I HATE TENSION. I DESPISE IT. So what has had me the most preoccupied throughout this whole thing is wondering if State and Auburn – who traditionally get along pretty well as far as Things SEC are concerned – will make it through with their mutual affinity unscathed. (For the sake of clarity: State didn’t turn in Auburn. State turned in information that related to the recruitment of Cam Newton. But that information affects Auburn. And that’s created some tension.) Keep in mind that we live in Birmingham, and every time I pass a car with Auburn tags I feel like I need to duck a little bit. Or maybe wave. Or maybe roll down my window and scream, “WE DIDN’T MEAN ANY HARM – WE WERE JUST TRYING TO FOLLOW THE RULES!”
And then I wonder if I should maybe offer the Auburn fan a piece of candy and ask if I can help out with some errands.
On top of all my crackerjack investigating, I was also trying to get the house ready for company this past weekend. My aunt, my cousin Paige and Paige’s little boy J. came over Friday and stayed until today. We had more fun! just more fun! eating way too much Full Moon barbecue and visiting and drinking coffee and going to the Steinmart 14-Hour Sale and drinking coffee and going to Home Goods and visiting and drinking coffee. It was also J.’s 4th birthday, and we were so tickled to celebrate it with him.
Saturday night I warned everybody that I was going to HAVE TO WATCH the Mississippi State / Alabama football game, and they were all very sweet about it and encouraged me to do whatever I’d normally do when I watch the Bulldogs. Well, you know how sometimes you can’t really appreciate how NOT AT ALL NORMAL YOU ARE until you have to expose your “normal” behavior to people who don’t usually see it? That was pretty much my experience this past Saturday night.
Because here’s the thing: no matter how much I might like to think otherwise, IT IS NOT NORMAL for a grown woman to yell at the TV during a college football game and EXPECT THAT THE YELLING MAKES A DIFFERENCE. This behavior feels perfectly fine and perfectly acceptable when it’s just me and my fellas at home – or when I’m watching a game with Sister – but I actually felt a little embarrassed for myself when I dragged out my football crazy in front of my aunt and my cousin. They are typically spared from my football hijinks because 1) they don’t really get worked up about football and 2) they’re Ole Miss fans, so they’ve never gone to State games with me. But Saturday they got the full experience. It is sure to be a precious memory for them.
I did manage to dial down my reactions to more comfortable levels by the second half, but as I told Melanie and Sister today, I realized Saturday night that I’ve developed some fairly self-centered game-watching habits over the years. I like to be able to move around. I like to be able to clean my countertops / vacuum / fold nineteen loads of clothes. I don’t like to talk. I like to yell. I like to yell a lot. I like to mute the announcers on occasion because sometimes they get on my nerves. When things get tense I like to sit VERY CLOSE to the television. I like to scream, “TACKLE HIM, DADGUMMIT” and “COME ON, NOW, SON.” I like to walk outside for fresh air when necessary.
You can imagine what fun this behavior must be for others.
Anyway, that’s what’s been going on around here. I think I’m going to put up my Christmas decorations this week (I’d offer you a detailed rationale for the decision to decorate so early, but this post is endless, and quite frankly you’ve suffered enough already), and it’s also time for me to get a stack of Post-its and my Christmas magazines and mark all the new recipes I want to try. Thanksgiving is going to be at our house this year, and I’m officially on the hunt for some new side dishes. If you know of any that are especially good, feel free to leave a link or a recipe in the comments – I’d be oh-so-grateful.
And if you didn’t know it already, the Bulldogs ended up losing to the Crimson Tide. All my yelling didn’t make a bit of difference. CAN YOU EVEN BELIEVE THAT? But I think I’ve taken the loss surprisingly well. I haven’t even polished off the rest of the miniature Reese’s that are in the candy dish in the den. But we play Arkansas next Saturday, so those precious few Reese’s may not be long for this world.
Happy Monday, y’all!
Sounds like you and I should watch a game together. Although, we’d probably scare everyone else off.
I think the annoying thing about scandals like this one are that I want everything to be settled NOW–would make everything easier. Of course, college football will go on, everyone will speculate, and if anything does get decided, it will probably happen next spring.
I have a small interest in this one as a UF alum–I remember being so sad when Cam Newton got caught for stealing that computer while at UF, because he had a reputation for being a nice guy (and a great quarterback). I always hate it when these kids with such a chance to succeed jeopardize their future for short term gain.
On a lighter note, of COURSE they can hear you when you scream at the TV, I’ve screamed at my Gators for years. It’s just that sometimes they don’t listen to my suggestions. :-)
In my family, it’s Duke basketball. Correction … my FATHER and Duke basketball. The whole family loves it, don’t get me wrong … we search down places to watch the game if it isn’t being carried on tv … but my dad just cannot make it through without lots of shouting and exhorting Coach K and the boys to “Come ON!!!” My mother once had to take my niece (now in her 20s and — happily — unscathed) out of the room because she was upset by all of her grandpa’s carrying on.
He does the same thing with Iowa football, but is not quite as emotionally involved; especially when Iowa is playing Iowa State, he waits until the first quarter ends and then roots for whoever is behind. Fervidly.
i went to my daughter’s college team’s game. couldn’t care less who won. had a sore throat from yelling at the game. came home and yelled at the tv. We would have been on opposite sides at the game but it would have been fun. My sister-in-law usually gets all of Sunday dinner fixed during the Bama games. glad your weekend was good. it was my birthday weekend and it was also good.
I spent many years screaming at the UK Wildcats, but have given that up. On a side dish related note, the 5th anniversary “Special Edition” of Cooking with Paula Deen has a recipe for “Grits, Smoked Gouda, Bacon and Corn Bake” that totally sucked me into paying $5.00 to get the magazine at the grocery store! Thank goodness the recipe calls for low-sodium chicken broth – I’m sure that will counteract the caloric effects of the heavy whipping cream and the smoked gouda……Can you say “OH, MOOOOOO!”?
I can identify with the game day habits. Laundry is one. Sun Drop is another. My husband gets GIDDY about calling flags before the ref does, so I guess it’s really just a family affair.
And War Cam Eagle. I oh so hope for him to pull through this. I love his excitement for the game.
Boomama – You know things were strained when Auburn fans were pulling for Bama last Saturday night!! It was crazy!! I hate conflict too. Can’t we all just get along? :) I don’t think AU did anything wrong. I don’t think Cam did either – His Daddy? I’m not so sure about…
I’m just glad to hear it’s normal to yell at the TV…HUGE Clemson fan here and we fans have been given lots to yell about this season.
Here is the recipe I’m required to bring for Thanksgiving every year…it’s easy and can be used as a side dish or dessert with a scoop of ice cream.
Apple/Cranberry Casserole
3 cups chopped,unpeeled apples
2 cups raw cranberries (you get in the produce section)
1 can pineapple tidbits,drained
1 cup chopped nuts ( I use pecans)
3/4 cup sugar
3/4 cup brown sugar
1/3 cup flour
1/4 cup oatmeal
1 stick melted butter
Layer fruit. Mix sugars, flour and oatmeal. Sprinkle over top of fruit. Pour melted butter over all.. bake at 350 for 30 minutes.
Delish!
I am a single girl..Bama fan. My friends are not even allowed to watch a football game with me. I’m afraid it might alter our friendship. On the other hand, sounds like you and I could watch together quite easily (not this past Saturday, mind you, but most other games.)
I watch LSU football the same way. Last Saturday when we beat Bama, I thought I was going to put myself into labor!!! I’m loud, which I learned from my daddy. And I jump… which is probably not recommended in the 9th month of pregnancy, but I’m just guessing. And I’m also not opposed to muting the announcers on occasion. I mean, really, what do they know?!?
My husband is a die hard Gator fan. And we live in South Carolina. I feel your pain. His behavior during the game, was, well, not something I want to talk about. I’ve tried to remind him to be grateful for the benevolence of the Gators…that without them South Carolina wouldn’t have a coach and Auburn wouldn’t have a quarterback.
Oh Boomama! I’m pretty sure we were separated at birth! The way you describe watching your team sounds EXACTLY. LIKE. ME. Only change the team to the Longhorns. And its been an INCREDIBLY FRUSTRATING year, this year for us Texas fans…(and my husband always tells me as I’m yelling at the TV – “you know they can’t hear you, right?” – makes me CRAZY!). So, if you ever want to watch a game with someone who TOTALLY GETS how NORMAL AND RATIONAL you’re acting, I’m your gal!
Happy Thanksgiving!
Amy
I understand. Cooking is my game day go to, especially with chopping and dicing — knives are such a great stress reliever.
What do you mean “IT IS NOT NORMAL for a grown woman to yell at the TV during a college football game and EXPECT THAT THE YELLING MAKES A DIFFERENCE.”??? I’ve been doing that for years. My kids have always warned friends that might be around during a Gator game that Mom is intense. They also take great pleasure in imitating my signature phrase: “Git him back there!” or “You are giving him all day, git him!” :)
Saturday night was just hard here, what with the Gators showing up with no game plan and very inferior coaching, and Baylor managing to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. I got the idea maybe the Lord is trying to refine me a bit in the area of college football…
Hi Sophie,
Here is a winner of a recipe from Paula Deen. NO BUTTER! Weird for her, but par for this recipe. I made it last Thanksgiving for the first time, and it seems very fall-like. However, you’ll enjoy it year-round. Learn from my mistakes, however. Learn.
1) My wild rice bag called for three cups of water to one cup of rice. Paula calls for two cups of water to one cup of rice. I like to make recipes by the book the first time I do them so that if something goes wrong, I’ll know it wasn’t one of my modifications. However, I wish I’d gone with the rice bag instructions because the two cups of water made for some tough rice. And if you’re like me and new to wild rice, it takes a long time to cook. I now use three cups – much better.
2) Make only half the dressing recipe. Instructions tell you to only use half, but really, just make half and not have to worry about using the rest as a salad dressing (though I know it might be good). The only reason I would intentionally make a full recipe of dressing would be if I were making two recipes of the rice salad in fairly short order.
I saw Paula and her sons make this on TV, and it looked good then and I was so pleasantly delighted at how good it really is! ENJOY!

Sounds like we’re two peas in a pod when it comes to our SEC games and I personally believe there’s nothing odd about screaming at Verne, Gary, and everybody on the TV. My fiance decided to propose at the U of A on Arkansas/Alabama game day. After the game he had to ask if I was still excited about our engagement. I won’t lie, that loss tainted the day just a bit.
On Cam Newton, fascinating. I can’t get enough information on it.
I’m glad your Bulldogs have been doing well this year. I just hope they don’t do quite as well on Saturday. Go Hogs Go!
This Auburn tiger still loves you and your blog!
If it makes you feel any better, my team isn’t in the SEC (we’re Big 12 folks) but I still can’t stop doing my own investigative work on the Newton situation either! Perhaps it has something to do with my growing up in Baton Rouge?
Anyway, here’s my mom’s famous Sweet Potato Crunch recipe. It’s amazing :-)
3 c. mashed sweet potatoes
(use regular sweet potatoes, not canned)
1 c. sugar
1 tsp. salt
½ stick butter, melted
2 eggs, beaten
½ tsp. vanilla
½ tsp. cinnamon
Preheat oven to 350°F.
Combine above ingredients and pour into buttered baking dish.
TOPPING
1 c. light brown sugar
â…“ c. butter, melted
(measure butter after melting)
â…“ c. flour
1 c. pecans, chopped
Combine topping ingredients and sprinkle on top of potables. Bake at 350°F for 40 minutes.
I love how you love your school and sports. It breaks my heart that Cam Newton might not be the person we thought he was (I just read a great article about him and his father in SI). My cynical side says it is nothing new though, and for every time we know this happens it is going on ten fold behind the scenes.
I have been following the Cam story and I am hoping he will be cleared. Nothing against Auburn and I am pulling for them to get to the National Championship game.
I think I may be worse than you while watching football. Seriously, I had to go outside and sit in my swing after we lost to LSU this year. I pace around the house, yell at the players, lol I am a great couch coach! I was very happy that the Vols beat Ole Miss. :))
My Christmas decorations have been up for almost 2 weeks. I love Christmas and my 22 tubs of decorations. lol
Don’t miss a game this season! Keep track of your favorite team’s schedule, whether it’s the kids soccer games or your hometown football team don’t miss a minute of the action with this simple way of tracking the game schedule by using Expo Markers and a whiteboard!
I also become aware of my SEC football (specifically Auburn) craziness when I…
chat with other women/moms and wait for them to discuss with me the design-flaws of the BCS
how Mark Richt is not the coach he once was and that his encouragement/condoning of rule-flaunting and off-field transgressions is offensive to those of us whose coach instructs his team to go to their rooms after games and get on their faces and thank their Lord (sheesh that was long)
how I’m only mildly annoyed by my husband’s addiction to rivals.com, auburnsports247.com, espn.com, etc.
how now that he is on a hunting trip in MT and sans internet, I’m reading the blogs and forums without his asking
how its perfectly normal that my 9 y-o daughter has asked if Saturday during her soccer tournament she was Super Cam or Nick Fairley (she’s a defender but scored the teams only goal during the tournament. Also, she’s 5′ and likes to LEAN HARD on the other team, so either comparison is pretty close.)
how I tell ESPN’s quack addicts to “bring it” when they talk about Oregon’s offensive dominance and speed
how, while driving and ALONE, I threw my hands in the air and yelled, joyfully, “TOUCHDOOOWWWWNNN AUBUUUUUURRRRRNNNN!!” Saturday as I made a run for cupcakes for the soccer team and really wished someone was nearby to give fivers or bust knuckles or chest bump (just joking on the chest bump)
how I’ve sat here and listed my crazy out for you, knowing that you’ll totally understand
I still pulled for MSU over ua. I’m a lifelong Tiger and AU alum, so it’s just part of the bargain: HATE bammer. I think I’d support the Taliban if they were to play bammer in any sport.
I love my Tigers. I pray for Cam. I hope it’s all smoke and red herrings. For the sake of his relationship with his father, I hope no money changed hands and that they can work through any harm done by his dad allegedly asking for money for his son to play anywhere.
Either way, I’ll yell “War Eagle” to the end of my days.
Well, even though I don’t follow SEC football at all, your descriptions of your gamewatching behavior gets me every time.
But my favorite part of this post: your Myers-Briggs profile is identical to mine. I always knew we’d be bffs if I lived anywhere near you… assuming I could get over my Pac10-centric bigotries and become a Bulldogs fan. :)
Oh Boo Mama you are so NOT alone! We are die hard Razorback fans so yes this weekend might be a tad hard for you and I but we will have such fun. We have also followed the whole Cam Newton story and I hope things turn out okay for him.
I have also been considering decorating for Christmas BEFORE Thanksgiving—is this just wrong? I have a great carrots with bacon recipe that I will send later….gotta go now.
I live in Auburn and I hafta say that I still love y’all! HA HA!
I am a big, (both literally and figuratively) Auburn fan. I don’t know what to think of the whole Cam deal. I like to think our coaches and powers’that be are not so dumb to play a kid who might turn out to be ineligible. Tired of too many asteriks by our undefeated seasons.
I also hate what this is doing to our 2 teams, I always considered us cousin teams and Bama and Ole Miss are cousins. In my mind, that makes perfect sense.
I live in Mississippi, so right now, none of my friends and I are talking about it. Football can get mean enough on its own, we don’t need anymore help.
Hi Sophie, I’m a dedicated lurker. I thought I’d stop by and say Hello. My insane football actions occur when I watch the Patriots. Thankfully they won last night. I wanted to tell you about the THE THANKSGIVING I TRIED DIFFERENT SIDES. It was a debacle, with everybody complaining and wishing for their favorites. If you’ve ever seen The Diary of a Mad Housewife- it was like that. So I’m just sayin, venture into new territory at your own risk!
Oh Boo, I’ll let you run some errands for me if it will make you feel better :O)
But as you know, loyalties run deep. So as an Auburn graduate, resident and fan, I have to believe Cam is innocent until proven guilty.
Still love ya…mean it!
You mean it DOESN’T help to yell at the TV during a football game?
There’s not a place this dip has ever been taken that at least 5 people don’t ask for the recipe. (You can serve it with any kind of chips, but the Scoops kind tend to get all the goodie best):
mix together:
3/4 c. apple cider vinegar
3/4 c. veg oil
1/2 c. sugar
add to it:
3 c. black beans – drained and rinsed
3 c. shoepeg corn – drained and rinsed
thinly sliced scallions (a bunch)
chopped cilantro (a bunch)
8 oz. crumbled feta cheese
You can thank me later!
You know what else isn’t normal? Hearing about the whole Mississippi State/Auburn/Cam Newton situation out here in SoCal and worrying, wondering and thinking about the whole thing from the sole perspective of “how is Sophie handling all this? Has she worried herself into a frenzy yet?” And I’ve never even met Sophie! And when I read this today I just giggled because I was absolutely certain this was exactly what you were doing about the whole thing! Then I saw that Alabama beat your Bulldogs as I was watching College Gameday on Saturday and I was so sad for you, but really at one point they were the #1 team in the nation and that had to be expected on some level right?! At which point I realized it was high time I got myself interested in a college football team of my very own (difficult to do when you’re the graduate of a womens college!) b/c living and dying by the fate of teams rooted for by people I’ve never met no doubt falls into the “obsessive wingnut” category. Don’t think I wasn’t happy for Melanie and her Aggies this weekend too!
I think I need a hobby…
I don’t comment often, but had to say that it brought delight to my heart that your Myers- Brigg rating is INFP. I’m an INFJ which is crazy close, not to mention we share the same birthday. I do apologize for the over excited delight. It’s not everyday one brings it up in conversation. :)
You mean there are people who don’t yell, fold laundry, and vacuum during football games?
David is a UT fan. He’s managed to tone down his behavior in his old age, but when things got tense during a Vols game he used to hop on the riding lawnmower at halftime and mow the yard. Even the parts that are plain old dirt. I’d look out the window and he’d zoom by doing about 30 mph, teeth clenched and white knuckling it. Good times.
Sophie,
I was at the game Saturday with my sister, who is in grad school at Alabama. She has been given some pretty “suite” tickets this year, and I was asked by her not to cheer for MY BULLDOGS because it’s disrespectful to the Bama fans who pay a pretty penny for their tickets. Yeah right! I still cheered for them, but I promise I have never been so intimidated sitting in someone else’s stadium!
The entire game, I kept thinking how much more at home I will feel this Saturday against Arkansas!
Go Bulldogs!
Would you believe I went and did the Myers Briggs again because I forgot what I was? I totally did. And I am still an ENFJ and I remember that because Bill Clinton and I share the same personality type. YOu know, because I am very Presidential.
Okay, thank you for the post because I once again know my personality type.
I yell at jockeys, whether I’m watching on TV or at the track…I cracked up at the trainer yelling “Don’t fall off, Ronnie” when Secretariat was 31 lenghts ahead at the Belmont in the movie.
1. Those announcers can be so stinkin’ annoying. Who cares what they really think?
2. Doesn’t everybody need a lot of space and jobs to do when watching SEC football? I thought that was normal! You gotta get rid of that nervous energy somehow!
3. Any other weekend I would support your Bulldog craziness, but this weekend I have to root for my Hogs. Sorry!
Here’s a great recipe for cranberry relish- but it makes a TON, so be prepared for lots of leftovers!
Mennonite Cranberry Relish
2 12 oz package fresh cranberries
4 red apples – cored, keep peels on
3 oranges
1 can (2 cups) crushed pineapple drained
1/2 cup sugar
Peel oranges. Save one peel.
Chop everything in a food processor. (I don’t have one so use my pampered chef chopper which is a pain in the booty but gets the job done.) Add zested orange peel. Mix and add sugar. Cover and refrigerate 6-8 hours.
Stir and serve.
I am going to tell you a story of a Mississippi girl I know, born and raised in the SEC. MagnoliaMiss learned to shout “are you blind, ref?” from her father’s knee while attending college basketball games and watching football each season. Briefly she liked Ole Miss due to Archie Manning, the most important man since General Lee to defend the South from the Northern Aggressors. Only Southern girls know this: war is fought each fall on each SEC and ACC fields below the Mason Dixon line. Period. Very, very deadly serious stuff. It is Scarlett O’Hara shooting the Yankee to defend Melanie and Tara each autumn, complete with tail gate parties and marching bands. MagnoliaMiss, howevah, married a Yankee and had sons. Yankee husband sat in mute shock for years each fall as his rebel wife watched sports and morphed before his eyes into a person he did not know existed. He soon learns to yell and act crazy as well. MagnoliaMiss now has a cowbell for MSU, important political events, as well as New Year’s Eve. MagnoliaMiss is also loyal to the FSU Seminoles or any Southern team vs a Yankee team (bless their hearts). She, like Sophie, has to be near the TV during tense times, and will leave the room if it becomes too tense or in overtime scary moments. Also, per Yankee husband, she often has arms in goal post positions and/or cheerleading poses near screen. This year, as we all know, for a few games LSU had some strange juju going on and won unexpected games with weird plays. For some reason this MagnoliaMiss decided (due to cajun cousins from both Baton Rouge and New Orleans) to cheer for LSU vs UT. Experiencing the Les Miles voodoo juju coming throught screen, prior to the play and penalty that won the game, the center shot ball over QB’s head. The refined MagnoliaMiss turned to Yankee husband, said “whoa” and then promptly broke her wrist doing a sort of back-flip…over LSU!–a team she rarely cheers for. She sends her regrets that she cannot cheer properly again and now has to sit in her chair like a lady during games, which adds to the stress. Life no longer has meaning for her when watching football, but she gave me permission to tell Sophie that Mississippi girls must have some type of connection that is inborn for football (basketball also fits this category and do not mention Duke to her until she has recovered).MagnoliaMiss sends her very best to Sophie and all the other ladies who read her blog. She felt this was a public service announcement that watching SEC football can be a dangeous event even if you are not on the field. Thank you.
I’m a UK fan. We’re used to scandal. Speaking of… FREE ENES! :)
I got to experience that AU UGA game in person. You could cut the air there was so much tension. Which I hate because UGA is like sister school to AU. While I have tried to parent my children to make good choices, my 16 yo is considering UGA. I kinda love UGA 364 days of the year because of Pat Dye being a Georgia boy and Vince Dooley being an Auburn boy. I think there has been some wrongdoing on somebody’s part with the Cam thing and I just want to get it over. Have not turned Finebaum on because….well you know its just Finebaum!! I wanted MSU to beat bama because…well you know its just bama. What about Saban smacking the #10 QB during a sideline tirade? Oh my ! I watch football like a rabid fan. Inside..outside…standing on the sofa. Learned from my LSU fan husband. Still lovin being @ #2. Should have flown over those ducks this week !!
My local team? The University of Texas Longhorns. I’d just love to have some TV crazy this season for any reason. You know? Like maybe a WIN some time this season, for example. So, I’ll join your team. Go, Bulldogs. Rah.
OH MY WORD is right!! It’s Marion … your lifelong Houston friend.
I went to a party that a friend of mine from church was helping host tonight and when I got there she said .. “OH, my friend Marion wanted to meet you. She saw where you commented on Boo’s blog”.
She and my friend are running buddies. In face, Rhonda’s facebook page yesterday said .. “me and my friend Marion did 12 miles today” … TWELVE. I mean, I knew Melanie was doing the couch to 5K, but I didn’t know you had friends who run twelve and post about how great it was …EEK.
Anyway … as it turns out my daughter Caroline and her son Will went to middle school together and now are at Stratford High School together. I came home and asked if she knew him and she said .. “yes, he’s in my Spartan group”. Small world!
So fun. Just had to tell ya.
Oh, and this weekend … well, I’ll be calling the Hogs. I grew up in Arkansas. :0
You make me laugh and then laugh some more! At least you all could throw the football to your OWN teammates on Saturday. My rebels really disappointed me and I am not sure if this season can end soon enough. Hope your Thanksgiving is wonderful! Can’t wait to hear about all your fun.
No worries about the length of the post. I got all distracted in the 2nd paragraph when you said you are an INFP. (total MB geek here) Now I know why I’ve always felt such great connection to you. We’re practically TWINS! (I’m an ENFP) NFPs feel that harmony in relationships is paramount. I feel you on the bothersomeness of The Tension. Totally.
I just had to throw that out there.
And I say if you can’t decorate early to celebrate the birth of our LORD AND SAVIOR, then really, what’s the point?
I’m another Myers-Briggs geek who let out a squeal of excitement when you mentioned that you were an INFP. So few people I run across even know about these types and I’m always happy to find someone who does.
Even though INFP is commonly referred to as “The Idealist”, there are actually four different types that exhibit strong idealistic tendencies. The idealist factor doesn’t have so much to do with the P (perceiving) element as it does with the NF (intuitive and feeling) elements. All NF types are idealistic by nature (INFJ, INFP, ENFJ, and ENFP).
I myself am an INFJ and often say that I am “idealist to a fault” because I am a crazy dreamer who can’t be reigned in by too much practicality. So don’t feel bad about your passionate response to your favorite team, because you are not alone. I totally understand where you are coming from. :)
I’m just the same way about my team! I didn’t realize how much I interacted with the TV until I watched a game with a group of people I work with (including my boss) and had to restrain myself. I’m a Longhorn fan though, so I may or may not be boycotting the games on TV this year…
I love an all-call for T’giving recipes! Here are a couple of my current favorites.
Pumpkin Cheesecake
30 gingersnaps
1/2 cup pecans, toasted
1/4 cup brown sugar
4 Tbsp. butter, melted
4 (8-oz.) packages cream cheese, softened
1 1/2 cups sugar
4 eggs
1 1/2 cups pumpkin
1/4 heavy cream
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. allspice
Amaretto Whipped Cream
1. Pulse gingersnaps and pecans in a food processor until ground. Combine crumb mixture with brown sugar and melted butter. Press mixture in bottom and up sides of a lightly greased springform pan.
2. Beat cream cheese and sugar with an electric mixer until fluffy. Add in eggs, 1 at a time, beating until blended after each addition. Beat in pumpkin and next 3 ingredients. Pour mixture into prepared crust.
3. Bake at 350° for 1 hour and 15 minutes. Cool in pan 10 minutes; then run knife around edge of pan and release sides. Cool completely on rack. Chill cheesecake 8 hours or overnight. Top with Amaretto Whipped Cream, if desired.
Amaretto Whipped Cream
2 cups whipping cream
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup Amaretto
1. Beat cream with an electric mixer, gradually adding in sugar and Amaretto. Beat until soft peaks form.
Roasted Brussels Sprouts With Bacon
3 bacon slices, chopped
1 lb. Brussels sprouts, cut into quarters
Salt and pepper
Zest and juice from 1 lemon
1. Sauté bacon in a cast iron skillet until it begins to cook through. Stir in Brussels sprouts, and cook, stirring occasionally, 15 minutes. Stir in salt, pepper, lemon zest, and lemon juice. Cook 5 more minutes.
2. Bake at 400° for 10 minutes.
BooMama, we could so be friends if for no other reason than our love of SEC football (I’m an AU girl) and Myers-Briggs (ISTJ). While I’m not an idealist, I have very similar sentiments as you.
My Myers-Briggs type does showcase a “show me/prove it” streak. And as it relates to the Cam Newton situation, I just want all the facts laid out in one place to make a fair decision and stop all this speculation. Being in PR, I know that’s not the way it works.
Anyway, my husband who graduated from a small, private engineering school in upstate NY that doesn’t have a football team is still amazed at the passion around SEC football. When I broke out the next year’s SEC calendar soon after he proposed to begin to narrow down dates for our fall wedding, he thought I was joking. My birthday is always on/near the AU/UGA game weekend, and living in Georgia, it’s almost as intense a rivalry as Auburn vs. Bama. After 10 years, I think he’s finally learned that my b-day plans will have to accommodate football schedules.
Fortunately, my family does get it. Unfortunately, they’re all Alabama or Georgia fans. This year’s Thanksgiving festivities (in Alabama) will test our family bond. :-)
I stumbled across your blog while doing some online research to help my sister’s sister (long story) prepare for the launch of her first children’s book, but I’m definitely going to have to add you to my RSS feed for the football commentary alone.
Take heart and forego the guilt. Auburn led the original charge to have our cowbells banned, so…a little fuss over their heisman trophy candidate is small potatos.
Your cousin’s baby is turning FOUR??? Get. Out. Of. Town. Son.
Thoroughly enjoying your blogs! I not only scream at the tv, thinking that will help, I will also “not watch” if the game is close and I think we have a chance of winning – as if it makes any difference whether I’m watching or not, got on my lucky sweatshirt or not, etc. etc.
I also get WAY too nervous. Quit going to basketball games many years ago because I spent most of the second half walking around the concourse, peeping in at the scoreboard through the breezeways!
It’s not crazy. It’s sports.
The best recipes I know for Thanksgiving side dishes are in Pioneer Woman’s cookbook. You absolutely cannot go wrong with her mashed potatos, mac n’ cheese, or chocolate sheet cake. I’ve not made anything of Ree’s that my family did not LOVE, LOVE, LOVE!!
Happy Cooking!
Just so you know, this (Keep in mind that we live in Birmingham, and every time I pass a car with Auburn tags I feel like I need to duck a little bit. Or maybe wave. Or maybe roll down my window and scream, “WE DIDN’T MEAN ANY HARM – WE WERE JUST TRYING TO FOLLOW THE RULES!â€) ….totally made me laugh.
And because I’m as crazy of a football fan as you, I have to say, ROLLLLLL TIDE!
Oh, and I totally thought y’all were gonna win the game against the Hogs.
