If Skinnies Aren’t Your Thing

When I look at other people who are wearing skinny jeans, my first thought is usually something along the lines of “Well – you look absolutely darlin’.” I’m especially fond of skinny jeans in bright colors, so I develop a serious case of wardrobe envy when I see someone wearing hot pink skinny jeans and, say, a denim shirt. I want to run to the store and replicate the look ASAP, but there’s only one problem.

I look terrible in skinny jeans.

Seriously.

Like “bless your heart” terrible.

Part of the problem is that I’m apple shaped. Another part of the problem is that I am not a size 6. And the biggest part of the problem is that my calves are enormous. So if I put on a pair of skinny jeans, I basically look like a beach ball with bowling pins for legs.

Oh, yes ma’am. It is a very attractive look.

Now that the weather is cooler and skinny cords are all the rage, I’ve been on the hunt for some boot cut cords in bold colors. About six weeks ago I saw some plum-colored cords on the Old Navy website, and since I figured it couldn’t hurt to give them a try, I ordered them on a whim. They came in a few days later, and much to my surprise, they fit great. They also help me feel a little more hip and with it and now; even though they’re not skinny cords, the color makes them feel current and fun.

This morning I decided to see if there were any other colors still available in that same boot cut style, and I ended up ordering another pair in a deep, bright blue. It dawned on me when I got my confirmation email that I should pass along the link just in case anyone else feels awkward in skinny jeans or skinny cords but still enjoys a trend.

And certainly you don’t have to be apple-shaped in order to wear these cords – the boot cut is friendly to all body types. But if you’ve been wanting to embrace the bolder colors, the Old Navy high-rise flared cords are a great option. Plus, Old Navy has a discount that ends today; if you enter THANKYOU at checkout, you get 30% off. I don’t have a vested interest in you using the discount, and this post isn’t any sort of affiliate deal – but I do like to pass along a bargain.

Last thing: if you decide to treat yourself to these cords, I’d suggest ordering a size smaller than you usually wear. Old Navy jeans / cords are no stranger to the stretch, and it’s always nice to be able to wear pants for a full day without having to constantly pull them up.

So. That is all. Rock on, people.

Rock on in your colorful cords.

I tried on my first pair of skinny jeans Saturday. It was quickly decided that they were not meant for me. They stayed at the store. They didn’t even stand a chance. You are not alone.

  2. They key to getting the skinny jean look, if you are not a size -2, is to buy straight leg jeans that hit at or around the top of your foot. Also, I feel like colored cords are the way to go for the colored leg trend, because I feel like most colored jeans end up looking like the dreaded jegging!
And those plum cords are lovely:)

  3. The link has boomama.net in front of it and takes you to a Gnarly, Dude! message page. ;) I’m going to look at them now. Thanks.

  4. Thanks for passing on this link. I am going to check these out because like you I have enormous calfs. Speaking of which, do you ever find any boots to fit?

  5. Also, the link isn’t working.

  6. Link is fixed!

  7. Thank you thank you! from a size 12 apple. My calves are small but that doesn’t make the skinnies look any better :)

  8. OH, I feel your pain! I love, love, love the look and it hate, hate, HATES me (especailly after baby #4 decided she would be a c-section, thank you very much, and I have the horrible muffin top look…). I’m hoping by the “high rise” in the description that means the zipper is longer than 1 inch?! That’s become one of my tests these days! if the zipper to too short, meaning my bum is going to be hanging out every time I lean over, I dont’ even try them on! Thanks for the link! We live overseas and I’m literally finishing my online shopping TODAY for my mom to bring in a few weeks when she comes!

  9. ahh you had me at “high-rise”. I am one of those women who fit the “are they still called skinny jeans if I put them on my fat legs?” No matter what I do I cannot get rid of my calves. I missed out on the tall boot trend because of said calves. Looks like I will not have to miss out on the colored pants trend. Now if I can just be bold enough to wear them!

  10. Super cute. I might have to check in-store for them as I would need to try them on to make sure they fit. :)

  11. DONE AND DONE! You have made my budget brain harmonize with the part of my brain that still needs to look cute. :)

  12. That’s a great word right there girl! Cute and frugal! Two things I try to achieve… sadly I often fall into the frumpy and frugal or the cute and way too much money.

  13. why oh why do they put those big old buttoned down pockets on the back? so very unflattering on well rounded buttocks! I would have loved a pair of these except for those pockets. I just can’t do them.

  14. Thank you for the cute suggestion! I am going to make a trip to Old Navy this weekend.

    I love your blog!

    xoxo,
    Melissa

  15. Hey! I got some GREAT CORDS at Talbot’s! They’ve got Talbot’s Woman, Talbot’s, and Talbot’s Petite. And they all look amazing–could be worth a try. For the record, I got red. :) I tried to find orange for Tennessee (Go Vols) but no luck yet. :)

  16. Lands End has some really pretty colors that are boot cut. Saw them today at the sears and they are very beautiful!

  17. love these!! Thank you for passing the link along :)

  18. These are exactly what I’ve been looking for! But can you define “high-rise” for me? Do they still sit below the belly button or are we talking full-blow mom jean high? That would be a deal breaker for me.

  19. I am so right there with ya Boo Mama. I look like a tamato on toothpicks with those things on. True story. Thanks for the suggestion!

  20. I so wanted them to come in big girl sizes. They do have the boot leg cords, but the colors they have are yuck(brown), yuckier(light brown) and every bid girl pant comes in this color(black). But, they have the skinny jean in bright colors for big girls. Are these people insane? Thanks for the link I was able to pick up some really cute sweaters with the discount.

  21. I have some that no longer fit :/ But it’s ok…I’m going to try some of these!
That is one thing I don’t often shop for, but it’s time!
    Thanks, Sophie!

  22. Thank you for the link to the present!! I too, am a fan of the color but my 14 yo daughter is the one who can rock the skinny jean – not me! I’m heading to the link now. You are darlin’!

  23. Cheryl Stanley says:

Happy Birthday to you… Hope you have somewhere to wear those new cords today. May this new year be the best one yet.

  24. Can I tell you how excited I am about this post? About seven-ish years ago, Old Navy had these plum cords. I owned a glorious pair. Should’ve kept them. YES, I’ll be getting another pair to rock on!

  25. I happen to be obsessed with the colored skinny jean and the colored skinny cord. HOWEVER, I must say, these boot cut ones are DARLING! I must own a pair. Like today. I love how they have those 2 cute little pockets in the front and they look like they would be all sorts of flattering. And you suggest buying DOWN a size? Please, even if they were ugly, I would probably buy these jeans. I LIVE for buying down a size! :)
Also, Melanie linked to me on her blog a couple of weeks ago, but I would LOVE for you to check out my new little blog too. I think you might get a kick out of it! (In my head I see you sitting at your computer, munching on a cracker and dipping it into something cream cheese related while casually clicking through some of my posts.) :)

Let me know if you check it out!

  26. Gotta say as a “curvy” girl (nevermind that my autocorrect turned C-U-R-V-Y into scurvy…) I was completely opposed to skinny jeans- especially the jeggings. However, I discovered the solution- tunic tops! Now, definitely NOT Mrs. Riper style shirts but a nicely cut tunic and a pair of ballet flats. Lane Bryant has some great ones. Gotta love their coupons too! Happy Birthday, Sophie!

  27. Obviously, the model is not from the South. In Mississippi, we would never, ever wear cords with sandals and our toes peeking out. Even if they were really cute sandals and really well pedicured toes.
